Video: The stupid yet obligatory “ballgirl makes amazing catch” clip

posted at 10:21 pm on June 24, 2008 by Allahpundit

Yes, of course it’s fake. Good lord. Do people not watch baseball on TV anymore? In 25 years, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sequence of camera angles starting here around :22 with the field-level close shot of the ballgirl. Let alone the unlikely, melodramatic, frozen-in-place reactions of the catcher and outfielder.

Even so, it’s marginally cooler than the “Kobe jumps the speeding car” fake, if only because nothing he does can be considered fully cool anymore following the apocalyptic diss of “tell me how my ass tastes.”

Blowback

AP is there, as always, providing the hard hitting analysis we all love.

Looks like a clip from a bad kids sports movie.

As I hyped this on http://gatordoug.blogetery.com/2008/06/24/video-the-greatest-fake-catch-evah/
It is not Salma Hayek wrestling Halle Berry in Jell-O but, it is still OK!

Gatordoug on June 24, 2008 at 10:29 PM

Reminds me of the spoof of Obama sitting at a meeting with a fake ‘Great Seal’ in front of him.

I mean, come on, no one would be stupid enough to actually be seen with a laughable prop like that.

Bishop on June 24, 2008 at 10:30 PM

If the Cubs end their World Series drought this year, that will be far more amazing.

radjah shelduck on June 24, 2008 at 10:31 PM

I will go with her actually doing the jump, but it was all set up with the ball being tossed from a fan in the stands.

I will go with the Minor League team setting it up, to promote their team. They are always trying to come up with crazy ideas to promote their team, so this is on par, and will boost their attendance, and marriage proposal for the ball girl.

WoosterOh on June 24, 2008 at 10:34 PM

In 25 years?

DaveS on June 24, 2008 at 10:36 PM

Should of read the link first, Gatorade.

WoosterOh on June 24, 2008 at 10:37 PM

Do people not watch baseball on TV anymore?

Nah, when I was a kid I preferred spending my weekend mornings watching fun sport, consisting mainly of an assortment of cartoons.

Spirit of 1776 on June 24, 2008 at 10:28 PM

EXACTLY what I was thinking. This sh*t looks like a scene from “Ed” or, even worse, “Little Big League”.

malan89 on June 24, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Do people not watch baseball on TV anymore?

Only if it is the Red Sox, because it is damn near impossible to get good tickets to Fenway anymore.

Getting 5+ contiguous tickets is impossible. Thank God I am close to Fenway South

I hate to say it but the Red Sox are becoming the 2000 version of the Yankees, (mainly because of the band wagon fans).

/Rant off

The only team I can recall being mentioned in the video was “Tacoma”, and having been born in Seattle and spending my entire life in the state I can assure you that there isn’t anybody in Tacoma anywhere near creative enough to come up with something like that.

I feel fairly confident that nobody from Tacoma will challenge me on this point because it’s unlikely any of them have computers let alone Internet access.

FloatingRock on June 24, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Dang. . . .I thought it was real when I saw it on
break. Oh well, Spoofed again. LOL

By the way, I was just kidding about Tacoma. It’s not such a bad place and is cited in Steve Miller Band’s song, Rock ‘N Me.

FloatingRock on June 24, 2008 at 11:03 PM

Now that,was awesome,excellent 10 foot jump,
and a mesmerizing display of fancy foot work!

Talk about speed and agility,Speedy Gonzales,
fastest mouse in all he Mexico, could learn
a few pointers from ballgirl! haha.:)

Not real, but inspired by a Seattle Mariners ball girl who made a couple of good catches during a Mariners/Yankees game in 1996 (scroll down for video of the catches).

SisterToldjah on June 24, 2008 at 11:06 PM

That’s got Chackie Chan written all over it.

“This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by MLB Advanced Media”

That’s just stupid for MLB to do a copyright takedown for a 30 second clip of a ball girl. What do they want? Do they plan to sell me the clip for $10? Idiots. Way to piss off your baseball fans.

greggish on June 25, 2008 at 12:30 AM

But I want to believe.

Shy Guy on June 25, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I think that may have been the Fresno Grizzlies.

7 posts per day (average) with at least 1 every other day using “lord”, so I’ll take > 178 times per year. :-)

SouthernGent on June 25, 2008 at 2:15 AM

It’s totally fake, but very well done. Nobody named Brent Johnson ever played for the Tacoma Rainiers for one. Not to mention, the Youtube account belongs to a video company and is titled as a viral spot for Gatorade.

Also, the graphics and overlays on the screen are not consistent with actual Fresno broadcasts. (the statdium had to be Fresno, Cheney stadium in Tacoma looks nothing like that).

Finally, when they show a shot of the catcher “Alfonso” it’s clear the image is reversed. (you can see the backwards “s” in Grizzlies on the left side of his chest, not to mention his glove is on his right hand and there hasn’t been a left-handed catcher that I can remember since about 1990).

A reversed image wouldn’t have happened on a live sports broadcast.

At least we don’t have Mayor Niggles and a statue of Lenin, not to mention queer parades and ugly naked bicycle riders.

By the way, I was just kidding about Tacoma. It’s not such a bad place

FloatingRock on June 24, 2008 at 11:03 PM

At least Tacoma is a place where you don’t have to be a millionaire to buy a house.

platypus on June 25, 2008 at 3:55 AM

Almost forgot. Tacoma can’t be THAT bad a place – I live here.

platypus on June 25, 2008 at 4:07 AM

Cheney Stadium is a nice homey place to watch a ball game. It’s worth the occasional drive from Portland to watch the Beavers on the road vs the Rainiers.

Glad I’m not the only one noticing this. Not respectful to believers on this site. At all. AP has a better vocabulary than to have no other alternatives to “Wow” or “Sheesh.”

Think I’m gonna start saving links for a list to show to AP all at once – only takes a sec to save them – cause the most charitable explanation is, AP doesn’t realize how much, or how ostentatiously, he’s doing it.

Man, after the way they blew the Crosstown Classic here in Chicago, maybe the White Sox should look into drafting this gal! WOW!

This got me to thinking…any of you Cubs fans out there help me out. Who was the ball girl for the Cubs in 1988 after they fired the one for being in playboy?

yakwill83 on June 25, 2008 at 8:48 AM

stupid yet obligatory

Dude: You’re running this website. If you don’t want to post or link to something, just don’t do it. Or, if you keep doing it anyway, quit bitching about it.

Marla Collins, I believe. I recall hearing about an early spring game, when she was dressed for the weather, and Harry Carey noted that she was out of her normal costume, by saying on live radio, “this is the first time I’ve seen her out of her hot pants”.

Speaking of baseball and things that can not be real, I’d like to thank AllahPundit and his New York Mets for single-handedly making certain that the Colorado Rockies and the Seattle Mariners are no longer the worst teams in baseball.
