Stephen Baldwin: I’m leaving the country if Obama’s the nominee
posted at 2:55 pm on July 1, 2008 by Allahpundit
Via Shawn Wasson, it’s a few days old but salvageable as a mid-day palate cleanser thanks to the currency given it by the rubes at the Observer. How does a newspaper so famously culturally literate miss the fact that this is (a) a joke (b) aimed squarely at one of the most notoriously stupid things ever said by his dopey brother?
Likewise, why does a news network as media literate as Fox persist with these microscopic video players when the also-rans at MSNBC are giving us big, bold, high-rez canvasses? And why does a broadcaster as generally literate as Laura Ingraham not pause to remind herself before bringing on celebrity guests that, per her own instruction, we’re not supposed to care what Hollywood types think about politics? Or is Stephen Baldwin an exception because he doesn’t really qualify as a “celebrity”?

Blowback

Going WHERE, genius?
mojo on July 1, 2008 at 2:57 PM
It was a joke.
doodleduh on July 1, 2008 at 2:58 PM
i saw this when it ran, I was too mesmerized by how good Laura looked to listen to this guy.
bbz123 on July 1, 2008 at 2:59 PM
Love it when people don’t take the time to read/understand things.
Voidseeker on July 1, 2008 at 2:59 PM
He was kidding.
I saw this when it was on.
I was wondering why she was talking to a Baldwin, myself.
Maybe because he agrees with her and their old buddies?
bridgetown on July 1, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Going back to acting school.
Static on July 1, 2008 at 3:00 PM
oops, ‘they’re’
bridgetown on July 1, 2008 at 3:00 PM
I thought Canada bombed the Baldwins?
Mr. Bingley on July 1, 2008 at 3:00 PM
If he makes another movie, I’m leaving the country.
Stephen Baldwin destroyed the SciFi channel with his awful movies.
lorien1973 on July 1, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Bryan weeps.
Limerick on July 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Per the Downey Rule, I can’t rag on a guy who turned his life around. He may not be a B-list, or even C-list celeb, but he seems happy and healthy. Good for him. (Minus 1000 points for Bio-Dome not withstanding).
VolMagic on July 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Notice about 30 seconds into the clip, someone in the crowd is waving the American flag upside down in the B-roll of Obama on stage.
Brat on July 1, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Why must every election we get threatened with losing a Baldwin? That family is a national treasure!
Chuck Schick on July 1, 2008 at 3:03 PM
That’s why we stole Steyn.
VolMagic on July 1, 2008 at 3:03 PM
BTW, AP, shouldn’t that be President instead of nominee? He was no fan of Hillary’s, I believe.
VolMagic on July 1, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Was he being sarcastic?
jencab on July 1, 2008 at 3:04 PM
I saw this on Fox. This guy is a few slices short of a loaf. Nice that he’s voting Republican, but there has to be someone in Hollywood that is and doesn’t come off like and look like a head injury from 10K BC.
Hening on July 1, 2008 at 3:04 PM
Exactly. Left or right I don’t care what their politics are as long as they don’t try to force it on me through their “art” or TV appearances like this one.
Brat on July 1, 2008 at 3:05 PM
I’m still waiting for Alex to leave.
GarandFan on July 1, 2008 at 3:05 PM
I think the difference is that Baldwin is talking about how celebrity endorsements shouldn’t matter rather than trying to get people to agree with his opinion on politics.
But your point is well taken.
Esthier on July 1, 2008 at 3:05 PM
I saw this a few days ago on the Laura show, which I watched for the 3 minutes this was on… He was clearly joking. He even said something like “let’s see the media play with this”, after he made the comment.
Entelechy on July 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM
It was just a silly joke.
Paul-Cincy on July 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Mojo – generally having your fingers means you don’t mean what you are saying…
PatriotPete on July 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Now you’re correcting your own. Although it certainly changes the meaning of the sentence with that one.
Baldwin has also been involved in some Christian organizations, so that could be why as well.
Esthier on July 1, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Clint Eastwood comes to mind.
upinak on July 1, 2008 at 3:08 PM
Forget the Baldwins! I want to know when Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and Barbra Streisand are skipping out of the country if McCain gets elected.
pilamaye on July 1, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I saw it last week and thought it was funny. He was clearly making fun of his brother.
Dubn8tr on July 1, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Wow… if I send some of you nickles, will you promise to buy a frackin’ sense of humor??
psrch on July 1, 2008 at 3:13 PM
Don’t blame Stephen completely, the SciFi channel’s inability to find writers who know any science whatsoever, and their inability to write in coherent sentences didn’t help.
I’m willing to suspend disbelief for a good story, but they violate so many laws of physics per minute that I just couldn’t maintain that state. And the stories are often quite lame as well.
MarkTheGreat on July 1, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Stevie is a Republican?
That must be why he’s not being allowed to make movies any more.
Either that or because he is a terrible f**king actor.
Don’t have any use for his brothers either.
Now, his ex-sister in-law, Kim Basinger, I would have a use for her.
cntrlfrk on July 1, 2008 at 3:15 PM
The SciFi channel seems to go through phases. They either have good movies and lousy series, or they have good series and lousy movies. Right now they have some pretty good series.
MarkTheGreat on July 1, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Daniel Baldwin announced he’s not leaving rehab unless Bob Barr is elected.
JammieWearingFool on July 1, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Yes..he was making fun of his brother. I have to wonder tho..what Alec thought of it? hahaa
becki51758 on July 1, 2008 at 3:19 PM
Actually, there are quite a few Republicans there. Andy Garcia, Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, Angie Harmon….
amerpundit on July 1, 2008 at 3:19 PM
I know it’s a joke, but seriosly, where else would he go. I am very biased towards our great nation and don’t know anything comparible to our freedom.
shick on July 1, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Whole lotta scrapin’ goin’ on.
mymanpotsandpans on July 1, 2008 at 3:25 PM
heh. Glancing at the headline I blinked twice when it read Bobama, not McCain.
Stevie endorses McCain the next President of the United Straights. Cute stumble.
maverick muse on July 1, 2008 at 3:26 PM
As usual for this sort of who-cares item, the question is: how is it that there are always more horsesasses than there are horses?
DigginDeep on July 1, 2008 at 3:27 PM
Oh for fu*’s sake – whenever the nominee is determined for either party, the losers fall in line and throw their support behind them. Apparently this a wild new concept for Mr. Baldwin. Hmmm – speaking of celebrity endorsements, let’s see now – Baldwin was first endorsing Brownback. Then he dropped out and Baldwin went for Huckabee. Then, that horse got mercifully shot behind the shed, so Baldwin went for his 3rd choice and finally got it right – McCain.
That Americans give a sh*t which celebrity endorses which candidate is amazing.
Dave Rywall on July 1, 2008 at 3:28 PM
It’s a shame these hollywood losers don’t understand what it means to live in a democracy..that you’ll live under a leader you don’t agree with.. the strength of our democracy is that in 4 years we can boot him and the COUNTRY LIVES ON.
galtg on July 1, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Threesome was a hilarious movie. He and Lara Flynn Boyle were both so young and… healthy.
Tanya on July 1, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Now I don’t know what to do. This is an unexpected twist.
Nice swipe at his older brother, though.
ej_pez on July 1, 2008 at 3:34 PM
For those that don’t know: His big brother was the one that started the “If Bush gets elected I’m leaving the country” thing.
It was a crack at Alec.

MirCat on July 1, 2008 at 3:35 PM
Our favorite Baldwin. Stephen is down to earth and funny. It’s nice to see Laura is friends with such a nice guy.
wytammic on July 1, 2008 at 3:36 PM
I like this guy. Nothing like a Baldwin that’s actually worth a crap.

Virus-X on July 1, 2008 at 3:38 PM
It was ripping on his stupid older brother Alec? Genius.
I love this guy.
carbon_footprint on July 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM
Saw the interview live last week. Hardly a palate cleanser. He was mocking his brother, a gag that is itself years older than Barak Obama. The young Mr. Baldwin was both self depricating and proud to support McCain. He was good with Laura and they seemed to know the inside joke about this election season (namely that nobody cares). On that he has me beat. I may be a loser and I may vote for McCain, but I’m not proud.
Angry Dumbo on July 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM
It was a joke. It was funny. I like this guy but I cannot bring to mind a single movie he has made.
HawaiiLwyr on July 1, 2008 at 3:42 PM
I vote however Mr. Quaker Oats votes. I said that three times before writing it.
deesine on July 1, 2008 at 3:43 PM
Yup, really enjoy the “I only read the headline” replies.
Voidseeker on July 1, 2008 at 3:44 PM
That was hilarious! Knocking on his own brother’s stupidity? Priceless.
Btw, why is Alec still here again??
hollygolightly on July 1, 2008 at 3:46 PM
The Usual Suspects is his only worthwhile film.
Unless, of course, you count Biodome.
carbon_footprint on July 1, 2008 at 3:46 PM
They’re on cable.
wise_man on July 1, 2008 at 3:47 PM
On cable and very late on weeknights.
carbon_footprint on July 1, 2008 at 3:47 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised if Stephen was a regular reader at Hot Air, maybe even a commenter. Hey Stephen, I was joking about your movies; they are all great!
carbon_footprint on July 1, 2008 at 3:49 PM
What? So they’d be able to see the fingers crossed, the “Media field day with that”, and Laura setting him up for it?

MirCat on July 1, 2008 at 3:53 PM
I really, really don’t give a rat!
newton on July 1, 2008 at 3:58 PM
I used to go to the movies quite a bit, but in the last few years I hardly go anymore. I can spot the liberal gospel in the previews now its so obvious so I just stay away. Also more & more actors are just turning me off, some I associate so strongly with their asinine views I can’t stand to look at them anymore.
To name a few:
Robert Redford
Sean Penn
Tim Robbins
Clint Eastwood (yes for condoning euthanasia in M.D.B. & moral relativism in Mystic River)
Meryl Streep
Susan Sarandon…and many more…
Irenaeus on July 1, 2008 at 3:59 PM
….but he’s one of those “Christianists” so he can’t possibly be intelligent enough to make a joke!
He probably believes in Creationism….he’s obviously not as evolved as his brothers or some around here.
TBinSTL on July 1, 2008 at 4:00 PM
Referencing BioDome is enough to send ANYONE back to rehab, for shame sir!
omnipotent on July 1, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Gosh, shows how much I suck at my pop culture–didn’t even know there WAS a Stephen Baldwin, brother to Alex-I’m-leaving-if-Bush-wins Baldwin.
If he’s reading…sorry ’bout that.
Pretty funny poke at his brother, though–of whom I have (sadly) heard.
Bob's Kid on July 1, 2008 at 4:10 PM
heh…Biodome…greatest movie evah! OK, it wasn’t…
And notice how the Observer in all its journalistic integrity, believing that Steven was going to leave the country, starts off describing him as a born-again Christian, and his lacking of important roles…
I’m tellin’ ya, when the McCain/Obama debates start to roll, McCain is going to bury Barack on the issues. And the left will be looking far worse than the Obsever here.
JetBoy on July 1, 2008 at 4:13 PM
Good point lorien1973 but the SciFi channel destroyed itself with a commercial every six minutes. It is virtually unwatchable anymore.
greasywrench on July 1, 2008 at 4:24 PM
I expect Laura broke her own rule about ignoring Hollyweird types for the humor factor in this statement. Makes the whole schtick out for the joke/haox/buffoonery that such threats are…
Offered Baldwin and Streisand $500 to assist them in their threatened escapes from here when Bush was elected. Neither replied…(sniff)…the pathos of such rejection…
Harry Schell on July 1, 2008 at 4:25 PM
Stephen Baldwin woke up a few years ago. He’s a good guy
Didn’t he play Barney Rubble in a Flintstones movie.
Texyank on July 1, 2008 at 4:34 PM
It’s amusing to go around to different sites and read the liberals up in arms over this quote, completely spewing hatred for Stephen and Laura, completely unaware of what they are talking about.
wise_man on July 1, 2008 at 4:42 PM
Someday I want them to carry through on the threat.
AbaddonsReign on July 1, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Sounds like Stephen is as far right as Alec is left. There must be very interesting conservations at the Thanksgiving dinner table in that family.
orlandocajun on July 1, 2008 at 5:06 PM
And so do I. ;(
redrock on July 1, 2008 at 5:07 PM
I bought premium cable mainly for the SciFi channel. It has gotten so bad that I finally cancelled last month.
Rigel on July 1, 2008 at 5:19 PM
I hope Steven does not resort to wife beating like his brother and “Father of the year“
Wade on July 1, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Another threat from another bad actor, boo hoo.
AprilOrit on July 1, 2008 at 6:15 PM
Stephen is the only one of that brood that is even mildly palatable. And one big difference from Alec is that he’s not on ‘Really Bad Time’ with that frog Bill Maher every other week venting his spleen about his political beliefs.
And you might notice the lack of shrill, angry blathering in this piece. Maybe Alec should take some notes so we don’t have to see Maher try and give him CPR after he blows a valve on one of his ‘I HATE GWB/CHENNY/GOP/AMERICA’ rants…
I’d really HATE to see that happen…
BigWyo on July 1, 2008 at 6:23 PM
I thought he was great in The Usual Suspects. Everybody did good in that movie except of course Spacey whom I now loathe.
Domino on July 1, 2008 at 6:27 PM
He seems articulate to me.
