Holder still with Obama, still causing problems

Eric Holder continues to cast a long shadow over the Barack Obama campaign.  The former deputy AG for the Clinton administration played a key role in perhaps the most scandalous presidential pardon ever, which Clinton issued to fugitive Marc Rich in the last hours of his presidency.  His role in another pardon and in an international custody case has brought the Obama campaign under fire in Florida, where Elian Gonzalez is still seen as a victim of Janet Reno:

Eight years after the furor over the repatriation of Elian Gonzalez to Cuba possibly cost Al Gore the state of Florida in his 537-vote loss to George W. Bush, the international custody saga has returned to haunt another Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama.

With two top advisers who played key roles in the episode— Greg Craig, who represented Elian’s father in Cuba, and Eric Holder, then a Clinton administration deputy attorney general when federal agents stormed the Miami home of Gonzalez’ relatives to remove the then-six-year-old and return him to his father in Cuba—Obama now finds himself on the wrong side of an emotional issue in a battleground state.

The wound reopened again last week after Gonzalez returned to the headlines in South Florida following a report in a Cuban communist youth newspaper that he has joined Cuba’s Young Communist Union.

The Obama campaign had hoped to make inroads into the Cuban-American community in south Florida this year with a mix of new initiatives and tough talk on Cuba, but the presence of Craig and Holder has provoked anger instead, and not just among Republicans.  Manny Diaz, the Democratic mayor of Miami but also the attorney for the Gonzalez family in the US, has so far refused to endorse Obama for the general election.  Obama’s normally-adoring crowds get joined by dozens of protestors in Florida, angry at Obama’s inclusion of two men they see as tainted by the Gonzalez affair.

One has to wonder why Obama, who ran on a campaign of “change”, populates that campaign with leftovers like Holder and Craig.  Holder has more than one problem; the Rich pardon followed a similar action for several Puerto Rican terrorists of FALN, which Holder also helped move through the DoJ.  In fact, Holder admitted that he didn’t bother to contact the victims of the terrorists for their input, and in general did a poor job with the FALN pardons, and on pardons in general:

And yet Obama appointed Holder not just to the VP selection committee but also to his body of foreign-policy advisers — a role for which Holder has no obvious experience or insight. It looks like a clear signal that Holder will get a high-ranking role in an Obama administration, even though nothing Holder has done has demonstrated much competency at all. In the case of the Rich pardon, he served as a key conduit in what looks like a bald quid pro quo to gain cash from Rich’s ex-wife Denise, who pushed for the pardon. It seems all the more strange, since Obama attacked Hillary Clinton over the issuance of that pardon as well as the FALN pardons, to hire Holder to not one but two posts in his campaign.Nor is that the first controversy involving Holder.  When police shootings in Washington DC escalated, Reno put Holder in charge of a federal probe to see if civil-rights violations had taken place.  What the DoJ failed to acknowledge was that Holder had been one of the people responsible for investigating police shootings in DC before his appointment to the Clinton administration — and that his new probe would be a conflict of interest, as he would in part be investigating his own actions.

Does the Gonzalez affair reach those depths?  Not really; in fact, other than the heavy-handed tactics that Reno and Holder deployed to rip Elian from the home of his relatives, it’s difficult to imagine another outcome of that case.  With his mother dead, Elian’s father had first claim on custody — and had American courts ruled differently, it would not have taken long before a country like Iran or Cuba began granting custody of American citizen children to parents in their countries under similar circumstances.  The Gonzalez case was an unhappy set of circumstances that would never have had a completely happy ending for all involved.

However, why Obama wants to associate himself twice over with one of the authors of that case seems beyond understanding.  Holder has all sorts of baggage clinging to him like a Midwesterner and his Bible.  Now that baggage has transferred to Obama, for no apparent good purpose.  If this is the kind of decision-making we’ll continue to see with Obama, voters should wonder what “change” means.

Holder is not the man he knew…

right2bright on June 24, 2008 at 8:08 AM

If this issue reaches critical mass, Mr. Holder should be looking at the underside of a bus any moment…

D2Boston on June 24, 2008 at 8:11 AM

…Or is this just another attempt to imply guilt by association?

The other side is going to say some bad things, you know!

singlemalt_18 on June 24, 2008 at 8:14 AM

Exactly HOW BIG a BUS does Obama have? Is there room enough for everyone?

originalpechanga on June 24, 2008 at 8:19 AM

This is interesting,Obama’s magic bus tour
is starting to be costly, and Holder is next
for under the bus!

With all the bodys that have been tossed under
the bus,me thinks this is going to cause an
increase in non-exist global warming!
jus sayin!:)

It was all a simple mix-up in the airline tickets. Caroline Kennedy was supposed to go to Miami and talk to the Cuban-Americans, Holder was supposed to go to New England and talk to the guilty whites.

Don’t blame Obama, it’s his travel agent’s fault.

JiangxiDad on June 24, 2008 at 8:20 AM

B.O. is repeating the same mistakes that Jimmy Carter made, namely he is surrounding himself with idiots, charlatans, morons, and nimcompoops, and being in the same company with this bunch of lunkheads could wind up costing him the election.

Not saying this is a bad thing, of course.

pilamaye on June 24, 2008 at 8:22 AM

America wants to vote stupid again. Holder is just another fool that jumped onto the Obama cult wagon.

When Obama runs short on ideas, he enlists Carter admin retreads.

Nothing new here. Still losers for America.

originalpechanga:Its not the size that matters, maybe
it’s how well you stack the bodys
under da bus!haha :)

It mystifies me how Obama has gotten away with bringing back so many of the Clintonistas. I can see why he did it in the primaries, as they were all sticks in the eyes of Hillary and Bill, but if you are running as a change agent you just don’t do this. Aren’t there enough talented people out there who don’t have any Clinton stink on them?

rockmom on June 24, 2008 at 8:41 AM

Maybe Ed or someone else can correct or corroborate what I have to say. I’m trying to put two and two together in my memory and I don’t know if I’m right. I seem to remember that Holder was high in Reno’s DOJ and I was infuriated that he was anti 2nd Amendment. He believed it wasn’t an individual right. Now No. 2 - When W’s administation took over he, of course, got rid of Reno but Holder was left in his spot at the DOJ. I don’t know how long after that he remained. Unbelievable! Who’s the bigger fool, Obama or W?

He’s betting on the fact most voters don’t take the trouble to vet his advisors. He’s right. McCain plays the same game with Juan Hernandez, but it doesn’t work as well. Barry also has to be getting a little jumpy about throwing so many overboard, and may be trying to stem that tide.

rockmom:Your right,When Obama say’s McCain is carrying on a
third term of President Bush,Obama is by far
duplicating Clintons steps, and so far,he’s getting
away with it!

I thought the lesson’s of history only included
not repeating wars, however it looks like Obama is
a reincarnated Bill Clinton. And again the lefty
MSM just can’t get enough!haha:)

My guess is Holder has probably directed some serious money Obama’s way, or else he is a “special friend” of someone else who has. That’s usually the reason these incompetent hacks like Holder get hired — unless they’re a member of some identity group that the candidate is trying to pander to, like the Hispanic incompetent Patti Solis Doyle, who repeatedly mismanaged H. Clinton’s campaigns.

As for Obama’s promised “change” — we all know now what that means: more of the kind of corrupt and incompetent management the Dims brought us during the Carter and Clinton administrations.

AZCoyote on June 24, 2008 at 9:04 AM

The agent of change sure is big on bringing in every free agent from the Clinton administration. Another agent of change …. recently ousted Senate Majority Leader Tom “Milkdud” Daschle, now Co-Chairman of the Obama campaign.

Tom Ridge wiped the floor with Daschle on Fox’s Sunday program. Not that it’s difficult to do.

fogw on June 24, 2008 at 9:06 AM

Jeff: what was your problem with Holder? Was it Waco or the Elian Gonzales abduction?

Yeah, Janet Reno. Ruby Ridge, Waco and Elian Gonzales.

Domestic terrorism offered by the US Government.

Expect Obama to offer more of those events if America votes stupid again.

“And have I mentioned… he’s black?”

Akzed on June 24, 2008 at 9:13 AM

My problem with Holder is that he was first appointed a judge by Ronald Reagan, of all people, and that he was appointed acting AG by George W. Bush before Ashcroft was confirmed. Will these Republicans ever learn?

As if Iran and Cuba takes cues from us on how to govern… They probably already do this, without us even knowing.

Seixon on June 24, 2008 at 9:36 AM

Umm, countries like Iran, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, et al already grant custody of American citizen children to the parents living in their countries. The US is one of only a few countries that obey forgein courts’ custody decisions.

I never believed Clinton did it for the money. I think he got the double bubble from Denise. He’s a cad.

I have a hard time imagining Barack is that stupid. It’s got to be he’s just made a deal with the powers that be — he’ll be the puppet as long as they can make him President. So far, his decision is still looking good.

Dusty on June 24, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Heh…I read this post right after I posted this item on my own blog.

Obama’s absolutely packed his inner circle with Clinton administration retreads.

McCain’s past disqualifies him from being President if we’re getting this picky…slow news day…again?

FYI–the mayor of Miami is “Manny” Diaz not Danny Diaz.

truthmattersfa on June 24, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Holder was also U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia before his appointment to DOJ. He very visibly agreed with DC’s gun ban, which is probably going to be overturned by the Supreme Court today. That’s not going to help his image, and it’s going to remind all those “bitter” gun owners in that Obama is definitely not on their side.

The guy in that picture totally looks like “Head Detective” from “In Living Color”.

MechEng5by5 on June 24, 2008 at 12:13 PM

Obambi “not knowing the people he knew’ reflects a lack of core beliefs that are the basis for a person’s character. How many idiotic mistakes can he continue to make before dimocrats question his obvious lack of judgement? The dumbing of America by putting a labor union in charge of our public school system is working.
