Spokesman: Obama opposes the Fairness Doctrine

FISA, NAFTA, the death penalty decision, now this. How many lefty hearts is Barry O planning to break to win an election?
There may be some Democrats talking about reimposing the fairness doctrine, but one very important one does not: presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama…
“Senator Obama does not support re-imposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters,” said press secretary Michael Ortiz in an e-mail to B&C late Wednesday.
“He considers this debate to be a distraction from the conversation we should be having about opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible,” said Ortiz.
“[T]hat is why Senator Obama supports media ownership caps, network neutrality, public broadcasting, as well as increasing minority ownership of broadcasting and print outlets.”
I’ve got a nutty hunch that once he’s free and clear of the electorate the “conversation” he has in mind about opening up the airwaves to new viewpoints is going to lead to him “reconsidering” his position on Fairness, much as he “reconsidered” his position on public financing. And why not? The congressional leadership is all for it:
The speaker of the House made it clear to me and more than forty of my colleagues yesterday that a bill by Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.) to outlaw the “Fairness Doctrine” (which a liberal administration could use to silence Rush Limbaugh, other radio talk show hosts and much of the new alternative media) would not see the light of day in Congress during ’08. In ruling out a vote on Pence’s proposed Broadcaster’s Freedom Act, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-CA.) also signaled her strong support for revival of the “Fairness Doctrine” — which would require radio station owners to provide equal time to radio commentary when it is requested…
“Do you personally support revival of the ‘Fairness Doctrine?’” I asked.
“Yes,” the speaker replied, without hesitation.
Meaningful statement of political intent or Kanjorski-esque smokescreen to appease the nutroots while secretly planning to do nothing about the problem? I’m inclined to think it’s the latter only because the Dems would be nuts to galvanize a dispirited conservative base after the election by going after Limbaugh et al. If they want to consolidate their gains and build a semi-permanent majority, the smart thing to do is avoid partisan nonsense and focus on bread and butter economic legislation and health care. That’ll earn them some trust by demonstrating a seriousness of purpose and it’ll bolster Obama’s “new politics” image by not getting bogged down in a war with the GOP. Conservative talk radio will attack them, of course, but they’re better off answering with results and otherwise ignoring it than by antagonizing us with some heavy-handed lunge at silencing the opposition to clear their way. Obama, at least, seems to be thinking big picture so he might very well realize that. I wonder, though, if he and Pelosi can resist if the left insists on thrusting this upon them. Exit question: Anyone see President Obama vetoing a Democrat bill to revive Fairness?

If he’s against the Fairness Doctrine, it’s because he’s got something far more restrictive in mind. Sorry, but I’m not biting on this one.
MadisonConservative on June 25, 2008 at 9:39 PM
He’s lying.
Now that the primary is done, he is going to pander to the center and the right to try to pick off weak minded people like Hagel.
Don’t be fooled. This guy makes Bill Clinton seem trustworthy by comparison.
JayHaw Phrenzie on June 25, 2008 at 9:39 PM
Until it becomes safe not to do so.

I could see his lips moving. Everytime his lips move, he’s lying.
JayHaw Phrenzie on June 25, 2008 at 9:43 PM
I don’t believe this false prophet.
The democrats and their honcho, Pelosi, wants this passed.
The fairness doctrine must go down.
jencab on June 25, 2008 at 9:43 PM
I have to say I agree. An unfairness doctrine, perhaps? One social democrat, one Fabian, one anarcho-syndicalist, and a slobbering Buchananite representing the “right”?
DrSteve on June 25, 2008 at 9:44 PM
Yep,
Let’s tack it back to the center for awhile.
If the DC gunban gets overturned by the SCOTUS tomorrow will he all of a sudden become an NRA Life Member?
catmman on June 25, 2008 at 9:45 PM
HAHAHAHA, Wow! He’s really pulling out all the stops now. Of course he will reverse on anything that even remotely looks like he’s moving to the right as soon as he is sworn in…the ‘Big Tent’ of Obamassia is pitched right in front of the bus…but don’t worry, the engine won’t crank up until January 2009.
AUINSC on June 25, 2008 at 9:46 PM
An interesting trip it is indeed, trying to figure out who Obama is and what it is that he stands for.
bridgetown on June 25, 2008 at 9:47 PM
Obama will say ANYTHING to get elected first. Then just watch out next year. It will make Clinton’s reversal on his tax cut promise look like a picnic.
Dennis Miller on O’Rellly tonight said he liked Obama, just would not vote for him, but after these latest flip flops on principles, Dennis said he is also beginning to not like him.
I went from the “beginning to not like him” a few weeks ago to LOATHING this pandering, empty suit, no accomplishments poser today. I hate to think what my reactions to him will be if he gets elected. I might have more sympathy for those afflicted with Bush derangement syndrome.
By the way, I heard Sarah Palin on CNBC tonight talking about drilling in ANWAR. She flat out told the dude on at the 7 pm hour that McCain was WRONG on ANWAR. HEHE. Unfortunately, that probably moves her down in the consideration list. Sigh. She would be good for this ticket.
karenhasfreedom on June 25, 2008 at 9:47 PM
Who was the RINO that Sean Hannity was interviewing and the guy had no clue what implications the doctrine had, but said he supported it because “who doesn’t support something that’s fair”? I’d worry about this type (R) more than Obama.
Marcus on June 25, 2008 at 9:48 PM
I do not trust him on this. Will he veto a bill he otherwise supports because it renews the fairness doctrine after he is elected? Why would he? Standard left approach is to control the media once you achieve power.

I found through Google the answer to my question: Senator George Voinovich (R) of Ohio. He didn’t cry that time, but did hang-up on Sean.

JiangxiDad on June 25, 2008 at 10:03 PM
This is just BS. “He considers this debate to be a distraction” aka he doesn’t want to talk about it now. “opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible,” well if your opening up a market dominated by conservative broadcasting, what does that translate into? So of course he supports caps on ownership, so Rush can’t be heard everywhere. In the end this will be like his public financing promise “Senator Obama does not support re-imposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters,” see he never said he wouldn’t impose fairness doctrine on broadcast companies.

I’m no learned Constitutional scholar, but how would Congress get around the “shall make no law limiting free speech”?
What difference does it make what Obama say’s, when the whim hit’s him he will change his mind and everyone will throw flowers at his feet…

Just like Slick Willy, he will stick his finger in the wind to see which way public opinion is going before saying what he is in favor of and not in favor of.
Lets just hope the empty suit and his bitch wife get sent back to Illinois in November.
Mooseman on June 25, 2008 at 10:19 PM
The same way they did before it was repealed- since the airwaves are “public” (read: belong to the government), the government can tell broadcasters what to do.
Hollowpoint on June 25, 2008 at 10:22 PM
I’m no learned Constitutional scholar, but how would Congress get around the “shall make no law limiting free speech”?
Hog Wild on June 25, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Simple. The Supreme Court will make it so. They determine everything in America these days. Just like they said that campaign finance reform didn’t violate the 1st Amendment. The Court does whatever it wants. Once Obama apoints a justice or two, they’ll pass the Fairness Doctrine, the court will make it legal, and we’ll be enslaved a bit more.
Honestly. Do you seriously think the Constitution matters to liberals at this point? Do you think that’s seriously going to stop them? When was the last time Paper actually protected you from anything when it wasn’t backed up by Force?
Sydney Carton on June 25, 2008 at 10:33 PM
“Diversity” is the weapon Obama will use … rather than be seen affirmatively shutting Limbaugh, et al. up, he’ll just say there need to be more voices, etc.
Probably some sort of rule requiring “local” programming.
BD57 on June 25, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Starting up the Unfairness Doctrine is a move that could eventually start another Civil War. It’s free speech for me but not for thee.
I am reminded of the scene of Jane Fonda put her finger up to her mouth at a Fox News reporter when he was asking her some questions at an anti-war protest a little over a year ago in Washington D.C..
“shhh…”
BobUSMC on June 25, 2008 at 11:05 PM
It’s possible that this idiot has no clue what the Fairness Doctrine is; his statement is right out of the Fairness Doctrine supporters’ playbook.
IrishEi on June 25, 2008 at 11:20 PM
This could be the prelude to Senator McCain making a quick trip to Alaska to see ANWR in person, with Sarah the Governess, and then declaring, “By golly, I see now that drilling here isn’t going to harm a doggone thing except a few mosquitos, and I’m going to support Sarah on this!”
Could be. If McCain had half the sense he was born with.
MrLynn on June 25, 2008 at 11:56 PM
Correction:
“He considers this debate to be a distraction…”
should read:
“He considers debate to be a distraction…”
Kevin M on June 26, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Don’t be confused. Obama is giving the straight left-wing line from Center for American Progress.
They want to get rid of media consolidation of the airwaves.
They want “community” voices to be heard regularly by the stations (even maybe on the board).
They want more black/women owned stations.
If a station fails to meet their criteria, the station will have to pay a 5% tax to PBS.
This is all in the CAP report from last year.
“that is why Obama supports media ownership caps, network neutrality, public broadcasting, as well as increasing minority ownership of broadcasting and print outlets.”
CAP did a programming analysis of the major US stations and found that there was a “conservative” bias. They attributed this to “structural” elements (white ownership, consolidation, and lack of community input)
Obama was a community organizer…so I think we know what he means by that. For me, that means that the local FM station which is all conservative will be gone.
r keller on June 26, 2008 at 12:02 AM
And I have an even nuttier hunch that he won’t.
MB4 on June 26, 2008 at 12:25 AM
It’s going to be fascinating if Obama crosses over to McCain’s right during the general. Sure, it’s unlikely, but he wouldn’t have that far to go, and McCain is so pig headed and narrow minded that he’ll probably stay the course and run to Obama’s left.
If at some point Obama revealed that he’s apposed to amnesty and made a convincing case that he wants to enforce our immigration laws… Hmmmm….

Reinstating the Fairness Doctrine with the modern array of communications methods available would amount to an inexcusable Stalinist tactic worthy of a civil war, but I thought the same thing about the eminent domain decision, so what do I know…. In this case, though, tens of millions of people would be directly affected rather than the few who’ve had their homes confiscated so the fallout might be far more spectacular.
FloatingRock on June 26, 2008 at 12:57 AM
He’s a Democrat: He’ll say anything to get elected….

But won’t the same Fairness Doctrine force Keith Olbadouch to share his seat with a right wing conservative republican?
If not, then it’s hardly “fair”.
As Rush says, he himself “is the balance”

Look on the bright side. If he’s true to form he’ll blame McCain and Republican’s for this position.
coffee260 on June 26, 2008 at 7:54 AM
Yep, and it will be called The Obama Doctrine.
This is just more Orwellian doublespeak. By the way, Bob Beckel is all for the Fairness Doctrine, but Alan Colmes is opposed to it. I wonder who Bob Beckel proposes should decide what “network neutrality” is. Would Barry take Quincy Jones up on his suggestion that we have a “
ministrysecretary of culture”? Maybe he could appoint Michael Moore to that position.Buy Danish on June 26, 2008 at 8:30 AM
We need to prevent the left from hijacking the language on this. It is in no way a FAIRNESS doctrine.
Fair would be to let all sides compete in the marketplace of ideas and those that can sustain themselves shall and those that can’t won’t.
To do otherwise is forcing propoganda down our throats.
The revoltion continues only this time the battle field is the airways and media outlets. My powder is dry, my eye sight keen.

Obama opposes the Fairness Doctrine? There’s only one explanation: he must be confused.
Akzed on June 26, 2008 at 8:53 AM

Using weasel words to avoid honestly addressing the issue.
Not a chance.
Question: What happens when the Fairness Doctrine takes talk radio off the air. Will it go to internet radio, satellite radio or what?
Rush sounds like he has a contingency plan, but I can’t figure out what it might be. Is ad-supported (free) satellite economically feasible?
petefrt on June 26, 2008 at 10:48 AM

Egad! Some idiot posted my comment about McCain and Gov. Palin in the wrong thread!
Er. . . I guess that idiot was me.
Oops.
Well, about the ‘Fairness Doctrine’: Reinstate it, and you’ll have 30+ million people who listen to Rush, Sean, Laura, and a host of others deluging Congress. Maybe the Democrats will turn a deaf ear, if they’re still in the majority, but come 2010 there’ll be a lot of challengers. Should be interesting.
