“Fox & Friends” using Photoshop to ugly up images of NYT reporters?

Alas, it would appear so. Media Matters has the side by side comparisons, but if you don’t trust them, feel free to compare the source photos of Reddicliffe and Steinberg with these screencaps I pulled from my own recording of the show:

redd.jpg
stein.jpg

The RedLasso version of the clip is embedded below. Their defense here, I assume, will be that the photos were obvious fakes, especially when viewed in the context of the image of Steinberg as Reddicliffe’s dog. Are they obvious, though? The nose they gave Steinberg is … implausible, but Reddicliffe looks sickly, not outlandish. If the point was to goof on them and they felt they simply had to stoop to drawing the computer equivalent of fake mustaches on their photos, they could have just added some text stating that they were photoshops. I don’t know what they were thinking. Exit question: What’s the excuse tomorrow? Some intern was messing around with the images for fun and his doodling somehow accidentally ended up on the show, or is it another “producer error”?

Update: Heh: “Now Media Matters is upset by fauxtography?”

This is evidence of a conspiracy! Bad journalism though, they should admit to it. I hope they don’t make a habit of this.

God Fox news has gone way down hill.

Not good. Not good at all.

It’s a stupid show that I usually wake up to but I’ve always felt they are kinda lame. Almost like they are trying to talk to a bunch of 3rd graders.

Whats the big deal? Fox made them look better. :P

lorien1973 on July 2, 2008 at 8:11 PM

It is pretty funny though, now that I’ve watched it. That nose should have it’s own zip code.

Geronimo on July 2, 2008 at 8:11 PM

And folks wonder why I’m getting rid of cable. I’m so bored with cable news’ ineptness in reporting truly meaningful stories that have a national impact with at least a little actual analysis done. But no, they assume (making an ass of you and me) that we actually care about Hulk Hogan’s son, this or that crane crashing, or Jolie’s kids. This is stuff for local news, tabloids, or People magazine.

The combination of Bill O’Reilly and Shlep Smith make FOX almost unwatchable.

And that’s WITH the largest collection of blondes on cable.

misterpeasea on July 2, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Fox used to act like they respected their audience and believed we had some intelligence. Now I’m getting the distinct impression that the Powers That Be at FNC have bought into the meme that conservatives are all feckless rubes too dumb to wipe our own bottoms if a pastor or Rush Limbaugh doesn’t tell us to. They think we’re dumb enough to either buy these images as real or to think they’re funny. And they’ll also think we’re dumb enough to think they’re telling the truth tomorrow when they claim it was some intern’s “mistake.”

aero on July 2, 2008 at 8:19 PM

I may have to watch them for the first time in a year. That is too funny.

WoosterOh on July 2, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Great. Fox is now employing the tactics of Daily Kos.

Murdoch must be so proud.

MadisonConservative on July 2, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Not at all surprised. The Fox and Friends thing used to be a decent way to catchup in the mornings but over the past several months (years?) the show has become something of a shill for the Republican party.

It seems we have a veritable plethora of shills these days…every on of them standing for a PARTY rather than the country. It just seems to me that we are putting our parties before the country and that’s dangerous and sad.

Wrong

You cant alter a photo of an actual news event, that includes removing things from the photo.

Those photos were not newsworthy photos that were conveying factual news.

Pilgrim on July 2, 2008 at 8:21 PM

If FNC thinks they’re standing for the Republican Party, I sure wish they’d quit it. They’re not doing us any favors at all. They’re making themselves/us look like idiots with stuff like this. We’re the ones who threw a fit over fauxtography last year, and now “our” network is doing it merely to stick a finger in the eye of their competitors? Totally unprofessional and embarrassing.

I used to have to watch FOX for two whole minutes to learn the 3 stories they would loop continuously, now it takes two seconds since they have three pictures on the right side the screen to show you what they plan to loop.
.
If another news channel took middle to right coverage, FOX would be finished.

Bradky on July 2, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Stupid.

Lunkinator on July 2, 2008 at 8:34 PM

I have to agree, this was a stupid move… But as a Fox & Friends fan, I have to give some slight benefit of the doubt, and hope this is the case… Perhaps someone photoshopped the original images, and thought it was obvious when packaged with the dogs picture, and failed to inform the hosts because the photoshopper thought it was obvious (even though I agree, that is questionable). So Kilmeade and Doocy not reacting as if those were photoshops, could easily be because they didn’t know (in fact, that part is more than likely). But perhaps there was less “sinister” motives here, and more of a gag that the hosts weren’t let it in, because the person who came up with the goof didn’t realize it wasn’t obvious.

Again, stupid all around, but I have to leave that slight chance open for the F&F crowd… I await their response, and then I’ll make my final judgment.

triple on July 2, 2008 at 8:45 PM

Maybe I’m wrong, but it just looks like the aspect ratio got screwed up. I’ve seen lots of photos like that in the news lately -its what happens sometimes when you combine normal definition photo/video video with an HD broadcast. Watching live flood coverage a few weeks ago there were all kinds of photos and even video that looked like that when it was “embedded” in a larger digital video stream. During the floods I just chalked it up to local news crews doing everything they could with whatever equipment they had on hand. Fox & Friends shouldn’t have that kind of trouble.

It’s unacceptable when the Leftist media does it. It’s unacceptable when stringer do it in the Middle East. It’s unacceptable when Fox does it. It’s unacceptable period.

I watch “Fox and Friends” every morning getting ready for work, and refuse to bash the Fox News Network as a whole. It’s all I tune into.

But….Brian Kilmeade is forever a sportscaster and Steve Doocy is forever a weatherman. They fail HORRIBLY when it comes to anything else. I breathe a sigh of relief when Bill Hemmer takes over. Obviously the people behind the cameras can be as juvenile as Brian and Steve.

Marcus on July 2, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Well,this is a tad perplexing,

Umm,should I truly give a rats !ss,

When CNN and the rest have photoshopped, and have taken

flattering words in the background!

Again,if we use the Liberal Playbook,it states that some

first two(resign or fired)are met!

The F&F Show was showing pics of people from the 80’s - it has been their theme this week. I was 1/2 asleep as I watched it this AM -

HOWEVAH - I do think that they said the pics were from the 80’s when these men were in previous jobs.

My hairline was several inches lower in the 80’s and my teeth had not seen the magic of modern dentistry as yet either.

you’d wonder if most of the commenters ate at the ‘all you can eat scarcasm and snark buffet’ this evening, or have all come from places like the huffington post and media matters.

Either that, or they are deeply upset that their friends, coworkers and family members were so deeply insulted by the hated faux noise crew.

I mean, seriously, lampooning the goons at the New York Times is a bad thing? Whats next, attacking the journalist credibility of that wonderful and honest reporter, Dan Rather?

wise_man on July 2, 2008 at 9:49 PM

Nope. They yellowed Steinberg’s teeth, too. Had to be a deliberate effort.

Are you sure? Looking at the side-by-side I see what you’re talking about, but I also note the entire picture is darker and the teeth are yellow in both pictures. If I take a picture and display it on all the computer monitors and TVs I have around the house, the colors will look drastically different on just about all of them.

I’m not saying they weren’t deliberately altered, but I’m not convinced they were. Now if someone can do an analysis and tell me the color differences in one part of the picture are different from another, that would be convincing.

edgehead on July 2, 2008 at 10:48 PM

They spend every hour of the day doing this. This is their full time jobs. While you and I have a job we go to, and then come to places like this to read news and comment, these people derive their income from searching for the faintest of specks to take out of context, to blow up out of proportion and the people who go to view their website give them views that are recorded every time someone views them, and they can use this information for advertising or marketing purposes. Eyeballs and clicks.

This along with contributions pays their salaries. For people who see this as a ‘war’ of ideas, or for control of the culture, this isn’t just a passing oddity. These people are participating in a media war that has as it’s existence the dominance of liberal democrat ideals to the goal of the defeat of conservative republican views. Yes, the internet is ’serious business’ for these people. And they want conservative voices to be denigrated. They’d love to see Fox News taken off the air, because they are a threat to them, and the liberal media they are a part of.

AprilOrit on July 2, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Well just think how it would be without cable, dish and internet. You wouldn’t have a thing to bitch about because all you would get is what folks like Dan Rather want you to believe. Think about that mind manipulation and think back to the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and wonder just how we were used by the main stream media.
Yeah, there’s some lame stuff on cable, but they have to fill with something in this 24/7 news cycle. I think we are much better off having Fox News on the air than we are with the rest of the left leaning networks.

(just an opinion)

True, but at least they didn’t make them look this hideous.

This is a fairly common practice-MSNBC for one does it often. Suddenly the folks hanging here at Hot Air are outraged because Fox is doing it? Falling for Media Matters crap and making a big deal over nothing.

Fox used to hold its head high and ignore all of the crap tossed at it from the likes of MSNBC and the NYTimes. Lately they seem to have made the decision to get into the mud and play the same games. They may have a similar political philosophy to mine, but I can’t use that as an excuse to defend their methods. Steve D is the worst as of late. He practically orgasms every time he reports some negative story about the Democrats. He’s hardly fair and balanced anymore. A week or so ago I shifted to a local morning show and turned off Fox. I feel a lot “cleaner” now. If they’re going to behave like Olbermann, O’Reilly, and Hannity, then I’m going to treat them the same way… with the off button on my remote.

Watching Fox and Friends for the first time in a year. Great show.

Thanks for this thread.
