Can we possibly be this lucky?

One of the most consequential decisions a presidential candidate has to make is that of running mate.  It speaks volumes about judgment, and is even more important than the running mate him/herself.  What does that say about Barack Obama’s decision to take a close look at Friend of Angelo Chris Dodd?

The former White House hopeful and Connecticut lawmaker indicated Wednesday that he has been approached by the campaign. “There’s been some inquiries, yeah,” Dodd said. “They ask for a lot of stuff. I’ll leave it there.”

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton and Dodd’s Senate office declined comment Thursday.

I’ll bet they did, although it’s pretty easy to see the reasoning here.  Dodd championed the effort against the FISA reform bill that passed with Obama’s vote this week, and got signed into law by President Bush yesterday.  Obama has been trashed by the Left all week long, and he needs to find a way to get back into their good graces — and their pocketbooks.  What better way than to signal that Dodd might get added to the ticket?

Maybe he would have been better off asking Russ Feingold instead.  Dodd’s activities sharply contrast with Obama’s supposed commitment to reform and change.  Let’s review Dodd’s involvement with Countrywide Mortgage while acting as chair of the Senate Banking Committee, shall we?

Two U.S. senators, two former Cabinet members, and a former ambassador to the United Nations received loans from Countrywide Financial through a little-known program that waived points, lender fees, and company borrowing rules for prominent people.

Senators Christopher Dodd, Democrat from Connecticut and chairman of the Banking Committee, and Kent Conrad, Democrat from North Dakota, chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, refinanced properties through Countrywide’s “V.I.P.” program in 2003 and 2004, according to company documents and emails and a former employee familiar with the loans.

The Friends of Angelo [Mozilo, Countrywide's CEO] program saved Dodd $58,000 in interest on his mortgage and all points and fees on the loan.  This came while Dodd sat the committee that regulated the industry, and later chaired it.  It’s the kind of who-you-know backscratching that Obama supposedly wants to end in Washington DC, and now he wants to consider making Dodd his VP?  So much for “change you can believe in”!

And let’s not forget that Obama dumped his VP vetter Jim Johnson for the similar kinds of personal-enrichment exercises through friendly loans.    Does that mean that Obama wants to toss his bus-tossing under the bus?

I doubt we’ll get this lucky.  Dodd may help Obama kiss and make up with the hard Left, but he’s far too easy a target for the Republicans for Obama to take on his baggage in a general election.  The mere fact of his consideration is gift enough.

Obama is playing the “I will photo op with all the VP Candidates to see what the reaction is”

Basically this is typical stuff and nothing hardcore.

Obama needs an attack dog so I look for him to go with someone a little more abrasive.

William Amos on July 11, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Obama won’t pick Dodd for VP.

Even Obama is not that stupid.

AZCoyote on July 11, 2008 at 10:56 AM

Thank you Obama. I love you. Yes, please choose Dodd :)

JiangxiDad on July 11, 2008 at 10:57 AM

This could make Connecticut into a swing state. One Senator might be the Dem Veep candidate, the other (a former Dem Veep candidate) campaigns for McCain.

And the Countrywide people heave a sigh of relief.

Another little wrinkle: if Dodd is elected Vice President, and resigns from the Senate, his replacement would be appointed by Republican Governor Jodi Rell. Anyone for U.S. Senator Rob Simmons, R-CT?

Steve Z on July 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

sadly I think AZ is right.

When the choice is between a woman who got more than 50% of the democrat vote in the primaries, and the old white guy. Of course the democrats will choose the old white guy.

Yes, pick Dodd…the same guy who said Robert Byrd would have been “good for this country” at any point in its history, specifically mentioning the post Reconstruction period.

Chris Dodd and Trent Lott: parallel circumstances, divergent outcomes.

Exactly. Dodd is more likely to be on the short list for some cabinet post than on the ticket itself. Plus, Obama needs to ingratiate himself with the pissed of feminists that McCain is also courting.

highhopes on July 11, 2008 at 11:13 AM

McCain/Feingold ‘08

aengus on July 11, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Now that’s what I call a dream ticket- Easy to decide to sit the election out when the choice is that clear.

highhopes on July 11, 2008 at 11:15 AM

Who does Obama have to pick from?

The only choice which would NOT hurt him is someone with absolutely no political record who also can read nice speeches…

Obama-Dodd sounds like Achmadinijad. Great choice, hope he goes with it.

Anyone for U.S. Senator Rob Simmons, R-CT?

Steve Z on July 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Steve – speaking as a fellow (?) CT resident – if only it were possible.

Yes Obama, please pick Dodd. At the very least it would help put CT out of at least a little bit of it’s misery.

It blows to be a conservative trapped in this liberal wasteland.

KrisinNE on July 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM

The fact that Dodd is willing to tell the media that Obama has talked to him about the VP position is probably a pretty good indication that this is nothing more than a PR sop to the far left.

If he were an actual, real live, VP posibility, Dodd would have kept his mouth shut. He’s been a politician long enough to know that much.

MarkTheGreat on July 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Yes, Bambi! Please pick the blowtoad!

Travis1 on July 11, 2008 at 11:25 AM

If he picks Dodd, he will be able to keep a closer eye on him. That is how this fits in to the “hope and change”. I can’t believe none of you see that!!

exhelodrvr on July 11, 2008 at 11:29 AM

I heard this on the radio this morning and almost fell out of my chair.

Chris Dodd, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, has done nothing while the worst banking crisis in a generation has unfolded. Instead, he took off for Iowa for six months in a quixotic run for President. He refused to even authorize any other Democrats on the Committee to hold hearings or write any legislation while he moved to Iowa. Then he came back and sheepishly just rubber-stamped a bad housing bailout bill that Barney Frank shoved through the House.

There has been a Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac regulatory bill written for three years, and it passed the House over a year ago. It might have saved the taxpayers from an impending 5 trillion dollar bailout of Fannie and Freddie. Chris Dodd did nothing to get it through the Senate.

Worst. Senator. Ever.

yakwill83 on July 11, 2008 at 11:31 AM

If Obama wants to suck up to the Left, he should pick Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island.

rockmom on July 11, 2008 at 11:32 AM

The Friends of Angelo [Mozilo, Countrywide’s CEO] program saved Dodd $58,000 in interest on his mortgage and all points and fees on the loan.

B Husein got a better deal on his own dirty loan, so he figures that Dodd must be in the clear.

There is no limit to have low these folks will go.

Upon second glance, dumb as sh*t.

IreneFingIrene on July 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM

We have 3 and a half months left to this kabuki dance and less than 10% of the electorate to sway to vote for one or the other.

Obama could have Satan/Hitler/Pol Pot/Mao’s lovechild as a running mate and 45% of America will still vote for him.

ABAR – Anybody But A Republican
(even if it happens to be S/H/PP/M’s lovechild)

rockbend on July 11, 2008 at 11:38 AM

To KrisinNE: I am in CT, and share your frustration about being a conservative trapped in a liberal wasteland. I try to do my part by donating to GOP candidates out-of-state, where they have a chance of winning. Although Lieberman was the least of three evils–I voted for him in 2006, after voting against him TWICE in 2000. Does that make me a flip-flopper?

In my (fairly affluent) town, people keep voting for Democrats for Town Council, then keep voting down referenda on budgets for massive property tax hikes. Why can’t people learn that they would have lower taxes voting for Republicans?

I mentioned Rob Simmons because he had been a Republican Congressman in District 2 (eastern CT) for three terms, and lost by less than 200 votes in 2006–he could make a comeback.

Steve Z on July 11, 2008 at 11:39 AM

No, but we CAN dream.

abinitioadinfinitum on July 11, 2008 at 11:54 AM

rockmom on July 11, 2008 at 12:16 PM

The idea that the McCain camp is going to bring up banking is ludicrous, right2, when McCain was involved in his own.

Anything the right accuses Obama of doing, McCain has done worse.

That goes double for the spouses.

It’s Mutually Assured Destruction on the low road, low brow, petty front this time around.

We might actually get a campaign based on issues instead of dreary little smears this time around…imagine.

alphie on July 11, 2008 at 12:21 PM

The Dems picked Obama to run because Chris represented the middle of the road in the liberal party and thats not radical enough.

Middle of the road liberal, experience, senior status…bad, radical, inexperienced, far left collectivist…well, thats bad too.

about 7/10 of his first group of top choices would have been God Sents. I mean the top tier of the party is so flawed if Obama picked anyone above a small NM mayor he’d be opeing himself up to so much attack.

Lately the MSM has been playing up Hitlery as among the candidates as Messiah’s running mate.

But there is no way on earth that Obama will EVER select Mrs. Clinton as his running mate.

At least, not if he’s as smart as the libs all say he is.

Because if he DID select her, and if she DID become his Vice-President, I wouldn’t bet on his life lasting out his first term.

Yes, I LITERALLY DO believe that Hillary would have Obama assasinated to gain the presidency if she could.

And I hope Obama understands that if he want to someday live to walk his daughters down the aisle, regardless of who gets elected.
