The $400 million man: Limbaugh locked up through 2016

Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

With fully $100 million guaranteed up front, according to Brian Maloney. And why not? No matter who wins in November, he’ll be on the offensive for the next two terms.

In what is being described as an unprecedented radio contract, Limbaugh will keep his syndicated show on-the-air and e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e through 2016 with CLEAR CHANNEL and PREMIERE RADIO.

Already host of the most lucrative hours since radio’s inception, Limbaugh’s total package is valued north of $400 million, according to media insiders.

The NEW YORK TIMES will claim this weekend that Limbaugh, marking 20 years this summer as a national host, has secured a 9-figure signing bonus for the new deal, newsroom sources tell DRUDGE.

“I’m having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have,” saith a man with 400 million reasons to say so. The monster NYT Sunday magazine profile (replete with sinister black-and-white cover photo, natch) just went live online but I haven’t had a chance to pick through it yet. Let me know in the comments if there’s anything update-worthy. Exit question one: For contract purposes, would reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine qualify as force majeure? Exit question two: Assuming that Limbaugh does better when he has a big target to attack (a safe assumption), would he benefit more from an Obama presidency or a McCain presidency? Most of us would say the former and I guess I would too, but note that (a) either way, he’ll still have a deep blue Congress to wrestle with, and (b) Maverick would present him with a convenient foil for a battle between centrist-style and red-meat conservatism. Whether that battle would do more for ratings than a standard Obama vs. Rush blue/red showdown, I don’t know, but it’s a battle that seems to be coming either way and this would put him out in front of it.

Update: Still skimming the NYT piece, but do not miss the description of his house. Plus this:

In the studio the day we spoke, Limbaugh was more emotional. “I thank God for my addiction,” he told me. “It made me understand my shortcomings.”

Being Limbaugh, he said he believes that most of these shortcomings stemmed from his inability to love himself sufficiently. “I felt everyone who criticized me was right and I was wrong,” he confided. But, he says, he left his insecurities behind in Arizona. “It’s not possible to offend me now,” he said. “I won’t give people the power to do it anymore. My problem was born of immaturity and my childhood desire for acceptance. I learned in drug rehab that this was stunting and unrealistic. I was seeking acceptance from the wrong people.”…

At dinner the night before, Bill O’Reilly’s name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn’t been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. But on second thought, “somebody’s got to say it,” he told me. “The man is Ted Baxter.”

Limbaugh has a deeply conflicted attitude toward Sean Hannity, his one-time stand in and now perpetual No. 2 on the Talkers list. He speaks of the younger man with the same condescending affection that Muhammad Ali once showed Jimmy Ellis, a former sparring partner turned challenger. But he wanted me to remember who is the Greatest. “I have no competitors,” he said. “Hannity isn’t even close to me.”

The truth is, Hannity isn’t close. No one is close to the ability and wit and package that Limbaugh is. I still like them both. The are both wonderful people who do an outstanding job and are vilified by the left. This is wonderful news.

wise_man on July 2, 2008 at 12:24 PM

As people are getitng fed up with everything, they are tuning in more and more to Rush.

They doesn’t usually play around with words, is to the point and says what he means.

Exit question two: Assuming that Limbaugh does better when he has a big target to attack (a safe assumption), would he benefit more from an Obama presidency or a McCain presidency?

I don’t think it matters. I am sure Rush will find some stupid person trying to do stupid crap and give it the one/two effect.

upinak on July 2, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Hands down Limbaugh is the man.

But if I had the choice, I’d listen to Dennis Prager or Michael Medved, or Michael Savage, or maybe Glenn Beck…., no, on second thought strike Beck..

Kini on July 2, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Good.

Most fortunes are used for liberal causes. Nice for Rush, and nice for us. Win win.

JiangxiDad on July 2, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Rush often says it, and I think it’s true: His success doesn’t depend on who wins elections. As long as their are current events, and topical things to say about them, Rush will be around. The question of government’s role in the lives of its people dates back to approximately the establishment of the scrolls of Hammurabi, and that is precisely the red meat that Rush thrives on.

Still skimming the NYT piece, but do not miss the description of his house.

Actually, I was curious in the past. It’s not difficult to find his address and view his house online. I wish I was his neighbor, and not simply because the houses are nice–although his certainly is.

JiangxiDad on July 2, 2008 at 12:33 PM

I think the NY Times is kind of trying to cause a bit of a riff between Rush and Sean. It won’t work. Sean himself knows he owes his carreer to Rush in large part.

The line about O’Reilly was hilarious. I am sure Bill will be offended, but I laughed.

he makes 200,000 every 3 hour show.

not including show prep.

but lets work those numbers:

$66.6k every hour.

$1111.11 every minute.

$18 bucks a second.

$1.80 every tenth of a second, for the next 8 years of radio.

Shit.

triple on July 2, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Ted Baxter! That’s hilarious (and fitting)! Yelling at people doesn’t make for a great show.

Even Hannity knows he isn’t close. Rush is the innovator. Hannity is good, Beck is ok, I never listen to Prager, Medved, Larson, Reagan or Liddy and I would rather paper cut my eye than listen to Michael Savage.

woodman on July 2, 2008 at 12:41 PM

First of all, O’Reilly is worse than a Ted Baxter.

Hannity IS small potatoes in comparison to Limbaugh.

And finally, while I’m not a real Rush fan, I can’t help but feel sympathetic when I watch how much the right sort of people hate him.

Check out the Time magazine cover from back in the early 90s showcased at that NYT Magazine article slideshow. Amazing! Practically Orwellian.

Exit question one: For contract purposes, would reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine qualify as force majeure?

I would think, but don’t know for sure. It is the first thing that popped into my mind.

Exit question two: Assuming that Limbaugh does better when he has a big target to attack (a safe assumption), would he benefit more from an Obama presidency or a McCain presidency?

It doesn’t matter. This is along the same old lines we used to hear about how Rush would never survive once Clinton was out of office. The man has an opinion and people like to listen to him. Who is prez. really doesn’t matter. Like he says when liberals lose power they become nuttier.

infidel2 on July 2, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Exit question one: For contract purposes, would reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine qualify as force majeure?

Dunno about your fancy French-sounding term, but supervening illegality would excuse performance.

But it wouldn’t be illegal. It’s just that the affiliates would stop broadcasting it. He’d still be doing the show.

He’d get his money.

misterpeasea on July 2, 2008 at 12:45 PM

I prefer Mark Levin the other wannabes. He and Rush are the only guys with a sense of humor. Ingraham and Hewitt are OK too, but they kind of wear thin as the show goes on.

With a potential Obama Presidency, he needs a raise to cover the massive tax increases coming his way.

roninacreage on July 2, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Doesn’t matter who becomes president, Rush will outlast them. In 1992, they said he no longer had any influence, and look how he thrived through the Clinton years. In 2000, they said now there’s a Republican in ofice, his audience would dissipate.

They are always wrong. They, of coruse, are the people who don’t listen to him, or are spoonfed out-of-context soundbites from the chumps at Media Matters and their ilk.

As for the Ted Baxter line, it’s perfect. And I agree with others the Hannity stuff is just a means of trying to instigate. Hannity knows what Rush means.

BTW, Zev Chafets is a fair guy and an excellent writer.

JammieWearingFool on July 2, 2008 at 12:52 PM

So for us, it’s Limbaugh, Lewis, and Levin.
The Three L Posse! ( I just made that name up.)

Really nice profile.

Rush is #1. Levin is #2. I ran out of patience with Hannity years ago. Mainly because I’m into principles more than politics.

RushBaby on July 2, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Not a big fan, but he is a money machine, and the left hates him with a passion, which puts him on the top of my list just for that.
And if Obama wins, Rush’s worth will just explode, his ratings will climb, just like they did when Clinton won.
There is no one better at what he does, I just have never really got into him. But then no media guy captures me, they all fall into that “ego” trap.

I got tired of his act many years ago.

I’m not one of those folks who thinks Rush should do more. I just wonder why he doesn’t.

I wonder why he doesn’t buy his own political party a la George Soros, or start his own Conservative Party.

I’m sure he already has a huge email list. Send one email and viola!, a millions-strong Conservative Party. The influence it could exert on the Republicans would be huge. Instant organizations in each state.

The country is there for the taking.

misterpeasea on July 2, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Having listened to Rush since late 2001 (never having followed politics at all prior to 9/11/2001), his main purpose is to get as many people as possible educated, informed and active in politics. Sure, he is in this to make money, who isn’t? Are AllahPundit and Ed Morrissey writing here for free? Doubt it. But, his message has always been to help people get educated to the facts, get informed about politics and to the facts that the mass media and the politicians and the school systems are not telling us and then take that knowledge and get active in making a difference.

I would not want Rush doing anything other than what he is doing. He is a great voice for Conservatism, a great teacher and a great entertainer. I have learned so much from listening to him and have also learned about some great websites (American Thinker, for one) and great political commentators (Victor Davis Hanson, Mark Levin, Andrew McCarthy, to name a few) from listening to his show.

Without having found his show, I probably never would have even gotten interested in politics and would still be an apathetic, ingnorant, self-centered slug, who cared nothing about anything except that in my own little bubble.

Rush made politics interesting and entertaining and he also goes a long way to teach people about conservatism. Some people consider him a partisan hack, but that has not been my take on listening to him since 2001. He is a conservative and knows that the only Party which welcomes conservatism is the Republican Party. Thus, he tends to support them more times than not. But he does not shy away from criticizing the Party and the President when they stray from Conservatism.

I am glad to hear he is locked up for years to come. The nation will definitely need his voice to get out the facts and fight against the mass media, the entertainment industry and the Democrat-controlled government in the years to come. The more people he educates and informs, the more people will we hopefully have active in politics and can stand up against the Leftists in government.

eternal optimism
support and love for entrepreneurs (I own my own company, thanks in part to him)
eternal enemy of liberalism
defender rather than water-carrier of Republicans

RushBaby on July 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM

I can’t believe I left out the optimism. That is probably the #1 thing that has kept me listening to his show. I can only count maybe a few times in the past 6+ years where he has had a show where he has been down. And I can count 100s of times in the past few years where I am just so down about the state of the nation and politics and have waited eagerly for his show to come on at noon, so I could have my spirits lifted by his optimism.

What is great about it is that he is not foolishly optimistic. He is a realist, but also an optimist at heart. I am sure he also has been pessimistic and down about things so many times, but he makes sure to stay positive for our benefit and try to inspire us to be positive and use that positive attitude to get involved and make a difference. He knows that pessimism and negativity and hatred are qualities of the Left that don’t do a darn thing to get things done.

I have always liked his positive message to callers and his encouragement he gives people to keep up their great work. When they attribute it to him, he brushes it off and tells them that they did the work and they should give themselves the credit.

And you are right that calling him a defender of Republicans is more accurate than ‘partisan hack’ or water-carrier. He is accused of that many times, but in my opinion, he is a conservative and ‘enemy of liberalism’, as you said, and knows that the only place conservatism has a welcome home right now is in the Republican Party, its many flaws aside.

support and love for entrepreneurs (I own my own company, thanks in part to him)

Congratulations on this! That is great. And again, I bet if you told that to Rush, he would deny any part in it and say that you deserve all the credit. :)

Because he’s a teacher, a philosopher, and a Philanthropist. Quite the opposite of a politician or a puppetmaster.

Bingo. We need him staying that way too. Although, it would help if we had more statesmen rather than politicians in government. I doubt any of our elected officials nowadays even know what it means to be a statesman.

PPS: As the closest we have nowadays to Ronald Reagan, remember the 11th Commandment regarding allied commentators (or was that just nasty spin by NYT.)

…………………………

For contract purposes, would reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine qualify as force majeure?

Supervening impossibility of performance beyond the control of either party might relieve the parties of contractual obligations. But as a practical matter, dollar to a donut says Rush expressly negotiated this eventuality in advance.

The left could not handle a head on debate with Rush, and they know it.
The left: don’t fear terrorists… fear talk radio, fear FOXnews, fear free speech.

Rush is the Tiger Woods of talk radio, or rather Tiger is the Rush of golf. Both doing what they were born to do.

For what he has done for the country, and for what he has done for getting people’s heads out of their rear ends, he is worth every penny and more.

And what I love is that he drives the intellectuals and smartest-people-in-the-room on all sides crazy because he does what they, in spite of their privileged upbringings, advanced degrees and sophisticated trappings, largely cannot — draw an audience, intimidate his opponents and get things to happen.

There is no one in radio really worth that much. Hugh Hewitt & Dennis Prager - maybe $10 mil a year, max. Rush & Sean - $5 mil a year instead of $50 mil. Pamela Geller - $2-3 mil a year. The rest simply don’t deserve more than a mil a year tops!

If I had a deal like Rush’$ and a right-wing gig like his, I’d take 4 mil a year and give the rest to a foundation so that every wounded soldier got treated with the kindness and respect that soldier has given this country all the way to full recovery.

Maybe you should wait until Limbaugh actually gets the money over the next 8 years and watch his tax records before you blast him on something he hasnt done yet.

wise_man on July 2, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Rush, you deserve every penny and much, much more

Ropera on July 2, 2008 at 3:55 PM

Congratulations, Rush, and thank you. I was raised by Kennedy Democrats for parents, and brainwashed into the whole “liberal” thing when I was in college. Then, when I joined the Air Force and married a career soldier (mixed marriage), then made the mistake of voting for Clinton in ‘92, I started coming to my senses. But back then, Rush, you had your television show and I started watching, then starting listening to your radio show, and now, thanks to you, I saw the light. Thanks for educating me correctly, for your sense of humor, for your common sense, for your undying support of our military and country. You’re the true definition of a “patriot!”

Dude, the market determines what people “deserve.” And Rush has been very generous with his cash and talent. You are way off base.

Dirthead on July 2, 2008 at 3:58 PM

How does one get a name like Dirthead?

BigD on July 2, 2008 at 4:02 PM

Hannity gets on my nerves. He seems to end every sentence with the word “here.” I wish someone would tell him to cut that out. He constantly interrrupts callers. Rush, on the other hand, sometimes lets his liberal callers rant for ages.
Levin is just too rude to his callers. Yes, i know liberals are a pain in the ass, but Levin is over the top. “Get off the phone, you big dope!” has gotten a little old.
For me, the highlight of the day is hearing Rush’s McCain impersonations. They are priceless. “That’s right, Limbaugh…”

infidel65 on July 2, 2008 at 4:05 PM

The Old fashioned way, Big D….I earned it.

Dirthead on July 2, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Maybe you could make out salary totals for the rest of us also. Who the hell are you to say how much someone “deserves” or doesn’t deserve? Obama and McCain both would love to have you as an “Obscene Profits Advisor”.

Big Orange on July 2, 2008 at 4:10 PM

OK, to those b*tching about his pay raise…get over it!
To those saying “not a fan”, you’re in the minority. You probably never listen because if you did you’d be hooked. The man is infectious!
To the rest, thank God we have a voice like his, representing our views in a the desolate tundra that is the MSM.

MechEng5by5 on July 2, 2008 at 4:21 PM

Rush you Da man and worth every cent .You go Rush

thmcbb on July 2, 2008 at 4:53 PM

I had meetings today, so I didn’t get to listen to my local station’s internet stream during most of Rush’s show today, but I did hear him rant a bit about NBC being so off their rockers and threatening to buy them to clean house over there. That was a priceless quip today.

I am a 24/7 member and have been for years. I sent him a congratulatory email. I love great big income for self made success stories, particularly when they had to make their own way to that success. I was very surprised that NY Times article was not a hit piece. It was very informative but it didn’t piss me off, either, so I was very surprised at that. I would have liked to have seen some interior shots of his house, or even an exterior picture. It would be great if they profiled his house in MTV cribs!! haha

karenhasfreedom on July 2, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Couric, Olberman, Matthews, ect IN YOUR FACE!

RobCon on July 2, 2008 at 5:40 PM

What pisses the Libs off is that Rush did it on his own and did not/does not need a government handout…if too many people do that then they won’t need to be beholden to the Libs.

He makes the $ because he produces…his advertisers must see an increase in their bottom line because of his ads or they would not pay, as he calls it, his confiscatory rates. Oops, another Lib sticking point: he produces. Compare that to NPR…that us taxpayers fund.

I think the NYT article is great…I’m amazed.

Dingbat63 on July 2, 2008 at 6:05 PM

I am truly disappointed. I expected a number closer to one billion. Anyway, congrats El Rusbo! You deserve it!!

PS:Public service message for those of you in the drive-by media - If you are so consumed with envy that you are unable to sleep tonight, take a nice leisurly stroll to the nearest and highest bridge. HA! HA!

leisurly leisurely.
My bad.

infidel65 on July 2, 2008 at 4:05 PM

“Thash right, Limbaugh…”

I’m worried about Rush and his impersonations. Sometimes he sounds like his Clinton impersonation when he’s not doing it.

misterpeasea on July 2, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Congratulations to Rush on staying true to himself for almost 20 years on national radio. Even early on (~1990), he was always upfront and honest about his mission — to attract the largest audience and hold it for the longest time (the “confiscatory ad rates” shtick was added later) — and that’s what he’s done.

GoHskrs on July 2, 2008 at 6:33 PM

Hey, HotAirJosef: in fairness, the NYT article did not mention the mega bucks that Rush donates to some of the causes you mention. However, I hope that you will apply the same standards for contributions vs salary to Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, Reid, and other Libs? As has been said: conservatives contribute with their OWN money…Libs use OUR money.

misterpeasea on July 2, 2008 at 6:36 PM

One more thing: if the hot water heater company, the steak company and the mattress company thought they could get the same return on investment advertising on Air America, I’m sure they would! Capitalism!!!

Yeah, his team came to my team’s house last year, and put up 38 points (to our 0) by halftime.

That. Just. Isn’t. Right.

But it’s OK, because I’m sure OhEssYouCowboy is a man, and he’s forty. 8^)
