Indeed we do need to wake up. I was at a bbq yesterday and had to actually explain to some Christian friends why they shouldn’t vote for BHO. It was like talking to the hosts of Entertainment Tonight or something. Some people are invincibly ignorant.

McCain is merely the most unqualified candidate of the last 50 years or so.

This election makes my head hurt and my heart ache.

I’m hoping Steve Schmidt can do for McCain what Atwater did, but it may be too late already. And even if he manages to pull this off and win, I’ll be under no illusion that he will do anything remotely conservative unless it’s already something he has decided is correct, according to his own compass.

McCain suffers from collegial disease. Presenting his occupation as a holy priesthood allows him the freedom to do only as he pleases. In that respect, he is similar to certain journalists. If he can stay on the high road without being too critical of Obama, it reinforces the image of the Senate as a place where only royalty roam. Leo Durocher had a saying for how that generally works out.

“I intend for there to be more rain next year” makes as much sense.

In addition, Obama has continued to react to the experience argument by claiming his “judgment” is better. Seems to me he undercuts that whole argument by abandoning his position on Iraq. McCain showed even better judgment by calling for the surge and demanding a strategy that would actually win the war. Obama can’t run away from all his statements that the surge would not work. At least, unless McCain lets him run away from it.

Means, “Eventually, when we have won the war, however long that takes, I guess.”

You’ll have little argument from me wrt to your points, other than being even more precise in the semantics and the logic after coming up with mutually agreeable definitions of terms.

However, I was responding to a comment from a Senator from Congress, who, as you indicate, should know that war was never declared and hasn’t been since WWII.

Similarly so, in practical terms. And no matter how you desire to qualitatively characterize the actions in Iraq, ending it will not end the war for our soldiers.

I don’t mean to be snarky to any except those who, like Obama, want to use Iraq merely for their own political advantage, with his, “I will end the war in Iraq.” I want us to win the war in Iraq. If, in the process of winning, even our military finds it more desirable to use terms suggesting, not a warfare but police-fare by frequently characterizing their, and Iraqi, actions as arrested or detained, rather than surrendered or captured, it’s fine by me.

I won’t belabor my general point by wasting space explaining how Obama’s assertion is false from the practical perspective of his ending only our involvement, or merely suspending our participation in it, neither of which would either end or suspend the “war” for those he decides to have remain there. We all know it’s just words.
