RNC ad: Change that works for Obama

posted at 4:00 pm on July 8, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The RNC hits Barack Obama at his weak point: change.  Yes, Obama has run his campaign on change, but even his ardent supporters never thought that applied to Obama’s entire platform — and especially on Iraq.  Barack Obama won the nomination by running to Hillary Clinton’s left on Iraq, but now it appears he wants to outflank John McCain to the right.

Pretty effective, I think. It points out that Obama’s “assessment” got the surge wrong, and that the security situation has greatly improved thanks to a strategy he opposed. Had Obama just admitted he got it wrong and that the surge worked, this would have been a welcome step forward. Instead, as this ad shows, he’s basically lying about his previous positions and expects us to simply forget that if Obama had prevailed instead of McCain on military strategy, we would have surrendered to the terrorists we have all but defeated.

What does that say about Obama’s ability as Commander in Chief? What does it say about his honesty now? The ad demands answers to those questions.

Blowback

Good ad. But isn’t it early?

Rightwingsparkle on July 8, 2008 at 4:03 PM

haha Loved the end! I take it he had no teleprompter.

becki51758 on July 8, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Not bad. I usually think most political ads suck but this one was pretty good.

Dash on July 8, 2008 at 4:05 PM

The head scratching response at the end is brilliant.

Jimmy the Dhimmi on July 8, 2008 at 4:05 PM

What does that say about Obama’s ability as Commander in Chief? What does it say about his honesty now? The ad demands answers to those questions.

You would think the media would be demanding these answers.

KelliD on July 8, 2008 at 4:05 PM

This is all the RNC needs to do, use Barry’s own words…

Can’t call them liars when HE is the one making the statements…

Do it on energy, guns, Wright… don’t editorialize or make accusations… just simple film of Barrak (or is it Barry this week…).

Romeo13 on July 8, 2008 at 4:07 PM

This ad is probably a strategy to get the folks to realize the surge is working and we are close to victory.

Victory in Iraq + 5% congress approval = President McCain

Probably a little early, but there’s already so much material they might as well start working him over right now.

I personally like the “Love” ad better, but this one is good too. Question: If a tree falls in a forest w/ no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? I hope these ads make it to a TV near you!

Hunt035 on July 8, 2008 at 4:15 PM

Now they just have to run it.

Like that ever stopped them before. Remember, everything a Dem says has an expiration date attached to it. If more than 20 min. have passed, then it can’t be used against them, otherwise is a “right wing smear tactic”.

Good ad. But isn’t it early?

Rightwingsparkle on July 8, 2008 at 4:03 PM

McCain has been on the defensive of late — time to put the pressure on Barry, and make him address these flip flops. Also, it works on those Clinton supporters that are having trouble getting on Barry’s bandwagon.

Good ad. But isn’t it early?
Rightwingsparkle on July 8, 2008 at 4:03 PM

I would say so, but then again others are claiming that McCain and the republican party is drifting and not doing anything. This ad is current, this ad is about Obama, this ad shows him for what he is, and puts on record how he and his surrogates are attempting to re-write history, and they will get away with it unless there are ads like this to contradict what the democrats are doing.

It’s going to be a long 4 months.

wise_man on July 8, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Agree that the head-scratch at the end is terrific – definite LOL.

CK MacLeod on July 8, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Anyone else notice when Barack is about to lie he says “I’ve always said”? A very loose observation of B. Hussein will show this BS artist has never consistantly said anything. Everyone who ever attended college was aware of the campus BS artists. This one is running for President. It is just BS after all.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on July 8, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Where do these run? I haven’t seen any of these ads…

right2bright on July 8, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Wow – the head scratch is FANTASTIC – shows what a dunce he is. Plus, it’s telling that whenever dem’s want to smear McCain, they cut him off in mid-sentence to make him sound like he said something he didn’t…with obama, just let him talk without a teleprompter and he writes the ads for us himself.

JustTruth101 on July 8, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Well if McCain won’t take our advice at least the RNC will/does.

We should not be reading/seeing this stuff on the pages of the MSM, although it helps. We should be seeing split screen videos from the McCain campaign on a daily basis using Obama’s eloquent speech making against himself. If McCain’s folks are so clueless, and they appear to be so, the Repub National Committee should be running the adds themselves.

McCain and crew are letting this thing slip away. You can’t save up these gifts to be used in the last couple of months. You have to pound the message home every few days. Videos have to make it to YouTube to later be spread in emails etc. It has to be nonstop.

Personally I’m starting think McCain is really not into being President. I’m getting the feeling he is just grandstanding, akin to Schumer and a TV camera. There’s a certain timely disconnect here that should not be happening inside a professionally run Presidential campaign. Commercials about Obama flip flopping lose there punch when they show up weeks later. They have to be within days of the flop. Who’s running McCain’s video editing department? This is easy stuff.

He’s whiffing on softballs.

patrick neid on July 2, 2008 at 10:50 AM

It’s very important that McCain use this “judo” approach towards Obama. Hillary provided that lesson. You have to use him speaking his own words against himself. He is to deft with the spoken word to go tit for tat.

Never, never, forget he brought the Clinton machine down. Thank you very much Barack. Now it’s time for you to go.

patrick neid on July 8, 2008 at 4:33 PM

How does this help Michelle’s kids?

This guy has some major credibility problems and yet his support seems to not have dwindled. The only questions I have is whether his minions in the MSM will get tired of covering his lying a$$.

landshark on July 8, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Hey! Why did MY reference to “shambles” get deleted. The economy isn’t in shambles!

A few hours ago, I had the cathartic joy of telling two DNC/Obama solicitors here in Brooklyn “NO, I HOPE HE LOSES. I WANT HIM TO LOSE!”

Stephen M on July 8, 2008 at 4:43 PM

So far as I can see, Obama has consistently said that he NEVER said any of the things he’s flipped on. He wiggles and slithers around them and expects to be taken as credible. For some reason he sees this as perfectly OK. It’s getting very difficult to understand what strategy(if any)this man is using.

jeanie on July 8, 2008 at 4:47 PM

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on July 8, 2008 at 4:30 PM

I caught a few moments of Michael Medved in the car a little while ago. He mentioned that this deal with Obama is similar to Richard Nixon (and Clinton, to come to think of it) where you could tell he was about to lie because he would do the whole ‘Now let me be perfectly clear,” ….

Down, down, down ….. Obama is going down.

wise_man on July 8, 2008 at 4:48 PM

I’m reminded of that classic line about obfuscation (I used to have a poster with this on it):

“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but what you think I said is not really what I meant.”

:-D

rockmom on July 8, 2008 at 4:49 PM

From NRO Corner:

Get Ready [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

From Rush today:

“Donald Sutherland believes that Clinton people have infiltrated the Obama campaign and suggested he make policy changes, and that these changes are dooming The Messiah. This is a ripe opportunity for Operation Chaos: Phase II.”

So maybe it isn’t the direct-to-Soros-nano-aural implant that Stephen M suspected…

For all the people who want McCain to win and Obama to loose, you could contribute. If you want to.

For all the people who don’t agree with McCain (especially on illegal immigration,) you could pledge to the McCain a undred dollars, and then send them a check with a ‘first installement’ of $10, and write in the envelope that you will send the next installment of $90 when McCain listens to republicans and changes his dangerous stance on illegal immigration. If hundreds of conservative donors did this, then McCain might listen.

PappaMac on July 8, 2008 at 5:06 PM

That clip at the end could be a devastating ad all by itself. The Man With The Silver Tongue gets tongue-tied. It would be a GREAT ad to show during and after the DNC Nuremberg Rally. I’ve seen ads like that absolutely change campaigns overnight.

Maybe we need to split our donations. Half to McCain, to make pro-McCain ads like the “Love” ad, half to the RNC to make ads comparing Obama Before to Obama After.

On second thought, the Obama Flip-Flop File is getting so full these days, maybe the RNC should get MORE than half, while McCain runs a positive campaign. By the way, despite all of Obama’s money, the RNC has much more money than the DNC. There must be a reason…

A good ad would attack on the issues such as drilling to get the oil monkey off of Americans back, or cheering the huge success in Iraq that Obama and his ilk assured Americans would never come to pass.

A truly decent ad would have America laughing their assetts off at the leftists inherent stupidity. No one votes in a clown for POTUS . . . .

DannoJyd on July 8, 2008 at 7:09 PM

… he’s basically lying …

Finally.

Jaibones on July 8, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I argued that Obama would be a better candidate against McCain than Hillary, mostly due to the fact that both the left and the right despise her, which is not the case for Obama.

Now I’m feeling I was wrong. I never anticipated that Obama would completely implode his campaign the way he is now doing. When even DailyKos and the New York Times is pounding on him, you know its time to bring out the cowbell. I mean Defcon alert.

D2Boston on July 8, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Wow. His uplifting inspiring speeches are in stark contrast to his stumbling uh’s. Could his eloquence in front of a teleprompter now be a liability? The middle is expecting HOPE! CHANGE! after Labor Day. If all he has is stammering under direct questioning, and a platform that srongly resembles John McCain’s, he has problems, big big problems.

Has anyone noticed Obama use of the word consistent? Kerry whipped it out to cover his flip flops. He said consistent in every other sentence. That did not work out to well for him…
