Why do so many of us get upset by entertainers and clowns spouting off things beyond their ken? Even if they do believe what they say (we can’t know), remember they’re just pretty people who get paid vast sums to pretend they’re other people – something five year olds in sandboxes do naturally – by reading what other people write for them.
The fact that this actor may do it better than that actor is irrelevant; the bottom line is, how much intelligent, critical thinking do you expect such people to actually be capable of engaging in? Every now and then one will surprise you, true, but how often does that happen?
Here’s something I’ve wondered before: what is it that actually bothers us most about incidents like this one? (Smith’s just more of the same and won’t be the last)
Is it the mere fact that they have ignorant, small-minded, dangerous opinions? No, nothing new there. Typical of most people, sadly.
Is it the fact that they’re given a public platform on which to share them, lending them a sheen of intelligence and credibility they absolutely do NOT have? Again, nothing new or surprising there, either.
OR…is it the fact that this worthless BS is brought to your attention by beloved alternative news outlets and blogs that SHOULD ignore it because (a) it’s beneath the level of genuine adult concern and (b) that’s what the MSM has always done? I think this last one is what bugs me most (yeah, it’s probably just me).

Re: Smith. The man’s had some success but his career appears to be slipping and may not have much mileage left in it. He has basically one characterization – himself – and that with somewhat limited range. Even when he needs to mimic a real-life character (Ali) it was not very far removed from his natural self. That’s the secret to the career of many a “star”: Give him or her parts tailor-made to fit their personalities and they’ll seem good at what they do every time. OTOH, someone who is truly “good” is the actor who you no longer see on the screen as much as you see the character they play. How often does that happen? Rarely.
(saying this as someone who got a B.A. in Acting, was pretty good at it, but now that I’ve grown up am somewhat ashamed I did it)

” hasn’t been a good time to be an American ” for a long time??? Let’s see if he can make the kind of money he’s made, in a long time say, in Zimbabwe. What a chump!!

Another move I won’t see.
Another actor added to the list of morons and fools.

If these European countries hate America soo much, than we need to stop sending aid for their natural disasters! I have to wonder if any of those countries will send anything to help the people in the Midwest!
I am sick of these actors who have become millionaires from the money of hard working Americans. I for one have not spent a penny at the theaters or video rentals. They are all liberal morons.
btw..John Adams was never concerned with what Europe thought of us. We need to be more like the patriots of our American Revolution.

All of the above.
Anyway, it’s Will opinion and he’s entitled to have it instead of my patronage. I used to keep a book of those celebs I won’t patronize but I threw it out because it was too cumbersome.
The vid is too short, though. Will goes on to compare how Obama is going to return us to the values and core principles of the founding fathers:
He’s obviously not talking about domestic policy. The only thing that can come close to fitting this is Iraq, and even that is a stretch.
The Fresh Prince skipped American History class one too many times.
Dusty on June 24, 2008 at 7:19 AM
Russia now loves America because of Obama. Probably one of the most racist countries on earth. Oh yea.
apoole on June 24, 2008 at 7:23 AM
Well.. I did go see ‘Iron Man’ with Robert Downing Jr.. he did do justice to Tony Stark..
as for boycotting movies..
if I boycotted everyone I disagreed with, there wouldn’t be anything I could watch.. (like ‘Lost’.. I’m NOT giving that up :)
I go case by case.. Tim Robbins.. if Shawshank Redemption is on TV, I’ll watch it.. other than that..
this Will Smith movie?.. wait for the rents..
DaveC on June 24, 2008 at 7:38 AM
Poor, sad little Will Smith. These are indeed sad times for him and his country. In the last few years his life has been in the gutter and is only getting worse. In the last 8 years of horrible existence, he has had to live in a gigantic complex in the desert, had numerous blockbuster films, had to endure his family that by all accounts is perfect, and I have even heard him brag about having a toilet that is completely hands free so as not to require him to clean himself. It does it for him! Just what part of being an American does Will Smith think isn’t good? When overseas, if someone would have criticized this country he could have simply replied, “My ass is happy!” One more Hollywood liberal that will be perfectly happy for Barrack to cure all of our ills with his socialist voo-doo.

After we build a fence along the mexican border we need to build a fence along the california border.
peacenprosperity on June 24, 2008 at 7:47 AM
I’m with you here. If boycotts worked more people would be doing them. Boycotts don’t do anything except make the person who started it feel important.
Why is it that we have people here who get upset at every little stupid thing these celebs say? Why waste your time giving them that power. Just watch the movie if you want to see and ignore everything else they say. If you don’t want to see then don’t. There’s no need to make a big deal over it.
It weird reading this board, it’s like “he’s a liberal and I want nothing to do with him.” The person may be great and what he/she does but that ideology disqualifies him/her from having any worth around here? That’s the impression I get.
If your basement floods and you hire the only plumber in town to fix the leak and he drives up to your house with an Obama bumper sticker on his truck, do you refuse to do business with him? That still leaves you with a flooded basement.
And if you have the ability to fix your own basement, then replace the scenario with something you can’t do or don’t know how to and try to answer the same question.
The point is, you don’t pay them for their political views, you pay them for the trade they provide. Will Smith is an actor, he’s not a bad actor, but he isn’t brilliant. He can spout all the stupid sh*t he wants to, it’s not going to matter to me. I pay to see his movies, outside of that, he can be the biggest moron on the planet, I could care less.

Half-baked rapper to TV star to Movie Star to 2-time Oscar nominee…
Seems being an American has been very good for Will Smith.
KrisinNE on June 24, 2008 at 8:03 AM
Will Smith lives in an echo chamber. Will was simply spewing the same lines thrown down by Michelle Obama. Hollywood is suffering the same fate as the news papers; declining viewers for one industry, declining readers for the other. Elitism is ugly and offensive; what makes our country great is the regular people living their lives in an environment that rewards hard work and creativity. I watch as our kids play youth sports; having been active in this area with my two sons for the past decade, I have the utmost respect for the many mom’s & dad’s that volunteer their spare time to coach our kids, run the snack shacks, take positions on committees, et al… This is where the “real” America exists, which is why Will Smith and other elitists don’t get to see the real America in action. These Liberals are “too busy” with themselves to get involved at that level. They may have a charity or two that has their name attached, and I’m willing to give them credit for that; however, that is not the same as getting involved in your community at the grassroots level.
Keemo on June 24, 2008 at 8:04 AM
To take my point one step further, I love Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, that stuff is the bomb. So what if they’re big huge ass liberals, I’m not paying for their views, I’m buying their ice cream and in essence supporting free market capitalism. I don’t care what they do with the money I gave them after that, it’s not mine anymore, it theirs.
Pcoop on June 24, 2008 at 8:06 AM
I think Will Smith is a great actor. However, his judgment (there’s that word again) is suspect. He did, after all, allow Tom Cruise to recruit him into the cult of Scientology.
Kafir on June 24, 2008 at 8:17 AM
Not quite. They are professional liars and deceivers that get paid vast sums of money to entertain us. Their one and only talent is the ability to mimic just about any human emotion and make you believe they are sincere and honest. Whether or not they are being sincere, honest or even knowledgeable should not be taken into consideration because they are very good at deceiving others and should never be trusted. Why do they hold positions of opinion? Well mainly because we the fans put them there because we truly believe the fantasy person they represent. Examples are actors that play roles we respect like scientists, doctors, soldiers or lawyers, well maybe not lawyers. We believe that they are good in the role because they are truly knowledgeable and not just acting. They are just very good at what they do and should not be listened to at all.

Theworldisnotenough on June 24, 2008 at 8:45 AM
Excellent Point. And, if I may add…in what other country in the world do the poor often suffer from morbid obesity. I suppose Will Smith believes that in Moscow, Berlin, London, and Paris he would have not had to rifle through discarded trash to find something to eat for his child. Oh, no, wait. He doesn’t.

Is the madness of the BO cult finally revealed? Did Bill and Hil give us that carefree life is great, make love not war attitude? Did Bush thrust us into a world of hate, danger and seriousness? Is that the Hope and Change we are looking for? Is it the hope that we can go back to those wonder years, the endless summer of dreams and carefree living when the world was at peace and life was beautiful? I think that that is it folks. Bush brought us terrorism, war and raising gas prices. BO will hand out free shovels so we can stick our heads in the sand and party on DUDE!

You’re probably right about that. I’ve never played. You do know I was just joking, right? I don’t like soccer, but I was mocking the pointless arguments that always start when a soccer vs. football/any other sport battle comes up. You seemed so….offended.

dumbass!
Redux encore “for the first time” LOL idiot reference as a black badge of honor by regurgitating the sewage expecting gold.
Redux “being American is bad” as the ubertard motto to make friends stateside via coersion; no wonder BHO is sifting through prisons for more votes.
Will Smith wrote that he lives his life and plots his movies by formula, the “winning” formula that extracts what people want from wherever and amalgamates (successfully or not) via Hollywood packaging. HE IS A REGIFTER! So is bobama, regifting Marx and Lenin as if he’s the easter bunny.
Hey, off topic, looking for a response to our government initiating opening an FDA office in Latin America to catch contaminated produce before it comes stateside. DUH, cut out of NAFTA since it does not benefit Americans nor does it benefit Mexican labor wage earners in Mexico. If NAFTA had required Mexico to raise wages, their citizens would not be crashing our borders. NAFTA benefits the Mexican aristocracy, the few who own the many, the few who have absolutely no sense of responsibility for their country’s population, only to retain their elitism AT THE EXPENSE OF AMERICAN CITIZENS HEALTH AND WEALTH AND AT THE EXPENSE OF THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT THAT CAN ILL AFFORD THE INCUMBRANCES FROM NAFTA.
maverick muse on June 24, 2008 at 10:09 AM
June 23, Michael Leavitt, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, announced the United States’ intention to open an office in Latin America to monitor food safety.
How the hell is NAFTA benefiting the USA? For whatever cheap shit comes in, we end up paying through the gut AND TAXES for the benefit of Mexican aristocrats. NAFTA has brought insanity to dinner.

Barack becoming president would be great for America’s image abroad and self esteem internally. It would reduce blacks’ self loathing and whites’ overcompensation of niceness and guilt. It would be amazing. But on the flipside, national security, healthcare, economy, and actual US interests would be damaged.

Politics are important to me, and I find it interesting to stay on top of what anyone of influence is doing or “saying”.
I pay someone for what I want to pay them for and sometimes pay them more for the same service due to just that. Likeability (sometimes political, social, character, personality, etc..) is sometimes a factor in who I’m drawn to for services, who I want to work with, and I make those choices daily in my personal life.
I’m always pay a little more for the landscaper that doesn’t use illegals. I support a local Christian-owned audio/video store because I’m drawn to the sales staff. The list goes on and on. Locally I notice that the city gov and citizens are overt in their support of business that supports their ideologies, multiculturalism/diversity, community projects, etc…
As far as liberal celebs (that use their influence to destroy the US like Smith as of late), some consumers will simply not be drawn to them and that will sometimes decrease not only the direct (ticket sales) but the peripheral sales, support, and their “brand”.
The few movies I watch are a choice between many and I’m not drawn toward artists that disgust me (although sometimes I’ll view their craft in spite of it). If you’ve ever worked in sales you’d realize that in most cases it’s not necessarily the product or price, but whether the client warms to the salesman or not, to close it.
nottakingsides on June 24, 2008 at 11:02 AM
It’s not about a country’s prosperity, it’s about its image. The lefty logic says that yes, America is rich, but because it plunders other countries’ wealth by force. So immigrants and refugees come to America to enjoy those riches, not because they endorse America’s actions overseas. (That’s lefty logic, not mine). Anyway, Barack is like the ultimate Corporate Communications VP – he would do amazing things for America’s brand because of all the Hopenchange poetry he so skillfully recites. People overseas love a good orator that promises them things.
AlexB on June 24, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I love America and most things about it. However, I think American actors suck big time. NONE of them can compare to the American actors from the 30’s & 40’s and certainly not any of the British actors. They leave American actors in the dust.
But I hate these leftist actors thinking they know everything. Without a script they seem to me to be very boring people with just a lot of stupid things to say. These actors are a strange mixture of outrageous egos and unbelievable insecurities. I mean they are the ones who have alcohol, drugs, and relationship problems. I mean how many end up committing suicide????
Screw them. And I don’t go to the movies and I don’t watch TV…rather read or go for a walk…or keep my house clean.

Barak Obama is not going to make Europeans feel any differently about Americans. Having worked in Europe and the Middle East, I found that America-hating is a national pasttime in some of these countries. Some, not all. Many love Americans. Even those who hate us, I believe, secretly envy us. Some have even told me so. You know the old saying…everyone is an American…they just haven’t made it here yet. Will Smith is a tool. Who knew. How sad.
Glynn on June 24, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Wow, was he channeling MObama in that clip?
jharada on June 24, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Oy. Just oy.
I like Smith’s acting. He seems a personable young man. His family is lovely. His politics….sigh.
But then again, I don’t begrudge Albert Einstein his soft-headed pacifistic pablum of a political theory, and I wouldn’t ask Woody Allen to babysit a teen-aged daughter.
I’ve learned to compartmentalize these things, and it has worked quite well for me. I recommend it. Thus can I watch the intense, highly professional performances of Tom Cruise, and keep the knowledge that he is a certifiable nut-job safely in the theater lobby.
There are, of course, exceptions. Jane Fonda, Oliver Stone, and Spike Lee, for example, will never see one thin dime of my capital (not because I feel it would Make A Point, let alone an impact, but simply because I would feel soiled afterward). Simply too far beyond the pale, and their work is not worth it anyway.
Where I struggle a bit is with the likes of Sean Penn and Kevin Spacey. Daft, sanctimonious Chavez-apologist moonbats of the first order, but outrageously talented. Generally, I come down on the side of capitalism, as an earlier commenter clarified; I pay these folks for their performances. I don’t expect them to have a clue about the world, and as long as that cluelessness doesn’t rise to the level where it intrudes on my experience of those performances, then they’ve earned their keep…And they are free to spend their earnings on large houses in which they can host other clueless people and congratulate each other on how fabulously they weather their oppression under this corrupt and imperialistic regime.
Meh.
Noocyte on June 24, 2008 at 12:28 PM
That’s why I’ve always been a fan of Robert Duvall, especially when he plays a cowboy. Duvall IS the character, he doesnt play one. His Augustus McCrae character in Lonesome Dove was outstanding.
abcurtis on June 24, 2008 at 1:34 PM
How about a bunch of ax-men with reciprocating saws cutting along the Cali-Nevada border? That way Cali can float out to sea and be used for naval gunnery practice.
abcurtis on June 24, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Speaking strictly for myself. I no longer get upset over what celebs say when it comes to denigrating America, I’ve come to expect that from Hollywood since Vietnam. I guess I still compare them to the stars from the 40’s who were democrats but supported the country in a time of war. So what if most of their movies then were propaganda? They lifted the spirits of the people. That’s when Hollywood had class. Sadly, that’s all gone now.
My mind boggles that these people who could not make a living in the real world, take everything good this country has to offer, give nothing back, then bad mouth the country consistently. Cant they just say “Thanks, America, for all the good stuff” once in a while?
As far as my plumber having an Obama sticker on his truck – that’s irrelevant. It’s a free country he can vote for who he wants and if he’s good I’ll still employ him. If on the other hand he’s in my basement taking my pay and telling me how rotten I’m treating him, that’s a whole nother story. He’s free to leave my house anytime.
I have no problem with actors being socialist democrats – it’s a free country, they can support whomever they want. But I dont have to listen to their anti-America diatribes nor do I have to pay to see another rotten movie.
abcurtis on June 24, 2008 at 1:53 PM
One other thing. I like Will Smith. I’ve enjoyed the movies I’ve seen him in. If he were in a movie that looked interesting to me, I’d wait for it on pay per view. I dont go to movies because they are too expensive, too noisy and really not all that good in the end. PPV has saved me lots of money on bad movies.
But there others like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins that I wouldnt walk across the road to see. Their anti-Americanism is only part of it.
abcurtis on June 24, 2008 at 2:00 PM
A plumber normally doesn’t have the means to speak to millions of people on TV or film. A plumber doesn’t have the same amount influence over impressionable kids, teens and brain dead liberals who are enamored over the rich and famous.
If that plumber came into my house and started spouting how horrible America is, I can assure you he would be told to shut up and do his job.
