Palin sends letter to Harry Reid: Start drilling in ANWR

posted at 8:48 pm on June 23, 2008 by Allahpundit

No, it won’t provide short-term relief, a point Palin is astute enough in her letter to concede but Maverick, to his peril, is not. But so what? The name of the game is long-term planning: Petroleum isn’t going away anytime soon so let’s get cracking on exploiting what we have as a parallel track to developing alternatives. It’s not either/or, a point McCain’s new energy ad strives to make clear.

I don’t know if she sent the letter at his behest or on her own initiative, but if you’re a charismatic young governor looking to use a hot button to raise your profile, there are worse moves you can make than this.

Does anybody even look into the things she has done as Governor? The way she’s handling the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act/Transcanada issue alone makes you wonder how competent she really is. Her handling of the Matanuska Maid Dairy also raise concerns. Even the circumstances with the birth of her son in April raise questions of her judgment.

I’m not saying she’s all bad but we really have get rid of this knee jerk reactions to her just cause some men find her attractive.

lowandslow on June 24, 2008 at 12:34 AM

Yeah, you must be pretty concerned about the birth of her son, perhaps you should picket her house or something and gain some points in your quest to be ‘Jerk of the Year’.

Anyone interested in HOW the TransCanada Pipeline is going, please let me know! I can provice links to just about anything… including Murkowski (Dad) trying to push it through while the Alaskans were saying NO!

Have some damned sense. God help you if you EVER have a child with any problems. And since you really have no clue aboutthe circumstances around the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline.. would you like some tutorial?

I would be happy to point out the issues and why she is having them!

upinak on June 24, 2008 at 12:56 AM

Do you not find it interesting that the Democommies found it quite practical and reasonable to execute a 70 year long range plan (Which is just now starting to come to complete political fruition) to take over the media and the educational system to dumb down the populace so that they could gain their ‘rightful’ place of power….

Yet; they find it impractical, undesirable and even downright impossible to see the value in accepting a plan with a 3-10 year payoff to keep the economic engine running in the nation that they want to to rule?

Uber-Communist Putin has enough brains to see that developing practical energy resources…. that also generate hard cash flow into Russia is the smart thing to do.

Heck, even President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji of Communist China are smart enough to see that relatively cheap energy drives their economic engine … to the point that they have been able to pull 200 million people out of poverty in the last 15 years.

But our Leninist-Maoist rulers in Washington can’t follow the examples set by the leaders of the countries that they would like to emulate.

LegendHasIt on June 24, 2008 at 12:58 AM

And while we’re at it upinak why don’t you tell us how Palin is going to force the oil companies to ship their gas through someone else’s pipeline.

lowandslow on June 24, 2008 at 12:59 AM

Have some damned sense. God help you if you EVER have a child with any problems. And since you really have no clue aboutthe circumstances around the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline.. would you like some tutorial?

WTF? What does having a child with problems have anything to do with this? She decided to fly eight hour from Texas to have her child in Alaska, that’s a decision she made and it worked out fine but don’t think for a minute that there isn’t legitimate concerns on that decision or that people will question it.

As for the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, I got a pretty good idea what’s going on and not all of it’s good.

lowandslow on June 24, 2008 at 12:59 AM

Low, ow about you start from the beginning since you obviously DON’T KNOW!

Frank Murkowski was elected Governor of the State in one years time started the Talks with the Oil Giants on the Natural Gas Pipeline. He invited Pedro Van Murien in (who is a total LOSER) to help with the Negotiations of the Pipeline. This went on for YEARS. How they were going to give these Oil Giants HUGE tax reliefs, only get 22.5 (originally 25 %) percent at MOST to the State of Alaska. The people were not happy about it at all. The meeting were held with so much secrecy that people startd talking. It got so bad that an ENTIRE Professional Staff walked out. Tom Irwin, Marty Rutherford, Mark Meyers (who is not the national USGS Director), and 4 others all quit due to the policies and conduct and none momvement of Frank Murkowski! These were State of Alaska employees and Most of them Directors! Trans Canada was also goingto get a HUGE slice of this pie and that is when people walked away.

Then the campains started for Governor again. Sarah Palin, Tony Knowles (already a 2 time democratic Gov who didn’t do CRAP for this State) and Frank Murkowski were the runners. As Frankand Tony both shot down Sarah, Sarah didn’t budge. She kept it Clean and didn’t name call but did point fingers at these two who have both screwed over the State.

When She was elected by a LANDSLIDE, she began revamping everything. State Ethics, Laws concerning reforms, and the Gas Pipeline issues. She brought it out into the open and began anew, which was NOT what the Oil Companies wanted. Tom Irwin and Marty Rtherford were both put back into their original Positions because they showed they cared about the Future of Alaska. They also did weekly updates on the State of Alaska website as to where they were with the bidding on the pipeline and what was going to be done. Also she didn’t hinder FBI investigations on corrupt Repulican individuals who were taking money from an Oil Sub business, known as Veco and now called Chem2Hill, when they bought them out.

The permit with F.E.R.C. was a dirty underhanded item the Oil Companies did behind her back. Since they do not want to do a Spur line and want to take this Pipeline thru ANWR. Also no Alaskan wants it to go through Canada… we would like it to stay HERE and be an American only Company or at least stay in the Nation. Trans-Canada is pushing this to go through… WHY? No one in Canada wants to say.

Does this help?

Sarah had been tested before hand and it was known she would be having a disabled Child. With her going to TX shouldn’t have mattered, except she was early.

I don’t know why you care. It isn’t your child, it is hers and she is doing a very good job with the State and her family.

As for McCain not understanding how this works, it’s because nobody hit him over the head on this topic yet. That’s how he learns. This guy needs info. smacked into him.

Upinak, you are pretty spot on, but I will point out that there is a valid justification for running the gas pipeline through Canada. They could pipe East from around Deadhorse, collect more gas from Yukon, and then pipe south to the Edmonton region, where huge gas supplies already are being produced, then connect to the existing line, which heads to midwest US. Theoretically, it would speed the process, and involve less construction of pipeline. I don’t care which method they choose, as long as we get moving.

In response to Mallard T Drake, Fox News did a one-hour special on the energy situation last weekend, which included a segment on ANWR, where they showed the comparative size of ANWR and the proposed drilling area on a map. I forget who said it, but the drilling area compared to the area of ANWR was compared to a postage stamp on a football field. They also showed pictures of the proposed drilling area, which at this time of year looks like a flat grassy area full of puddles, not exactly the scenic equivalent of the Grand Canyon.

Governor Palin is right to send a letter to Senator Reid about drilling in ANWR–it’s her state, and she knows it better than those in the Lower 48. I hope she sent a copy to Senator McCain, with another note saying this could win the election for him!

By the way, drilling in ANWR could have begun in 2001, when a bill favoring it passed the House, but it was filibustered by Senate Democrats. If that bill had passed, we’d be using that oil by now.

The Gas Pipeline has become a very bad thorn up here. When it comes to that and ANWR, Alaskans are about to tell the oil Companies to go suck a ball thru a hose. Transcanada has just back out of a 500 Million dollar State assumed deal. the State was going to put 500 million into helping and financing the pipelines start. TransCanada who was for the deal has now totally backed out. WHY? There was no reason for them too. Alaskans were putting their own money on the line to make this pipeline into Canada… and now they back out of a deal? Something Stinks! And I don’t think it is Sarah’s fault.

We have had it. And that includes myself who works in the Oil and Gas industry. They don’t want to budge when it comes to certain terms and we are tired of being screwed over by these individuals. Even smaller Oil Companies are wondering WTF the Bigger ones are doing since it is hindering the smaller one too. I am all ready for a Alaska Natural Gas Piepline, screw Canada!

What most people are waiting for now here in Alaska, is the Supreme Court Ruling on Exxon. Thought with the Supreme Court becoming the new friends of the terrorists, it makes me wonder if this is going to be a good outcome.

Actually I just didn’t see any light flip on when he answered the question. It was sidestepping, IMO. “has a future in the party”…”very popular in HER state”.

If he had said anything that could be taken as affirming her, he’d on the one hand light a fire and create huge, potentially steamrollering expectations for her. Among other things, that could lead to huge embarrassment, for him and for her, if people then began to ask, “What went wrong?” when for whatever reason she wasn’t picked. Giving the game away in any respect would also, of course, detract from the actual announcement.

Given that, according to most reporting, the famous vetting process hasn’t even moved beyond preliminaries, there is no way McCain was going to show his hand on Palin. He’s hardly looked at his cards. In the meantime, in VP-ology, the more enthusiastic the presumptive nominee sounds about someone mentioned to him, the more likely he’s just caressing that person’s base ahead of going somewhere else. BO’s lavish praise for Hillary is probably a good example. BO is such a stumblebum, he might actually make the mistake of showing his hand.

So there’s hope, Palinites, but you probably won’t have a real answer until the first week of August at the earliest.

I wish American Pie would have never come up with that term… it is over used!

upinak on June 24, 2008 at 12:42 PM

You see man, this, though certainly not original is funny due to the substitution of Governer for Mother. She’s a governer and a hottie. Can I get a little chuckle here? Anybody?
Well, I suspect that this gag survived this dissection much as the frog did. Tough room!

Later.

She’s Protestant, not Mormon.

Always someone to spoil the party…I just wanted the Mitt-wits to get excited.

right2bright on June 24, 2008 at 8:13 AM

You’re both into the Cult of Personality, specifically, Shemessianics.

“Mitt-wits,” isn’t that a Democrat/Liberal screed term? Sorta’ like, “Rethuglicans” and “Bushbots”? Same nonsense.

Governor….governor….

Shemessianics? LOL WTF is that? It isn’t even a word! Are we making things up as we go along?

upinak on June 24, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Heh, Right2bright was trying to bait Mormons. Thing is, we all already knew she wasn’t LDS–if she had, right2bright and co would have come up with something to attack her.

I don’t care if she is protestant or what her faith is–she’s a conservative. I’ve maintained for a while that I would be equally happy with either her or Romney for VP.

Vanceone on June 24, 2008 at 11:27 AM

If you weren’t so anxious to play your victim card you would have noticed I was not baiting you guys, look who got up in arms.
Remember from the beginning I supported Mitt for VP or a cabinet position (never as Pres. because he couldn’t win–and I was correct thank you), so once again your hate clouds your reason.

Palin and Jindal are the people conservatives have been looking for to return the Republican Party back to real conservative principles.

I pray that McCain names her as his running mate!

azcop on June 24, 2008 at 3:05 PM

I know Jindal mania is the rage, but I’ve got Palin mania.

Spirit of 1776 on June 23, 2008 at 9:12 PM

I like her, too, and I am starting to have little giddy daydreams about Jindal – Palin 2012, and Palin – Jindal ‘12.

The only scenario that I could stomach would require that McCain wins now with one of them, and then retires after one term. It could happen.

Jaibones on June 24, 2008 at 3:16 PM

Palin point is exactly what Florida should be thinking

Florida is more worried about money from tourism than money from oil. If an oil company screws up and does a Santa Barbara to part of the Florida coast, the economic repercussions would be huge.

Anyway, I don’t fall for this woman’s all-American, designer glasses act. She looks like a different type to me. If you put her in a room with a vertical pole and start waving dollar bills, my bet is that those glasses will come off and everyone will start having a good time.

Wow spoken like a person with little understanding.

FYI most of the beaches in Florida are seashell not sand. Easier to clean and get rid of.

And their tourist Season varies on the time of year as well.

What a defeatist!

bayam on June 24, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Ummm, isn’t Santa Barbara one of the most exclusive areas to live on the West Coast (avg home price around $650,000, Miami around $300,000)?
With coastline property selling for 10 of million of dollars, the economic repercussions would be huge alright…hugely beneficial.
You have the weirdest arguments…

Yes, you must be right. An oil spill in Florida won’t be any big deal. The news of an oil spill in FL wouldn’t hurt the state’s image or deter any foreign tourists.

Santa Barbara one of the most exclusive areas to live on the West Coast

There was an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, hence the reference.

azcop on June 24, 2008 at 3:05 PM

I pray that he doesn’t – then she’d be tainted, and I want her for 2012.

Fortunately, we can count on the fact that he’s not bright enough to appoint her.

Would it really be bad if she was VP and was quiet the whole time while in? Unlike Cheney?

I can actually see a Palin/Jindal in the future….

Which was cleaned up quickly and throughly because of what they learned from the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.

Good Lord, your arguement is becoming dimmer and dimmer.

upinak on June 24, 2008 at 5:10 PM

I live about 45 minutes from Santa Barbara. It’s beautiful and expensive. I wasn’t aware of any damage from oil. Did I miss something?
