Where do you believe that $3 comes from? It is not deducted from your refund if you are due one, nor is it added to your payment if you owe one. It’s just a little box on your tax return that you check with no financial consequence to you whatsoever, right? So, where do those three dollars come from?

Public financing of campaigns is important to:
1) John mcCain
2) Russ Feingold
3) the NY Times

…and no one else.

james23 on June 24, 2008 at 11:50 AM
That's not the point. As with WJC's indiscretions in the Oval Office, it wasn't so much that he was cheating on his wife that bothered me (although that was certainly bad enough), it was that he lied under oath about it. That was the impeachable offense, not the screwing per se.

Same here. Even if it's an issue I'm not all that interested in, his pandering should be pointed out--otherwise his tactics will work. We need to make sure everyone knows about his flips and his flops--not just the people he's wooing at that particular moment. If his changeover on FISA pleases the mods, it pisses off the MoveOn crowd. We need to make sure that both groups know he isn't a man with honest convictions, he is a man who is pandering to you and hopes you're too stupid to notice.

Inside baseball is completely beside the point. What maters is Obama clearly and in his own words breaking his word, then in essence daring the viewer not to call him on it.

And sure, he's got his band of zombies who won't care.

But holy freakin' moly they ain't the freakin' point.

Folks there aren't any caucus states in the general election. And there aren't enough Obamatrons to win without him an election without appealing to a whole lot of Regular Joes.

And while Regular Joe may not know what public financing is, he does know a liar when he sees one.

Good ad.

As further follow-up, the Obama people love to talk about Obama's "one million" Facebook supporters. I went on his supporter page and listed the members. Of the first 50 results, at least 14 were from foreign countries and another 8 were high school students. Interesting, no?

It's not aimed at the nutroots supporters, it's aimed at fence sitters that haven't committed yet. Just trying to shove them off the fence in the right direction.

*** Obama has decided to not suck at the taxpayer teat, unlike McCain. If it’s a ‘flip-flop’, then at least it’s in the right direction. *** LimeyGeek on June 24, 2008 at 12:11 PM

I hate most campaign finance laws, including McCain-Feingold. My only campaign laws would be (1) no foreign donors, (2) no corporate / union donors, and (3) all donations must be publicly disclosed. So I'm sympathetic to your view.

But I think we should be very worried about how Obama is financing his campaign. From whom is all Obama's money coming? Are we really to believe that 1.4 million college students and young professionals went on barackobama.com and donated $20 each? I'm sure many did, but given the influence of the hard-left money groups over Obama's campaign, it makes you wonder. And THAT's where I think McCain should hit him.

If the funds available for public financing was to be divided between the two presidential candidates and one declines to participate, does the other receive just half of the funds or the whole pile?

We have way too many people in the electorate who aren’t paying any attention to these things.

The public will start to pay attention at the end of summer, maybe a bit after. The last two to three months are the only period that matters.

I like the ad's structure, but agree with AP that it's so inside baseball people won't understand. I'd like to see a series (3 or 4) 30 second spots, similarly framed, that chip away at Obama's "change" message based on two themes:

(1) Obama is a fraud. E.g., the flip-flop on public financing, the awful way he handled Wright, Ayers, Rezko, his own life story ("I walked away from Wall Street and did community organizing" ... "while my wife was an associate raking in the bucks at Sidley Austin, and then was in a highly paid position at the hospital").

(2) Obama is Carter reincarnated. E.g., taxes, socialist health care, dovist (is that a word?) foreign policy, hostility toward Israel, an energy policy obsessively focused on reducing demand.

But this ad is a start, and I'll take it!

I hope the McCain team plans on keeping the heat on Obama each and every time he breaks another promise or tells another lie — which seems to occur on a day-to-day basis with The Chosen One.

This issue is for sissies.

Obama has decided to not suck at the taxpayer teat, unlike McCain. If it's a 'flip-flop', then at least it's in the right direction.

Whining about how he changed his mind (and ended up doing something more in line with so-called 'conservative' values) only makes McCain look like a poof.

It's far more interesting to observe what this means in the context of the integrity of Democrat party internals.

Some people are so stupid. And yet these are the people that decide most elections. Ugh.

1) John mcCain
2) Russ Feingold
