Kirchick: The only smears are coming from Obama

James Kirchick does not exactly fit the bill as a right-wing ideologue, although he is more of a centrist than his center-left colleagues at The New Republic. That gives his Politico column on political smears in the presidential race significantly more heft than if similar observations were made by a Robert Novak or a Charles Krauthammer. Kirchick disputes the notion that Republicans have engaged in smear tactics against Barack Obama — and points the finger instead at Obama’s campaign and supporters:
Thus far, no one with any serious affiliation to John McCain’s campaign has resorted to the alleged “scare” tactics in which Republicans — and, apparently, only Republicans — have been perfecting since Richard Nixon was first elected. On the contrary, if the past few months have showed us anything, it’s that the Obama campaign is the one dealing in crude smears. …
It’s curious how anyone could argue that a man with such visceral understanding of the capacity for what America’s enemies will do to our men and women in uniform doesn’t fully appreciate the cost of war. But even more troubling is the unmistakable pattern of these smears, all of them unsubtly alleging that McCain is an unhinged, mentally unstable warmonger who would deploy soldiers capriciously because he hasn’t truly experienced the horrors of ground battle. Indeed, the claims of these four men — and the short period of time in which they were all uttered — are so similar in tone that one would be foolish not to at least consider the possibility they were coordinated by the Obama campaign.
Nevertheless, the fears of Obama supporters that their candidate lies eternally vulnerable to GOP smears exists only in their fevered imaginations. The evidence of dirty Republican tricks has been utterly absent this campaign season. And if anyone has tried to smear Barack Obama in the way that Thomas, Wolfe and other Democratic partisans allege, it was not the Republican National Committee, but rather Hillary Rodham Clinton and her surrogates. In February, the Drudge Report claimed that the Clinton campaign circulated photos of Obama in a traditional East African turban and robe, with the message that the images showed him “dressed.” Asked if there was any truth to the smear that Obama is a Muslim, she infamously replied, “As far as I know,” it wasn’t the case. After the Indiana and North Carolina primaries, she said the results showed that “Sen. Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again.”
Kirchick emphasizes the series of attacks and smears on McCain’s military record coming from a range of Democrats, most of which AP and I have extensively documented. He sees this as a coordinated effort to paint McCain as temperamentally unsuited for leadership, somehow without getting Obama’s hands dirty in the process.
Barack Obama is the leader of his party, a point he made himself when he imposed new rules on the DNC for fundraising. A leader who didn’t want to have his party take part in such a smear campaign would act to stop one when it got rolling. Obama’s answer? It’s not a priority for him. That makes it pretty clear where the problem lies and where the smear campaign originates.

Obama. The new Clinton.

Oh Allah, you’ve got it all wrong. The real world is a scary place when you’ve got no spine. Thus, conservative discussion of the real world will always constitute a “scare tactic” for these guys.

Barack can say anything, and make it sound oh so good…and it’s much better if it’s some Weaselly surrogate doing the backtracking…

Obama , The first black Clinton.
Heard that on Rush today. It fits.

soon as you think Obama couldn’t get any worse..
Then he starts spitting on POW’s
(Or actually Obama’s koolaid drinkers were sent to do the job, so that Obama could then throw them under the bus and look like the good guy)
Ohh, what a new kind of politics.

Hey Obama could you land on an Aircraft carrier?
Didn’t think so..
Chakra Hammer on July 1, 2008 at 6:26 PM
Actually, Barack can’t say anything and make it sound good. He is a terrible speaker. He is a passable reader (of a teleprompter) but there is something going on here that isn’t easily visible. Obama is portrayed as a wonderful speaker, but if you’ve heard him, it just isn’t so. It’s a willing suspension of disbelief by those who want to support him so badly.

and what is sad,… is that they think this is pay back, as in swift boating McCain. Which as we know is this version is beyond the in-artful form. Swift boating would be everyone that was in McCain’s command (or the Hanoi Hilton) would be doing the attacks as opposed to the random hacks that they really are…the MSM doesn’t understand that nuance.

If — and I say if — the half of the public that is falling for the Messiah’s act gets wise to his falsity and hypocrisy, McCain will be the first president in history to win all 50 states.
Of course that leaves seven states for Osama Obama….

Bush: Pre-emptive attack on Iraq.

Obama did learn something form the Clintons- attack your opponents for your own sins.

The Inartful Dodger is not having a good week. Still two months to the nomination.
Can he make it? Or will the Dems have to give him the hook and push Hillary back into the limelight?
Dusty on July 1, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Since when has truth telling a smear.
BTW: The pic of Osamabama–he looks mighty dark. Oops, is that racist? Calling a black man dark?
(Hey, I didn’t say darkie.)

Obama’s handlers are smooth. Get the narravtive set before the 4th, that when most of the country will conpletely tune politics out. Underscore the narrative with smears. The solidify them pre and post debate and get a media lackey to try and test McCain. Obama is SLIMEY. McAin came out and denounced the type of nonsense Obama does not have time to address.

How much “heft” can the writings of a 25 year old green pea like James Kirchick have?
The real campaign doesn’t start for a few months…we’ll see who’s taking the low road then.
alphie on July 1, 2008 at 6:41 PM
What else will Obama have but smears by then? He’ll have long run out of principles to sell out on.
Chuck Schick on July 1, 2008 at 6:51 PM
I agree with you. The Dems are taking the low road now.
JiangxiDad on July 1, 2008 at 6:54 PM
At which time the Dems will proclaim “SEE! WE TOLD YOU! Right wing attack machine!!!”.
It’s the same logic Hamas uses- launch rockets and terror attacks until Israel retaliates, then whine about Israeli “aggression”.

Chicago politics! Have they started counting the ballots yet?
Better check those voter registrations close I bet cemeteries all over this great land are full of voters.
Oh yea, no ID’s are required this election.

Saying ANYTHING about Obama is racist!
profitsbeard on July 1, 2008 at 7:14 PM
If the qualifier for a campaign condoning a smear is someone associated with the campaign making a statement, then those Cunningham “BHO” comments should count against McCain if those comments he starts his article off with are fair to attach to Obama. Obama has been very good about rebuking any attacks on McCain’s military service, almost every public appearance he’s made he’s made a point of this. Both rebuke smears and attacks, but apologies are only genuine when they come from John? And if you’re pointing to Obama not being able to control his colleagues, it was McCain who claimed he shouldn’t be held accountable for the coming 527’s, or even the actions of individual state GOP organizations, like with those ads in March.

Time to throw it back in their faces?
gumble on July 1, 2008 at 8:49 PM
the rep party is a bunch of idiots. when will they figth back?
McCain should use the NRA to attack BHO on guns,
should use the fact that BHO did not serve his country, hie refusal to salute the flag etc.
Should use his time away from the US growing up. His father’s writings etc.
BHO is a walking side of a barn. If you just throw something up it will hit the mark.
how about MOSt liberal senator in the senate.
unseen on July 1, 2008 at 9:02 PM
If you really think about it, McCain is playing a smart and clever game. He allows B.O. to send out his minions like Clark and Webb, have them launch personal attacks against McCain and wind up making complete asses out of themselves in the press, leaving B.O. in the uncomfortable position of denouncing what they said and basically tossing them under the bus in the process. If this keeps up, by the time the conventions roll around, B.O. will have everyone who was supporting him piled up under the bus, his public opinion numbers pretty much in the toilet, his chances of getting elected in November sailing out the window, and McCain will have said nary a negative word the entire time.
pilamaye on July 1, 2008 at 9:29 PM
He’s already backing off his faux repudiation of Wesley Clark, saying it was not his (Obama’s) intention to criticize Clark’s comment at all, the speech was written months ago, etc., etc., etc.
Just words.
jeff_from_mpls on July 1, 2008 at 11:18 PM
alphie demonstrates the typical liberal troll brand off defense.
Smear anyone who says anything you don’t like, while ignoring the substance of the comments in question.
MarkTheGreat on July 2, 2008 at 7:46 AM
This whole thing is so transparent…if you stand back and look at the pattern. Many are saying Clark, Beers, et al are “stepping on Obama’s message” of honoring McCain’s military service.
But it’s more calculated than that. Surrogates knock McCain’s military service, ensuring it will become a news topic for several days. Obama’s surrogates slip and slide as to whether Obama supports what they said. BUT the mantra that runs through their appearances is that “McCain’s military service has nothing to do with qualifications to be president”. It’s repeated ad nauseum…with the comfortable knowledge that the MSM eventually picks up a Dem talking point as if it were a fact.
Before long we will begin to see news articles describing McCain’s military service as “controversial”.
Obama’s strategy is to diminish the main criteria that elevates McCain over Obama. Once military experience is diminished, we’re left with two senators. And, before long, the new argument will be that one of those senators (McCain) has been in Washington too long.
It’s a two-sided sword. First diminish the military service then disqualify his Senate service.
Isn’t it obvious?!
jeanneb on July 2, 2008 at 8:20 AM
Obama got to be a US senator without hardly getting his hands dirty. In that race in the dem primary he was, after some technical ballot challenges to his opponents, unopposed, while he ran against a very weak repub candidate in the general, Alan Keyes. Wouldn’t he like to beat McCain the same way, with some rhetoric, sleight of hand, a smile, and a little audacious hope? Now, at times, Obama seems like such a very weak candidate. When confronting an issue, he looks down, hems and haws, duh, uh, uh, and then regurgitates some meaningless pablum which splits the baby in two to show what a fair, honest, and good man he is. I don’t see how anyone can see his schtick as acceptable anymore.
