Video: Six years for sex on the beach?
posted at 5:45 pm on July 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
If Westerners want to avoid prison time in Arab or Muslim nations, they should refrain from having sex in public — especially after being warned to stop by the police prior to their arrest. That’s the real lesson from Michelle Palmer’s tribulations, and even she realizes that much — now. However, the potential for a lengthy prison sentence, perhaps as long as six years, has her hoping for international pressure to get her released:
It was last Friday when police caught Miss Palmer and Mr Acors having sex on a beach popular with expats and holidaymakers.
They had met hours earlier at a champagne brunch at Le Meridien Hotel where Miss Palmer got extremely drunk before going for a walk along the shore with her companion.
A police officer later spotted the pair having sex on the sand and let them off with a caution but the pair ignored the warning and were arrested when the officer returned to the scene.
According to police sources, Miss Palmer, originally from Oakham, Leicester, launched an angry tirade at the officer upon being disturbed for a second time.
She is alleged to have hurled abuse and tried to hit him with her high-heeled shoe before being restrained and taken to a cell.
Does six years seem excessive? Yes, but then again, Dubai isn’t the US or the UK. I’m surprised the policeman let them off with a warning the first time, and the alleged assault would have any jurisdiction looking to teach a perpetrator a lesson.
Dubai has a reputation as a party town for Westerners, and perhaps that plays into this case. The authorities may want to send a message to the non-Muslims who make a habit of participating in alcohol-fueled mischief in their city. In a land where “rude gestures” on the highway could lead to a jail sentence and the law insists on “modesty” from both men and women, doing the nasty on a public beach is almost guaranteed to garner severe punishment.
The lesson? Don’t drink to excess in Muslim countries, or one could wake up with a six-year hangover. I suspect in the end that Dubai will deport Palmer after a few months, if for no other reason than to maintain friendly relations with the UK.

Don’t drink excessively, have sex in public illegally, ignore warnings, and then attempt to assault an officer.
amerpundit on July 10, 2008 at 5:49 PM
It’s okay here to have sex on the beach after being warned by police?
Admittedly, it’s not a 6 year sentence. But come on. If you’re gonna travel, it’s usually smart to follow local law.
lorien1973 on July 10, 2008 at 5:52 PM
I’ll have a little more respect for Dubai’s morality laws when they explain this. Until then, I’ll do my drinking here.

Lock her up.
If you’re an immigrant or visitor, obey the laws of the country you’re in.
Wait…where have I heard that before…?
Nessuno on July 10, 2008 at 5:54 PM
As much as this kind of barbaric justice system annoys me, if you screw around while being hosted by an entirely different culture, you deserve whatever you get for being reckless and ignorant.
MadisonConservative on July 10, 2008 at 5:56 PM
I guess I’m an old stick-in-the-mud, because I don’t think anybody should be having sex in public, whether in Dubai, the UK or here in the U.S. Have they no self-control, or are they just animals rutting? They deserve to go to prison. It’s really a shame at how low our morals have fallen. This woman is trying to garner sympathy; 30 years ago she would have (and should have) faced social isolation.
Michelle Palmer, you’re a s**t and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Special K on July 10, 2008 at 5:57 PM
Try that in Saudi Arabia! The lash and sword come to mind.
Annar on July 10, 2008 at 5:59 PM
When you’re in a country with a culture different from yours, don’t do things that are offensive to that culture. That simple rule will help you avoid lots of problems. If you’re in a muslim country, don’t drink, don’t sunbathe topless, and don’t get in the face of the local authorities.
Cicero43 on July 10, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Btw, no one says she is getting 6 months. The sentencing range is from 3 months to 6 years.
Let’s hold our outraged over a 6 year sentence until she’s sentenced.
If you’re really outraged over a 3 month sentence, then have at it. But 3 months seems reasonable, given she was warned first, and she apparently attacked the policeman with her shoe.
Nessuno on July 10, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Sandy sex with a punishment chaser? 20% of San Francisco is making travel arrangements as we chat.
Patrick S on July 10, 2008 at 6:05 PM
She tried to attack the officer with her high-heeled shoe?
I’m gonna say it again. Deportation would be the lightest sentence she deserves.
RushBaby on July 10, 2008 at 6:05 PM
Yes, people. Remember that you can be killed for bringing drugs into Bali or Singapore. You can be jailed for a long time for drunk driving in Japan. Western justice does not cover us where ever we go. The world is not our playground.
ps. I wonder if Obama is embarrassed by Europeans having sex in public when they travel.
pps.I really don’t want to see people having sex on the beach.
MayBee on July 10, 2008 at 6:05 PM
What moron would engage in public sex in a Muslim country?
She deserves jail time for her criminal stupidity.

Too bad, so sad, go to jail.
Next time obey the law in the country you’re visiting, fools.
Dave Rywall on July 10, 2008 at 6:13 PM
I agree with MayBee. The world is not our playground. These people weren’t ignorant vacationers. He was there on business, she worked in the region.
So drunk they didn’t know what they were doing. Heck, I wouldn’t do that at home, and never have while visiting another country. That’s just asking for trouble. Maybe they are using that excuse for their behavior, which is otherwise indefensible.
Will the authorities cave in over bad publicity. And will the minimum sentence be seen as that?
cozmo on July 10, 2008 at 6:16 PM
Don’t these people read about the places they want to go to before hand? I’ve read tourist information for Dubai that does not support the “party town” reputation. In fact I’d be pretty uneasy going there for fear of inadvertently offending the locals or breaking a law that I didn’t understand or know about.
jmarcure on July 10, 2008 at 6:17 PM
How simple is this formula.
Don’t have sex on the beach in public, this is not a difficult concept to understand.
Why would someone need to be even told this?

Getting (possibly) up to 6 years for sex with a guy she met that day. She probably doesn’t even remember what he looks like!
ctmom on July 10, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Ed,
I might be able to accept this argument if it were not for the contra-argument that – intake of breath – Muslims are just like us, share our values, “Iraqi moms and dads” yadda yadda yadda.
Yes what this woman did was morally wrong but she is not being punished for any moral reason.
A few years ago a French boy was sodomised by three Muslim men in Dubai and when he was examined by a criminal psychologist the “doctor” told him to just admit he was gay. If it wasn’t for international pressure from the French government the whole thing would have been dropped.
So please lets not get too worked up over respecting the “moral” imperatives of savage, backward countries.
Now obviously I don’t condone lewdness or public indecency but to extend to the legal system of Dubai a fig leaf of respect gags in the throat.
We’re expected to do this because Muslims are paradoxically “just like us” yet they also foreign in a way that we have failed to respect. Figure that one out.
Dubai has a reputation as a party town for Westerners because that is how it sells itself. Personally, I would never visit this cheap, third-rate pseudo-Vegas.
The government of Dubai want it two ways – to get rich off Western infidels and enforce their primitive brand of “morality” at the same time.
The British (and American) and Dubai Governments collude in a lie that Islam is peaceful and tolerant and that Dubai is a fun place to go on holiday. Her “stupidity” as one commenter put it is the stupidity of Tony Blair and George W. Bush also.
aengus on July 10, 2008 at 6:35 PM
I agree, it’s not like she did something innocuous like naming a Teddy Bear Mohamed and she was given a warning and failed to heed it therefore I have little sympathy for her although I do think 6 years is a bit harsh, but then again she’s in Dubai not the UK or America.
It will be a hard lesson learned for her and this should be a sobering reminder for those that travel abroad…you don’t take your rights with you when you go to another country…plain and simple (for most).

Can’t remember where I read it, but there was an article about the MANY UK women that fly down to North Africa and have trysts with the native men there. It was very sad. The men of course treat them like they are in love and they are the only one, but they have a lot of them sending money.
Morals, in the toilet.

There’s a LOT of Muslim countries that are more repressive than Dubai (pretty much all of them last I checked — not that this is setting the bar all that high) so I don’t think this is a case of Imams Gone Wild. Frankly, I’d give the stupid bimbo a six-year club Fed vacation just for assaulting the police.

I get the feeling many conservatives are beginning to notice that Islam “is the solution” to their extreme leftist morality problem. Which is what I feared most all along. Dinesh D’Souza is an idiot, but on to something he doesn’t understand.
Throw in a batch of happy wife-beating pedophiles, and Houston…
Beagle on July 10, 2008 at 8:11 PM

And don’t forget – they get rich off Western men through what sure as hell seems like government sanctioned sex slavery, while simultaneously punishing a drunk chick for getting it on on the beach. Maybe because it was her free choice to do so.

Beagles right, while their behavior should be condemned in the strongest language possible, lets not forget that it’s because of Islam that these people are facing this, I hope in most peoples minds, excessive punishment. This should also be condemned.

Without wading through the comments I’ll give my opinion…I’ve spent time in muslim countries and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know their basic outlook on sex. Keep it in private and be as discreet as possible, especially when unmarried. I truly hope she and her male “friend” don’t wind up in prison but for cripe’s sake, show a little restraint when in someone else’s jurisdiction for cryin’ out loud.

Gee, maybe there is something to being culturally aware after all. It is their country with their laws.
Mr. Morrissey, it’s disappointing to see a fellow Catholic on the wrong side of the fence regarding evolution and ID, Islam as it relates to the war on terror and now minimizing the moral codes of other countries.
Blackbird, when my husband was in Iraq he was asked by an Iraqi interpreter why American Christians profane God’s name so freely while his religion requires him, if he uses the name of Jesus, to follow it with “Peace be Upon Him” and “Blessed be His Name”. Many good Muslims are very reverent and god-fearing. Just because in the U.S. we have sex on the beach, on the kitchen table, in the bar, on the streets and have embarrassed ourselves around the world with our tactless promiscuity doesn’t mean it is right. It isn’t.
I’m currently living in South Korea, an Army wife. Know what the biggest crisis is in the military here? Training for chemcial attacks against a N. Korean invasion? Nope. It’s sexual assaults by U.S. soldiers of Korean women. Our reputation preceeds us and perhaps we should stop immitationg godless Europe, which is by the way being demographically overrun by Muslims because they have abandoned their Christian heritage and are decreasing their “carbon footprint” and not reproducing or going to church, and maybe we should go back to basic morality 101.
It isn’t Bush who ruins the U.S. reputation in the world, it is liberalism and immorality, and I can’t figure out why so-called Conservatives are so willing to embrace the morality of liberalism. It used to be “It’s just sex” was the liberal mantra of Bill Clinton or Barney Frank. Now it’s ours.

wccawa on July 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
No it isn’t, aengus; you’re out of line. She would have gotten arrested and thrown in jail in Michigan, too. Having public sex and assaulting police officers is illegal pretty much everywhere, despite significant differences in sentencing guidelines.
Islam is a sickness, as far as I am concerned, and anyone pushing sharia in my neighborhood better be wearing Kevlar, but every state has the right to establish their own rule of law, and flipping off cops while breaking the law (while drunk) is just stupid.
And that has exactly what to do with Bush?
Jaibones on July 10, 2008 at 10:58 PM
No. But I have never held up Britain as a moral example to the world.
Jaibones on July 10, 2008 at 11:02 PM
I didn’t say she wouldn’t. The sentence you’re quoting isn’t a point in itself but a conclusion, an afterthought, on what I wrote before.
It has nothing exactly to do with Blair or Bush. Its the concluding sentence of a whole comment which no one is preventing you from reading.

Black Adam on July 11, 2008 at 12:46 AM
I bet you will NEVER attack someone pushing Sharia law…in your own neighborhood or any other.
I equally detest the creep of Sharia. But the bluster and bigtalk is really childish. “Better be wearing Kevlar…”
You may as well say “Stop of my mom will shoot.” Both scenarios are equally likely.
Keep idle violent threats to your D&D breakout sessions.

Hi Amy,
When you say “Europe, which is by the way being demographically overrun by Muslims” do you have any stats to back that up?
As of 2005 muslims are barely 5% of any European (excluding the Balkans) country, except in France where it’s 6% to 9%.

This is why I laugh every time I read about a newer, taller skyscraper going up in Dubai. Westerners are buying these places, but they don’t realize that Dubai is not the West – not even close.
People have to understand that they are under the local jurisdiction. There have been enough movies about this topic, for sure. And I don’t think Westerners have any excuse to not know what an islamic country is probably like. These are not domesticated cultures. They might look tame for a bit, but they are still wild.

Wow, the article about them forgot to mention their shoe size. Did you notice that the problem was that they were not married and not the geograhy of the act? Do you think the officer asked them their martial status the first time he talked to them or the second when he arrested them. The only bright spot here is that apparently they are being treated equally, probably a huge step forward for women over there. Never let it be said that stupid is cheap, if they luck out and just get deported this will be the gift that keeps giving. Vince Charming? Please.

I agree with OldEnglish, I don’t think Islam comes into this. I would be equally annoyed with them if they went to Amish country in PA, overcome by the beauty and simplicity and decided to go at it in public. I wouldn’t want to trip over them at Virginia Beach either. I doubt I will be making any public plea for their release. I do think that six years is tough but stupid is forever.
Cindy Munford on July 11, 2008 at 9:02 AM
Thank you, Cindy. I am ever ready to blast Islam – when deserved, but to do so unjustly only weakens our stance against extremism.
OldEnglish on July 11, 2008 at 9:15 AM
You can’t have a stance against “extremism” because that doesn’t make any sense. Neither does fighting “terror”. The War on Nouns can not be won.
aengus on July 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM
And visitors should know that before trying to have sex in public.

Esthier on July 11, 2008 at 10:25 AM
We need to separate the “trappings”, for a lack of a better word, of religions to the outright denial of human rights. When we went into Afghanistan I remember the constant joy that the women would no longer have to wear burqahs, and I thought then that the emphasis was wrong. Yes, lets be happy that they don’t HAVE to wear them but that they can if that’s how they are comfortable. In the U.S. we have an Amish community that shuns all things modern and we try to cherish their beliefs and protect them as best we can. We have Southern Baptist women who don’t wear slacks or make up, we could go on and on, we usually respect these desires but don’t feel the need to adopt them ourselves or alter the lifestyle of other citizens for their beliefs. There is a faction of Islam that does not promote the rights of all their believers but do indeed expect us to change instituions to accomodate their practices. Now I have problems. For decades there have been churchs that do not believe in mixed bathing and those beliefs were met with disdain until Islam. Now major instutions are bending to these demands. I am rambling but I think we agree this a fine line we are treading.
Cindy Munford on July 11, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Okay but I think there should be a public warning to tourists – if not quite a travel ban – to avoid Dubai and places like it.
aengus on July 11, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Aengus, at first blush, that seems kind of silly doesn’t it? But these people did do what they did! And they are British, who probably deal with the clash of the “civilazations” daily. I would love to hear their rationalizations. Oh wait, they already said they were drunk. Apparently in the U.K. that excuse goes a bit further then Dubai.

She is said to be a journalist in the UK, and we are all well aware of the UK’s msm bias towards Islam, always presenting it’s cohorts in the most imaginative postive light.
This incident should prove a valuable lesson to this particular journalist. Upon her eventual return to the UK, it will be interesting to follow up and see if her specific impressions have strayed from the msm line to any significant degree, or will she limit her distress to a specific time and a place without any further understanding of the long history & repressed culture of that time and place she found herself incarcerated.
heroyalwhyness on July 11, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I’m not really defending the crime which no one disputes is a crime but disputing the severity of the sentence. The title of this post is “Six years for sex on the beach” and that to me is scandalous.
I’ve been to Britain and its not like everyone there spends all their time getting into wacky hijinks involving Muslims.
The media and government won’t admit there is anything wrong with Islam and so the majority of “stupid” people only realise the truth when it lands on them a like a ton of bricks.

Agreed, and do we see the attempt of the media to do the same here? To many concessions being granted. I am pretty sure that Dubai is going to ship these folks home, anything much harsher would but a damper on the tourists. Or at least I am hoping that’s what they are going to do. I am not sure this will quailfy for too much protest from the West.

catmman on July 11, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Yes, you can. One can fight against extremism in any facet of life. When one takes a stance against an extremist, one is fighting extremism.
I will agree, however, that the phrase, “war on terror is incorrect” – against terrorism is more accurate.
OldEnglish on July 11, 2008 at 11:37 AM
Good grief! “war on terror” is incorrect.
OldEnglish on July 11, 2008 at 11:43 AM
That’s precisely why I dislike the word “extremism” being used. Its too broad.
Who are the extremists?
Creationists, Geert Wilders, “Islamists”, the Swiss People’s Party, Tom Tancredo i.e. pretty much anyone depending on who’s doing the talking.
For the MSM that means anyone who is against the total Islamisation of the world.

She’s lucky she was in Dubai. If she had been in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, she would have had a much, much worse penalty and no warning either. No alcohol either. It is forbidden. I worked for a year in Riyadh. All Westerners are given a good education before working in Arab countries as to the local rules and regulations and the penalties. I am sorry, but I don’t have any sympathy for her or him. Sex on the beach, in public, in any country…well, why do we even have to say how wrong that is. But in an Islamic country. Give me a break.
Glynn on July 11, 2008 at 12:30 PM
I can’t agree with this. Dubai is actually quite lovely and extremely liberal for an Arab country. They even allow Christian churches. Why in the world do people have to be warned not to have sex in PUBLIC? Good grief! The authorities will make an example out of them and then they will be sent home for a win/win.
Pretty silly behavior in general, let alone in an Islamic country.
If getting jumpy in public is there thing, how about drinking a few pints at a football match and taking a visit under the seats…..but go early lest you get wet from the used beer from above.
Stupid cows.

Sorry can’t fault the muslim laws for this one. The couple in question were idiots for not listening to their warning that they were lucky to get in the first place.

you didn’t say it, I said it. But I don’t agree that avoiding Dubai is a necessity. It’s a wonderful place to visit and has practically none of the contraints of it’s sister Arab countries.

Marc01, referring to Europe’s demography:
It’s the Demography, Stupid (not you, I’m not calling you stupid…it’s an article I wrote last in 2006)
The New Criterion:
You can read the rest of the analysis. Bottom line is that Europeans are not replacing themselves and Muslims are. They out-procreate the Europeans 4-1. You have to look at projections based on birthrates, not current populations.
