Denver preps for DNC with national anthem snub

The city of Denver has already begun to celebrate the Democratic National Convention, which officially begins less than two months from now. Pre-events have included the Colorful Food Watch and the Festival of Unpaid Bills, and yesterday’s State of the City speech began with Leftist Patriotism on Display. Instead of singing the national anthem as requested, Rene Marie replaced it with a protest song:
Mayor John Hickenlooper’s annual State of the City address may get more attention for what wasn’t included than what was.
At the start of the event Tuesday morning, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.
Instead, she performed the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” which is also known as the “black national anthem.”
When she finished, the audience responded with mild applause. The national anthem was never performed.
Hickenlooper and city officials got caught completely by surprise, as Marie kept her intentions hidden until the actual performance. None of them acted to stop her or lead the crowd in the actual national anthem either, but by the time they would have realized what was happening, it was probably all over. Marie wanted to make a political statement, and succeeded — in setting off a firestorm.
Angry officials and residents lit up talk-radio phone lines in Denver afterwards. Councilman Charlie Brown declared that the US has one national anthem for all Americans, and that the Star Spangled Banner was the appropriate choice for the event. Marie could express herself in any number of venues, Brown noted, but that official city events should feature the actual American national anthem.
In addressing the media, Marie displayed the self-centeredness of people who hijack events for their own aggrandizement. “When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: ‘I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,” she explained. However, the event wasn’t staged to give Marie a platform for her political views; it was an official speech by the Mayor to communicate the status of city government to its citizens.
Unfortunately, Denver had better get used to this kind of It’s all about how I feel as a [blank] thought process over the next two months.
Update: Be sure to read Baldilock’s take on this, which offers a little implicit criticism for me. In my defense, I never asserted that the song itself was Leftist, but rather the ridiculous display yesterday was. Otherwise, she’s dead on point.

Goodie. baldi is human and fallible too!
Be there any doubt, even a shred of it, you are an angel on earth, and I love you unconditionally, platinum and
fleasnarcissism alike. We all have some.I’m extremely happy that we are having the “real” conversation, here, and hopefully nation-wide. I don’t think the Obmas are having them at all.
They are direly needed, as whites and blacks have been hiding from them way too long.
Replacement anthems, of any kind, are not.

Point taken.
aero on July 2, 2008 at 3:22 PM
It was indeed all of those things. And it was also honestly offered advice–if this isn’t you blog and I didn’t call you by name on the topic of the song and its origin/history, it’s not your business whether I address it or not.
You said that I could never offer enough denunciations of this Rene Marie person, which suggest that if I don’t, you would lump me in with her sort even though I said that what she was wrong–simply because I addressed the song’s history.
That’s what I don’t like. But I guess we know now why you were “yelping.” Why you would expect me to be anything other than snotty and rude to you after that is a mystery.
Poor baby! (That’s sarcasm, in case you’re unable to recognize it again.)
baldilocks on July 2, 2008 at 3:23 PM
This seems like another example of some in the black community who seem to be making a conscious effort to not be part of “mainstream America”. And then they wonder (or at least pretend to) why it seems like they are not part of “mainstream America”/falling behind “mainstream America.”

baldi and Jiangxi, two highly intelligent people, ‘kiss and make up’. I can’t stand it any longer, and I adore both of you.
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 3:29 PM
JiangxiDad doesn’t need defending, but I feel compelled to point out that you, baldi, communicated quite poorly (uncharacteristically so) throughout most of this thread. There were many of us who were quite confused about what point(s) you were trying to make, missed your trackback, failed to go out to your blog to read what you said, failed to realize the point you were making was different from what we were originally discussing, etc. Your tone, by your own admission, has been huffy to say the least. Most of us are still quite happy to get your take on this and are sympathetic to the fatigue you described, but this refusal to apologize to just one commenter for mutual misunderstandings seems uncool.
aero on July 2, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Post a list of the topics you control. It would help.
To quote Baldi, you are a liar. Prove it.
When did I fail to recognize it the first time?
JiangxiDad on July 2, 2008 at 3:40 PM

I can’t do this for you. I know that’s going to come off harsh on the screen, but I don’t know how to be gentle in the written realm.
He hasn’t confirmed that I have misunderstood him when he said that I could never denounce this Marie person enough.
And I haven’t been cool since birth.

For all of these folks pissing and moaning about how bad America is: how racist, discriminatory, facist, oppressive, insert appropriate adjective here -
they don’t seem to quick to pack up and head to the workers paradises of Cuba, Venezuela, or other places like China, Russia, or take your pick Middle Eastern nation.
Huh.
What they have never seems to be enough does it?
There is no concept of what they really have. This person does this as a protest against America - not undersanding that had she tried this type of stunt in ANY tyranny across the world, she would be dead.
catmman on July 2, 2008 at 3:50 PM
Why would I do that? I haven’t said or implied that I controlled anything here. However, when I addressed the song’s origin/history and criticized those who were discussing the song without that context, you said:
I told you why and yeah I was snarky because I had–and I’m repeating myself, sorry about that–explicitly said “hit the trackback or my name. Me:
You said in response:
I just did.
baldilocks on July 2, 2008 at 3:53 PM

“You’re not there yet,” is hardly the same as the words you just put in my mouth:
We’ll have to leave it to others to decide who’s playing games here.
That’s what this place is all about after all, credibility.
JiangxiDad on July 2, 2008 at 3:56 PM
Time will tell, Baldi. Over and out.
JiangxiDad on July 2, 2008 at 3:56 PM
Well, if I misunderstood you, how about saying so?
And I don’t need to “play games” with you.

This is a shameful display of childishness. This person and her childlike actions should not be given serious consideration. This is the kind of sophomoric silliness that a freshman city college student would pull and deserves nothing more than to be summarily defenestrated on the grounds of utter uselessness.
Grow up Ms. Marie.
Mr. Mayor, get your house in order and lead properly.
Claypigeon on July 2, 2008 at 4:09 PM
Ugh. I can’t stand it. Baldi, JianxiDad is right! You “weren’t there yet” in denouncing the singer for what she did because you DIDN’T EVER SAY IT OUTRIGHT HERE AT HOTAIR! You arrogantly demanded that we all click through to your blog and read your post there to get that denunciation. Otherwise, you did a whole lotta “coughing” and refusing to repeat what you hadn’t said here at HotAir in the first place!
Now, I could be wrong and you said it and I missed it, just like I missed your initial demand to click the trackback or your name to find out what you thought. But I’m not going back through 300+ comments at this point to “prove it.” Seriously. He never said you “could never denounce her enough.” He said — correctly, as far as I can recall — that you hadn’t reached the point of outright denunciation here at HotAir, which is where this conversation was taking place.
I respect you and like you, baldi, and had nothing but good feelings toward you throughout this thread until the end. Your run-in with JianxiDad really soured my attitude a lot. I had been willing to forgive the requirement to go read your opinion on another site until you used it to unfairly bludgeon a fellow commenter.
aero on July 2, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Our only hope is that while Ms. Marie sings the song during a 4th of July celebration, a bottle rocket flies up her butt.
GoodBoy on July 2, 2008 at 4:37 PM
Who cares what the stupid song lyrics mean or that it’s good or not…??
She could have sung “Green Eggs and Ham” it wouldn’t have made any difference to the fact that she was being disrespectful, narcissistic, nasty, ignorant, unpatriotic, stupid, self indulgent.. etc etc etc
max1 on July 2, 2008 at 4:41 PM
Please don’t yell at me.
If you ask me for an explanation for something I have said here and I explicitly say ‘click the trackback or my name’ and you miss it, how is that my fault?
I have already apologized to you for being snarky about missing that comment and for taking out on you (and others) my frustrations which have nothing to do with you. I meant that.
Jiangxidad and I are arguing about something specific that he said. He could have explained what he meant, but he chose not to and chose to impute bad faith to me. If you can’t see the difference then I don’t know of what further assistance I can be.
I’ve cut, pasted, linked to and repeated that I said “click the trackback or my name” for further explanation. This post makes the fourth time.
Ma’am. I’m not relying on my memory as to the sequence of comments. I cut and pasted the sequence of comments. He could have explained why my interpretation of what he implied was wrong. Instead, he chose to ridicule my interpretation, impute bad faith to it and walk away declaring victory.
Then this is just one of the many things I’ll have to accept. I’ve laid this out for you–not with my memory of the comments, but with the actual comments themselves. That’s all I can do.
Take care.

Rene Marie is a jackass. I’m a musician. If you are hired to play/sing something-play it!
If the bride wants to hear Wagner’s Wedding March for her wedding processional, I don’t play “Farmer in the freakin’ Dell” ’cause I felt like it.
When I order scallops at a restaurant, I don’t want the chef to cook liver and onions for me ’cause he felt like it.
In a word-unprofessional.
Little Boomer on July 2, 2008 at 5:41 PM
You are correct that I’m at this point unwilling to go back through over 400 comments to further fuel this argument. You are wrong, however, that I am ignoring the comments you’ve reposted (multiple times in some cases). I noted that JianxiDad, per your own repostings, didn’t say you could “never denounce her (the singer) enough.” Your reposting shows that he said you hadn’t “gotten there yet.” I agreed with him in terms of the conversation here at HotAir. I can’t repost what you didn’t post here in the first place. It was at your blog that you denounced the singer, not here at HotAir. I had to click out to your blog to find your denunciation — presumably JianxiDad had not clicked out to read your blog post at the point he said you had not sufficiently denounced her action, and perhaps he still hasn’t gone to read your blog, as is his prerogative. Assuming he was having a conversation that was limited to the comments here at HotAir, it was unfair to become annoyed at him for not going elsewhere to read your denunciation. When I badgered you into verifying whether or not you did or did not approve of Ms. Marie’s replacement of the lyrics, you simply linked to your blog. You never actually came out and said, here at HotAir where everyone was reading and pressing you for your opinion, that you disapproved of her action. The most you said was that it wasn’t the time or the place, implying that there IS a time and a place when replacing the lyrics of the national anthem is acceptable. A capella pointed all this out to you as well. We repeatedly stated that we greatly value your opinion and are glad you’re willing to offer it. My feeling of offense stems from what I consider to be an arrogant requirement that we all click through to your blog to see what you think, combined with your refusal to come out and say it here, where we’re having the conversation. Now that Ed’s linked it himself, it lends some legitimacy to the requirement. But when all this started, you seemed irritated as all hell that we didn’t see the trackback or heed your demand to use it.
Again, if my memory fails me and I’m wrong about any of this, I apologize. But I simply refuse to dig through 400+ comments to continue this. It’s not a big deal and not worth the fuss over it. I already apologized for blowing up. As long as you don’t fuss at me for not going to read your opinion at your blog when you could have easily stated your opinion in the comments here at HotAir in the first place, I promise not to react this way again.

Also, if bin Laden got what he wanted by use going to Iraq, Marie got what she wanted, infighting amongst supposed friends.
WoosterOh on July 2, 2008 at 5:49 PM
The irony is that we don’t disagree one iota about how wrong we think the singer is for replacing the lyrics of the national anthem with the words of another song when she was being paid to sing the national anthem at a public event. I also don’t disagree with anything baldi said regarding the song itself or the frustration of watching black symbology being co-opted by extremists.
aero on July 2, 2008 at 5:54 PM
What do you mean?
aero on July 2, 2008 at 5:56 PM
Sorry - I referred to 400+ comments twice, but we’re only up to 350. You get my drift. Too many to dig through for an argument that’s not really an argument. We agree on the fundamentals, and I’m trying to bury the hatchet.
aero on July 2, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Correct. He implied it. He could have explained why what I inferred was incorrect. He chose not to.
I asked folks to “click on the trackback or my name” for the further answer. No one said “I don’t want do that.” They just kept asking.
That’s not how it went. My first comment was a clear answer, but, for what ever reason, that wasn’t good enough.
When others and you kept asking, I felt compelled to compose a post because people here seemed to need more. So I composed the post, sent the trackback, make a comment asking the folks to go there and still get asked “do you think what she did was wrong?” and got snark from Jiangxidad. So I got snarky with all. But I apologized to those who asked (again) in good faith. Jiangxidad was not one of those.
I fulfilled your request and that of others and, ironically, took a little heat for it–and dished some out in turn. :::shrug::: I’m a big girl.
BTW, I didn’t go through the whole comment thread. I used ctrl+F to make it easy to find what I was looking for. Had I been wrong I would have said so.

While she’s in the US I suggest she sing the National Anthem of the United States or not take the job and the pay. What arrogance. If B. Hussein gets into office expect things like this on a daily basis, all over the country.
UnEasyRider on July 2, 2008 at 6:21 PM
I think what ticks me off (and maybe others have stated this) but a long historical song is hi-jacked by some group and claim it is something that it has not been. I don’t think it was meant as a civil-rights song.
The left does that, they will take something and claim it. Like the environment, they think only they are entitled to talk about the environment. Now when this song is sung, people will link it to this gals narcissistic act, and claim it as a “civil rights” song. Tainting this, or better word would be stereotyping this song forever.
There are many examples, they think only the left wants peace, so we have allowed them to steal that word, health care, so much they try and “own” it and re-define it, marriage, etc.
This was a song to be sung on another occasion, or after the proper song was sung.
And baldi is baldi, if most of you don’t know her by now, you haven’t paid much attention. She has no reason to apologize, I got her with her first post.

Texas Gal on July 2, 2008 at 6:49 PM
And, yes, ++undead nails it.
baldilocks on July 2, 2008 at 6:50 PM
doubleplusundead (or you know who), and what baldi wrote, that’s all fine and dandy, if the discussion w/b what the song is all about. I have no issue with the song, its history, meaning, etc.
I stand by my comment and will repeat is a million times, and no, I’m not racist and will not cause anyone any wounds.
The woman (singer) was incredibly impudent and ignorant, with malintent, make no mistake about it. She planned this and got the reaction she deserves. Those who support her are in the same category. It’s just one incident of many to come and anyone who contributes needs to be called on it, I don’t care if they’re white, black or purple in color, or whatever they define themselves by.
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 6:52 PM
No surprise here. You can be both, placable and implacable. I like you both ways, and unconditionally.
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 6:55 PM
I have to reinforce what baldi said. Other than a short burst of hot-under-the-collarness, it actually felt quite civil and respectful to me throughout most of the discussion. It never degenerated to name-calling or poo-slinging. Just a disagreement over communication styles and a touch of stubbornness on both sides. When all is said and done, we all seem to agree about the fundamentals of the issue at hand. The singer was wrong to do what she did, and it is unfortunate and distasteful that she has taken a positive part of black history and twisted it into something ugly and offensive through her little stunt. Ta-da!
aero on July 2, 2008 at 7:01 PM
Yes, and you’re right, the woman herself is reprehensible.
Everyone is missing the point. What Baldilocks is trying to warn people is that they can’t let themselves get into a feeding frenzy and attack the song itself or black culture at large, or allow themselves to be perceived as attacking the song or culture itself. The song has a loooong history, one that goes far beyond the goofy black power/liberation types, and going overboard or out of bounds in criticism plays into the hands of the wrong types of people by creating societal unrest.
doubleplusundead on July 2, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Er, I mean you give those people looking for way cause unrest a means to do it.
doubleplusundead on July 2, 2008 at 7:09 PM
Candy, I get you perfectly, and you know that I didn’t do any of that. Mingling all of this into one thread has muddled the primary issue, the singer’s idiocy and impudence.
I’m hoping some was learned from all this, though I doubt it. I’m actually getting quite afraid, based on this and other things I notice in my travels.
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Of course not. But other people did; else I would not have made a big deal about it.
The only way the issue becomes muddled is by those whose thinking is muddled, that is those who cannot separate criticism of the singer’s decision from criticism of some of the commenters’ statements here.
And you know as well as I do that there are people posting here–and all over the place–who have and will conflate the two issues. Some can’t help it, others do it on purpose.
However, if anything good has come of this thread it’s this: now you all can go back and throw someone’s words back in their face just as quickly and easily as I can. :-P
Technology is great!
baldilocks on July 2, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Believe me, I don’t mind the rough and tumble, and this wasn’t dirty, just contentious. No blood - no foul.
Mostly, I thought the entire thread of comments about the nature of the song was completely off topic. I couldn’t care less what the songwriter thought it was, or how it was used in the 1960s, or frankly what anyone here thinks of it. The only one whose intentions matter are this nitwit that sang it, deceiving the people gathered and the people who hired her to sing the national anthem.
She, apparently, regards it as some sort of racial grievance anthem. Even so, she can go sing it anytime she wants, and that’s just fine with me. But her stunt in Denver puts her on my list of first rate jerks. And I think it will be perfectly proper to hang that stunt around the neck of the Democrats, just because we can.

Hello Entelechy,
I wouldn’t be too worried in what you see as you travel. Not sure if you remember but Roseanne Barr caused quite a stir many years back when she dissed the anthem by grabbing her crotch and spitting - attention getting is all this is really about.
I’d bet even money that in Obama’s inner circle there were positively angry reactions. Less due to some sort of outrage at the singer than the perception it would cause amongst voters he needs from the middle.
Regards,

That’s fair. But that doesn’t make the thread “ugly,” just uninteresting to you–kind of like how the creationist/ID threads are to me. (I’m told that those are ugly too.)
An opinion I disagree with (obviously). It will not be seen this way unless you (rhetorical) are able to couch the criticism in the history of the song which is why I tried to give it.
No argument there and it should be more effective now that a few more people are armed with the knowledge necessary to do that.
See, the ammunition of a propaganda war is knowledge. And if your has more than you do, guess who’s going to have the advantage.

Baldilocks, are you from Cincinnati? I saw a link at your site that indicated you may be. Cincy is my hometown. There are time I wish I’d never left for Cali.

Me too. Oh wait. I grew up here.
Barely missed a broad-daylight shooting yesterday.

Where have you been my e-friend? Where have so many gone?
I disagree with you on the observations on my travels. I’m not referring to airports only and will be more specific during this summer. It’s way more than what Roseanne did.
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 8:29 PM
Sorry, also regards back at you Brad :)

I look forward to hearing more details on your observations. I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus from blogs and the like as well as being pretty busy with work.
talk with you later.

I went to a 95:5 black:white high school. This was back in the mid-to-late 1980’s. That song was sung every February and was always explicitely referred to as “The Black National Anthem”. I never stood up for it, the same way the Jehova’s Witnesses never pledged allegiance to our flag. I never got any mess from it, but some of the teachers were a bit peeved.
I’m just extremely tired of people like this woman continually, on purpose, sepearating themselves from America then complain when they feel seperated. Bizarro.

Where’s TRC? Surely he has something to say about this.
I used to call your neighborhood home. And yes, it can get a little cantancerous out there. Something about it though; I will always have love for LA.

I’m all late and wrong, but I learned something new today. And I think the song is nice from the lyrics (I’ve never heard it myself). However, the singer was being deceitful, and now has tarnished not only herself, but the song she sang.
This is not the America I want my children to know.

And her hairstyle is as retarded as she is.

Did you quote yourself, above? I haven’t had time to read all comments. If you did, it is hilarious. Then you go on about LA and say nothing on topic :)
Entelechy on July 2, 2008 at 10:04 PM
I was actually waiting for TRC or somebody else to call me out on my “only black conservative in the room” comment re: baldilocks earlier. Sorry, TRC - late to the party, I guess.
