McCain on immigration reform: “I’m glad I did it”

posted at 1:16 pm on June 27, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Via Byron York. We know he’s planning to revisit the issue — the day after he’s inaugurated, no less — but the lack of remorse is news to me. What happened to that “lesson” he supposedly learned about securing the border first?

College betting is obviously an interstate commerce issue

(So Nevada should not have the right to have sports betting?)

The issue has been dead for years

(Despite your efforts, and I thought you were running on effectiveness, so how can it be dead?)

I haven’t won on every issue. I didn’t win on immigration reform, but I’ll go back at it. And I’m glad I did it.

Watch the Meet the Press clip linked up top to remind yourself of how uncomfortable he was, even when he was spouting garbage about having learned his lesson, with saying that he’d veto his crap amnesty bill if it landed on his desk as president. He succeeded in dodging the question entirely with Russert, in fact, but was finally badgered into saying that he’d veto it — almost en passant — at the Reagan Library debate three days later. It comes right at the beginning here, around 35 seconds in. Exit question: Why on earth would he feel compelled to say he’s glad he pushed for a bill that the base hates with a nuclear passion? I understand he has to walk a tightrope between Latino voters and border-enforcement conservatives, but that’s precisely my point: This isn’t how you behave on a tightrope. This is him flipping the bird to amnesty opponents. What gives?

Now, can you explain how the creation of millions of new left wing voters will not do damage to all of the things you just mentioned?

I assume you oppose Obama because of his stance on all those issues. Hispanics love Obama much more than McCain, in spite of McCains frantic attempts to suck up to them. How does Hispanic “immigration” into the US not make Obama style policies inevitable?

flenser on June 27, 2008 at 3:18 PM

I don’t think McCain’s immigration reform would have created millions of new left-wing voters. I think you’re paranoid.

Big S on June 27, 2008 at 3:21 PM

jetboy – many times i have stated my reasons for opposing mccain. i wont repeat them for you. you just keep posting and earning those points! get ya a bumper sticker or something.

of course if you were really interested in a dialogue you’d explain why a conservative would vote for mccain. you’d throw out assurances that mccain would appoint good judges. something more than just his voting record. voting for roberts or alito is a far cry from appointing them. the point george will made about mccain not appointing judges who might throw out his signature legislation is valid and has been made in the past by other pundits.

so pull the teat out of your mouth and explain why we should vote for mccain, explain why a conservative should support him. address the concerns that get repeated on the pages.

if not, take your mccain derangement claim and shove it up your ass.

We’re scroomed. (courtesy of MB4, I believe)

Come on now Limerick. Stubborn people like MB4 and myself are not causes. We are effects. Put the blame where it belongs. Look at the many lies coming out of McCain’s mouth. Look at the insane political stances McCain has taken. Those are the causes.

So, how is the problem fixed?

JetBoy on June 27, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Depends whose problem you’re talking about. For the taxpayers in Phoenix, problem solved.

So some other state inherits the problem, let them do the same thing. Georgia’s problem went to NC. NC can ship it to some other state if they want to, but why not just ship the problem back home.

As I’m sure you know, the northern states in Mexico are already complaining about an influx of their own citizens coming from the US, and the burden it’s placing on their services.

feel free to pay $5.00 for a head of lettuce,

What is with you frickin’ morons and lettuce?

American lettuce farmers are now doing what they should have done to begin with – growing their damm lettuce in Mexico. Why, it’s almost like free market capitalism in action!

Just fyi, but the labor component of the price if lettuce is only a couple of cents. If the cost of farm labor doubled the price of your precious lettuce would hardly budge.

flenser on June 27, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Truly, you don’t see a big difference between Giuliani supporting Manhattan Republicans such as yourself, and other conservatives?

JiangxiDad on June 27, 2008 at 3:16 PM

I see a big difference, in many cases. That doesn’t make me a left-winger or nanny-stater, though. I’m heterodox on a few issues, but they seem to be the ones that have gained the most traction among activists since 2004-2006: immigration, gay marriage, abortion, “Intelligent Design”, and guns. I admit it, I’m a social moderate.

Big S on June 27, 2008 at 3:24 PM

Yes JD…I’ve seen the responses. And like yours, it says nothing about it being successful. The latino student body did not “disappear”, nor did they return to LAtin America. They just went to a neighboring state. Here. So, how is the problem fixed?

JetBoy on June 27, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Because, according to this, Mexico is complaining about all the darn Mexicans streaming across the border.

today rush told a story of a tv man on the street interview where the question was asked whether congress should continue to pay for public radio. the man on the street replied “yes, because if congress doesnt then the taxpayers will have to”

that is how smart these immigrants you want to flood our country w/ are. the USA has changed mightly since the early 20th century when the last great wave of immigration ended. these illiterates who immigrate now, legally or illegally are more of a drain than a boon. they suppress wages for the poor currently in the country. they suck resources like emergency rooms. the supposed benefits that the open borders crowd claims they bring do not outweigh the negatives.

chasdal on June 27, 2008 at 3:28 PM

I’m the “base”…and I totally agree with McCain so far. But some of my fellow conservatives will keep up the “McShamnesty” crud, yet not offer any solution to the problem as they would like to see it done.

JetBoy on June 27, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Solution. Here you go.

1. Secure the border. And I mean secure the border. No virtual BS.
A. Solid wall. Anti vehicle ditch with a two tier section of chain link fence.
B. On top of the wall, motion detection sensors with flood lights and cameras.
C. Using existing automated technology, paintball type guns which shoot tear gas powder pellets
(so if you approach and climb over the first layer of fence guess what you get a face full of?)
(maybe mix a fluorescent paint pellet to make finding the person in the dark easier and safer)
D. Establish patrol command centers from which border agents can monitor a section of the border from safety
E. Fast action patrols from centralized helicopter pads to deal with people that don’t get the message.
F. For the green types, use of solar energy in the SW empty expanses
G. Expand size of legal border crossing points
H. Best of all, $1 per head coming AND going (huge revenue upside on holiday & spring break weekends)
I. Hire a VISA/MasterCard type to establish an National ID checking system
J. Hire a company to handle the visa requests
K.. ENFORCE THE LAW in the US (no exceptions)
1st offense….fine
2nd offense…larger fine and some free advertising (The State of AZ does it to drunk drivers)
3rd offense….massive fine and continued random monitoring (The State of AZ does it bars to spot check the no smoking law)
(fines go it the border maintenance fund…..in perpetuity. This way future politicians can’t raid the fund)
L. Any illegal ALIENS apprehended get deported.

*This is my plan subject to add’l add on features since I did this in less than 10 minutes

I’m tired of hearing of about we can’t do this and we can’t do that. I say BS! If we put a guy on the frakkin moon then we can secure our borders. This makes it safer for our nation, our families and will create new job opportunities for legal residents. This will also decrease the massive amounts of amounts of social services and payments being paid out. “Anchor babies?” Will guess what? The child still retains their citizenship and can stay in the US but if mom/dad leave then the family has to make a choice. Sorry if that sounds harsh but the parents made a decision to break the law and hope we would be candy asses and allow them to stay. What do we do if the media shows a family “being torn apart?” How about running some clips of the degradation of schools, hospitals and the environment due to illegal ALIEN activity. If we have the courage of our convictions to enforce the borders and the law then this problem will sort it self out.

Return home, come through the front door when invited and I will be there with a smile and handshake to greet into this great nation.

Sorry for the long post but sometimes……………

I think you’re ignoring reality.

Latinos favor the most left-wing Presidential candidate in our history by about 65-30, in spite of the fact that the merely liberal candidate is an amnesty shill.

And they come from a socialist tradition. A “right-wing” Latino thinks you should be able to keep some private property for yourself.

Uh… LEGAL immigration is at about 1 MILLION per year. We have allowed about 30 MILLION in the last 30 years LEGALLY.

There are 300 Million folks in America…

Add 30 million LEGAL immigrants, to the 20+MILLION ILLEGAL immigrants, and you now have about 50 MILLION first generation immigrants, or 1 out of every SIX people, or a bit over 16% of the population is NOT AMERICAN BORN.

IF McAmmnesty goes through, they will add not just 20 million, but at LEAST 40 million, once they are able to bring families and the rush for the border when Amnesty is declared… now we’re looking at 40 million low paid workers here long enough to get Social Security, before they go back to Mexico (or wherever…).

Sorry, my family was here before the Revolution. In the past, we were able to keep what we worked for because we were not a Nanny Soc Sec State… but now we are… I’m not willing to morgage my Children’s future to support a bunch of people who are breaking our laws.

I think he meant that he’s glad that he at least tried to solve the immigration problem. Not the politically correct answer, but McCain doesn’t have the subtlety to walk a tightrope on any issue. It’s safe to say he’s never going to master the political art of self-contradiction.

As usual in these threads, I’d like to point out that our immigration policy has been de facto amnesty since the 1950’s. Republicans and Democrats alike have been welcoming illegal immigrants with a wink and a sub-minimum wage job for decades. Inaction is amnesty. Inaction is what we can continue to expect if we can’t find a compromise that secures our border, satisfies the agriculture lobby, and respects the citizen sons, daughters and grandchildren of illegal immigrants.

Bush got 45% of the Hispanic/Latino vote in 2004, which is not a win, but it’s not a blowout either: if one in 20 switched their votes, it would have been a tie. Maybe Mexican and Central American illegals are a little bit to the left of the rest of the country, but given 13 years in the country and a crash course on being an American, you can probably expect them to come to the center like every other group has. In any case, the fact that many members of the major “conservative” party in the USA are loudly claiming that these people are ruining the country is not going to help get them to vote conservative.

Big S on June 27, 2008 at 3:35 PM

terryannonline on June 27, 2008 at 3:32 PM

JiangxiDad on June 27, 2008 at 3:37 PM

terryannonline on June 27, 2008 at 3:32 PM

that is inflated due to the florida cubans. the mexicans streaming across our borders are in no way comparable to those who fled castro and their descendants. also that 40% was based on exit polling, and you remember what the exit polling was predicting about half way through election day in 2004 dont you?

Black voters have supported the Democrats since the Republicans deserted them for segregationist “federalist” Southern voters in the ’60’s, and Johnson took advantage of it. I find it sad that the same kind of alienation could happen again, with Hispanic immigrants, due to the overheated rhetoric of “amnesty” opponents in the Republican party.

What gives??? It’s what I said all along. Rinos know you won’t NOT vote or vote for a Democrat. They expect that as the good little GOPers you’ve always been, you’ll be lend by the nose to all those liberal ideas you detest. You’re gonna get it whether you like it or not.

As for me, I’d like to see us knock down the capitals phone and fax lines everytime they try to pass some piece of crap legislation through regardless of whether the Presidence or the Congress are lead my Democrats or Republicans. Think LA legislative pay raise and run with it!

Oh terryann. Are you an illegal? If not, no one is attacking you. If you are, then you broke the law, and probably more than one. Is it so hard to understand that the non-lawbreakers want to enforce the law?

Most of these issue have nothing to do with one another, despite what the ideologues on either side would like us to believe.

You must be kidding.

Is that the same crystal ball you use to devine with certainty that border and law enforcement just can’t work?

Darksean on June 27, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Black voters have supported the Democrats since the Republicans deserted them for segregationist “federalist” Southern voters in the ’60’s,

wrong. they left in the 30s for the goodies of the new deal…even though the democrats were supporting the klan, segretation, etc.

After the Civil War, newly freed blacks flocked to the GOP because it was the party of Abraham Lincoln, the “Great Emancipator.” Most black Americans belonged to the Republican Party until the 1930s when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt included them in his New Deal programs.

I find it sad that the same kind of alienation could happen again, with Hispanic immigrants, due to the overheated rhetoric of “amnesty” opponents in the Republican party.

Big S on June 27, 2008 at 3:47 PM

newflash: the hispanics will be bought off by the democrats, just like the blacks were.

Can’t we all just get along?

The Left is going to have a field day with conservatives/Republicans arguing with each other.

For every one issue you disagree with re: McCain, there must be 10 issues you can agree with.

Can you say the same for Obama?

Gheese, people…the main thing now is to get McCain in the White House, not Obama. THAT is the only thing that matters between now and November.

For crying out loud…

What you are doing now is just trying to conflate anti-Hispanic racism with anyone who opposes illegal immigration, because you can’t make any decent argument for allowing our borders to be open and to give 20 million breakers of federal law a free pass.

Pathetic.

thirteen28 on June 27, 2008 at 3:55 PM

I hate to have to intrude any reality into your little fantasy, Doctor S, but the fact is that Hispanics are not voting Dem because of any “overheated rhetoric” on the part of republicans. Back when Reagan was givng an amnesty and winning landslide victories in places like New York and california, Hispanics were voting against him by two to one.

When Bush was making amnesty the centerpiece of his domestic policy, Hispanics were voting against him by two to one.

McAmnesty is obsessed with giving amnesty, and he is losing the Hispanic vote to Obama by two to one.

I have more respect for people than to ascribe the childish motives to them which you do.

I wonder if Lincoln would be shocked at the percentage of blacks who vote, vote democrat?

Where do you think the perception of Republicans as racists came from? Surely not the first president from the party, nor the many Republican civil rights activists who worked against segregation through the ’50’s and into the ’60’s. Remember, Eisenhower sent troops to Little Rock. Things started to go downhill when Goldwater opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and were pretty much irretrievable after Nixon embraced the “Southern Strategy” in ‘68.

Neither of those remarks were remotely racist. Both were mocking people on your side for their attitude towards “brown people”.

You cannot run a country based on anecdotes. The facts are that immigrants are bad for the country economically and politically.

flenser on June 27, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Romeo13 on June 27, 2008 at 3:32 PM

I understand that, and you made my point, I was responding to a comment above that said “immigration”, not “illegal immigration” was bad for the country.
Legal, controlled immigration is what has made this country strong and unique.
Uncontrolled will weaken it. It is just important to keep that difference in mind.
He may have meant illegal, I don’t know he never corrected himself, so I suspect that he meant any immigration.
And I suspect you have no problem with limited legal immigration, that puts certain standards on the immigrants. Most of us have no problem with that.
If you commented to disagree, you are commenting to the wrong person.

just shows how much the liberal media can imbed an idea in someone’s mind. the civil rights laws in the 60’s passed because repubs voted for them in higher percentages than dems. remember who filibustered to try and kill them? a hint, he had a son who is trying to save the world from global warming or manbearpig, not sure which is more of a threat. we southerners started voting republican when the south started growing economically and we saw the republicans had those interests at heart. we stopped being dems when they lost all moral values and started believing if it feels good do it. but the media pounds home the idea that the south went republican because we hate blacks. and you believe. cant blame ya much since its all a person ever hears from the press.

chasdal on June 27, 2008 at 4:04 PM

terryannonline on June 27, 2008 at 3:57 PM

You have utterly misunderstood those references. The commenters were making fun of liberal tendencies to be the saviors of those they deem as needy, and who can’t think for themselves so the whites have to save them.

It was a knock on white liberals, and McCain’s or other amnesty proponents desire to be seen as compassionate do-gooders.

The other comment about mowing the lawn was also a dig at white liberals who want amnesty just so they can have an underclass to do their manual labor.

In neither case was this a comment about the illegal immigrants.

chasdal on June 27, 2008 at 4:06 PM

McCain is worse than “fundamentally flawed” in the political sense. There has always been something very wrong with his character, which is one of extreme “me-first-and-only” self-entitlement. He was wrongfully admitted to the Naval Academy with bad grades ahead of more qualified applicants because his daddy and granddaddy were admirals. Rules that apply to ordinary people don’t apply to him. He thumbed his nose at Annapolis because he couldn’t be kicked out or flunked out, because he was JOHN MCCAIN, son and grandson of ADMIRALS. He ignored orders and crashed planes, because he couldn’t be disciplined as the son and grandson of admirals. He ditched the wife who stood by him, when he wanted a rich blonde chick young enough to be his daughter, who could finance his political ambition. He was caught taking bribes to his wife from the Keating 5, so tried to cover his tracks by imposing the McCain-Feingold nonsense on everyone else (laws only apply to everyone else, not JOHN MCCAIN). He entertained a blonde lobbyist in ways that worried his staff, and improperly pressured the FCC for her in exchange for …., because he is JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!!. He yells obscenities at other senators who questioned ramming his McCain-Kennedy amnesty through the Senate in the dead of night without debate, and screams he knows more about it than anyone else – because he is JOHN MCCAIN, a legend in his own mind !!!!!! He has secret “no press allowed meetings to praise Mexico as our dearest friend and closest neighbor, calling enforcement of the laws “Rhetoric”. As president, McCain try to rule by fiat and would make Hugo Chavez look like George Washington. Like the Alice in Wonderland Queen of Hearts, if any GOP congress critter disagreed with him as president -> “OFF WITH HIS HEAD- I’m JOHN MCCAIN, KING OF THE UNIVERSE”. There has always been something consistently very wrong with McCain’s character. Through it all, this lying unreliable self-aggrandizing megalomaniac poses as a “straight talker”, and is so sick, he probably believes it himself, because he is JOHN MCCAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!, son and grandson of ADMIRALS.

I understand that many Republicans supported the Civil Rights legislation, but the two I mentioned (Goldwater and Nixon) were the Presidential nominees of the party.
