Radio and television host Tony Snow, who breathed new life into the role of White House press secretary, died at 53 from complications of cancer:
Tony Snow, the former White House press secretary and conservative pundit who bedeviled the press corps and charmed millions as a FOX News television and radio host, has died after a long bout with cancer. He was 53.
A syndicated columnist, editor, TV anchor, radio show host and musician, Snow worked in nearly every medium in a career that spanned more than 30 years.
“The White House has lost a great friend and a great colleague,” said President Bush’s press secretary Dana Perino. “We all loved watching him at the podium, but most of all we learned how to love our families and treat each other.”
Snow joined FOX in 1996 as the original anchor of “FOX News Sunday” and hosted “Weekend Live” and a radio program, “The Tony Snow Show,” before departing in 2006. A sometime fill-in host for Rush Limbaugh, Snow said he loved the intimacy of his radio audience.
This weekend will bring many personal tributes, but allow me just a minor example. At the 2004 Republican convention, when I had been blogging for less than a year, I was introduced to Tony almost accidentally. I was shocked when he knew my blog, and maybe even more shocked at how he treated me — as a colleague, an equal in an arena where most of us bloggers felt like Cindarella among ten thousand stepsisters.
He wanted to interview me for his radio show, but he couldn’t work me in. Instead, we chatted off the air for a while, and he impressed me as a man who absolutely loved his work. His joy and his good humor shined through every word, as it did when he worked at the White House, and appeared on television and radio. Viewers and listeners got the authentic Tony Snow; he didn’t build a false persona for public consumption.
When Tony told the world about his illness and took a leave of absence, I sent him an e-mail wishing him well. I was only a little surprised to get a note back from him on his return, thanking me and complimenting me on my work. By that time, I knew what kind of man Tony Snow was, and I hoped his return would mean many years of us enjoying his work as much as he did. Alas, it was not in the cards.
My condolences and prayers go out to Tony’s family and friends. We lost a good man and a class act. Godspeed, Tony.

Prayers and condolences to the Snow family. He was one of the best, and always genuine.

Tony’s first stop in Heaven will be to see Buckley playing away at the harpsichord. Our loss–and it’s a huge loss–is Heaven’s gain. I’ll be praying for his family.
We’ll all miss you Tony.

I was in tears over this news this morning. I first heard/read Tony when he was writing for the Detroit News and USA Today and occasionally subbing for Rush. A 100% talented and decent man who loved life, God and others. A very great loss.

Though they came from different political backgrounds, Tony Snow was cut from the same cloth as another recently lost great: Tim Russert.
Both men were at the top of their game professionally, full of energy, wit, humor, decency and a sense of fair play. Another terrible loss with Snow’s death, way too soon, for all of us.

Terribly sad day. Even with his body devastated by cancer he would still go on Mahers show and eviscerate douches like Matt Tabia, Cuban and Maher.

There are certain people who exude confidence and peace as death approaches, and I always find it a mysterious thing. Tony inspired me greatly during these last couple of years with his bouyant spirit.
Tony and his family are in my prayers this weekend.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

I was “introduced” to Tony through his newspaper columns many years ago. I immediately became a fan of his. Then one day he filled in for Rush. I then became a Fan For Life. As a former professional radio guy, I always admired the way Tony did his job, whether on radio or TV. He was a pro. In the end, I guess the best final compliment you can pay a guy is “he was a good man”. Tony Snow was a good man. Vaya con Dios, amigo.

Although his passing reflects a deep loss, the living example he set redirects me to reflect on the positive nature he was so talented to impress on us. He frequently spoke about how fortunate a man he was. He seemed a genuinely nice guy. We are lucky to have known him, such as it was as a public figure. RIP.
heroyalwhyness on July 12, 2008 at 9:25 AM
I wish I could show some class equal to Tony’s, but I couldn’t help myself this morning. I have already sent Associated Press a brief but ugly message about their cheap, false and petty shot this morning in their initial story. It will not do any good but it made me feel a little better.
We are all the better for having had Tony Snow amongst us.

God bless him, and his family…I was just over on the HuffingtonPost, where of course the comments section was closed. I let them know it spoke volumes about leftist derangement in the post with the McCain=Bush sign. I asked how long a Obama=Carter sign would last in a public forum, and I’m sure I was censored over at PRAVDA.
Once again, deepest condolences to the Snow family. I will miss seeing Tony. He was the best…….

I saw Tony Snow in person a year or so ago. He was with W visiting our little village here in Tennessee. He was walking up the street by himself, doing his job. There didn’t seem to be an entourage with him which amazed me. Several people recognized him and were able to step up to him an speak. He would stop, shake hands, and then hustle on. A perfect gentlemen. I wish I could have gotten to him before he hustled on up the street.

I can’t imagine why they would have to close the postings on any site when it comes to Tony Snow, there can be nothing bad to say about him. It just isn’t possible. I am even surprised at how much this has hit me, so incredibly sad. Poor Mrs. Bush (41) started crying on the phone and that got me started again. I hope he was able to accomplish his goal of securing his family and that they are encouraged by all the loving things that folks are saying in their rememberance of such a lovely man.

At Russert’s passing, Beto Ochoa noted the folklore, these things come in threes. Would that it had not been Tony! But sometimes pain is so complete; letting go is inevitable for us all. Russert had no leeway. Tony had his time making closure. Both “sides” have lost their finest example in the media. Just as we were enriched by their work, we are the poorer in their absence.
Those rising in the media ranks should note America’s deepest regard for these voices, and emmulate their virtues. Tony Snow was impeccable, and will be a rare act to follow. Immitation is the most sincere form of flattery; but the real thing always stands out. (That’s why Obama casts such a long sinister shadow from the lime light meant to illuminate his facade and hide his corruption. How “journalists” cover Obamarx will be their “tell” in the media ranks’ game for stature.)
maverick muse on July 12, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Crap. :( I was hoping it wasn’t so advanced. It’s a customary thing to call anyone who passes away the best person, beacon for others etc. Kind of devalues truly exceptional people.
I can only say that I really liked Tony Snow a lot. My impression has been that he’s a very decent person.
freevillage on July 12, 2008 at 10:04 AM
What a lovely article. I know it’s categorized as an obit and thus might be written with some color, but the partisan nature is really off-putting. First comes the aside, “With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster’s good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook – if not always a command of the facts – he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses.” Later, as if to prove their disinterested nature, the authors ascribe that same sentiment to others, “Critics suggested that Snow was turning the traditionally informational daily briefing into a personality-driven media event short on facts and long on confrontation.” So who believes Tony was a liar? Is it the authors of this piece or is it their best friends in the press corps?
Whether this is intended to be schizophrenic or just plain duplicitous, it stinks.
RIP Tony.

My last debate with Tony was over the Dubai Ports deal. He was a Freeper and he came in to Free Republic to drum up support for it. There really wasn’t any, but he was doing his job for the President. He was an amazing guy to listen to at a press conference. That grin of his charmed everyone into submission (or at least grudging respect). Tony, you will be missed.

He showed this stressed out 20 year old how to let go and enjoy life. I wish that he never had cancer, but I am grateful to have witnessed such a fighter over the last year or so, who had such a good outlook in the face of cancers scourge. I learned a lot from him.
I hope tony snow has found rest, release, and golden shores. Enjoy, snow.

I am not Catholic, but this reminds me of John Paul II and his physical struggles. Most people were sad and affected in some way but JP II wore his suffering like a badge to show others that even a struggle like his can be a great source of learning and strength. Tony Snow was the same. He suffered but went about the business of life until it was over.
Fruit isn’t always some grand accomplishment. It can be the quite example of a humble man simply displaying his strengths in a unobstrusive fashion.
