Will Kurtz Slam the L.A. Times Web Site for the Commenters Who Reveled in Tony Snow’s Death?

Tomorrow there will be an online chat with Howard Kurtz at the Washington Post web site. You can leave questions or comments for him here. Here is the question I just left:
Mr. Kurtz:
When Ted Kennedy was diagnosed with a brain tumor, you made a special point of noting in your column that there were commenters at Michelle Malkin’s site “who were reveling in the news and, in one case, talked of celebrating.”
Over the weekend, Tony Snow died. At the L.A. Times web site — where comments must be approved before they appear — well over 2 dozen commenters reveled in the news. Some examples:
“CANCER WAS TOO GOOD FOR HIM. HOPE IT WAS PAINFUL. NOW FOR THE REST OF THIS SCUMMY ADMINISTRATION. COME ON CANCER, DO YOUR GOOD WORK………………..”
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the first day of a Tony Snow-free world! Yay!!!!”
“I only wish his suffering were more prolonged.”
“I hope he suffered at the end. Just a terrible person.”
My question to you, Mr. Kurtz: is this worthy of mention in your column? Is it meaningful that one of the nation’s largest newspapers approved these comments for publication? Or are such comments relevant only when they appear on a conservative blogger’s site?
What are the odds that they will ask Mr. Kurtz to respond?

It’s probably Wash Post and LA Times employees who are making the comments. I’d say no to the question about Kurtz.
Hate only comes from the right, you see. Even when the DBM have to make it up.

Kurtz tries to be fair. Doesn’t always succeed; but it seems to me that he tries to make a good faith effort.
I’ll bet he responds.

If you judge people by the enemies they make, in this case enemies who are the worst of the worst, then Tony Snow qualifies for sainthood I’d say.

Granted…the left-wing sites are far more vitriolic when it comes to comments like that, but in all fairness, I zipped around to Kos and DU and HuffPo yesterday, and most of the comments were thoughtful and respectful. Not all…but most.
Same goes here or at MM’s site, there’s always going to be bad apples in the bunch.
But…like you said Patterico (nice to see ya btw) the LA Times approves all comments before they’re posted. So they have no excuse.
JetBoy on July 13, 2008 at 4:32 PM
He’ll try to show that a few comments on the right are just the same as thousands of comments on the left and snarky AP articles.
MamaAJ on July 13, 2008 at 4:32 PM
Zero chance.
I think it is total bad taste to cheer the sickness or death of anyone irregardless of their political party. I also would say I have seen more of this from the left than from the right.
Of course, more conservatives are religious than are liberals. None of those comments should have been approved!

I’ll cut the LATimes a little slack on this. They give the commentator an opportunity to make a fool of himself.
Nice thing about free speech; you can say anything you want, and you’ll be judged on what you say and how well you said it.
That’s why I’ve never bought the idea that a blog was tainted by the comments that appear on the site. Especially when it is trivial for an enemy of the blog to post something clearly intended to discredit the site.
rockhauler on July 13, 2008 at 4:48 PM
Well…we’ll see. It would seem to me that such as this would turn the stomach of even the most rabid lefty, much as the sane among us (the majority) respond to the infrequent similar comments on righty blogs. But this sort of thing has gone on unchallenged for so long, and since the PTBs that make the call about what gets published and what doesn’t agree with the hateful sentiments at the most fundamental level, well…we’ll see.
I’m sure Patterico will keep us up to date.
Bob's Kid on July 13, 2008 at 4:51 PM
Since when is Patterico blogging here? To answer generally, the media prefers to highlight failings on the right. Why? Simple. “Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue” — Francois de La Rochefoucauld. The right extols justice, truth, righteousness. When it fails, we know it’s wrong. It’s conspicuous in its contrast to what it stands for. Or as Bill Bennett has said, it’s better to be a hypocrite than to have no values. Everyone recognizes there’s a value in having values. Even when we don’t live up to those values. And the picture is eye-catching for sure.
Paul-Cincy on July 13, 2008 at 4:52 PM
Official Vegas odds are; 14,000,000,000,000 to one that a liberal would shed light upon another liberal’s atrocity. The odds are actually improved by up to 10% if you add the ‘gun to his head’ scenerio written by a conservative commentor on an independent right-leaning blog.
Griz on July 13, 2008 at 4:53 PM
Granted. The point is, people in the mainstream media should give blogs with open comments the same consideration.
Jim Treacher on July 13, 2008 at 4:53 PM
After reading the vileness of the trash these halfwitted morons wrote, and then seeing the LA Times post these comments with obvious gleeful abandon, I could give a flying flaming rat’s rear end what Howard Kurtz has to say. Any comments Howard Kurtz has to make about anything is not worth the dynamite to blow them into next Tuesday. And as for the LA Times, I wouldn’t use their newspaper to train a Great Dane puppy on. As far as I am concerned, the LA Times is THE prime example of the death and burial of ethical journalism in this country!
pilamaye on July 13, 2008 at 4:58 PM
Yes, that’s the point.
An individual blogger shouldn’t be held to a higher standard than a major (no snickering there) newspaper.
Stop that snickering now.

Seriously, what kind of people write things like “I only wish his suffering were more prolonged.” or “I hope he suffered at the end. Just a terrible person.” Even Susan Estrich, whom I cannot stand, wrote a wonderful moving tribute to Tony Snow. I have to say, it is indeed a fact that in times like these, some just cannot take the higher path.

This post is misleading. You insinuate that Kurtz “slammed” Malkin’s site, which he did not do. What you left out from his comments:
A digression: Michelle Malkin is among those conservatives asking readers to put aside political differences and pray for Kennedy and his family, and most of her commenters did just that…
He very specifically only slammed the commenters reveling in Kennedy’s misfortune — and portrayed Malkin’s and most of the site’s commenters as handling the news with class.

In it’s own way, it is reassuring to know that cancer is an equal opportunity killer. The people that purport to dance on the grave of a victim of this hidious disease are the first to say we need universal health coverage and we should all help pay for it. We can only hope those twisted individuals that laugh and scoff at pain and suffering, when compassion is called for instead, are the young and inexperienced. Somehow though, I doubt it.

I was going to comment on this in the Bush admin. bride thread, but let it pass. Many in there while rightfully condemning this guy (and anyone else found to know about this scheme), made the observation that something like this is not a partisan thing. Left and right both do it and it’s wrong when they both do it.
Fine. But I was going to point out that the generousness of not defining the “right” by a fews actions is rarely give to the left when some on their side act inappropriately. Then I saw the above comment. So saying it now.

The vile comments at CNN, the LA Times and other liberal bastions of brotherly love are a great look into the heart of liberals and their troops.
Tony Snow was a class act, his service to this country, his concern for others, his joy of life can’t be diminished by the hate of others. I thought that the shows that Fox News put on Saturday were very good. Juan Williams tribute to Tony Snow was really great, while they may not have agreed politically, Juan Williams speaks of a friend and a great human being.
Skeptic on July 13, 2008 at 5:33 PM
I could never wish a horrible disease like cancer on anybody. The worst I could wish on any of the people I ‘hate’ on the left is that they shut up and go away (and possibly seek professional help).
Kurtz will do nothing at all – hateful vitriols only truly bad when a Republican says it.
rockbend on July 13, 2008 at 5:34 PM
It makes me sad to follow the links to CNN and the LA Times — I’m sure there are more out there but I don’t want to go looking for them. I can’t imagine even coming up with some of the hatred these people are spewing, nonetheless publish it all for the world to see. To think that there are people out there that are carrying this much passionate hate and vile contempt for ANYBODY — nonetheless a guy that was as respected as Tony Snow — is frightening.
I have seen examples of Bush Derangement Syndrome before, but this seems to me the worst part of it — reserving the blackest part of what we are as humans to thrust at anybody who had anything to do with the Bush Administration, regardless of their role. This just isn’t right. It’s barely human.

Mr. Shipley,
I said that Kurtz found it worthy of mention, and asked if he would slam the LAT web site.
To the extent you read that as an insinuation that he slammed Michelle, I think you’re right — and I think he did.
Let me ask you: what was the relevance of a Big Media reporter/columnist taking care to note those comments, if not to slam Michelle?
Sure, he did it in a gentle, backhanded way. But mentioning it at all was a slam. You bet it was. It was a little touch of pandering to his lefty readers who hate her. Why else mention it???

Patterico,
You can play the subtext game all you want, but he portrayed Malkin and most of her commenters as handling the news with class. He didn’t slam her site, just certain commenters.
Why did he include it? I don’t know, I imagine because the comments angered him. But his flattering profile of Malkin and her site from 2007 (which calls to light liberals attacks and threats against her) shows no trace of a vendetta against her site.

He is, after all, a media critic and the ugly comments at a newspaper site merits at least, if not more, attention than those made at a private blog.
Which puts us back to the question Patterico initially posed (sorry, Alphie).
SteveMG on July 13, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Why did he include it? I don’t know, I imagine because the comments angered him.
But is this the only example of anonymous comments on a blog site that ever angered him? Come on. He is a columnist for the Washington Post and he made a point of reporting on a handful of anonymous hateful comments on her site, and her site alone. No mention of the bilge they spew at HuffPo, the filth at his own site — and on and on and on.
I don’t know if you run a web site, Tom, but if a powerful Big Media reporter culls through your comments and insists on telling the world about the hateful ones, that is an attack, my friend. It is. And he can be as backhanded about it as he likes, but it doesn’t change the facts.
Why her and not anyone else, Tom? Why? Answer me THAT if you’re going to continue to maintain that I somehow made a false insinuation.

Sometimes I think blog owners spend more time worrying about what other blogs are doing and saying than anything else.
When site has a server/setup where you have to register and can’t change your handle on the fly one who wants to continue commenting will exercise restraint.
Not so for the other sites which don’t have the same controls – get banned, change your name and use a proxy — you’ll be back. There are rude people in the world and my guess is that at least some of the people making those comments do so for shock value and little else.

For Liberals…, dancing on the graves of those who disagree with them is par for the course. It’s only ‘news’ on the rare occasion that a Conservative does what THEY do constantly. Liberal double standards, hypocrisy, and hate-filled rhetoric… Nothing ‘new’ there, so it’s not ‘news’. They’ll always get away with things for which a Conservative can expect no less than to be drummed out of the average Conservative organization, BY CONSERVATIVES… At least we know we’re right. A true Conservative would rather be right than popular. Tony Snow was both and I, for one, relish the fact that the people making those comments are leaving a paper trail that will affect THEIR upcoming judgment day. Evil is as evil does.
I was praying that Tony would recover or, at least, be with us for years to come. Heston, Russert, Snow… It’s been a bad year for our guys. I can just imagine the conversations in Liberal circles… A bunch of Atheists talking about God’s wrath befalling ‘right-wing extremists etc…

Patterico,
No matter how you slice it, Kurtz does not slam Malkin or her site. To “slam” is to severely criticize. He does not make and criticism of Michelle or her site, and makes it clear those he does criticize are acting against her wishes.
One can even argue that bringing attention to her classy reaction and call for prayers, helped bring attention to her non “controversial” side.
Malkin’s site attacks the Post regularly — Kurtz specifically. It dishes, but obviously can’t take it if Kurtz’ aside is taken as a “slam.”
And that hotair link you posted is a great example of the mental gymnastics used to try and make an fair piece seemed biased.

CalFed, you are absolutely correct.
When a person lacks any charity whatsoever for a grieving family upon the departure of a loved one to the grave, those without charity will find none from any quadrant upon their own departure.
When ubertard Marxists do their thing in America, there are various responses:
1. ignore them and hope they disperse soon (PC cowardice)
2. call authorities if threatened (demanding)
3. face them down politely (at your own risk)
4. face them down with force (unwise)
5. make note and file for future use (in conjunction with any of the above).
Personally, I go for 3 & 5–but if they threaten violence, start with 2. To actually attempt dialogue with ubertard Marxists is to cast pearls before swine. It is not only wasteful and foolish, it is perilous to your physical well being since they devalue your very existence. In their minds, the world would be better off with you dead, certainly better off with your eyes, throat and hands cut. They would actually enjoy harming you. Hence, make clear where you have drawn the line separating what they stand for and where you stand, make note of all details for future use, and prepare to battle for your survival in your own world because in their minds, there is no room for you or your world, only them and theirs.

I hate to say it, but people on both this site and on those places like Koss and Huffpost say some pretty vile things. Bad behavior does not justify bad behavior and this was the type of language and inability to have a civil discourse that Tony Snow was so against. Almost all the people on Fox the last day said the same thing…that Tony Snow never went down this road of being vile and assassinating people’s character. People on this site even went after their own during the GOP Primary….look at some of the things said against the candidates who were not Romney. Tony Snow was a good man, and though I do not like Ted Kennedy one bit, I do not like the lack of civility people have shown.
Some people need to grow up.

Just pull out his daddy’s closet skeletons and put all of the facts on the table and see who wins the poker game this time.
Really, though, let dead dogs lie.

The commenter who earlier mentioned the Susan Estrich article has a good point. Estrich, Snow, Williams, Russert, etc are all professional journalists and politicos. The fact that they maintained friendships despite their political beliefs is one thing that the blogosphere should pay attention to if it ever wants to be a credible, mainstream source of news and information.
Arizonateacher makes good points at 7:10 pm.
Bradky on July 13, 2008 at 7:15 PM
I know your intentions are good, Patterico, but you’re just giving them what they want.
Metro on July 13, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Tom Shipley,
You have offered no explanation why Kurtz singled out Malkin’s commenters for mention.
That is clear evidence of his motivation. Your failure to even try to provide an answer, despite my repeated entreaties, is telling.
Patterico on July 13, 2008 at 7:20 PM
Based on your comments in another thread it is becoming increasingly obvious you were edgeubacated in a government school. You are, if nothing else (and there is truly nothing else), quite entertaining.

I don’t think we should use Tony Snow’s death to try to make a point. Every single day there are endless opportunities to point out the souless character of the left, pick one of those and hammer it. Despite what arizonateacher says above, during the recent death of Tim Russert and even the illness of kennedy, nothing coming even close to the vile that is commonplace on the left was said here on HA or on any other conservative blog. I say honor Tony Snow publicly with the same kind of dignity he displayed in life.
Now if Ed wants to start another thread asking for suggestions about how to talk to leftists when a guest on panel shows, I’ve got plenty to say.

Slim and none.

When kennedy’s illness was announced, and then kurtz wrote that column, I went back through the thread on it and although it was obvious he isn’t liked, there was nothing as foul as what they do daily at huffington and kos.
That’s the lefts little corner of hell, leave them to it.
peacenprosperity on July 13, 2008 at 7:26 PM
I say he spins it if he addresses the L.A. piece at all.
Libs rarely eat crow. But they sure make a mean plate of snake.
Texyank on July 13, 2008 at 7:27 PM
I agree to a certain point, but after eight years of George Bush acting like some Joe Palooka punching bag, standing there and taking the vicious attacks from the left and not responding at all, I am a little worn out. I have come to a point where I don’t care if I appear civil or not. Lay Ted Kennedy’s life down beside Tony Snow’s and think about it.
JonRoss on July 13, 2008 at 7:28 PM
Why are you worn out? They didn’t attack you did they? This is why discourse is so bad these days. People want to take offense for things said about others – it never stops. 8 years of CDS followed by eight years of BDS….
Now that is a reason to be tired!
Bradky on July 13, 2008 at 7:34 PM
Patterico,
You want me to get inside the man’s head?
You’re insinuating that he slammed Malkin’s site with no evidence aside from what you believe his motivation to be is what is telling.
Tom_Shipley on July 13, 2008 at 7:42 PM
…he’s as persistent, insignificant and irritating as a hemorrhoid.
Entelechy on July 13, 2008 at 7:43 PM
Tom_Shipley, or Mr. Shipley, as Patterico politely insists on addressing you – prove a positive, or a negative, or drop it. You’ll be just as perfect.
Entelechy on July 13, 2008 at 7:44 PM
Wow! That’s a great literary reference! Are you really Dennis Miller?

I’m holding my breath.
That sound you hear is the sound of me turning blue…
drjohn on July 13, 2008 at 7:46 PM
Douglass K. Daniel, with Jennifer Loven, eulogized Tony Snow thusly:
After Ted Kennedy passes on do you think they’ll they write something like this?:
Inquiring minds want to know, Mr. Kurtz.
Tinian on July 13, 2008 at 7:46 PM
Hell yes they attacked me. My son is in his 5th year in the USMC. The Democrats, including Ted Kennedy and other sorry SOBs have done whatever they can do to make the world a much dangerous place for him. From Pelosi violating the Logan Act by consorting with Syria to Obama promising to hobknob with Iran. All the while constantly doing whatever they can to do undermine national security and damage our economy. What about Lady Clinton and her vicious attack on Petreus ? Why did Bush not defend his top General ? Wanna talk about Code Pink that pops up inside Congressional hearings ? Have any idea who let them in ? But on second thought I am vastly more pissed than worn out.
JonRoss on July 13, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Fify. You’re welcome.
Entelechy on July 13, 2008 at 7:51 PM
JonRoss, you just made an eloquent justification for Bradky’s “enough of the Clintons/Bushe”. I say the same. Both camps pack up and leave us alone, for a looooong time.
We’s way tared, as Hillary would say.
Please tell your son that we owe him and his peers a lot! They grant us to be stupid and pontificate freely. They also keep us free. May it always be so. They are our betters.
