CNN to Clark: How come Kerry’s “physical courage” qualified him to be president but McCain’s doesn’t?

Powerline was all over this yesterday; by way of apology for our lateness, I humbly offer the vid. One of the dumbest things about the Clark kerfuffle is that because there are so many elements of military service that people respect, the narrow critique he’s offering against McCain seems almost beside the point. I see service mainly as a testament to character and fortitude; others see it as evidence of good judgment, and others as an important lesson for a C-in-C to have (i.e. “experience”) before committing other men to war. So far as I know, McCain has never staked his own wartime ordeal to any one of these, preferring to let voters draw whatever they find most virtuous from his story. Clark, however, is acting like he has basically staked it to one — namely, “executive experience,” as though McCain’s claiming his beatings from the Vietcong somehow turned him into a strategic genius or, at a minimum, a Romneyesque managerial prodigy.

So here he is on CNN, finally challenged on the fact that Kerry’s military record couldn’t have provided much “executive experience” either yet he still felt obliged to mention it in his 2004 speech at the convention, and what does he do? He dodges it by falling back on those other virtues. First comes the snippet from the speech about Kerry’s “physical courage,” which sounds like the character argument; when Roberts asks him how that amounts to “executive experience,” he shifts to talking about Kerry’s judgment (per his post-war testimony). The “executive experience” nonsense is really just a straw man cooked up to focus attention away from the same appealing attributes in McCain that he was happy to tout in Kerry, garnished with the lie that Kerry wasn’t touting his record in 2004 as evidence of any superior executive qualification to command troops than Bush. Your exit question: If this is all about judgment vis-a-vis Iraq, why bring McCain’s military record into it at all? Why not just stick with, “He voted for the war, the public says it was a mistake, QED”?

Because Clark (and other Democrats) don’t considere the possibility that they will be held accountable for the statements they made yesterday (or last month, or last election…)

I just watched the video, and kept skipping back to try to follow him. I still couldn’t do it.

What a fraud. He’s either incredibly ignorant and brainwashed or a total and utter liar. Either way, I’m ashamed that he reached such a high level in the US Military.

Allah, Clark didn’t and couldn’t vote for the “Wars”. Why the hell his opinion amounts to anything is beyond my reasoning. Clark is a absolute stain on the Military in General. Pun intended!

Simple – run ads one after the other. First about Kerry and then about McCain. One about a young French looking candidate comparing troops to the VC and the second about McCain refusing early release.

DerKrieger on July 2, 2008 at 3:04 PM

CNN’s Roberts gave Gen. Weasely Clark an opportunity to make an Obamaesque comment about having made “inartful” comments regarding McCain. Instead, the 4-star moron chose to dig himself in so deep that even the Obamedia thinks he’s a joke.

Kudos to Roberts for pressing the point.

RE exit question.. Perhaps the Obama camp & the democrats are absorbing the fact that this issue of Iraq is going going gone with your frankly amazing achievements there.

How long will it remain questionable judgement if Iraq is a free country, soon to be a very propsperous one too! McCain wasn’t just all in, he actually DOUBLED down when everyone was prepared to fold. Ouch, that shows a heck of a lot of executive experience, little wes seems to be cognizant of this and attacks the issue to discredit it before it steam rolls out of control and is absorbed by the center swing vote in the USA, who were open minded about the war initially, became disillusioned, and now maybe open minded again with results?

So, because Kerry GOT OUT of the service, he then showed the kind of Executive experience IN THE MILITARY that a C-in-C needs to have?

Got it.

Thanks for clearing that up.

cntrlfrk on July 2, 2008 at 3:12 PM

McCain’s military experience was “…basically…” honorable? Kerry was morally courageous in spreading destructive, anti-American, anti-troops lies to rabid, if not evil, anti-war critics? McCain’s judgement is less reliable, than the judgement of a liar that flip-flopped every day, and then lied to cover the fact that he lied, back during the critical period of the Vietnam War? McCain’s military experience left him ‘culturally insensitive’ to the military culture? Less sensitive, than Obama, who has done nothing to make himself look like anything other than an ardent, racist, anti-American and anti-Semite? Clark is a dumbass, plain-and-simple, and I’m glad I didn’t have that clown as my CG, back when I was in, and I’m even gladder that if I go back, he won’t be my CG, in the future, either.

Lying, dishonorable bastard.

Virus-X on July 2, 2008 at 3:13 PM

This should be a good lesson for McCain. There is a very fine line between his boasting of his bi-partisan relationships and him being gang banged like two dollar hooker. He is naive to the point where he doesn’t realize if he is getting his butt kissed or kicked.

None of the Democrats attacks on McCain’s Vietnam experience make sense if you actually try to parse the words or compare candidates. They are just reminders to certain voters that he wasn’t protesting Vietnam so he couldn’t be anyone they want to vote for.

MamaAJ on July 2, 2008 at 3:20 PM

At the very least, having Clark represent military command competence while at the same time observing General Petraeus in Iraq, must create quite a conflict in our enemies’ minds. On one hand, Clark must put them into a happy dance, while Petraeus makes them frown and mutter.

As for this:

Your exit question: If this is all about judgment vis-a-vis Iraq, why bring McCain’s military record into it at all? Why not just stick with, “He voted for the war, the public says it was a mistake, QED”?

I suspect Clark’s understanding of the internet’s potentail for retrieval is almost as good as that of a certain Alaskan Senator who endeavored to explain the technical aspects to his colleagues on the Senate floor.

It’s funny because Clark so epitomizes politics to me. Here’s a military man who served honorably, you see him speak sometimes and you think “Hey decent guy, seems nice enough”.

But then he’ll say things that are just epically stupid. This dude is a walking gaffe, the GOP should have him spotlighted early and often. He will spout partisan craziness at the drop of a hat.

He is right when he says McCain’s military experience does not reflect these values or judgement. I just wish he could say this more clearly so the nation can see that the Democrats want to elect a loser who will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

What.An.Ass. So now that Iraq is coming out right, it’s AFGHANISTAN that is falling apart…John McCain has poor judgment for not focusing there, yeah, that’s the ticket.

OH HOW I HATE LIBERAL LIARS! You know I used to just say “whatever, they want to steal $ from my paycheck, fine, I don’t care, I have plenty…” but when they started screwing around with the security of our nation, I said ENOUGH.

It’s the lies that really bother me…if they honestly disagreed, fine, we could discuss it, look at the issues rationally, work together, come to a decision how to move forward (how we in the REAL WORLD have to live) but with the lying liberals, they say stuff they KNOW is untrue just to get power, and damn the consequences, right Gen Clark? Geez, he’s such an idiot you think he’d be capabale of doing something stupid like maybe starting WWIII…I don’t think he’s qualified to judge ANYBODY’S judgment, much less John McCain’s.

Yup. Col David Hunt was talking about this yesterday on the Howie Carr show. He served under Clark there. Several thousand Russian troops occupied an airport. Clark called a British Commander with a few hundred troops and ordered him to assault the Russian to expel them from the airport. The British Commander told him he was nuts and hung up on him.

I also learned that Clark was the Officer that released the troops to attack Waco Texas in defiance of the Posse Comitatus Act.

Hunt’s opinion of Clark is that he was smart and brave in battle but a selfish, arrogant Officer that was unliked and untrusted. “It’s always about Wes,” he said. He then went on to discuss 4 outright lies Clark was caught telling when he ran for President.

TheBigOldDog on July 2, 2008 at 4:23 PM

I have a sneaking suspicion that most of the “failures in judgement” happen to be democrats.

Here’s one example:

An Air Force officer pleaded guilty Friday to defacing cars with bumper stickers supporting President Bush, and was given a two-year deferred sentence. Lt. Col. Alexis Fecteau, a decorated officer who flew 500 combat hours in the Gulf War, Kosovo and Bosnia, pleaded guilty to felony mischief and must pay restitution to the owners of the damaged cars to clear his record. Fecteau, 43, of Colorado Springs, did not speak during the hearing nor comment after it. Fecteau is charged with 13 counts of criminal mischief, five of them felonies because the damage to five vehicles was estimated at more than $500 each.

Now, not all democrats in the military are as bad as Fecteau and Clark, but it seems that there are more idiots in the military who are democrats then republicans.

(Looks like my comment wasn’t posted because of an html link or something wrong.. Re-Posted)

I have decided to cast my vote in the primary for Wesley Clark. That’s right, a peacenik is voting for a general. What a country!

I believe that Wesley Clark will end this war. He will make the rich pay their fair share of taxes. He will stand up for the rights of women, African Americans, and the working people of this country.

And he will cream George W. Bush.”

Rest of Lumpy’s wet dream here:

It’s clear now. If you favor cutting and running, you’re qualified to be CIC – even if you’re Paris Hilton. If you don’t favor it, you’re unqualified, no matter your bona fides.

Quick! Someone notify China!

With that great big hole he’s digging for himself every single time he opens up his big fat mouth, Clark should be breaking through into the heart of Beijing any minute now!

In Farenheit 9/11 Michael Moore libeled American troops by portraying them as dumb. Wesley Clark is doing his best to prove MM right.

Clark praised Kerry’s “judgment” for what he did after Vietnam? Slandering the troops and “negotiating” with our enemies when he had no authority to do so (that was Henry Kissinger’s job at the time). If Clark wants to bring the Swift Boat Veterans back out of the woodwork, let him keep talking!

So let’s start some comparisons of what Obama would do with what Kerry did in 1971…this could get real interesting!

How Clark made general is beyond comprehension.

It’s no wonder Gates fired so many incompetent ones.

Too bad Gates wasn’t around before Clark retired.

Clark, not the smartest person in the room.

Even when he’s alone.

That’s how mad his stoopid skillz is.

Clark, if you were worth a damn, you’d still be wearing your uniform. What do you think you are, a retired friggin quaterback or something?

Wesie boy is just too big of an idiot to develop and carry forth a story line.
