We have demolition teams and such, the SOH is deep enough we would just need to get some ships like the SALVOR and the GRAPPLE over there to get them clear. The Navy in the meantime would have to keep the SOH clear of the Iranian Navy and the IRG-N. We may get some help from the Qataris and the UAE because they want their oil to get out.

Thanks to all for the kind words to my son. He has 4,999 brothers and sisters in his regiment and another 750,000 scattered from Seoul to Shangri-la! God bless em all. Doesn’t matter if they are a cookie 1200 ft down in a sub or a zoomie 30,000 ft up in the clouds, they’ve got our back.

I want BIG parades to honor the troops that fought so long and hard to reach victory. Yes, it can be a pain for the troops, but they need to feel the love from the core of America. (After WWI there was not one parade, but many. One per town that sent troops.)
We are close to decisive victory. Keep up the pressure. And 3rd Ar Cav – way to go!

I said this in another thread, but I’ll repeat it and expound.

I do have one small quibble with the bolded word. I know most people don’t do it intentionally, nor have malice when they use the term “our” in front of troops.

Nothing annoyed me more while I was in the Army to be treated like I was the possession of the American people. I, along with every other member of the military, volunteered to serve our country, not to be used as chattle for either side of the political divide when trying to score talking points. I deserved more respect than that when I wore the uniform and those who continue to wear the uniform deserve more respect than that.

The word “our” indicates ownership. This is “our” cat, house, etc. I know you people mean well, but when you have the looney left talking about bringing “our” troops home, or keeping “our” troops safe it makes me sick to my stomach. I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t entreat upon you to stop using a possessive pronoun when describing the troops.

Sorry if I sound like have sand in my vagina, but these are grown men and women who freely made a choice. They belong to no one.

The American People are our boss, and we have volunteered to “belong” to the U.S. for a period of time (thats why we just cant quit.

Your point is valid, but I hope you can indulge us in this area. Just like the Steelers are MY favorite football team, I certainly don’t OWN them. Heck, I’ve barely passed through Pittsburgh on the interstate – once – at night and we didn’t even stop. But we each have things/people/groups that we admire and (at least vicariously) associate with. We cheer the victories and mourn the losses of these valorous ones we’ll likely never meet in person, and can’t help but form attachments to them.

Squid, I agree with everything you said after the comma. Their is nothing in the oath we swore about serving the American people. However, I do wish we would do more about the enemies “…both foreign and domestic”.

And innominatus, you can say the Army is your favorite branch (cause they are the best -wink). Trust me, I know that nearly all here are unabashed patriots, that love the country and appreciate the sacrifice that those that chose to serve undertake upon the behalf of others. I appreciate that more than you will ever know.

However, that does not ignore the point about the left in this country using the “our troops” mantra in undermining the mission. As I pointed out, it would be hypocritical of me to disapprove of them using “our” to undermine the troops, while not asking those of you that support the Armed Forces to stop using “our”.

I hope that came off less [insert favorite derogatory term here for the limp-wristed, linguini-spined beta-males here].

I understand your point with respect to using it to express some exclusive claim, in the sense you are excluding others from such “possession” for political purpose or advantage, but you must recognize that all such uses are not done for that purpose and you need to remind yourself that the troops are the same as the founders, the president, this country. That is, they all are ours in the sense of being “of us” not “belonging to us”. It is a distinction with a difference, even if it does not appear to be different, on it’s face, in it’s possessive qualities.

I, for one, will work to keep your concern in mind, and watch that my use of “of us” does not spill over into “belonging to us”, but as a free and independent man, myself, being now responsible by having accepted the oath which my fellow countrymen have taken, on my small part, to me, I’ll not quit using the term altogther.

On this side of the aisle, yes. On the other side it is used to undermine the mission because we need to keep “our” troops safe, or “our” troops spend too much time away from their family, or the fact that “our” troops face too much hardship… I could keep going, but I think you get my point.
