New McCain ad: “Purpose”

John McCain clearly recognizes the opening that the high gas prices has provided him in the general election. Team McCain released their second straight ad on energy, this one focusing on McCain’s policy rather than the Barack Obama policies that the “Dr. No” ad criticized.  McCain punches the idea of lowering prices at the pump, without mentioning the contrast of Obama’s remarks that tacitly supported higher prices:

American technology protected the world. We went to the moon, not because it was easy, but because it was hard. John McCain will call America to our next national purpose: Energy Security.

A comprehensive bipartisan plan to:

  • Lower prices at the pump.
  • Reduce dependence on foreign oil through domestic drilling.
  • And champion energy alternatives for better choices and lower costs.

Putting country first.McCain.

JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approve this message.

Effective, if necessarily short on details.  It emphasizes the key goals of most Americans on energy policy, and unlike the Democrats, asserts that we can do all of these things in parallel.  I find it interesting that the ad doesn’t make any mention of the Lexington Project, not even in the graphics.  They should be making that a brand name, akin to the Contract with America of 1994, a catchphrase that will give instant recognition on the issue and a plan that sets the parameters of the debate over energy policy.  The ad, and McCain’s policy (except for cap-and-trade), emphasizes optimism and the can-do spirit that Americans love, as opposed to “Dr. No”.

They need to run this over and over again between now and the convention.  McCain has a wide opening on energy policy, and if properly exploited, will trump Obama’s current edge on economic issues..

Very good ad. This will play very well in places like the Philadelphia suburbs where I live. “Bipartisan plan” is the key phrase there. I think Americans believe there should be a political consensus on energy and will punish Democrats if they continue to try to make this a partisan issue.

I also like the strategy of going out with issue ads while Obama is still running only his gauzy “let me introduce myself” ad. It sends the message that John McCain doesn’t need to introduce himself while the unknown, inexperienced Barack Obama does.

I dunno Ed…I’ve been a staunch supporter of the Mav for a long time now, and so far his ads seemed very effective. I just don’t see this one being so. Didn’t do it for me.

I like this. I think McCain is way smart to accentuate the energy reform platform in this election. He will win on that every time. HOWEVER, he has to stop the whole “oil companies’ obscene profits” thing.

Awesome ad. Here’s why:

1. Obama’s message is “you can’t have cheap gas, you can’t drive anything larger than a Prius, you can’t live in the suburbs, you can’t have your thermostat set to 72 degrees, all because we must conserve energy and stop global warming.” Yes, it’s a “change” message, but it’s a change that’s really antithetical to the American ideal — which is to break through barriers, rather than retreat from them.

2. McCain invokes the space program, which is generally viewed as capturing the “best” of America’s can-do spirit. So McCain is saying – let’s break through the barrier of dependence on unstable foreign oil supplies and let’s get a solution to energy.

I like it. I just wish McCain would have said something about nuclear electrical power in his ad, too.

Correct. I’ve also never understood why cap and trade doesn’t go into the category of “pork”.

Moving on, I predict Barry is going to be outraged by the “putting country first” line.

As for the idea of making the Lexington Project this year’s Contract for America, I think Newt beat him to it with Drill here, drill now, pay less.

Energy Security

That is two words that are winners.
People respond to images, not wordy ideas (ideas support the images).
Energy security, those two words alone set up a winner. McCain is shown to care about energy, and still cares about our security (where is has the edge by far).
Brilliant marketing, this is an effective platform, bumper sticker stuff…too bad the MSM won’t pick it up, if Obama said this, it would be headlines in every paper…Obama promises energy security.
BTW, isn’t Obama’s promise of 35% energy independence by 2025 (?) a little weak…McCain is independence by 2015.
I like the reference to the space program, a little Kennedy thunder, without using the Kennedy name.
This theme is a winner…since the MSM is hell-bent on not reporting the good news in the middle east.

Obama’s current edge on economic issue

B.O.’s “current edge” amounts to a bunch of flowery speeches filled with how he is going to do all the wonderous wonderful things to make life oh so better for everyone under the sun. Of course, none of these speeches happen to explain HOW he intends to accomplish these Herculean feats, but as all know, he is the Messiah, so we should not question things like that.

And if you believe that, Howard Stern will announce he is adopting a strict Puritan lifestyle and moving to Lancaster PA on Monday to join the Amish.

I try and I try and I try to find some redeeming quality of John McCain.

I just don’t like him – and it goes back to the year ‘2000.

My John McCain (up close and personal) story, from the 2000 South Carolina Primary.

Greenville SC – the 2000 Presidential primary – John McCain had just beaten ‘W’ in the NH primary and the “Straight Talk Express” rolled into South Carolina.

I was a McCain supporter – positive that he was the real deal.

I drove to a McCain speech and public appearance. It was a day I will never forget as long as I live.

That day I witnessed John McCain behave unlike any appearance I had ever seen on TV – the man was unhinged.

After a 15 minute canned speech – he decided to address his competition in the primary – George W. Bush. He did so by beginning with, “I am Luke Skywalker, and my opponents are members of the Empire. Together we will form the rebellion and defeat Darth Vadar”. He yelled this – first pumping – his voice full of anger – his face – beet red – and his eyes – well – they were scary.

The crowd instantly went from supportive – to bewildered.

He obviously didn’t pick up on the mood change – because he went on for another 5 minutes – ranting and raving about how everyone was lying about his record – his views – and he, “wasn’t going to take it any more” (remember the movie Network).

It was surreal.

When he finished – and with the prodding of an aid – he left the stage, while we in the crowd just stood there – stunned – and honestly – completely confused.

I asked a woman next to me: “what the hell just happened?” She answered: “that man is freaking nuts!”

I came home – walked in the house – sat on the couch and just looked at the wall. I suddenly realized – the man pushed on television – was not the man at all.

I have told this story many times – to many people – and I have heard the same story told back to me by others who have seen similar John McCain episodes.

I am not given to criticize anyone lightly ladies and gentlemen.

I am sure John McCain is a good man – but listen to me – and please believe me.

JOHN MCCAIN is NOT FIT TO LEAD THIS NATION.

McCain should have an ad that features Obama stating that he is happy with the increase in fuel price but just wished the rise was a little slower. Then McCain should note that this is also the view of the New York Times where Tom Friedman recently argued that there should be a regulation requiring a minimum price of $4.00 per gallon. McCain should then mention that the Obamas don’t practice what they preach since neither Obama drives a Prius. Then mention Bill Ayers!

Exactly, and the answer to that is…
Yes, I am fearful, fearful that nothing will be done. The greatest tragedies in our history was because of inaction, not being decisive. We have not attacked the energy problem, and look where we are now, no man has ever charged up a hill in battle without fear driving him to victory…I didn’t lie in prison for 5 years without fear that my fellow man wouldn’t be there in the morning…it drove me to protect my fellow man; and fear that we will continue down this path of doing nothing but talk drives me to fight for bi-partisan energy security.
Every morning there are people who wake up, (and more come winter), that will say “can I afford to go to work?” “Can I afford to heat my home?” I want to alleviate that fear, and give them security…leaders take on the fear of others and charge up the hill. As leaders we need to make the sacrifice, so others can be secure…end of McCain speech (italics courtesy of BuyDanish)

right2bright – yes, that is very Teddy Roosevelt-ish. TR is McCain’s hero. God knows TR would not sit still while something as important as energy prices spun out of control, nor would his answer be that Americans have to sacrifice and accept a world of limits.

The undercurrent of all of this is the basic idea of American exceptionalism. I believe the vast majority of Americans still believe in it. I know John McCain believes in it. I believe that Barack Obama and his Hyde Park crowd clearly don’t. We really haven’t had a president yet who didn’t. This is what scares me the most about Obama.

Last night on H&C Colmes and Rep. Wexler made the stupid reference to “alternatives like wind and solar” when the conversation was about the high price of gas. I don’t know about those two but I can’t put hot air and wind in the gas tank of my GAS burning car. Nor can 100 MILLION other people. And if you don’t buy in to the GW BS then we don’t need wind and solar. We have plenty of coal. But I do support continued research I just don’t find the need for an alternative to be urgent.

This is a serious and on point ad. Such ads in the political genre try to speak to the public about issues of importance. Then you have Obama recieving a wink and a nod from the networks, with summer and fall reruns of Remember the Titans. Considering the attention paid by most of the electorate during the campaign, who gets better results.

I googled McCain Luke Skywalker January 2000. There are a bunch of references to McCain using that Star Wars analogy to reporters. Time and a few others mention it. But doesn’t include any descriptions of McCain acting especially weird or deranged about it.

You may be right. I have little tolerance for nuts. I may have reacted the same as you. But presumably, reporters saw what you saw, and weren’t as bent out of shape about it.

This ad is WAY better than the ad Wrong Way McCAin has been running in PA, which trumpets his ‘global warming’ credentials and doesn’t even mention gas prices.

If that ad were only a punt insofar as McCain’s chances in PA are concerned, I could live with it. But it is worse than a punt. It bestows legitimacy upon a point of view that is increasingly discredited by scientific research, and that is now obstacle #1 to getting our energy house in order.

So John, what’s with the meaningless multi-trillion dollar tax on our oil and coal energy (ie, almost 90% of it) called “Carbon Credits” that you had another wacky speech about two weeks ago? It’s all now also a “bipartisan” scheme because the two lame shitheads running for President both endorse it wholeheartedly.
Of course, the American people will be stuck with the huge bill.

That scam will jack up our energy costs worse than if the Ghawar field in Saudia Arabia blows up. And the worst thing is: we’re doing it to ourselves! For nothing! And some very unsavory buddies of our politicos will enrich themselves and pay back our corrupt political class with billions peeled off of their roll of trillions. – sort of like Tony and the boys tipping a kid at the Bada-Bing Club.

You are cool, intelligent, but the constant banging on the anti-McCain symbols gives me a head-ache.
Nobody in this race is as bad as you make him out to be. This was a good ad, not meant to resolve all of the issues, but a good ad to move people to his point of view. You don’t have to like someone to honestly evaluate one of his actions.
There was that one guy who hated Fred, constantly ragging on him, Fred’s wife, Fred’s red truck, Fred’s kids, Fred’s history, Fred’s this or that…soon the guy became a joke, when he posted you could almost see the eyes roll, and the eagerness to egg him on or make fun of him. Most of the time he was so consumed with hate, he never saw how much ridicule he was getting, how little people thought of him, how much he embarrassed himself with his hatred (he seldom posts now, he had to move on).
You are so much brighter, and more intelligent then that other poster…don’t become him.

Where’s McCain’s “Let’s build 50 nuclear plants” idea? It should be in the ad. Energy is fungible. We can take energy from nuke plants to manufacture hydrogen for cars, instead of using electricity from coal. That should placate the global warming nuts. Of course it won’t, but it should.

Better than the last ad, but for me:

1. Remove the stupid solar cells. You can coat a whole roof with them for $30,000.00 and not get enough energy to power a toaster – even when the sun is shining brightly. The physics of solar cells says you’re not going to get much better, but even if you COULD double their output, this would be a poor, inefficient, and high-pollution way (remember, these cells have to be manufactured) to generate energy. And by the way, the sun degrades the solar cells – so you’ll be replacing them frequently and you always will be paying 4.5 times as much for electricity as everyone else.

2. Add coal. Get real: coal is our major resource, and it can be converted into gas or oil. We have to use it.

3. Add nuclear. This is the only major way you can significantly reduce industrial demand for gas quickly and reduce heating costs for homes. It’s the safest form of energy production by far, and you can recycle nuclear fuel by repealing the stupid Congressional restrictions which say we can’t, which eliminates the waste problem.

4. Remove the stupid windmills. They consume way too much in natural resources for the puny and unreliable power they produce. Costs are understated, as the advocates fail to count the additional power lines, metering, and replacement costs (It’s just a matter of time until a hurricane, tornado, or major hailstorm wipes out a wind farm).

I’m in the energy business and have seen McCain in action on this.

So true Ed. The ad is short and sweet and makes the point. You could say what McCain said in 10,000, or 100 words, and in this case, 100 is better. If McCain gets the message out about Project Lexington, to the point that the two words “Project Lexington” equate to a 10,000 word discussion, that will help him greatly.

I would suggest that they run this fine ad, but I would challenge them to do a new voice over, incorporating the words “Project Lexington” more than once, and adding a graphic for the web site.

McCain is determined to own this issue (energy,) and I’m thrilled because I knew last year that the issue for this election would not be healthcare, nor Iraq, but in fact energy. He’s 100% on the mark here.

I see this as the only viable situation for driving hydrogen cars that replace our existing fossil fuel vehicles. Building clean burning coal pants is a start in the better direction. Wind, wave(tide) and solar can produce some electricity at current technology, but to realistically account for all of the electricity to charge a battery, or separate hydrogen and oxygen from water, you need a lot of electricity.

I was watching a program on a recent aircraft carrier and they mentioned that for the ship’s nuclear reactor that powers the entire operations(except for the aviation fuel), it will only have to be refueled once in its operational lifetime. If we begin to construct the power plants now, then in the decade or whatever it takes for them to come on line, we will have more electricity for our country. Of course we also need to open the long delayed nuclear waste facility to store the spent fuel, but this is something that needs to be done.

This ad needs more specifics. Mention the 45 nuclear plants–safe, clean, electricity. Mention developing shale oil in the Rockies, which could provide 150 years’ worth of America’s needs.

Another idea for an ad: Right now, when you fill up your tank (show a gas station with high prices), you pay your hard-earned money to this man (show image of a raving Hugo Chavez) and these men (show images of Saudi princes in a palace). John McCain prefers that you spend less money to pay this man (show a worker on an offshore oil rig) and these men (show workers in hard-hats at a refinery) for your oil, right here in America. American oil money for American workers. Yes we can.

This might get the blue-collar crowd on board with drilling here in America–more jobs for them!

Can you imagine a country full of these car bombs? Imagine a downtown parking garage where one of the H-cars springs a leak and takes out half of downtown!! They would make wartime Baghdad look like a safety zone!! Such ill-considered suggestions are why it is always a serious mistake to let politicians pick technology winners and losers.

Water vapor is the BIGGEST GREENHOUSE GAS BY FAR!!! It is over 3000 times as plentiful as CO2 in the atmosphere, and has a direct and provable impact on weather (unlike CO2, where its impact is all unproven theory and speculation).

If the Eco’s are so freaked out by “greenhouse gas,” why are they pushing hydrogen cars, whose exhaust is 100% greenhouse gas?

An easy and time-tested solution:
Climate constantly changes: Successful species adapt to it! So relax and enjoy it!!

That’s the cynic I like.
I do have a problem with McCain saying about Calif. drilling, leave it up to the state to decide (knowing how the state is being led), and then saying don’t let the state decide in Alaska’s case.
These are questions that need to be resolved, asked, and over time they will be. The problem is, if not McCain, then Obama, and that means Obama for 8 years, McCain is 4 years.
