Audio: Comprehensive immigration reform “will be my top priority yesterday, today, and tomorrow,” says McCain

Top priority overall or just top domestic priority? Iraq and the economy can wait, I guess. The clip comes, via reader Edgar M, from today’s appearance before NALEO, in which he and Obama took turns to see who could pander most cravenly on immigration. Truth be told, there’s little new here: Lip service is duly paid to securing the border despite the questioner’s emphasis on comprehensive reform “and not just enforcement,” and he recycles his old line about illegals being “God’s children too” as a way of insinuating, a la his crony’s notorious remarks about telling “the bigots” to shut up, that one really can’t oppose amnesty and be a minimally decent human being. Par for the course.
It’s nice to know, though, that the very first 100 days of a McCain administration will be consumed with an internecine fight on the right to stop his next round of crap legislation from passing. Can’t wait. If you’re curious to see what Obama said in reply, here’s a recap from Reuters. To the left, of course (minus Mickey Kaus), McCain’s problem is that he isn’t a big enough amnesty shill. Exit quotation from Obama, demonstrating a charming obliviousness to the fact that he himself flip-flopped on nearly every issue he commented on this past week: “If we are going to solve the challenges we face, we can’t vacillate, we can’t shift depending on our politics.”

Not voting for McCain will be my top priority yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Enoxo on June 28, 2008 at 6:20 PM
I see nobody responded to this (big surprise) so here we go again.
Can any of you “who cares about immigration” people explain why you are so indifferent? I know my side has made our case, but your side can never seem to make any arguments in your favor.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:21 PM
flenser:
Like I have said before, this is not a new problem. We had illegals coming into this country when Newt Gingrich did the Contract with America thing. He ignored it. People ignored it for decades. They ignored it in 2000 and 2004. Instead they waited until it was a good political issue to beat people over the head with and then they went crazy with it. Literally.
Most Americans do not want to see mass deportation or an open border either one. They want something that can work. However, there are some people who do not want this issue to be resolved, it is useful to them politically. That is why they had no problem ignoring it for years.
Now they call anyone who disagrees with them open border fanatics or some such nonsense.
Terrye on June 28, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Nice spin. Right out of the liberal playbook.
Answer my question: When did John McCain ever say he would grant citizenship to all the illegals?
JetBoy on June 28, 2008 at 6:22 PM
Mass deportation. Mass deportation. Mass deportation. Blah, blah, blah.
You amnesty shills are so dishonest, it’s sickening. The only people who EVER mention mass deportation are you folks.
misterpeasea on June 28, 2008 at 6:23 PM
As for McCain starting some internecine war or whatever, I think the fact that he got the nomination at all makes it plain that not everyone is as rigid on this subject as the political junkies might be. If they were that damn worried about it, Tancredo would be the nominee.

So your HAPPY with McCain pandering to La Raza, “disenchanted” Hilldog voters, and enviro-wackos, but he SHOULDN’T “pander” to the Republican base he is actually supposed to be responsible to?
You must be smokin the GOOD stuff today…
catmman on June 28, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Dear God, you are the most stupid person I’ve ever enountered online. I did not say that “John McCain has said he would grant American citizenship to every illegal here”.
I said that he has said that he would grant citizenship to thirty odd million “Rosarita’s” as you call them.

What exactly, in the clip in this post, that McCain said has you all so angry?

I sincerely hope you’re right and I’ll be first in line to eat crow if you are, but, as far as back-turning, the conservative base seems not to even be on this man’s radar.

You are so stereotypical. On one hand you act as if anything short of deporting all the illegals is amnesty, and anyone who says different is an amnesty shill. On the other hand you get all whiney whenever someone points out that mass deportation is not a particularly practical or popular solution.
I can talk to you, I can talk to a wall. same difference.
blah blah blah is right. That is what I think anymore everytime I see one of these threads.

Good words for the audience he is speaking to. Welcome to politics.
I do believe his top priority is our military, though I could be wrong.
bridgetown on June 28, 2008 at 6:28 PM
Terrye, Jet
The bottom line here is that flenser wants McCain not to be the President. His reasons are valid to him. He is not going to change sides. The purpose of all the flenser arguments are to pull as many votes away as possible. That’s just the facts. I’m done playing around his rants. He has no intention of doing anything other then create discord.

I think anyone who repeats this lie should be banned.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Well, “30 million” would just about cover everybody, given the numbers. More spin?
Only the McCain-deranged can truly spin thousands of dollars in fines, back taxes, backround checks lasting years, English as requirement, etc as “automatic citizenship”.
JetBoy on June 28, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Well, Just to make AllahPundit happy, I’ll comment, even though there is no need as I have been pounding this drum for years.
McCain NEVER changes his mind about anything. That Shamnesty as an inevitable consequence has FINALLY sunk in to all but the most brain dead McCain supporters. He will use Executive Orders to implement it as best he can in the unlikely event that the Legislative Branch opposes him. That’s just the kind of guy he is.
But a bunch of you are thinking that maybe he really has come around on drilling for some oil?
Yeah, I got a bridge for sale cheap, too.
I just don’t want the President that finally destroys the American economy (and thereby also destroys the nation) to have an R next to his name.
Get used to it. No matter which of these morons you elect, America is going to suffer like never before.
I fear Obama less than I do McCain, because he doesn’t really know how to play the Washington Game. Yeah, he may be a pro at the local Chicago Game, but winning the “Nationals” requires a whole different skill set. He has done no favors, so he is owed no favors. His agenda will be thwarted by his old senate buddies, even those that agree with him, because he hasn’t played the game according to their rules. He is an upstart that pushed his way to the head of the line, while ‘better’ men have been waiting their turn for decades. He is resented.
McCain, on the other hand has made deals with EVERYONE in the Senate and half the House. They all dance to the same tune. Sometimes McCain leads, Sometimes Teddy Kennedy leads, but they both do the dance divinely, and go home together after the band packs up.
We MIGHT recover if it is Obama that wrecks it; Conservatism will be what people turn to when the Demosocialists finally prove that their way doesn’t work. But if a Republican wrecks the economy, we will never recover.
The only hope at all, (other than a direct intervention from God) is to get enough people with some common sense elected to the House and Senate to offset the buffoon that you put into the Presidency.
LegendHasIt on June 28, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Enforcement of the current laws. And:
“But enough immigrants have left that the government of Sonora, the Mexican state bordering Arizona, has complained about how many people have arrived on its doorstep.”
Have any of you folks ever considered how much your arguments about not enforcing the law against illegal immigrants sounds a lot like the liberal argument about legalizing drugs because there are so many criminals in jail for drugs?
misterpeasea on June 28, 2008 at 6:30 PM
This is not good politics. If this was good politics then Obama would be going before the NRA promising guns for all, and going before the Right To Life people and promising to end abortion.

I invited you to put forward your side of the argument in one of my “rants”. I see you are too busy pretending to be high-minded to bother responding. So here we go again.
Can any of you “who cares about immigration” people explain why you are so indifferent? I know my side has made our case, but your side can never seem to make any arguments in your favor.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:36 PM
You either don’t know what you’re talking about, or you’re being (surprise, surprise!) dishonest.
Did you not pay attention to McCain-Kennedy? Because the background checks had to be done in, what, 72 hours? Or they were waived.
Back taxes. Three out of 5 years? Gee, Jet, that’s harsh. Imagine if you had to pay, say, 5 out of the last five years in taxes. That would be some horrible persecution.
Fines. Sure, unless you were “economically disadvantaged,” and then, well, we have this waiver for you.
Learning English. Oh, the horror. And again, it’s a sham. Learn a sentence or two, get passed.
Citizenship? No, amnesty. Lots of these folks have no interest in citizenship. Why give amnesty to non-citizen law-breakers, again? I’ve never gotten amnesty for anything in my life.
misterpeasea on June 28, 2008 at 6:38 PM
No.
It entails enforcing the law so that the jobs and other incentives dry up, after which they leave on their own. That is not “mass deportation”, or any deportation.

Right, Hispanic Americans. They love him. Or at least they did until Jim Sensenbrenner. Know who else they love? Bush. You want to Cubanize (convert these Christian, Hardworking people to Conservatives) or antagonize them?
AYNBLAND on June 28, 2008 at 6:44 PM
I belive what I actually did was to ask you why you thought that mass immigration would not doom all the items you said that you cared about on your list.
As I recall, you did not or could not answer. So was that list not for real?
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:44 PM
I’m up on all of you. Just got back from a Mexican restaurant (oh, the irony!) with tequila samplers and margaritas.
misterpeasea on June 28, 2008 at 6:45 PM
You can accuse me of not knowing what I’m talking about, but I’ve never been dishonest.
McCain/Feingold is a moot point. Dead. Done. She no pass.
You can call it a flip-flop, even tho it isn’t, but McCain’s stance on immigration reform isn’t a carbon copy of McC/Fein. So try again.
3 out of 5 years for taxes. Better than none, right? And yes, I would LOVE to have a couple of tax-free years. But since I was born a citizen, this doesn’t apply to me.
You guys are always saying you’re not for mass deportations. OK…You guys say you have a plan, including employer verifications, etc, but you really don’t solve the problem of 12-20 million illegals HERE now.
You know, if Ronald Reagan could grant “amnesty” and still come out as the great conservative hero…
JetBoy on June 28, 2008 at 6:45 PM
Thay hate him, you idiot. Obama is kicking McCains ass among Hispanics.
They love Bush so much that they voted for Kerry.
The lies are coming thick and fast today.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:46 PM
Interesting, I read that the break-down of pro or anti-amnesty among Hispanics in America (not sure if citizens or not) was split down religious lines. That Catholic Hispanics were pro-amnesty, and Protestants Hispanics were anti-amnesty.
I can’t attest to the truth or method, but I thought it was an interesting observation, considering these things are usually considered along party lines.
Spirit of 1776 on June 28, 2008 at 6:47 PM
Again, either ignorant or dishonest. Hispanic Americans vote Democrat 2-1. They come from a socialist tradition. The right-wing Hispanics are MILITANTLY in favor of some private property.

LOL.
1. “IF”?! BHO won’t solve the challenges. He spreads dope hope.
2. BHO doesn’t face a damn thing other than the teleprompter.
3. “Vacillate” or “shift depending on” implies a fixed position. BHO has no fixed position from which to vacillate, allowing himself off his own hook. Notice he avoided saying “CHANGE” in that context, LOL.
BHO is the ubertard vaseline dream.

The states that address this themselves by enforcement of employee verification are seeing migration. Doesn’t that solve the problem?
Spirit of 1776 on June 28, 2008 at 6:49 PM
Thanks for that. I usually get called a lying liberal moron when I write about McCain.
Obama, despite his beliefs doesn’t worry me much. He is incompetent. HE will ‘go with the flow’ and do what the electorate demands. McCain, on the other hand, doesn’t give a da#^ what any of us thinks and has the skills that it takes to get even UNCONSTITUTIONAL laws passed.

If there is anyone who is still in doubt about what the “maverick” is passionate about, just listen to how he pounded that podium. He made darn sure to hammer home the fact that he will never budge on this issue. Even pointing out (for the umpteenth time) how proud he is to disagree with “those” in his own party when it comes to his precious comprehensive immigration reform.
I have never heard John McCain be this passionate in defending himself from attacks leveled at him by Barack Obama and the Democrats.
He seems to grow fangs whenever he thinks of the word Republican.

You mean McCain-Kennedy. Yeah, it’s dead. I wonder, though, does it tell you anything at all about McCain’s position? And, are you really going to argue that a bill with Kennedy’s name on it is “tough” in any sense of the word? OK, maybe tough on taxpayers.
Is it really your position that law-abiding, tax-paying citizens of the US are held to MORE stringent standards than law-breaking, tax-avoiding, non-citizen criminals? Surely not.
Mass deportation, 12-20 million here now. How many times have I posted that link to the article saying that the Mexican state of Sonora is complaining about the stream of Mexicans coming across the border. Ignorance or dishonesty.
Reagan is a hero in spite of amnesty. He also signed the first no-fault divorce bill into law. He wasn’t perfect, and “Reagan did it” is no excuse to pursue policies that have been PROVEN to fail.
misterpeasea on June 28, 2008 at 6:54 PM
WHy should I believe that?
Apart for the fact that you are a compulsive liar, what you say makes no sense. If they leave a state because of a crackdown, and all the states have the same crackdown, then they’ll leave the country.
In any case, it’s remarkable that you point blank refuse to even try it and see if it works.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 6:55 PM
Oh, please, did we deport those foreigners who were serving in the military and wanted to accelerate their citizenship process?????? No, not only did we have a freakin’ law and made it decades ago, we followed that law and made them citizens. We honored our commitment. So much for the commitment to those who waited in line for years, no doubt extended by many, many years because there was hardly any pressure to increase immigration legally because he addressed it by ignoring the influx of illegal aliens.
I get so sick and tired of these strawman arguments. Obviously, our attitude is to treat all God’s children who aren’t in the good ol’ USA like crap until they sneak across the border. What about all God’s children in Zimbabwe or Burma or any other sh*th*l* that was unfortunate enough to not have a contiguous border with us.
John McCain is the bigot, not me. John McCain is the one with the politically convenient compassion, not me. John McCain’s God is the discretionary one, not mine. And he’ll pass his shamnesty, serve his 4 years and 6 to 10 years later we’ll be right back where we are now, except for a whole lot less respect for the law and a whole lot more animosity.

That’s exactly why so many of us don’t trust McCain or the government on the issue of illegals.
Back in 1986 we had a comprehensive immigration reform. Immediate amnesty and a promise to secure the border. Now, 22 years later, we’re still waiting for the secure border, but McCain wants another amnesty first, secure border, someday…
This time we are demanding secure borders first, only then will we consider what to do with the illegals already here.

These same people fill a thousand comment thread on something as stupid and meaningless as a debate over evolution. They go on and on about how much they fear Obama. I don’t see why they cannot explain why they are so indifferent to filling the country with people who support Obama.
flenser on June 28, 2008 at 7:01 PM
And what is to stop the other states from enforcing laws similarly?
Mexico is ALREADY complaining about the return of thousands of their own that are self-deporting back to Mexico because of the laws being enforced in a few states… And I am pretty sure that you know that, as several people have previously provided you various links and quotes as evidence.
LegendHasIt on June 28, 2008 at 7:01 PM
The office-holders are making a political calculation, but it isn’t that. They want votes, and they are willing to pay for them, just like they’ve been paying for them for decades. Please tell me you don’t believe that legalizing tens of millions of poor, uneducated, unskilled workers will be a fiscal positive for the US.
Jeett! They are going back to their native countries. Believe that.
Employer verification means nothing? Really? How many jobs have you gotten where you DIDN’T have to produce your SSN?
Self-employed. Do they need a business license? A driver license? Credit? Then they’re in trouble. They need no licensure of any kind, no ID of any kind, ever? OK, they’ll slip through the cracks. But it won’t be tens of millions of them.

bridgetown on June 28, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Headline did not NEED to prefix McCain’s statement of “immigration reform will be…” with the headline ‘Comprehensive’–inserted by the editor.
As a matter of fact, immigration policy/policies need attention. Start with Constitutional responsibilities of government employees to obey the law of the land and enforce the LEGISLATED law of the land, fulfill their job requirements instead of ignoring what’s happening because it makes them feel uncomfortable, obey the rule of law and not an activist judge’s opinion or a president’s choice to overlook the law. I distrust the “Reform” first word on McCain’s slogan. IF the processing ACCORDING TO CURRENT LAW needs an overhaul to expedite an application it would require applicants providing complete fingerprints and DNA to verify identity and proof of character. Aha, that will raise invasion of privacy issues; thus, applicants wait years to be processed–no reform. And those who renounce deportation, YOU house the illegal alien on your property and in your neighborhood. Look again at the percentage of illegal aliens in our criminal prisons, for violent crimes committed against American citizens in their homes and in their neighborhoods. There is no room for PC hypocrisy to feign morality. $.02

How would one find McCain/illegal immigrants similar to FDR/Japanese immigrant internment camps?
Is this McCain=FDR based on a willingness to campaign warfare against invasionary forces?

I know I mentioned that the top 50% of the income earners pay 97% of the taxes. So all those millions added to the tax rolls are going to be paying minimal taxes and receiving maximal benefits. Fiscally, it will be a huge net negative.
You people obviously don’t know what a flenser is.

Evan? Don’t know that one. You’re a southerner…that explains a lot. ;-)

I guess then I’ll get a bottle of…both?
Yep!

flenser, you and I agree totally on illegal immigration. I just don’t understand what we expect Obama to do better for us with it?
In my CA a Latino assemblyman is pushing through an act against eVerify, the voluntary verification for employment of government jobs. He’s also in it advocating for the private job givers to do the same.
Private pilot here – I had a family member say once “pilots are just glorified bus drivers”. I handed him the plane one time and refused to take it back for a while. You’ve never seen such wussiness from a grown man in all your life.

Problem. The majority of those who are working the low paying jobs that illegals take, are a net burden to the State.
They won’t pay Income Tax. They don’t make enough money. They will use public resources like schools, roads, need police, firemen, and everything else society helps with.
Legalize them all and they will get Social Security benefits as well… which will bankrupt the system as there is a guarenteed minimum payment after only a few quarters of working. They’ll do those quarters, then move back to Mexico, where they have DUAL citizenship… they’ll vote both there and here.
Or, in other words, they’ll get TWO votes and the BEST economic outcome. They’ll have the benefits of the NAU… we will not.

Clue – great Tex-Mex, with mojitos, but the Cuban style, with white rum…mhhhhhh
Entelechy on June 28, 2008 at 7:20 PM
If you want it in all 50 states, it’ll have to be a Federal law. Too many states realize the economic impact illegals account for. Yes…I’m aware they also take from the government till.
Again…it’s not a cut and dry issue. At least McCain is totally on board with doing something, and not ignoring the issue.
JetBoy on June 28, 2008 at 7:21 PM
We can debate the issues, heatedly even, without the silly barbs.
I’m just sayin’…
We gotta get to 500 junior and we ain’t gonna do it without a few barbs.
Speaking of Barbs…”Honey pour me another whiskey!”

Consider this my contribution.
Will Juan McCain fund Mexico’s “green wall”? Julie (FNC) mentioned the Mexicans will plant trees on their side of the border to protest our proposed fence. They should make it bushes with thorns, that might help.

I should have clarified that eVerify is a system which verifies legal status. Sorry – and I haven’t had any mojitos, yet.

I love that

Not believing a thing either one of these “candidates” say… yesterday, today and tomorrow.
We are SO screwed.

Some cities want to be sanctuaries for illegals – let ‘em – and I’ll choose to live somewhere else. Other jurisdictions are fighting back with local measures, and it’s working. Good on ‘em. If all the illegals would migrate to SanFran and Boston, I’d consider this problem just about solved.
