Is this the same as the World Wildlife Federation vs World Wrestling Federation conflict? If so, then i guess the question is if the island of Lesbos has been around longer than lesbians. That is as far as I will go.

… ancient Greece represented the height of European civilization.

Maybe for the Greek city states, but the rest of Europe was not like Athens and Thebes.

And the height of European civilization? Every summer the hoplite farmers would put away their plows, pick up their swords, attack the next city and hack each other to death. And this was the “height of European civilization? No sir, it wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of ancient Greek history, but it was a dark time. Yes, they had Plato and Socrates, etc, but do ya know what happened to those guys? And if you could ask a Helot if this was the “height of European civilization” he’d probably say yes because he thinks you’re gonna kill him if he says no.

Tony737 on July 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM

The next time a girl turns you down by saying she’s a lesbian, say that you have no problem with Greek women. Then explain this story to her. It should be good for a laugh, if nothing else.

Never try to impress a Lesbian, because if you do she’ll expect you to keep up the standard for the rest of your life.

It was a Lesbian who drove me to drink, and I never had the courtesy to thank her for it.

Kini on July 12, 2008 at 12:04 AM

The way things have been going on the Continent of late, that poor Lesbian man will be lucky if he isn’t hauled into court for hate speech or limiting gay rights or some other pc drivel.

hillbillyjim on July 12, 2008 at 12:11 AM

Ouch! This guy is late to the party and is highly disingenuous. Lesbian, as a terms name stems from Sappho’s poetry and her connection to Lesbos.

I think Jerry Springer struck it right when his audience chanted, “We love Lesbians”.

You’re confusing all Greece with Sparta which was merely one city-state in Greece … – Beef

No, it wasn’t only Sparta, many (if not most) of the city-states went on campaign every summer. Attacking each other, destroying their livestock and their crops, enslaving the women and children and selling them (to whom, I never was able to figure out, none of the books I’ve read ever say). The alliances would shift back and forth but they were always fighting one another, which is one of the reasons that it’s such a big deal that they united (especially Athens and Sparta) to fight the Persians.

But the worst war of all came after they sent the Persians home, the Pelopennesian War which included most of the cities allied with either Athens or Sparta, temorarily ended Athenian democracy and wiped out a large percentage of the entire Greek population. This lead to the rise of Phillip and Alexander and you know the rest from there.

Tony737 on July 12, 2008 at 2:43 AM

You are a fan of Victor Davis Hanson, perhaps?

His book “A War Like No Other” is very informative, but kinda slow and dry, and not even in chronological order. Good for reference though.

I highly recommend “Persian Fire” by Tim Holland. It covers Persia, Sparta, Athens and the battles of Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Platea. Very informative AND entertaining. I give it 5 out of 5 … um … peanuts!

Tony737 on July 12, 2008 at 2:54 AM

I wish the man and his island folk luck. I’m all for the correct use of language – “taking back” the words/terms/phrases manipulated by the Left for its corruptive purposes. I wish everyone a mighty gay weekend!

I find it rather amusing that Ed was so critical of the “Watchman”…

“I haven’t had an opportunity to look at this thread until after the show was over today, but we have a troll outbreak that has now been resolved. I’m happy to get this thread back to the tax and electoral topics, and away from the racial epithets and genitalia references spouted by an ex-member of the Hot Air community.

Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes. A cowboy goes to the big city for the first time. He’s sitting in the bar that night trying to get something going with the burly but handsome gal sitting next to him. She smiles and says, “You’re sweet honey but you’re wasting your time. See, I’m a lesbian.” “Wha-what’s a lesbian?” says the cowboy. “Well, see that gorgeous blonde chick down at the end of the bar?” “Yuh-huh, I’ve been a-watchin’ her.” “Well, as a lesbian, I’d like to take her home and lick her over her whole naked body.” “Well, hot-dang,” exclaims the cowboy, “I reckon I’m a lesbian, too!”

smellthecoffee on July 13, 2008 at 1:31 AM

Gay men don’t get their own gender-specific name (that isn’t massively offensive, that is). Why should women have one? It seems unnecessary. “Homosexual” or “gay” work for men or women. We have gender-specific pronouns. “She is gay” or “She is a homosexual” work just fine. “She is a lesbian” is redundant, because we already know she’s a she.
