To be honest I’d guess the real reason he uses ice water (if he really does use ice water) is to help numb his skin. (Since you’d think right as the pain would start coming the cold of the water would make it more difficult for him to feel anything.) Well that and to reduce inflamation. (But it doesn’t sound as cool to say “Well I use ice water because it hurts like crazy and I need something to control the pain while I walk over for a couple shots of wiskey. I tried the wiskey before the dive once but when I was drunk I realized what a stupid idea this was.)

Since the Guinness Record people have, for a long time now, refused to accept new entries for the most life-threatening stunts, we can assume that this is not as dangerous as it might seem at first. Stupid…now that’s a category that Guinness hasn’t addressed.

Well he didn’t quite stop “instanteously”. (Since it took him about a foot to stop so that took some time.) Still I get what you mean. (Usually when they give “g’s” for pilots it’s during a turn for at least a few seconds while he had to endure that for a split second.) Still it does let us see that there was a heck of a lot of force on the guy if only for a moment.

Dave_d, the problem is that people don’t normally describe sudden (ie instant) stops in terms of G forces. G forces are normally sustained forces, which, like the force of gravity felt here on terra firma, is constantly applied.

Gravitation potential energy is (assuming no air resistance and that the change in height doesn’t significantly affect g)
E= MgH

Then we use the formula
W = E = FD

so
FD = MgH
which is
MAD = MgH

BTW D = stopping distance
The M’s cancel which gives us

AD = gH

Which gives

A = gh/d

H = 35 feet D = 1 foot so

A = g 35/1

So A = 35g

I think that’s mostly right.
