Video: Palinmania! Update: Supporters of drilling are “blowing smoke,” says Ahnuld

posted at 5:00 pm on June 26, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Eight minutes on ANWR, taxing “windfalls,” and her VP prospects from last night’s “Kudlow & Company.” Nothing surprising here in light of her recent letter to Reid, but it’s the first chance I’ve had to see her talking politics in an extended segment and so I figured it’s probably yours, too. Is that what an Alaskan accent sounds like? Not quite Canadian, not quite North Dakotan.

Most precious moment: Kudlow and Palin agreeing that the solution to the energy crisis is deregulating oil companies. Good luck with that in this political climate, kids.

Update: Palin as Linda Hamilton:

Departing from prepared remarks, he indirectly criticized Crist’s announcement last week in support of oil drilling off Florida’s coast.

“America is so addicted to oil that it will take years to ween ourselves from it,” Schwarzenegger said. “To look for new ways to feed our addiction is not the answer.”

“Anyone who tells you this would bring down gas prices anytime soon is blowing smoke,” he added.

Update: Via Hotline, congressional “insiders” rate their support for various energy measures on scales of 1 to 10. The ANWR averages: 9.0 for Republicans, 0.9 for Democrats. Offshore drilling numbers are similar in both cases.

Blowback

She’s really articulate, which is something we need after this President (not to mention McCain’s awkward delivery).

Palin absolutely rocks! She is my kind of conservative woman.

Palin’s your gal.

Hawkins1701 on June 26, 2008 at 5:21 PM

Well, I must say that is encouraging. Keep in mind that she is talking about something that she knows inside and out, which helps.

Her accent is cute. Being a native Michigander, I can appreciate that little “you know”, or more accurately, “you noe.” It’s a northern thing.

BigD on June 26, 2008 at 5:22 PM

I’m beginning to really despise this phrase, “addicted to oil.” At this point, our lifestyles are so completely wrapped around oil that it’s kinda like saying we’re “addicted to air” or “addicted to water.” The word “addiction” implies that it’s something you think you need, but you really don’t. An “addiction” is something that’s bad for you, probably immoral, and needs to be eliminated even if it’s painful. I agree with long-term elimination strategies, but for the foreseeable future it’s not an “addiction”! It’s a complete and total necessity to life in modern America. We’re not talking about a few months or years of “painful withdrawal” if oil went away tomorrow. We’re talking people dying in huge numbers because there’s no other way of getting their food, cooling/heating their homes, getting to work to earn a living, etc. without oil. Ugh!

aero on June 26, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Palin for Prez Clarence Thomas for V.P. and we will let mccain be special assistant to the assistant secretart of defense.

custer on June 26, 2008 at 5:28 PM

She is good — very articulate, to the point, and she appears well informed. Didn’t notice a penchant for platitudes or buzzwords or glib sound bites, either.

I’m with her on ANWR, but that’s an Alaskan issue that Alaskans will benefit from. Good for them, more power to ‘em, but even Daschle would make exceptions for his own state’s benefit.

How is she on national policies and issues.

Dusty on June 26, 2008 at 5:31 PM

As a woman I would be proud for her to be the VP instead of Hillary Clinton as President. She is a great conservative and very intelligent woman. She will be an asset to McCain, especially in educating him over ANWR.

jencab on June 26, 2008 at 5:31 PM

If McCain has a working brain, he’ll lasso that brilliant rising star in Alaska. Palin not only sounds like a winner, she looks the winner. I’ve already compared her likeness to the Columbia Pictures logo. Strong, capable and beautiful.

sloopy on June 26, 2008 at 5:31 PM

The hilarious part of her voice is listening to Kudlow come barging back into the conversation after she talks, with his loud Washington self.

She’s bright and well focused, and contrasting her with mumbles McCain or especially with stuttering, “uh…aaahhh…weeeellllll” Obama would be abusive and really fun.

But not just our (eeevil, degenerate, profligate) lifestyles, but our livelihoods, and our lives. Plastics, fertilizer, and gasoline all come from oil.

Oil is a blessing from [deity of your choice]. Oil has and continues to lift billions out of poverty. Oil allows ordinary people to live lives that only kings could live before.

To try to make it out as eeeevil is just…er…typical, of the up=downism the Left peddles.

She may be too competent and become too popular for McCain’s tastes. I’ll bet he’d feel a bit threatened by her, particularly if she generates the kind of following seen here. His ego plays a big part in this thing.

I expected Schwarzenegger to be socially liberal, but he has turned out to be totally worthless on every level.

packsoldier on June 26, 2008 at 5:43 PM

It’s wonderful to see a normal perpective and intelligence from a fellow Republican conservative on the issue that I’m most familiar with. And no globaloney horseshit – did you notice?

I’m just afraid (and expect) that McCain will put some dud like Crist into the spot. He needs to make a bold move. It’s obvious that he would be only a one-term President, in any case. His VP choice will be a make-or-break one for him.

McCain is and will continue to be a disaster for our once-ascendant Republican Party. He can’t effectively argue against high energy costs and energy independence (the key issues of the day) since he has been a part of the damn problem, and the base does not trust him on this or a number of other issues.

Don’t ya just love Arnold’s emphasis on a fuel source — electric — a problem for CA which, in part, brought him the Governorship? I suppose he’s changed all that now and CA is now self sufficient instead of being addicted to out of state supplies.

California electric cars fueled by NV, OR, and AZ power plants are SEXY!

He’s still great with the script though, even if it doesn’t even measure up to Conan the Barbarian.

I’m just trying to point out that the impact of oil from ANWR on the price of crude, and the amount of oil obtained from overseas, is relatively small. It’s become an ideological fight rather than a practical one, which should be obvious to anyone who bothers to run the numbers. The only reason Palin’s pushing this is because her state stands to profit from it, especially with the price of crude being so high. There’s nothing wrong with that, but pretending that it will alleviate our energy woes is dishonest. Schwarzenegger’s right in saying that the impact on prices will be small.

This “scaling” you learned in intermediate economics. Does it say that increasing the supply won’t have any effect on the price?

I’m just trying to point out that the impact of oil from ANWR on the price of crude, and the amount of oil obtained from overseas, is relatively small.

And “scaling” explains why an additional 800,000 bbl/day of Saudi oil will have a very large impact on the price of crude, while an additional 1 million bbl/day of ANWR oil will have a relatively small impact?

Tell me more of this “scaling.” I’m intrigued.

I’m not too familiar with Alaskan politics, but I’m certain that there are plenty of things left on her plate after a few months in office. Her efforts against corruption are commendable, and the pipeline will probably be a boon for Alaskans. However, that does not make her Vice Presidential material, and elevating her to some kind of expert status in matters dealing with the country’s energy security is foolish. She’s trying to build support for something that would help her state’s economy a great deal, but would only make a tiny dent in the country’s energy problems. Those are two separate issues, but her conservative fans are conflating the two of them.

Big S on June 26, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Just how serious is Arnold’s oil addiction? When he’s not flying a helicopter, he flies a Gulfstream IV:

A single Gulfstream IV jet burns 5,000 pounds of fuel in the first hour of flight and 3,000 pounds of fuel every additional hour, according to the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, a U.S. government agency.
