ABC: Obama’s Iraq plan “almost impossible”; Update: Video added

Barack Obama has spent the last month waffling on whether he will stick to his 16-month evacuation plan for Iraq, saying alternately that he will “refine” the policy with input from the commanders or that the commanders will take input from him, once in office. ABC News spoke to the commanders and their officer corps in Iraq and got some input first, and discovered two points Obama hasn’t taken into consideration. Not only do they not want to leave, but if they do, they’d like to take their equipment with them:
The military has been redeploying troops for years, and Maj. Gen. Charles Anderson, who would help with the withdrawal, told us as we toured Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, “We have the capacity to do a minimum of two-and-a-half brigade combat teams a month — can we expand that capacity? Sure. Can we accelerate? It depends. It depends on the amount of equipment that we bring back. And it’s going to depend on how fast we bring them out.”
It is the equipment that is the real problem. …
90 percent of the equipment would have to be moved by ground through the Iraqi war zone, to the port in Kuwait, where it must all be cleaned and inspected and prepared for shipment. This is a place with frequent dust storms, limited port facilities and limited numbers of wash racks.
While Anderson and his troops have a positive attitude, several commanders who looked at the Obama plan told ABC News, on background, that there was “no way” it could work logistically.
This is the kind of information that policy makers usually get before formulating policy. We can rotate troops out of Iraq on the kind of timetable Obama suggests, but we’d have to leave all of our heavy equipment in Iraq. Unless Obama plans some kind of nationwide garage sale, that would be a rather large loss for the American military in materiel as well as making our exit look more like Dunkirk.
Obviously, Obama didn’t have any awareness of logistics when he made this proposal — and that’s the point. His lack of experience, combined with a hubris that he has consistently shown on the campaign trail, makes clear that he is in way over his head at this point of his career. He has no sense of military policy at all, and got the biggest call of the war — the surge — completely wrong. Yet he insists that he’s ready to lead this nation’s military during a time of war as Commander in Chief?
The troops in the field have strong feelings about premature withdrawal under any circumstances. As one soldier put it, pointing to his bulletproof vest, he doesn’t want his children having to wear the same gear in Iraq in 30 years because we (once again) bugged out before the job was finished. When Obama visits Iraq this summer, he will undoubtedly hear plenty of that sentiment — but they will also include a primer on logistics that Obama should have requested long before he started making promises about the pace of withdrawal.
Update: ABC covered this story on Good Morning America — and it gives an even clearer view of the issues at hand:
The biggest question here is — what’s the rush? If casualties drop to zero, then why not take our time and ensure stability?

Obviously Obama has no concept of logistics *in general*.
Given the changes to manufacturing and retail over the last 25-50 years, logistics is vital to understanding our economy.

Back in ‘88 / ‘89 the Army shipped our Battalion to Costa Rica from Panama to build a road through the jungle. It took our company two days to “road” all of the equipment to base camp about ten miles form port. It took much much longer when we left. Luckily we had a river in which to park to clean our heavy equipment.
This was very small potatoes compared to the logistics night mare that is his Iraq surrender plan. Obama is clueless and extremely dangerous.

He has no clue, neither do most. Every vehicle, trailer, box and bag has to be CLEAN. Not because it looks good, but for agricultural laws and maintenance reasons.
3rd ACR has already left behind their equipment once. We aren’t talking a couple of tracks. Two squadrons of heavy armor, one squadron of light armor, one squadron of attack helicopters, one squadron of support/recovery vehicles. It took eighteen months, and hundreds of millions of dollars, to re-equipment the regiment when she returned from her last tour. They were re-equipped with the best of the best. All these items have to be road marched (mostly piggy back)
to Kuwait and washed out, washed out again, washed out again and then washed out. Not hosed off…SCRAPED to the metal. Then all has to be loaded on ships to Houston and then railed back to Hood. 5,000 men, 200+ vehicles/aircraft
don’t just get FEDXd in/out of Iraq.

Agricultural laws?
CP on July 11, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Obama already knows this. He has his rehearsed lines already preped should he win.
“Today, given information I was not privileged to see as a candidate, I am changing my position on Iraq. This is not a flip but a nuanced transition to a more enlightened reflection of the wonderful progress that continues to be made in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mind you, this progress has been the result of continued demands by myself and other Dem leaders these last six years. The voters have spoken and as such I will continue to speak to their concerns. Let me also take this opportunity to address concerns that I may not cut the Defense budget as a consequence. You can be assured that I will surpass Bill Clinton’s two trillion in cuts. There are several programs on going that I shall terminate, as these won’t be necessary after I speak to our avowed enemies. Gracias.”
It was further reported that several people in the audience fainted as Obama spoke bringing that body count to 97 since he took office.

… making our exit look more like Dunkirk.
And that’s really the point, isn’t it? The war is over, we’ve won, so why are they still talking about withdrawl? Because it’s still not too late to APPEAR to have lost.

Colonel_prop on July 11, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Good ol US laws. NO dirt allowed out. The vehicles/equipment have to pass agricultural and environmental inspections before they can be loaded and transported to the United States. The military is stuck with the same BS red tape as anyone else.
Example: an oil spill in a motor pool is reported as a POLLUTION violation and the unit can actually be FINED for pollution.

There is no situation so difficult, that it cannot be helped by a little bit of magic. Obama has to merely wave his wand, and all of the logistics problems will melt away.

Yeah, and I don’t want MY kid to have to wear one HERE AT HOME because the terrorists have regrouped and followed us back to the States! Keep our professional killers over there to kill the terrorists! If we appear to retreat, they appear to win and that will swell their ranks, thinking we’re on the verge of collapse like the USSR was after they left Afghanistan. Our victory depleats their ranks and kills their recruitment. Why is this so hard to understand? You’d think if anybody knows this it’d be a guy named “Hussein Obama”.
Tony737 on July 11, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Me either. Our M60s would ‘mark the spot’ more often then not. My son’s M1A2 is much better but any stateside motor pool is now randomly inspected and fines are issued by the EPA. Even for a spilt quart of oil (if discovered).

Cleaning the equipment actually makes sense though. Don’t you guys ever read the news about how foreign bugs end up in the US due to maritime shipping containers and end up killing whole species of trees?
Dutch elm disease? Does that register with anyone here? I am not sure where Dutch elm came from, but a foreign bug could do much the same devastation. My grandparents had a yard full of trees that they lost.

Obama should look into withdrawing from Afghanistan, after all, the death rate there among the Coalition is much higher than in Iraq.
There’s what, 20,000 troops in Afghanistan? 8 have died there this month, as opposed to 5 in Iraq with around 145,000 troops.
That’s 0.4 per thousand in Afghanistan and 0.03 per thousand in Iraq – a whopping 13 times more per soldier.

And the best way to reduce those KIA numbers in A-stan is to have a surge there. (I know you were being sarcastic, but it opens the door). Libs don’t get it, even after it’s been proven in Iraq, that MORE Troops = LESS KIAs. And more Troops = more dead terrorists. More dead terrorists = fewer terrorist attacks. Back in August of last year, Baseline Magazine did an analysis of exactly what it would take to get everyone and everything out of Iraq – 2 years to get 160,000 troops and 9 million tons of equipment out of Iraq.
Indeed, as of May 2007 the US Transportation Command, working with the DoD on using reverse logistics to plan a withdrawal, says it has overseen 4 million passenger trips and moved 9.1 million tons of cargo and 4.5 billion gallons of fuel in or out of Iraq.

We’re doing that with small stuff, but our best helicopters and tanks could only be replaced by Congress spending big bucks (fat chance) with contracts that would take years to approve and fulfill. Ditto with our computer gear, etc.
For things like Hesco barriers, it’s probably cheaper and more helpful to leave them there IF Congress will budget their replacements, which are on a different account than the cost of shipping things back. Part of the cost of shipping things back is soldier labor and time, which cuts down the amount of training soldiers do. Soldiers need to train and the love to train (so long as they get a little R&R in between).

My niece, Katelyn, stationed at Baluud , Iraq was assigned, with others of her detachment, to be escort/guard/watcher for Martha Raddatz of ABC News as she covered John McCain’s recent trip to Iraq.
Katelyn and her Captain stood directly behind Raddatz as she queried GI’s walking past. They kept count of the GI’s and you should remember these numbers. She asked 60 GI’s who they planned to vote for in November. 54 said John McCain, 4 for Obama, and 2 for Hillary.
.
.
.
ABC showed 5 GI’s being asked by Raddatz how they were going to vote in November; 3 for Obama and 2 for Clinton .. No mention of the 54 for McCain.

Ooops, my bad. The Red State link did not mention when the ABC piece was supposedly aired (one guess was 4/7/08, but it could not be found on ABC’s archive).
However, with a track record like that, I’ll hold out judgement on the change of tunes regarding ABC’s recent journalistic reporting.
