Terrorist attack on US embassy in Turkey
posted at 8:30 am on July 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
As terrorist attacks go in this age, today’s assault on the US embassy in Istanbul was small-scale, but deadly enough. Three Turkish policemen died and another injured, as was a bystander, while three of the four attackers got killed in the exchange. Police pursued a fourth attacker who escaped in a van:
Istanbul prosecutor Aykut Cengiz Engin said the attackers were armed with pistols and shotguns. Forensic teams were seen examining a shotgun on the ground.
The attack occurred right outside the high-walled consulate compound in Istanbul‘s Istinye district. Television footage showed four people lying on the ground at the foot of the consulate’s wall before officials removed the bodies.
Yavuz Erkut Yuksel, a bystander, told CNN-Turk television the attackers emerged from a white vehicle and surprised a guard.
“One of them approached a policeman while hiding his gun and shot him in the head,” Yuksel said.
Jim Geraghty spent quite a bit of time in Turkey, and shares his thoughts:
I never went into to the U.S. Consulate in Istanbul, but I went to the U.S. Embassy in Ankara many times during my two years in Turkey. The Turkish police stationed there were always friendly and professional. May the three policemen slain today RIP, and the wounded officer and wounded civilian make a full recovery.
The scale of this attack and its method doesn’t sound like an al-Qaeda operation. It sounds more like a small group of fanatics, perhaps not even Islamists, who couldn’t attack the fortress-like structure of the American embassy in any other way. If the police catch the fourth man alive, they’ll know more about the operation and the organization that staged it.

Three attackers exit van, start blasting away with handguns and shotguns. Fourth attacker stays in van, then escapes.
Sounds to me like the van had something in it that failed to explode. Otherwise what is the point of shooting a few guards?

Several guards stood in separate locations outside the entrance, but weapons were not on display …
Well there’s the problem right there.

You can bet on that. They don’t worry whether their interrogation methods are “uncomfortable” or not.

A boy eye witness on his way to mosque saw four men; three killed and one drove off. The men he saw had long hair and beards. Islamic jihad holds no regard for “flavor of the month”. (I felt badly that the boy’s full name was used in the article–terrorist backlash likely.)

Doesn’t look like AQ? Not important then?
AQ are not connected to the great religion of peace are they? Nothing to do with the religion they hijack and misrepresent? Only AQ is the enemy and they disguise themselves as Moops to give 99.999999999 of all Moops a bad name.
Protect Islam, the great religion of peace.

clearly, this is all because the US has troops in the middle east. If we just got rid of our troops and military, they’d never attack us.

I agree with Ed’s assessment. this was an amateur, homegrown attack that was an opportunity for martyrdom, but no chance of successfully striking the consulate itself.

Somethings weird. The overhead shot at BBC shows that it is a long walk from any guardpost to the embassy. Why would three gunmen try to run that gauntlet? At the time the guards went down the U.S. Marines in the embassy would be loaded for bear.

Attacking an embassy with a truck bomb? That’s so 1998.

It’s so wonderful to read classy smart ass comments when people are killed.

People are killed everyday. Should we be in perpetual mourning? Humor is a coping mechanism.

This is not good-the Turkey situ hasn’t been good for a long while. A luke-warm war, if you will. Sigh. And it’s been such a nice Summer.

Calling this a terrorist attack is like calling 9/11 genocide. Every attack on American interests is not a terrorist attack. The hallmark of a terrorist attack is to incite terror within the populace, something this attack will not and was never meant to do.

My daughter is a linguist attending the University at Istanbul. She sent me a message that said she got an e-mail from the consulate that didn’t have a whole lot of information in it. I don’t think they know much yet. She has been having a wonderful time there and I hope that this is just a case of a small group of wackos and that the people of Turkey aren’t in any danger. They have been very good to my daughter while she’s been there.
I told her to stay away from any place that seems likely to be attacked. Heh.

Seixon: OK then … it was a failed terrorist attack.
Failed to kill Americans, and failed to inspire terror.

Welcome to “ad hoc jihad” or “lone wolf jihad”.
If it was planned by just these attackers all it could’ve taken was a couple of minutes of planning on the ride down.
What surprises me is that this type of attack isn’t more common place across the world and especially here in America.
A small planning group or single jihadist: how do you stop an attack like that? Very simply: an armed citizenry.
The police and army can not and will not be there in time. Same as for any violent attack. As the quote goes “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!”
