Flip-flop confirmed: Obama says D.C. gun ban “went beyond constitutional limits”

posted at 6:05 pm on June 26, 2008 by Allahpundit

The money bit’s at 38 seconds in if you’re pressed for time. After a day spent paying lip service to both sides of the debate while studiously avoiding the issue of whether the actual statute at stake in Heller was unconstitutional, he finally bites the bullet (no pun intended) and addresses it. See Marc Ambinder for a list of the things you’d have to believe to convince yourself that this isn’t an opportunistic reversal. I wonder if the latest news from Gallup played any role.

After FISA, public financing, and now his reactions over the last few days to Court rulings, the time is ripe for a poll on his conspicuous tack to the right. In particular, I’m curious to see what percentage of well informed voters from each side think he’s honestly changing his mind about this stuff versus what percentage think he’s acting out of pure political expedience. (Lesser informed voters probably don’t realize he’s flip-flopped at all, a fact he’s surely counting on.) Wouldn’t be the first time a politician’s maneuvered during the general election to claim the center, but of course the Messiah is no ordinary politician according to his apostles. Is any of this doing damage to his aura as the avatar of liberal Hopenchange? Get crackin’, Rasmussen.

Well said and precisely the point I have been making annoyingly and habitually for months now: Nothing Obama does will move any of his disciples off him for any reason.

Whatever he says at any given time will be gospel no matter if it contradicts or betrays something he said or promised 5 minutes ago. There’s proof of this all over the web today and every day, See: campaign finance, NAFTA, FISA, DC Gun ban, Countrywide, talking to Imajihadwhackjob, yada yada yada.

Obama=Messiah, Bush/McCain=Satan and acolyte. That is the only equation that matters to the Obamans.

Mike D. on June 26, 2008 at 6:16 PM

His supporter’s do not and will not give a god*amn america wit that this clown can’t make up his damn mind about any issue that really matters. Again you McShame groupies…tell me where Obama states that LEGAL gun ownership for REGISTERED gun owners should be abolished? How is he proposing to limit YOUR rights…assuming you’re not some criminal scumbag or somebody too lazy to register your firearms.

Good grief. He’s “not in the camp of their overall reasoning”? So he agrees with the Dem conclusion that the decision was wrong, just not in agreement as to why it’s wrong?

DanKenton on June 26, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Uhhhm. I’m not a McShame groupie, but I’ll take a shot.

He had previously said that the DC gun ban was consitutional. Ban meaning “prohibition.” So gun ownership was “illegal.” Registration was “impossible.” That sounds suspiciously like a limitation of anyone and everyone’s rights, whether criminal scumbag or not. But I’m not a 2nd Amendment expert, so I could be wrong.

And he still seems to be bitterly clinging to the notion that different localities can have different restrictions.

misterpeasea on June 26, 2008 at 6:35 PM

“went beyond constitutional limits”

…and who would know better? This socialistic, radical supporting, extremist is in an excellent position to know what is beyond “constitutional limits.” Hell, he lives there.

second digit on June 26, 2008 at 6:37 PM

I will never understand why people would vote for him…hes not even an empty suit…hes just empty period…what is wrong with america these days?

SoCalInfidel on June 26, 2008 at 6:38 PM

Yeah- Obama had to bite the bullet before his loose cannon opponents went off half cocked and opened fire on his anti-gun stance. Moderates would go ballistic if he remained too anti-gun.

With the flip flopping he’s playing Russian Roulette; eventually many will set their sights on his lack of principles. If he doesn’t keep his powder dry and stay on target he’ll end up shooting himself in the foot by opening the way for constant sniping at his weaknesses. If the media drops the hammer on Obama and his opportunism he risks handing the election to McCain lock, stock and barrel.

Obama is just another flash-in-the-pan phenomenon waiting to get shot down.

Yes we still have the fed background checks, once that gets the thumbs up that is the end of the ‘registration’ process.

DanKenton on June 26, 2008 at 6:28 PM

I’m no McCain groupie, but Obama favored the DC and Chicago ban. That limited the rights of everyone in the city. Furthermore he’s been on record in favoring state handgun bans as well.

As far as registration, it’s not a matter of being “lazy”- few jurisdictions require registration, which usually faces serious political opposition since registration is the first step towards bans and confiscation.

But feel free to expound on a subject that you know absolutely nothing about. Really.

DanKenton on June 26, 2008 at 6:28 PM

REGISTERED? What means this? I have never “registered” a firearm and, as an American citizen, my 2A rights are not infringed by any “registration” scheme. (Except for that damnable form 4473 if you buy from an FFL, but that is maintained at the store and is only referred to if a gun is used in a crime…supposedly) The only register I have is a list of make, model, and serial numbers that I keep in the safe in case one of mine is stolen. Are you proposing a registration system akin to Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany, or (insert favorite totalitarian regime here)? That worked out well for the registrants, didn’t it? No, I won’t be registering anything of mine unless they are gonna issue ammo and spare magazines for the registered firearm.

Barntender on June 26, 2008 at 6:57 PM

Barack Obama sought to straddle the subject by saying he favors an individual’s right to bear firearms as well as a government’s right to regulate them.

The media, the AP, and the Messiah speaketh with fork tongues.

He finally won me over! Normally I tire of the “change” and “hope” nonsense, because he never gives us any specifics, etc. But here he’s shown us exactly what kind of “change” he’s all about. Changing positions. Now, for the obvious joke (re: “changing positions”) – If only Hillary had followed the same game plan years ago, Bill might not have been so bored and needed to seek action elsewhere.

As for Mr. Obama Head-Bob, what the heck was that all about. “yeah…yeah…yeah…I know you’re going to stuff the SCOTUS gun ban ruling up my arse…I just know it…yeah” Well, of course he is, Obambi, don’t be ridiculous.

And you effed it up something awful. You took both sides of the ruling and both sides of the gun ban. You’re on all four sides of a single issue – you have it surrounded.

Wait! He’s got a gun!

TroubledMonkey on June 26, 2008 at 7:45 PM

If Obama were to be elected, wouldn’t his office get kinda crowded, what with having to have a “focus group” present consensus on each and every decision he would have to make.

Can see him on his first day at work now…..”Oh shit, ya mean I’m the one who has to decide….and “Present” won’t cover it?”

I was thinking Sotada-Says One Thing And Does another. Then I found out it was recipe for grilled scallions in almond tomato sauce:

Preheat grill. Place scallions on cooler part of grill and cook until dark green and tender, about 2 minutes per side. Meanwhile, place almonds, tomatoes, garlic, paprika, mint and parsley into a mortar. Grind to fine paste and place in a mixing bowl. Whisk in oil to emulsify and add vinegar. Remove scallions from grill and toss in bowl. Toss to coat and serve hot or cold

Wait a minute. The vinefar and the hot or cold part seem to apply! :)

Nelsa on June 26, 2008 at 8:10 PM

ooops-vinefar=vinegar .Just like me to screw up a recipe.

Could it be that WonderBoy has had an influential colloquy with his Godfather, Uncle Teddy Kennedy, who weighs in via a spokesman:

WASHINGTON, DC— Anthony Coley, spokesman for Senator Edward M. Kennedy, today released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision striking down the District of Columbia’s handgun ban.

“Senator Kennedy has long been committed to reasonable gun control laws, and is concerned that this decision opens Pandora’s box. Much of the progress we’ve made in making Americans safer by placing reasonable restrictions on the possession of firearms is now in doubt. It’s a bitter irony that this setback comes in the name of a right to self-defense. As Senator Kennedy has repeatedly pointed out, members of the Roberts Court have consistently shown their determination to impose regressive changes in the law despite their claims of judicial humility at their confirmation hearings.”

Don’t these two birdbrains know what the Second Amendment says? “Regressive” my fanny! I guess that Roberts and Alito were not deferential enough to the Old Bull.

Imagine that this were the 2nd Amendment:

Reproductive freedom, being necessary to the lifestyle women want to lead, the right of women to obtain abortions shall not be infringed.

…and half the population was arguing that this was not an individual right but an empowerment of the govt.

And imagine that despite this clear language, cities and states strictly regulated abortions and in many instances banned them altogether.
