Dems to short-change Denver on convention?

Has Denver suffered through organic fanny-packs and color-diverse food just to get shortchanged by the Democrats? According to the Los Angeles Times, the DNC may lop off a full day from the convention, opting for only three days rather than four. Ostensibly, this is to give Obama more of a bounce at the end, but the motivation more likely comes from worries of another kind of bounce altogether:
Barack Obama’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee are toying with a convention scheduling change that has been broached before in theory but never seriously considered: cutting the party’s conclave in Denver short by one day to give Obama an extra day of post-nomination bounce in the crowded August calendar.
For the last several decades — when conventions became forums that merely rubber-stamp a presumptive nominee — they have traditionally run from Monday through Thursday. Increasingly, both parties have struggled to offer something of interest during the first couple of convention nights, and the television networks have responded by dramatically reducing live coverage. The only truly significant event has been the nominee’s acceptance speech, delivered during prime time on Thursday evening.
But Obama aides have floated the idea of ending the Denver convention on Wednesday, Aug. 27, instead of Thursday, Aug. 28.
The reason is the calendar. This year — unlike in the past, when there was some separation between the two gatherings — the Republican convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul is scheduled to begin four days later, on Monday, Sept. 1. The result, many Democrats believe, could be that Obama would not get the poll number bounce that nominees usually get immediately after being officially anointed.
Can you smell the desperation? They want to cut off 25% of their national convention in a year when the party has struggled to find unity, just so they can get one extra day of bounce between their convention and the start of the RNC’s convention in St. Paul. The dead-cat bounce that Obama generated from the end of the primaries has the Democrats worried about how much more bounce he can generate — and how long he can sustain it — when the Republicans command national attention less than a week later.
This all started with the foolish scheduling of the convention itself. The post-convention bounce is critical for Democrats, although it hasn’t been enough in most cycles. The DNC left itself with a whopping three days to experience it this year, rather than the six weeks it had in 2004. And even if they add a fourth, John McCain can trump it with a VP announcement the day after their convention closes, sucking all of the political oxygen out of the media for Obama.
However, that may only be a secondary consideration. The real bounce has come from Democratic checks that are supposed to fund this Denver shindig. The Democrats haven’t come close to their fundraising numbers for the convention and have begun paring it back already. They have canceled the auxiliary events normally staged at conventions, including two dozen welcoming parties. The DNC abruptly canceled its media walkthrough amid reports that it hadn’t had the funds to finalize its preparations.
Now the DNC wants to cut off a quarter of its convention. It sounds like a desperate way to save money more than a boost for its candidate, and it will come at the expense of the host city, and its venues and hotels. The Democrats believe they can make a play for Colorado, but that will be difficult if they pull a dine-and-dash on its Mile High city.

Guess they’re making sure not to spend any change of their own.

No surprise here.
It’s just representative of what they do to America
ToddonCapeCod on July 3, 2008 at 9:36 AM
The Colorado citizens will take it as a personal affront if the Democrats pull a fast one like this.
Since last year, they have been negotiating rates, deals for meeting and NOW, they want to renege on one day? That’s ridiculous.
Will they renege on their campaign promises too?
originalpechanga on July 3, 2008 at 9:37 AM
I don’t know if it happens in both parties but I remember the first time I heard about a politican skipping out on his bills was John Glenn. It may have even been a 60 Minutes story but it was a long time ago and I am not sure. I could not vote for any candidate that does not pay their bills immediately. I guess some think the “little people” should just be grateful that they were able to serve.

Bounce Obama!
carbon_footprint on July 3, 2008 at 9:39 AM
Desperate? No, I think they know their candidate (and to my surprise) is slowly sinking, slowly fading…don’t put money on a lame horse.
And did I hear Dick Morris correct, that after the convention is is illegal to pay back your primary bills? That you have to rely purely on independent donations? That Hillary is stuck for at least 11 mil?
right2bright on July 3, 2008 at 9:40 AM
Maybe they can save a few bucks by holding the convention on Max Yazgur’s farm.

“Will they renege on their campaign promises too?”
Well, when you promise both sides of an issue it pretty much becomes a given.

I smell desperation.

When I first saw the headline, the concern that came to mind was the ‘re-create 68′ crowd. Who knows what kind of patchuli stinking frenzy that drum circle could generate.
fluffy on July 3, 2008 at 9:48 AM
Since the protesters have already planned to be there through Thursday, this may give them a day and night to hog attention.
Between the HRC supporters and the Re-create ‘68 types, it should be interesting in the streets.
In fact, the way for Denver to strike back against the DNC would be to invite more protesters, issue more permits, etc., in hopes that the increased protest crowds will spend increased money helping to defray the unpaid costs of the Dem convention and of the protesters themselves.

Rising fuel prices – which are largely the democrats’ fault – are cutting into their partying funds. Delicious irony.
whitetop on July 3, 2008 at 9:50 AM
The predominantly liberal Colorado citizens living along the front range between Denver and Boulder with take it as a personal affront. The average citizen living in other areas of the state will have a slightly different perspective.
Lawrence on July 3, 2008 at 9:51 AM
All Obama will need to do is go on TV after the convention and say that the cut in the schedule was an “inartful” scheduling mistake that he was totally unaware of and that he regrets. He will then speak of Hope and Change for a future full of Change and Hope and the media will have a collective orgasm and all will be forgiven and off we will go… No discussion of 5 or 6 dollar per gallon gas, a 10,000 dollar DOW or a seriously weak dollar abroad! Just Change and Hope for a future full of Hope and Change for Change and Hope because the American people deserve Hope and Change and we can do better with Change and Hope…
sabbott on July 3, 2008 at 9:55 AM
Not to worry. Cleverly phrased poll questions will guarantee a trampoline-like bounce for Obambi.
fogw on July 3, 2008 at 9:55 AM
I imagine that, for every Coloradan who feels affronted by such a stunt, there will be another Coloradan who would gladly do anything to get the Dems out of his state a day earlier.
flutejpl on July 3, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Typical of the financial and planning skills of Democrats in general. If they can’t run a convention cleanly, why on Earth would anyone trust them with the country? Do they merely Hope the Change would appear to fund the thing?
michaelo on July 3, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Perhaps Obammy should limit it to one or two days thus making it harder for the Clintoons to steal the deal from the Messiah and by the way where is Bill Clintoon going to be and what will be his role?
dhunter on July 3, 2008 at 9:58 AM
Maybe Denver should show their appreciation for being screwed by the DNC by aiming their supposed Crap Cannon at the convention center just when B.O. is about to give his acceptance speech and blast away.
pilamaye on July 3, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Did anybody see the woman singing the ‘black national anthem’ instead of the real one? They’re pissed!
Tony737 on July 3, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Fundraising shouldn’t be a problem for the donks to pay for the convention. Set up some outdoor BBQ and fried food shops for the suffering conventioneers. Surplus funds guaranteed.

Nah, it’s just teen spirit… and that can be mighty fickle.

I live in Westminster, CO. Where do I sign up to pack their bags?
craig on July 3, 2008 at 10:11 AM
At least that will reduce the CO2 generated from all that hot air by 25%. Besides, isn’t the voting population numb enough already!
Then again, can I get a 25% refund on my grandstand tix? The ones I bought to watch the riots!

Have they tried raising taxes yet? It’s usually the first thing that comes to mind with them….

Maybe they can run a pool guessing who gets to sit next to Jimmy Carter.
onlineanalyst on July 3, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Wow – you mean the Dems are having trouble with a grandiose scheme they planned on using other people’s money to pull off, and are going to leave the mess (and bill) laid on people that don’t really want to have a damn thing to do with it?
Go figure.
Wind Rider on July 3, 2008 at 10:31 AM
This is not the DNC convention I have known in the past.
Alden Pyle on July 3, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Might be good for Denver: 25% less rioting.
Akzed on July 3, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Lemme guess: the ones who are pissed?
Akzed on July 3, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Democrat activists can only pretend to be patriotic for so long. Four days of patriotism would be a real chore for them.
RBMN on July 3, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Could it be that so much money was spent by Hillary & Obama partisans to defeat the other candidate that now nobody is donating to the DNC? Wouldn’t that be a lovely irony.
Rosmerta on July 3, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Who’s “They’re”? –
Dread Pirate
Oh, sorry, the Gov. of CO., the Mayor of Denver, the City Council, etc.
Tony737 on July 3, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Television to stay OFF during both conventions. Nominating conventions make the Olympics look exciting.
pistolero on July 3, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Well, this campaign’s certainly been historically awful, so why not break yet another tradition? I’m not convinced that the entire problem is in the funding. After that Star Spangled “surprise” the other day, they might have decided they risk major embarrassment from their own highly erratic constituency — both inside and outside the hall — so the quicker they can ram the messiah through, declare “unity” and get the heck out of Denver, the better.
Nichevo on July 3, 2008 at 11:16 AM
Three days instead of the usual four.
There’s some CHANGE for ya Denver.
Now you can all HOPE someone pays the bill.
Seriously three days is plenty of Hope, Change, Yes we can.
Rinse repeat ad nauseum.
dhunter on July 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
What a non issue. Nobody watches the first 3 days of the convention anyway. They might as well stick with 4 days of stupidity.
Mojave Mark on July 3, 2008 at 12:04 PM
why not borrow form BHO’s campaign fund to pay for the extra day.. and give him back an IOU… You know, those are just as good as money..
DaveC on July 3, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Stories of the Dem Convention just make me chuckle. What a bunch a marooons.
HawaiiLwyr on July 3, 2008 at 12:59 PM
I think it has more to do with three factors.
1. The Obama campaign and the DNC are not going to get what they want which is a Nuremburg style party rally. I think they fear that the Clinton delegates will walk out or do “something” that might be embarrassing to the Obamamessiah.
2. They do not have the money to pay for the convention.
3. Probably the most important. They can not trust their moonbat nutroots to behave. I can just see them wearing their Che shirts on the convention floor or their moonbat demonstrators, Code Pinkos, anarchists and the rest of the Democratic freak show get loose out of the “free speech cages” and decide to riot and burn downtown Denver.
Nahanni on July 3, 2008 at 1:10 PM
What fun, and all for free!!!
The Democrats teach the country what life would be like under a Democrat administration, starting with Denver, Colorado!!
Promises….broken.
(This is like getting 2-3 GOP commercials paid for by the DNC!!)
landlines on July 3, 2008 at 1:18 PM
The fiscal irresponsibility is stunning. And they want to run the country? Hillary demands Obama pay off her debt? When the DNC promises Denver a boon which ends up a boondoggle? Maybe the smart money guys who made Air America Radio such a stunning success could give the DNC some pointers.
St. Paul/Minneapolis are going to rake in a LOT of money from the Republican convention.
Q: Why did the DNC choose Denver?
A: The Dem 60’s leftovers heard you could get a mile high.
Doug on July 3, 2008 at 1:30 PM
Man, popcorn futures will plummet if the demand drops by 25%…….
Think_b4_speaking on July 3, 2008 at 1:50 PM
It seems as if Obama is getting all the money, not the DNC. That is strange. They can’t even come up with enough funs to pay for their convention and yet we keep hearing how far ahead they are.
Terrye on July 3, 2008 at 3:23 PM
The DNC was Hillary Inc. and Obama is George Soros Inc.
Whose got more funds?
dhunter on July 3, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Again, I will pose the question.
How in the heck are the Democrats going to run this country if they can’t run their DNC without it turning into a disaster? I’m like every problem they have I’m sure they will somehow spin this into yet another “right-wing conspiracy”.
Planet Boulder on July 3, 2008 at 4:18 PM
If Juan McCain paid as much attention to the antics of the DNC as he does LaRaza and his own party, he’d be on this one in an instant. The ads practically write themselves.
Back in the day, Reagan would have been stirring the sh*t by showing up in Denver the week before the convention and commiserating with those who got shortchanged by the Democrats’ bouncing checks.
/sigh
