McCain ad: “God’s Children”

Team McCain has its latest ad out today, taken from a New Hampshire debate in June 2007, when John McCain soliloquized on the contributions of Hispanic citizens and residents to our efforts in Vietnam and Iraq.  Titled “God’s Children”, the ad matches imagery to McCain’s impromptu salute:

My friends, I want you the next time you’re down in Washington, D.C., to go to the Vietnam War Memorial and look at the names engraved in black granite. You’ll find a whole lot of Hispanic names.

When you go to Iraq or Afghanistan today, you’re going to see a whole lot of people who are of Hispanic background. You’re even going to meet some of the few thousand that are still green card holders who are not even citizens of this country, who love this country so much that they’re willing to risk their lives in its service in order to accelerate their path to citizenship and enjoy the bountiful, blessed nation.

So let’s from time to time remember that these are God’s children. They must come into country legally, but they have enriched our culture and our nation as every generation of immigrants before them.

Thank you.

About the best that can be said for this clip is that it was much more effective in context than it is here. During the debate, the other candidates had described illegal immigrants as not much more than a plague upon the land. This response came spontaneously from McCain, defending the contributions of Hispanics in the US as a reminder to Republicans to keep the rhetoric from getting overheated.

Now, though, this ad sounds like a non-sequitur. He and Barack Obama are close in policy on immigration, to the point where conservatives have resigned themselves not to bring it up if McCain won’t. Unfortunately, this sounds now like a deliberate provocation to the Right, who in fairness have never — never — discounted the contributions of Hispanic citizens and legal residents, especially not their long history of service to this nation. The issue is illegal immigration and border security, not whether we know that Americans of Hispanic descent have risked and given their lives for us.

This is a monumentally stupid ad. It spends a full minute saying nothing about the issue it supposedly addresses, and it insults the intelligence of the people whom McCain is trying to woo. And I’m someone who has a little more sympathy for McCain’s efforts on immigration than most on the Right. Take two big steps backward, Senator McCain.

Everytime I consider warming up to him, I’m slapped in the face.

The contribution I could consider making was just spent paying the hospital bills of the illegals he refuses to deport by attrition.

Wow. On the heels of Gramm this is radioactive.

500 comments for sure.

It’s pretty clear that McCain is running as an independent. He apparently views the Republican coalition, and incumbent Republicans, as unimportant.

McCain has clearly demonstrated that, if elected, he also plans to govern as an independent.

pilsener on July 11, 2008 at 9:22 AM

The illegal lobby (McCain included) don’t get it. Like you said, Ed, the issue isn’t immigrants (Hispanic or otherwise) who came here legally. I’m just as p*ssed at and ready to deport Irish or Italians who are here illegally.

I work for a software company, and I work with a lot of immigrants. I know what contributions they make to our society, and it really p*sses me off to hear that someone brilliant is about to get deported because their visa has run out while they were doing things the right way, and meanwhile these scum who snuck across the border are sucking our system dry.

Get a friggin’ clue McCain!!

I think McCain just figured out how to get votes – shameless pandering and non-sequiturs. I’m of the opinion that most voters are very stupid and can get easily distracted by comments such as the above. Only a small number is actually analytical about what candidates are -really- saying. Why do you think Obama is the nominee? Because he shoots rainbows out of his a$$ and whispers sweet non-sequiturs to the masses.

Oh, I don’t know. If you’re trying to draw centrist voters away from Obama, this might be effective in showing that you’re not an extreme right-winger. As for immigration hawks, this is not new information (Juan McAmnesty, anyone?) and I don’t think this changes their opinion one way or the other.

McCains second “bus toss” in two days. First Gramm, now the entire conservative Republican base.

Obambi’s “must speak Spanish” remarks. Now this from McCain.

Must be La Raza week on the campaign trail…

The winning issue will be ENERGY INDEPENDENCE, which touches all of “God’s children”, Senator, not micro-pandering for a niche voter bloc while alienating another.

Hit the problem hurting us all.

Damagingly high energy costs.

This issue seems to have migrated from “illegal” immigrants, to ALL immigrants.

franksalterego on July 11, 2008 at 9:32 AM

Just another in a string of McCain classic hits:

Track 4 – “Opposition to ILLEGAL immigration is inherently racist.”

This is how McCain earns contempt from middle America, by taken an issue of rule of law, an objective issue, and redefining it as prejudice, an subjective issue. What issue is he honest on?

And I’m someone who has a little more sympathy for McCain’s efforts on immigration than most on the Right.

Sympathy?

I believe this ad is targeted at independents who he wants to vote for him, not Obama. Republicans have the reputation – by the left – of being intolerant racists. Of course this isn’t true. At least, no more so than the general population, or racist people on the left. Still, to my perspective, this seems to be an ad that says that McCain is different than other republicans.

Of course, we know this already – so thats why you might think that this a ‘deliberate provocation to the Right’. But I believe this ad is targeted to the center, or even the left, for whoever on the left is stupid enough to vote for a republican.

Unfortunately many illegals do vote. They have stolen a social security number to work. Who says they won’t vote. Them, plus the illegal immigrant supporters on the left who by default vote democrat who would never vote republican in their lifetime. McCain is looking for their vote, when in my opinion 99.9 percent of them are going to be voting for Obama anyway.

wise_man on July 11, 2008 at 9:37 AM

Oh, I don’t know. If you’re trying to draw centrist voters away from Obama, this might be effective in showing that you’re not an extreme right-winger.

Except the vast majority (upwards of 60%) of voters want border security, and an end to illegal scumbags sucking our system dry. This (and energy independance) is a winning issue if he got on the right (in both senses of the word) side of it.

And what happens to those “jobs that Americans won’t do” for a buck twenty-five an hour when the illegals are magically granted amnesty and get union membership?

crazy_legs on July 11, 2008 at 9:38 AM

I hope everyone here votes this video down to one star.

Someone needs to ask McCain ( and Obama ) what they would do if the continent of Africa decided en masse to build millions of boats and sail over here. After all, there are many names of African Americans carved in black granite so shouldn’t we be open to the idea of letting the billion poorest of the world’s citizens sail to our shores where they can have better lives? Or is it just a Latin American fetish?

Buddahpundit on July 11, 2008 at 9:41 AM

it insults the intelligence of the people whom McCain is trying to woo.

BS. He’s not trying to woo us even in the slightest.

With Obama coming more towards the center on issues like Iraq, I really have no reason to vote for McCain whatsoever.

Esthier on July 11, 2008 at 9:41 AM

“…Americans of Hispanic descent have risked and given their lives for us.”

For us or The US?

The way that reads, Americans of Hispanic decent are still outsiders?

Swinehound on July 11, 2008 at 9:41 AM

If I want a tribute to Hispanics, I can get one during Hispanic Heritage Month. Or I can have a sit down with the In-laws. What I want from McCain is a blow-by-blow plan of how he proposes to deal with Illegal Immigration, which includes all ethnic and national groups. People, stop limiting Illegal Immigration to an Hispanic problem. Yes, I know the majority of Illegals are from Mexico and the border fence is joke. I’m just saying that the problem is that the entire immigration/deportation process needs a complete overhaul, much like the education department, neither of which will ever happen amongst the bureaucrats.

So, Mr. McCain, stop throwing me rainbows and lollipops (I can get that from Obama); give me a plan.

Mrs. Happy Housewife on July 11, 2008 at 9:41 AM

How many Conservative votes does McCain lose for every Hispanic vote gained?

Does he not read the research? Hispanics now and probably for the duration of McCain’s life will vote overwhelmingly Democrat. WTF is wrong with him? Why is he so stubborn on this issue? Honestly what is his goal? I hope he loses. I really do. If we’re going down the toilet then dammit, let Obama lead the charge. The Dem cockroaches will have no where to hide and no one to blame but themselves.

There is no way in hell I will be voting for McCain in Nov.

F15Mech on July 11, 2008 at 9:44 AM

Great analysis, Ed. It was a great impromptu comment when he made it. As a political ad it’s just more Hipandering by McShamnesty.

I still don’t understand his math.

Jaibones on July 11, 2008 at 9:44 AM

McCain is the worst GOP candidate at the worst possible moment. With two of the biggest issues favoring the GOP (energy and immigration), we have a candidate that takes the Dem approach to both.

DerKrieger on July 11, 2008 at 9:44 AM

The purpose of this ad is as simple as it is obvious:

McCain wants to put California in play.

And to that end it’s a good start. Regardless of polls, Barry’s not the kind of candidate your average guy in East LA’s got a lot in common with or sympathy for. And respect is a huge issue to him as well.

McCain’s showing him respect here.

I think this has a possibility to work.

Typhoon on July 11, 2008 at 9:45 AM

I guess this puts the whole “vote for McCain so we can pressure him in the right direction on this issue” argument to rest?

catmman on July 11, 2008 at 9:45 AM

McCain’s campaign obviously has some polling that shows him being competitive for Hispanic votes. That’s what this ad is driving at. It’s a pure pander to Hispanics. He got some pretty rousing applause at the LULAC meeting this week talking about the Hispanics who served with him in Vietnam and those who are serving now in Iraq, and he is going after those “traditional” Hispanics who value military service as opposed to Obama’s pure big-government approach to pandering. The Hispanics who are voters are naturalized citizens, and many of them are very patriotic. Republicans need to make headway with them or we will never be a majority party in this country again.

rockmom on July 11, 2008 at 9:46 AM

Mr McCain? I am not your freaking friend!!!!!!! Knock off that irritating line. God’s children( I understand “children” to mean people in general) are left to do their free will so stop using that phrase, too… because it means nothing constructive in the way you use it. Darn, my nose is gonna hurt from pinching it closed come November!

MNDavenotPC on July 11, 2008 at 9:46 AM

GOP candidates for the House and Senate need to distance themselves from McCain and run their own campaigns with strong Conservative themes. Any association with McCain will get them hammered by their Dem opponent.

and of course, as I was reminded during a townhall meeting with my Senator – “this guy is going to fix the illegal immigration problem”……right….

McCain needs to understand the difference between Legal and Illegal. No one here or anywhere else is opposed to Hispanics, just illegal immigration.

The GOP needs to stop cowering before the Hispanic ethnic lobbies and stress the difference between citizens and invaders. Stop lumping all Hispanics together.

Lake meade will be dry by 2021, not the river that feeds it, but the lake will be drained by drawing more than the river supplies.

A truly sad quote that I thought I would never hear in the U.S.A. The Governor of Tennessee said that his state would defend it’s borders, and this was in response to a land grab by Georgia, to gain access to the Tennessee river. A move to supply water to a thirsty Atlanta, that grew with no plan to supply basic needs to it’s residents.

H1-B visas are routinely used not for their original purpose but instead to replace high skilled American tech workers.

Yes America when it was young and immature needed immigration, but that time is past and we’re a mature nation now. It’s time we put our citizens needs and rights first, and profits and political power second.

jgapinoy on July 11, 2008 at 9:55 AM

We’re colossally ignorant and blind and yet you’re the one who’s falling for the biggest pandering ad yet made by McCain.

And how is he trying to woo immigrants with this?

Seriously, what is with people who only equate Hispanics with immigrants? You’re just as bad as Geraldo.

He’s only trying to woo Hispanics, while calling those of us who disagree with illegal immigration racists for not realizing that Mexicans are people too as though that has anything to do with the topic of illegal immigration.

They are still producing children (future workers) who will save social security and Medicaid.

This is why I will vote against Obama by voting for McCain, but he will not get a dime from me.

How did we get stuck with him?

The funny things about this is that I am sure we could get a Law Professor somewhere to say he should be Crown King of the US and by default be awarded the Presidency.

But maybe we should play along with the NYT and claim he is not eligible to be president.

There is still time to get someone else.

WoosterOh on July 11, 2008 at 10:10 AM

Bill Quick made the case some time back that McCain is deliberately flipping off conservatives. He is betting the election that he can win – and consequently govern – without us:

I think John McCain has made it his project to break the power of the conservative movement in the Republican party.

Take another look at that list of infamy. That’s what I called it. That’s how a lot of conservatives feel about it. But McCain doesn’t feel that it is infamous. He thinks it is laudable. Praiseworthy. He think it is a blueprint for how a successful GOP should proceed.

He thinks conservatism is a dead ideology that doesn’t recognize that the world has moved on. It has lost its relevance in a nation where the old paradigms are falling away. We are becoming a nation of Mexican and Latino immigrants, legal and illegal. That must be recognized and catered to. We can no longer afford the wild swings and gyrations of what he views as unfettered capitalism. The people at the top make – and keep – too much money. He proposes to fix that. All of the rest of his programs and policies reflect -not a conservative sensibility – but an accomodationist, populist vision: He sees the future of America as One Big Party, with all those scurrilous, hard-nosed, stubborn shell-backs on both the left and the right who prate that principles are more important than pragmatic politics effectively sealed out of the process of representative government.

And so he is deliberately turning his back on “the (not his) base.” He’s taking an enormous gamble, but from his point of view, if he wins, the payoff is even greater. He will have demonstrated to his party that it doesn’t need to depend on a conservative base, it can achieve power by marshaling the great populist middle to its banners.

Food for thought…

Esthier on July 11, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Race doesn’t have anything to do with it. Americans are having fewer children and we won’t be able to sustain those programs. I don’t like it and I would like to see a reversal. People are getting pets instead. My inlaws had 11 children. I had 4 children. None of my kids has more than 2 children. Suggestions?

Connie on July 11, 2008 at 10:16 AM

This is a monumentally stupid ad.

Nah, I wouldn’t go that far…

And I’m someone who has a little more sympathy for McCain’s efforts on immigration than most on the Right.

Me too. Although, as you say, congressional conservatives have chosen to remain mum on this issue, McCain has made it clear already that he plans to tackle immigration reform as a number one issue. May has well put an ad up front about it.

Remember, Obama still leads McCain in Hispanic support 2-1.

Connie on July 11, 2008 at 10:07 AM

Yeah, we certainly need immigrants, as the native population doesn’t reproduce at a high enough rate. Of course the whole thing got messed up with the illegal crossings and the unassimilated illegal class that now exists. But imo, we would have many many new Americans of Mexican descent even if we had always done it legally.

JiangxiDad on July 11, 2008 at 10:16 AM

McCain is a modern day Benedict Arnold….plain & simple.

Hold my nose & vote? No, I’ll keep my honor & vote ONLY for patriots….none of which are running for president.

DwnSouthJukin on July 11, 2008 at 10:16 AM

This add is an attempt to short circuit the firestorm which will come from the right next week after the La Raza speech.

He’s attempting to once again, put the racist anti immigration label on those who oppose ILLEGAL immigration.

He’s taking a page out of the Dem playbook, and trying to frame the terms of the debate… as he did once before when he essentialy called us pro Law folks racist.

Won’t work, its too transparent.

McCain has made it clear already that he plans to tackle immigration reform as a number one issue. May has well put an ad up front about it.

Then he loses. The number 1 issue is energy and the economy. That could be replaced by national defense if need be. Immigration reform can be in the top 5-10.

Funny,

how Democrats pander for votes to every special interest group known to man, including those apologetic to terrorists, and those who’s only interest is, to throw the United States into economic chaos.

Yet,

When a Republican does it, we get our panties in a knot, as if it were the end of the world.

Please. This whole, McCain is as bad as Obama joke went from lame to stupid the first 50 times it’s been said on this site. There is no way you can look at Obama and McCain can conclude this.

wise_man on July 11, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Maybe RedPill was right and McCain won’t be the nominee after all. The New York Times is reporting that McCain is not a naturalized citizen.

JiangxiDad on July 11, 2008 at 9:58 AM

Nothing is going to come of that. Figures the MSM has nothing better to attack McCain on other than a tiny technicality of birth, that won’t make any difference.

I agree…The economy and the war trump immigration reform. But I also agree with McCain that we really need to do something about it very soon. Ignoring it for another 4 more years isn’t an option anymore.

Remember, Obama still leads McCain in Hispanic support 2-1.

Our standard of living got too high. We grew up too affluent. If we have too many kids, we can’t have all the goodies, or pay for college and grad school. That’s the fine mess we’ve got ourselves into.

(btw, you need more than two kids to replace two adults. )

JiangxiDad on July 11, 2008 at 10:27 AM

Well, I for one never wanted to make an issue of Obama’s supposed birth certificate…just as I never believed he is a Muslim.

But didn’t the issue of McCain’s birth come first? They fired the first shot.

JetBoy on July 11, 2008 at 10:32 AM

That would be fine with me. We still need the workers, however.

Connie on July 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Growth potential is not unlimited. Every worker needs a minimum amount of resources to live, and to supply an ever growing population needed to feed an ever growing economy will require more resources than the environment can supply. Which will require all of us to resign ourselves to a much lower standard of living. We will come to resemble a third world country.
