Old soldiers just retreat?
posted at 10:39 am on July 5, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Wes Clark has decided to retreat redeploy over the event horizon after a week of criticism regarding his remarks about John McCain’s service. An aide says he wants to return to “pay[ing] the bills”, and he will suspend his political activities for the foreseeable future. The man who once appeared a likely candidate for Barack Obama’s VP slot now has become persona non grata instead, having given McCain a helpful boost in focusing on experience and military readiness:
Nearly a week after his controversial “Face the Nation” appearance last Sunday, retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark is taking a break from the presidential campaign — but many Democratic insiders think he has already been crossed off the list of Barack Obama’s potential running mates.
Sunday morning on CBS News, Clark argued that John McCain’s military experience — and his years as a prisoner of war — in no way qualified him to be president. Following his appearance, one prominent liberal blog, apparently seeing the genie as out of the bottle, launched into a considerably harsher attacks on McCain’s service headlined “Honestly, besides being tortured, what did McCain do to excel in the military?”
“On a scale of 1 to 10, Clark’s words were a 10 in terms of unhelpfulness,” said one Democrat who has helped manage past presidential campaigns.
In this case, Clark will retreat before getting publicly relieved of his responsibilities by Team Obama. The entire episode has done nothing but paint Obama and his supporters as anti-military, as the noted blog entry suggests. Worse, as Bob Schieffer noted in that Face the Nation interview last Sunday, Clark’s argument makes Obama look even worse than before. If McCain has had limited executive experience, Obama has had none at all; if McCain only commanded peacetime units, Obama never served at all; and if twenty-four years of serving on the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees haven’t prepared McCain for military and diplomatic responsibilities, what in Obama’s three years of Senate experience makes him better?
Clark couldn’t exit the stage quickly enough for Barack Obama at this point. Any chance Clark had of taking the #2 position on the ticket evaporated this week. All Clark did was remind Democrats of what a lousy campaigner he was in 2004, and in a single day showed he had learned nothing over four years.

Team Obama has to be real careful not to have anyone say what they all think and believe. That would be a disaster.

I don’t know.
The Republicans wasted a whole week attacking…a military man instead of Obama.
Less than 4 months to go and the right still can’t hit the right target.

‘An aide’ is doing a terrible job of covering up Clark’s shame…a better option for the entire Clark staff would be to take advantage of the opportunity to keep one’s mouth shut.
Better to just disappear quietly than to lose all remaining dignity in an attempt to…try to salvage some dignity. This transparent BS just makes it worse.

I know it’s off-topic, and maybe I’m late to notice this, but seriously…
beatcanvas on July 5, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Making Wesley Clark the VP candidate would seal the Democrat Party’s reputation as anti-military. How Obama could even think of a man with absolutely no respect from the military as a means of cementing their chances for the Brass Ring shows their true contempt. It makes Mike ‘Tanker’ Dukaukis look pro-military.
SeniorD on July 5, 2008 at 10:58 AM
It was an Obama supporter that said it for Obama. So the republicans were supposed to ‘attack’ Obama for saying nothing about McCain’s ability to be commander in chief? Seems like a fine response to Clark’s hypocritical statement considering that Obama has zero military experience.
And “the right” has been hitting Obama for the last 4 months on both the issues and the actions of his surrpgates, and will continue for the next 4 months as well.

When you are a general who is “removed” from command by Slick Willie, what credibility could you possibly have. I agree with SeniorD. Weasely Clark would be an albatross for Obamba and cost any chance of being elected.

Right on, Ed. Every one of Clark’s criticisms applies even better to Obama.
Also, as I recall, Obama and Clinton both conceded during the primaries that on the issue of national security, McCain was of course The Man, making Clark’s comments even more amusing.

Ed, would that you are correct!
Because your points do absolutely make logical sense, however, implies that they won’t land on the convoluting, malleable NEW teflon guru bobama target. Those foes whose minds deride rational Reason as inauthentic ever change for marx. Many are called, but few are chosen who have eyes that actually see what stands before them, the naked truth. Indeed, the banquet is prepared and the guests are either to arrive or not on cue.
Clark is so self centered, he actually committed his rebuke of McCain’s military record based upon Clark’s own. If y’all haven’t yet seen Clint Eastwood’s Heartbreak Ridge, make note of the former supplies commander’s personality and remember that during Vietnam, supply is where Clark began his experience upon graduating valedictorian from West Point, and his ON THE GROUND EXPERIENCE was limited within one month before he exposed himself to enemy fire and left the combat zone for good (unless I am mistaken, he remained stateside taking curriculum this and that and then teaching military social studies until Vietnam was over).
Bobama surpasses the flim-flam record. So long as bobama fails to emit one sincere apology, there is no reason to ever give him the benefit of any doubt; the facts destroy him. He only survives within the contrived PC bubble.

Sometimes it’s not the candidate himself that’s the problem, it’s his vocal supporters.
I wonder if Obama will suffer much more from his core support. In a way, Ron Paul…although I don’t believe he really stood a chance, would have probably done better if it weren’t for his core supporters being on the wacky side.

He was effectively relieved of command by BJBill and the Hillabitch…..
And there were only three groups in the military who wanted him gone: Those superior in grade to him, those inferior in grade to him, and those equal in grade to him.
As far as military competence goes, he was responsible for the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade (as the senior officer commanding), he nearly started a war with the Russians (as mentioned, thank goodness there were some flag officers with enough sense to disobey his lunatic orders), and his totality of experience in combat was what, a month? McCain had more time in combat BEFORE he got shot down than Clark has, total.

Meanwhile, for the political-financial elite worldwide powers that be, the DNC leadership characters whom we recognize in front of the bus, under the bus, behind the bus of this campaign ALL come cheaper than a dime a dozen for that elite. Meanwhile, those insulated power mongers who selected bobama bubble boy for POTUS continue to market him in beachball format:

=mass marketed for the youth whose eyes are bigger than their stomaches (hard as that may be to fathom but as witnessed by their tax gluttony at the expense of “others” aka YOU working Americans);
=The dysfunctional yet highly organized bobama voter block fails to appreciate that bubble boy’s beachball floats away with the tides of change, blows away with the winds of hardship, melts in the light of day, and pops upon impact given sharp logic or hard times leaving us ALL to suffer desparately between a rock and a hard spot.
