“I know – I’m sitting here saying, ‘What are these people smoking?’ You know, the truth is that Rush Limbaugh has been – he’s ridden the rise of conservatism for 25 years and I don’t, maybe nobody quite, quite has been following the news, but that’s coming to an end.”

Not come to an end, just hit a GIANT speedbump
muyoso on July 2, 2008 at 10:43 PM
A quote from CNBC, huh. I’d be peeved too if a certain host on today’s radio show threatened to buy my channel now (chump change to him) and have them selling ladies shoes and acne products tomorrow.
Marcus on July 2, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Someone didn’t read the article. Tisk tisk!
lorien1973 on July 2, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Wolff is a moron. No two ways about it.
Is Rush one heluva lucky bastard? No doubt about it. But he has a product. The product is himself, and three hours of his talk broadcast to one of the largest terrestrial radio audiences in the history of the medium.
Wolff’s biases are absolutely naked, and he must be a liberal: seems like failure has been a resume enhancer for him.
gryphon202 on July 2, 2008 at 10:46 PM
It’s true that Conservative Idealism was first enunciated by Reagan. That ends the truth. Rush, like him, love him, hate him, whatever, tells his side with humor and analogy and uses the lefts talking points to prove his point. Often turning their own words against them, as the DNC just did to McCain.
I listen from time to time, not regularly, mainly because I work nights, and he’s on when I sleep. However, I’ll say this for Rush. He has demonstrated a long history of getting the ratings, and has demonstrated an ability to influence people’s opinions.
That’s not a bad thing, and if he can make money doing it, cool with me.
Snake307 on July 2, 2008 at 10:46 PM
#1 If they can use the fairness doctrine after Obama is elected president, I have no doubt in my mind that they can and will bring him off the air.
#2 No, you can’t. You have no idea. None at all. You have no *ing clue as to the reality of his popularity, the truth that he speaks and the other citizens of this country who agree with Limbaugh. You have no clue.
wise_man on July 2, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Hopenchange(TM) can be devastating! And you thought Bush devastated the country. Heh!
lorien1973 on July 2, 2008 at 10:47 PM
To tell the truth I only listen once or twice a month, if that. If Mr Wolfe, however, thinks that conservatives are going to blow away like tumbleweeds on November 5th then I question what the hell he has been smoking.
Limerick on July 2, 2008 at 10:47 PM
Hint to the media just because you are 90% liberal DOES NOT mean the rest of America is.
Conservatism is alive and well in America it just needs a leader. hint Bush was no conservative. In fact he was one of the most liberal spenders in history.

Rush has been coming to an end for 20+ years now.
He really does not know how to end things quickly it would seem. Maybe he should take lessons from Air America, or liberal-non-public-funded hosts on how to end a program faster.

“Wolff” that’s two f’s. The second f is for … well nevermind.

If going DEAF was not enough to take the man off RADIO, or stop him from doing his show, pretty much only Death can – unless he decides to stop the show himself.
Voidseeker on July 2, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Wolff’s an idiot. I never cease to be amazed that people of such lowly intellect can get such good jobs in the mainstream news media.
Priscilla on July 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Conservatism like liberalism can never die. Not even an Obama can change that.
Hope and change just has to keep hoping and changing.
William Amos on July 2, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Oh, dear, friend Wolff. What will you do when the Democrat President and Congressional majority leave you no one to blame for the continued failure of the economy and the government? The only thing that has built your mighty coalition is hatred of Bush and all who bear his party name.
Hate’s a funny thing: once you build it up, you can’t shut it off. And it will always find a target. People have built Obama into a superhuman entity, the personification of change. Nobody can live up to those expectations. The letdown will be crushing, and suddenly the dissenting voices such as Rush, once the hated mouthpiece of the majority, will become much more popular. It’s all cyclical.
joewm315 on July 2, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Since Limbaugh has been outspoken in his criticism of both McCain and Obama, I don’t see how he can lose. Disgruntled conservatives aren’t likely to find a better outlet than Rush, regardless of who takes it in November.

Rush has always stated that he will keep doing this “until everyone in the country agrees with *me*”. heh He ain’t goin’ anywhere anytime soon.
And Conservatism will be alive and well and on the rise again after the country gets a taste of 4 years of Leftist/Marxist/Liberalism from a Democrat controlled government.
Ironically enough, it will probably not be Rush Limbaugh creating more advocates of Conservatism over the next 4 years, but Leftists themselves pushing Leftist government on the nation which will cause more and more people to turn to Conservatism.
And Rush will still be on the air to tell everyone “I told ya so”. heh

From the article:
HA HA HA HA! Wollfy, methinks your last name is Denial! Oh how I wish I could ask him on what facts he bases his brilliant insight upon. EIGHT of the top TEN are conservative. Liberal talk radio has failed miserably. The only thing that he could possibly be thinking is that the ‘Fairness’ doctrine will be passed and free speech on the airwaves (radio only that is) will be muzzled.
Do we have any idea on what he thought about Howard Stern’s $100M deal? Let’s see… $100 million for a sexist potty mouth manchild versus $400 million for a man that stimulates political activity for the better of America?
Let me google this one. :-)

I love Google. If Google was a woman I would stalk her. ;-)
Check out these gems from Wolff back in 2006:
1) “the Internet as media has failed”
2) “I distrust everything about blogs. I’m pretty suspicious of people who are performing this act, too.”
3) “There is a fundamental difference in function here — to blog, to be a blogger, and to write and to be a writer. It takes me a long time to write a sentence. Bloggers are fast, writers are slow.”
Wolff is obviously bitter and clinging to his magazines and religion. ;-)

Perfect example of clueless media elites.
This from the “contributing editor” of a magazine with a circulation of ~1.2 million. Higher than The New Yorker and Marie Claire. Not quite as much as National Geographic Kids and Bon Appetit. 2/3 of the circulation of FamilyFun (what, you morons have never heard of FamilyFun?).

carbon_footprint on July 2, 2008 at 11:30 PM
If the Dems do ram the “fairness doctrine” (such an Orwellian formulation) down the throats of the listening public, I’m buying Apple stock because every dittohead will have to have an I-pod. As one caller suggested a week or so ago, Rush could start podcasting exclusively, charge a nominal subscription fee, and make (20 million times $50) a billion dollars a year. Yeah, they’ll show Rush what’s what. They just can’t get it that he’s a million dollar a year gorilla, and he’ll broadcast wherever and whenever the hell he wants to.

wise_man on July 2, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Clearly, at a $400 mil salary, it isn’t coming to an end.
Rush has been saying, all along, that his success is not based upon who wins elections!
People thought he was done, when Clinton was elected, and then when he was re-elected to a second term.
It wasn’t the case then, and despite Obama or McCain winning, Rush will still be here!
So, put that in your pipe and smoke it!
ToddonCapeCod on July 2, 2008 at 11:47 PM
Ok, this is easy..One the one hand, we have the people that are in charge of *apparently* muti-million dollar corporations offering a proven money maker a huge contract…
And on the other we have Gollum from Lord of the Rings, blathering on about what a HUGE MISTAKE it all is..while he has a ticker tape of the NYSE running under his mug…
BigWyo on July 2, 2008 at 11:48 PM
If Rush is clearing 50 mil a year, I can only imagine what Clear Channel is making off his show in ad revenue.
Conservatism is dying? Yah, sure. 25 million daily listeners would say otherwise.

Glenn Beck I get. I don’t agree with everything but I believe he outlines the independent conservative pretty well. Rush, I just can’t take much. Like O’Reilly sorta. It is too much in-your-face. I’ll take the humble, yet cagey AllahP over BO and RL anyday (Allah send the check to…..Zip 77662)

“RUSH: CNBC, if you keep this up; if you keep putting inane, ignorant people who have no understanding of how media works — if you keep putting them on to discuss me — I am going to buy your network and start doing things right or else shut it down. “
Marcus on July 2, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Limbaugh has already demonstrated staying power beyond who wins this or that election…
The notion that an Obama presidency makes everyone in the nation a liberal disciple is preposterous. If anything, the inevitable disappointment that would follow Obama’s inauguration would lead the exact opposite: good times for Rush and his audience.

Nah, Savage is the man. I love his passion. It’s actually kind of refreshing to hear somebody yell into the microphone every now and again. There’s one thing you have to admit, he puts his money where his mouth is.
I heard Levin basically call him an idiot for suing CAIR, and that his suit was on all the wrong grounds. Maybe so, I’m certainly not an attorney, but at least he’s taking them on.

I won’t google him since I have disowned google this week – the final straw was the censorship of anti-Obama stuff (not to mention the China appeasment and the failure of google to commemorate Memorial Day) – I will use another search engine – I digress. As for Rush – I generally listen to the show on the website at night and if not busy then in my office during the day. I also listen to Hannity, Ingraham, Levin and Dennis Miller. Conservative radio is alive and well…that liberal/Franken channel Air-something can’t exist without stealing $$$ from children…well nuff said. This article is silly in the extreme. Is that the crazy guy who would scream that stuff was ‘unfathomable!!!”? I thought he was funny the time or two I listened if that’s him.
I like JD Hayworth, former Congressman, the local post-Hannity evening drive guy. Pretty even-keeled, but he gets on Governor Jay-No and the Arizona Repugnant often enough to keep me chuckling.
joewm315 on July 3, 2008 at 12:42 AM
Not sure about ‘unfathomable’ but he did get animated. Especially when his Marine son was deployed in Fallujah during the big push there. He put together some great troop rallies here in the DFW area when he was with local radio.

Also, he was happy for Rush & his contract deal, because it PROVES that Americans love talk radio. And that can only be good for all talkers on the (mostley) AM radio.

Does anyone still know of any Rush Rooms open for the lunch crowd to dine and listen at the same time?
Let’s face it, if Obama wins, Rush will inaugurate another ‘America Under Siege’ clock and his ratings will gu up.
If McCain wins, disaffected Republicans will listen and his ratings will go up. It’s win-win. I love Rush.
Vatican Watcher on July 3, 2008 at 1:12 AM
How many of the millions Rush gets will he put towards the troop’s defense? Not to disparage him (I do listen to him & enjoy his program), but MS has donated a fortune (to my standards) personally to Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani’s defense fund. And his listeners have donated (last I heard) 3-400k
Ugly on July 3, 2008 at 1:22 AM
Rush has been raising money for the MCLEF for somewhere around 20 years. He’s on the Board, if I remember key-rectly. He auctioned Harry Reid’s smear letter for $2.1 million, highest charity auction ever on eBay at the time.
And then matched it from his own personal funds.
————-
And I like Savage, too. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says, but I like him on principle. He and Ann Coulter are the closest things to barking moonbats we have on the Right. And that’s unfair to Ann, she’s a lawyer and clerked for a federal judge. They don’t just hand those clerkships out like candy.
misterpeasea on July 3, 2008 at 1:32 AM
I heard Rush today saying that he’s thinking of buying CNBC to hire more intelligent commentators or just to shut it down for the fun of it.

I know, that’s public knowledge. And that’s awesome charity on his part. I applaud that.

Ugly on July 3, 2008 at 1:44 AM
Dunno. Don’t want to guess. But I’ll bet he’s raised more for charity, and given more, than Savage. And I’m not attacking Savage, like I said, I like him.
I’m not sure how personally humble either one of them are. Their radio personalities are just that: radio personalities. Seems to this cog in the machine that you have to have a pretty decent-sized ego to be a radio personality.
So, basically, most of Rush’s lack of humility is showmanship, designed to drive the Left bat-sh!t crazy. And it works.
He also has good reasons to be very proud, and very vain. He has the largest audience in the history of radio. He single-handedly saved AM radio from the ash-heap of history; and he might not have saved it, but he boosted the popularity of talk radio enormously. Every talk radio host, every industry worker, will tell you that. Every talk radio host thanks [deity of your choice] in his prayers each night for Rush Limbaugh.
misterpeasea on July 3, 2008 at 2:05 AM
Oh, and:
Compared to federal court clerkships, they DO, in fact, hand out Ph.D.s like candy. If only because (and it’s not only because) there are a crapload fewer clerkships than Ph.D.-awarding collidges out there.

Yes, Rush is the pioneer and he did save AM radio and I’ve listened since ‘88. He has earned his money and I don’t begrudge him a dime.
But, as far as intellect, and broad knowledge on so many different subjects, Savage is in a league all his own. I think this is why the others ignore him.
And Hannity, I’m sure he’s a “great American” and all, he has done much for the troops, but when I listen to his show, I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

Radio has become profitable because of Rush. Even FM. Radio was in the tank until Rush came along and started challenging on the airwaves.
