The Real Possum declares “Independence” from public financing?

Barack Obama has apparently decided to double down on his public-financing backflip. On his website, he has now decided to use Independence Day as a theme to cover breaking his pledge to stay within the system that limits both cash and spending in the general election. Declaring his “Independence from a Broken System”, Obama wants the same people who support public financing in elections to give him all of their money in private donations instead. No, really:

Barack Obama just announced a major strategic decision — this campaign will not participate in the broken public financing system for the general election.
Our opponents are dedicated to manipulating this broken system to raise as much money as possible — and they’ve proven they are very good at it.
To compete, Barack has decided to keep putting his faith in ordinary people like you giving only what you can afford.
Make your first contribution to Join Barack today, and declare your independence from our broken system.
This would make sense if Obama actually opposed public financing of elections and campaign-finance reform. Had Obama told his supporters last week that the idea of government-financed elections made little sense in a free society and that his withdrawal would expose that truth, I suspect many people would have agreed with Obama — myself included. The Watergate-era notion that cash and spending limits would drive undue influence out of elections has never been proven correct.
But that’s not what Obama says. His missive included explicit support for public financing of election, explicitly presidential elections. Obama claimed that the specific system was “broken” because of Republican expertise in using 527s, even though Mark Shields pointed out this weekend that Democrats spent three times as much as Republicans on 527s in 2004 and the Democratic advantage in 2008 is two-to-one over the GOP.
Besides, Obama has held office in the Senate for three years. The system hasn’t changed during that period, and certainly not all throughout 2008 when Obama pledged to aggressively negotiate to keep both party nominees within the public-financing system. If Obama has discovered it to be broken, when did he make that discovery, and what event led him to that conclusion? Even more to the point, why hasn’t Obama attempted to fix the problem during his three years in the Senate?
Now Obama wants to generate massive amounts of private donations from supporters of the public-financing system in order to gain a money advantage over an opponent who remains in the public financing system that Obama lionized. The only “independence” this represents is an independence of Obama from his principles, and that applies to anyone who donates to this effort while supporting public financing.

To declare independence from your principles, you have to have principles to start with.

He’s already declared independence from accountability and sound judgment, and this is just taking it a little further.
But don’t call him on it, because that would be a racist distraction.

I wish we could have a campaign like this about the Social Security program.
BigD on June 23, 2008 at 8:53 AM
“The Real Possum” = awesome. They’re smelly creatures, very fitting for the stinky campaign he’s running.
I’m not sure how I feel personally about financing the campaigns. All I know is that running for president is ludicrisly expensive, and is prohibitive to anyone not already rich. A lot of good people are priced out of the system, and that’s where change is needed. I can always hope for change!

But is this really going to hurt Obama?
I really think Obama is getting a huge ego, and I hope that his ego brings him down. The stupid seal, his premature discussions about his “second term” as President, this, his disdain for ordinary voters (”clinging to guns and Bibles”) and more… Does McCain have the stones and the ability to develop a media narrative of Obama as a pretentious phony? If so, I think this will stick. If not, I think this will be water off President Obama’s back. :(

Anyone ever check that box on your 1040? I can’t say I have.
Now if Billy Gates was running as a Republican (kaf-hak) how loudly would the Dems and the MSM be in demanding he take public money to level the playing field? Loud enough I bet.

Change, just more of the same BS but with a smile.
Do you think he really believes the crap he is dishing out and that he is really up to the job? What is his motivation? I am becoming more and more wary of this man.

McCain should just use his wife’s money. This is a non-issue.

Barack Obama: “This is not the publicly funded campaign system I knew.”
Just tack it onto the list, my man. When you run a theme into the ground, you really run it into the ground.
AnonymousDrivel on June 23, 2008 at 9:04 AM
Man he is smart, he knows his supporters…they are as dumb and gullible as a rock.
They will buy this, all he needs to do is give his supporters a “viable” exit strategy, throw in a little smoke, and they will argue for him until the polls close.

They screamed bloody murder back in 1996 when Steve Forbes was in the field. I thought Margaret Warner (PBS, Lehrer’s news hour) was going to explode going on and on about him trying to “buy the election.”

Every day its a new flip/flop,a new distraction, and then
he gets away with this, then right back to the next day,
and a new distraction and flip/flop!

I would have agreed too. But his in-your-face cynicism and sanctimony about it makes me ridicule the whole thing.
Sanctimonia quod cassus vestitus.

Would it be too much for someone to ask Obama when he figured out the system was “broken” and, as noted above, why he did nothing to fix it?
drjohn on June 23, 2008 at 9:38 AM
When you have an army of Kool-Aid slurpers, the media, Hollywood and every assorted moonbat swooning over you, your ego gets so inflated you think you can continue to keep pulling this stuff off.
He’s due for a crash.
JammieWearingFool on June 23, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Hmm.. I’m with Brit Hume on this… I think we, as conservatives, should embrace this and make out Obama as the true conservative to McCain. If you can mix it in with a touch of misogyny then it should utterly destroy his leftist base who will not turn out and then we hold our noses and vote McCain.
Operation Chaos phase 2…

In the end, the candidate with the most money doesn’t always win.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Obama’s fundraising efforts continued to dry up and that cool $84M from the government suddenly looked good?
I bet he’d declare that, even though the system was broken, he had decided to try to make it work, and then his base would mindlessly applaud him for flipping his position again.
How many want to bet that no debate moderator in the upcoming debates will ask Obama why and when the public financing system suddenly became broken?
Seixon on June 23, 2008 at 9:44 AM
Maybe some of Senator Obama’s black friends could set him up with some extra large rims so there will be a lot more room under that bus.

He is still making me dizzy!

I guess the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting dosen’t apply to advertisements. Maybe someone should ask the liberals which way they want it. The public financing was put into affect to make the playing field more “fair”.
rich801 on June 23, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Some might remember Big John Connelly (SecNav, Governor, SecTreas, etc). He had a well deserved reputation as a big money, wheeler dealer with considerable experience buying and stealing elections for LBJ. He refused public money in the 1980 Republican Primary. He entered the fray with mega-bucks but by South Carolina he’d spent most of it, $70 million and had only one delegate to show for it.

If Obama “only” raised $22M in May, what if that rate continues into September and October? After outspending her more than 2 to 1, Obama couldn’t win PA and OH against Hillary–what if he ends up with $45M to spend in September and October, while McCain has $84M?
What happens when a Real Possum crosses the road? Possum, meet bus…

Me too….
He claims 80,736 have declared their independence and wants more people to join to reach a goal of 50,000 by July 4th.
He needs to throw 30,736 under the bus to reach 50,000.

By the way, the Republicans could turn this Vero Possumus thing around:
Obama: We can’t drill our way out of the energy problem until 2030.
McCain and GOP: YES WE CAN!!!
Steve Z on June 23, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Obama has a glass jaw that an effective 527 can use to take him out.
.
How much advertising will it take to make voters unthink thoughts from a good 527 ad? … Enough to make people sick of watching and hearing Obama ads, and make the 527s mock those ads for an unqualified candidate.
.

Man, I sure hope so, Jammie. This is making my head hurt.
Or maybe that’s the smoke in the air from the fires, I don’t know. But this frog in the pot is driving me crazy. I keep yelling “jump out before the water boils!” But they just stay there, each time BO turns the heat up, telling me it’s feelin’ good in the jacuzzi, baby. Join the crowd.
All I see is frog soup.

Obama Lied.
Campaign finance reform died!
lonesomecharlie on June 23, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Sorry to sound like a monotonous mixtape, but Obama isn’t running his Candidacy. The old Washington Dems, the ones who put Bob Beckel out there spreading lies, the ones who have more dirty tricks up their dirty sleeves than Boston has beans, they are running the show. So don’t fall for the “Rookie mistakes” smoke and mirrors. There’s evil there that knows how to do bad well.
Doug on June 23, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Who thinks that if McCain could raise this kind of money that he wouldn’t turn down public financing?
tgillian on June 23, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Doug 12.28 Correct. We had better get some good people working on this, even if McCain won’t.
davod on June 23, 2008 at 12:49 PM
The criminal aspect of McCain/Feingold is how do you plan a campaign if it is illegal to talk to people. Everyone complained aboutt the 527s but if you made an overt attempt to talk with them you are commotting a crime.
davod on June 23, 2008 at 12:51 PM
My understanding is that most of Obama’s money comes from donations that fall below the minimum reporting amount of $250. From whom is all this money coming? How do we know there isn’t fraud? (i.e. the same guy donating 20 times using a credit card and putting in a different fake name each time).
You’ve got to give it to the Big O, though; he’s great at using the web. You pull up barackobama.com and his entire splash page is a contribution form with a relatively small “click here for the website” link. At Johnmccain.com, it takes at least 3 seconds to locate the link that you go to in order to contribute!

The Opossum would seem to be an apt mascot for the Obamanation.
There could even be a new movie, Opossum Day, in which a heroic figure repeatedly feigns death when approached — only to spring up and walk away muttering “Hope!” and “Change”.
