Mr. Nader, embarking on another third-party bid for the White House, gave several examples of his attempts to testify on President Bush’s nominees, civil liberties and auto safety, the issue that began his career as a consumer advocate.

“They are so small-minded that to keep the myth up that it wasn’t them that got Bush in the White House, it was Nader/LaDuke – to keep that myth and sustain it in the public’s mind, they can’t possibly associate with me or have me testify. Nader even caused me to agree with Obama, probably for the only time in my life.

“Mr. Nader is somebody who, if you don’t listen and adopt all of his policies, thinks you’re not substantive. He seems to have a pretty high opinion of his own work.”

No and the only reason I think that it’s necessary to point out his and Imus’s racism is to counter the poison that Obama himself planted about Republicans.

But the point wasn’t that he was saying these things were ‘black issues’. As I said it is BESIDE THE POINT.

It’s like bizarro world. He said that Obama shies away from negative appearances (like having people with head scarves or black people in the background – that’s from the campaign please don’t imply that I said that people with head scarves or blacks in the background were negative appearances).

The point is that my success doesn’t come because I’m white. . . America doesn’t work that way. There are very few blacks in America that can’t succeed with hard work just like their white counter parts.

That needs to be celebrated. Instead we beat each other up over who is more racist, maybe something that was said could be interpreted as racist. Now we LOOK for racism (manufacture it) instead of point it out (because it’s harder to find than it used to be – which should be good).

Nader contradicted himself. If O addresses the issues specified, wouldn’t he be playing to white guilt? (BTW, Karl at PW notes that O has addressed these issues.)

What’s the percentage of blacks where you live Ed? You are in Wisconsin, right? 1%? 2%? But you are the first to call out ‘RACIST!’ when someone talks about something you don’t encounter. That’s par for the course.

It’s racist to assume that lead paint, asbestos and predatory lending are “black issues.”

More blacks in every corner of society. Not because they are black, but because they are the best person for the job. Dungy, Rivers, professional athletes, but also doctors and lawyers (Johnny Cochran could represent me any time – but I couldn’t afford him). My town’s mayor is black, most of the city council, and now the guy who is probably going to be President is black.

My issue is that we agree that racism, segregation, and slavery were awful. But everyone has opportunity. EVERYONE – every race, every religion, every age, every sex, EVERYONE HAS EQUAL OPPORTUNITY.

It doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world. But it just seems like this country is the very first to talk about how awful it is here if someone says something controversial about race (everything about race will be controversial if you want it to be).

Why haven’t people jumped on Obama for crying that he’s not Muslim like it was a smear. Even Seinfeld knew that he had to say ‘not that there’s anything wrong with that’ 10 years ago when addressing homosexuality.

To me Obama’s insistence that being Muslim would be bad is INHERENTLY BIGOTED. Now he didn’t use a racial slur, or make a negative comment about it, but it does imply inferiority if he were Muslim.

It’s beside the point though. America is a great nation despite its past sins. Calling people racist for saying things doesn’t help. It’s frustrating because I’ve dealt with it all my life dude. While society has created more opportunities for blacks, claims of racism is getting worse, not better. I the flippant claims of racism to stop please. We are Americans in the greatest nation during the greatest time. Can we stop beating each other up for it? Please?

I’m sad to say that many people, what I perceive to be a substantial minority, think precisely in this manner.

I get the “acting white” thing all the time from left and right. I’ve been told “you’re not black” because of my interests, pursuits and intellect. My favorite is “You don’t sound black.”

I actually think HAers are taking it easy on this thread out of consideration to your expressed sensitivities. If you had posted a flaming screed….I’m guessing that most of your commenters would have agreed with it.
