A tribute, on a day devoted to America and food, to the most American form of dining in the most quintessentially American city there is.

My kazoo is made of prime rib.

laelaps on July 4, 2008 at 7:19 PM

The more important question is “Can you hum it on your own?”

GoodBoy on July 4, 2008 at 7:21 PM

My neighbor owns a Chinese food restaurant.
Gourmet stuff but people wanted quantity over quality.
He relented and initiated a lunchtime buffet.
OK, Big guy comes in, pays his six bucks and proceeds to pile his plate with ALL the Egg Rolls and Crab Puffs. The most expensive items.
His wife calls into the kitchen to alert that people are waiting on Egg Rolls and Crab Puffs.
He come out of kitchen and sees what’s happening as the guy is getting up to refill his plate.
He takes the cash out of the till and gives the guy his money back and asks him to beat it.
The guy protests and Mr Wong yells at the top of his lungs…
“All you can eat don’t mean all YOU can eat!”

I once threw out my pancreas at a “Steak and Waffle” buffet.

Yep, steak and waffles.

Nasty stuff.

Sugar Land on July 4, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Damn, I thought I was gonna hear somebody sing about flip-flops and pop tops.

Where is Jimmy Buffett?

I did not see him in the video.

Have to share my favorite restaurant review EVAH. I swear this is a legitimate review. Makes me laugh every time I come across it. . .

FIRE MOUNTAIN (now renamed: Ryan’s Grill Buffet)

Epps Bidge Parkway, across from Wal-Mart (706) 543-8203

I liked the name when I watched this place going up. This is the worst food in town, but they bring it to you at a very reasonable price, and the portions are large! If you think the owners will be unhappy about this review, forget it. They could not care less.

You want buffet? They have it here in abundance. What kind of food? Everything from American to Mexican to Southern, to (sort of) Italian, to Soul Food. (Sorry, no nouvelle French.) Here there are multiple buffet tables. Much of the food is below the proper serving temperature. The largest buffet is the one for Dessert. That is no surprise, for in my single appearance at this restaurant, I saw more 300 pound people than I have seen in a week at DisneyWorld. On the plus side, it is relatively clean, when you consider the high traffic flow. This restaurant chain is a spin-off from Ryan’s Steakhouse. I would buy stock in this enterprise, and avoid the food. They may need to expand the parking lot. Welcome to Athens.

Lunch from 11:00am, Dinner to 9:30pm. Sat & Sun open at 7:30am. Walk right in.

OK, this is a web based advertisement for Alka Seltzer, and they had a pretty funny series of ad campaigns in the 60s and 70s. But I can’t get everything to play past the half way point. I NEED to hear the rest of the Buffet Song!

But if you go to their website, the visit to hippie dippie Whole Food festival in Davis, CA is pretty funny. Freaks.

Last year on our road trip across PA we ate at a place like that. Awful food and the place was packed wall to wall with large people. I’m 200pounds and I think I was the lightest male there and that included the little boys. There was one kid that couldn’t have been more than 8 and he must have weighed in at close to 300 pounds and a little girl that we joked about being Violet the blueberry from the Willy Wonker movie.

Worthless video.

GRUMPSPOT on July 5, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Worthless video.

GRUMPSPOT on July 5, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Yes and that is way it isn’t worthless.
All the best in life is worthless because enjoyment mostly comes from worthless endeavors we struggle to find worth in. Just sit back, take life in and pause to watch the grass grow every once and a while.

jmarcure on July 5, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Can’t stand buffetts. I call them feeding troughs.

Aggie85 on July 5, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Lame.

landlines on July 5, 2008 at 12:00 PM

That is awesome! I love this kind of humor. It’s kind of satire, but not exactly. The way they are singing and emoting so seriously, like the lyrics are so important. They’re really making fun of alot of the self-obsessed musical stars. LOL.

I wish they would do more of these. I visited the web site expecting more of same, but was disappointed. Their web site is kind of incoherent. (IMO)

gxpgxp on July 5, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Anti-lame.

Nice pisstake on the Obama music video too. And the guy on the left reminds me… of the guy from Third Rock from the Sun. “Harry”. He was in WKRB in Cincinatti, too.

You know the guy.

Yeah, him.

Reaps on July 5, 2008 at 4:28 PM

The ONLY Buffet restaurant I actually like is the chain “Sweet Tomatoes” and it has a salad Buffet that is actually healthy. But places like “Old Country Buffet” make me ill just thinking about it. That being said I do think these restaurants encourage you to keep eatting whether your hungry or not.

Conservaboomer on July 5, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Nice pisstake on the Obama music video too.

Hey Reaps,
I was wondering if this was a real song (and where it came from). It’s an Obama campaign song/video? Oh, that is even better! LOL. Dont think I have seen it.

gxpgxp on July 5, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Vegas sucks

Asher on July 5, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Ah, buffets.

Used to love them. Looove them.

Then me and the missus went to a Mandarin in a city nearby.

Mandarin, for my American friends, is a very successful Canadian Chinese food buffet chain.

The food is abundant, varied and very good.

The place was absolute chaos. If we hadn’t had a reservation we would have been waiting at least an hour and once inside it was “ass over tit, you couldn’t get a melon between them” chock full o’ people.

No. Buffet is no longer something I appreciate. I think an additional aspect is the unrelenting eating. It just seems….gluttonous.

Anyway, Happy belated ID to my American friends and Happy belated Canada Day to my fellow Canuckistanianists…whatever.

MT
