Meet The Unimpressive?

posted at 9:39 am on June 20, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

According to Page 6 at the New York Post, two potential contenders to succeed Tim Russert at Meet the Press have not exactly used subtlety to position themselves.  Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann supposedly began plotting at Russert’s memorial to grab at the open seat, but could anyone — even Matthews and Olbermann — possibly be this clueless?

TIM Russert’s body wasn’t even cold in the ground before MSNBC anchors Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann started jockeying for his job, sources claim.

Matthews was heard loudly discussing what seemed to be his strategy for landing Russert’s “Meet the Press” show at Wednesday’s memorial reception for the NBC Washington bureau chief at the Kennedy Center in DC. After Brian Williams, Carl Bernstein, David Gergen, Barbara Walters and NBC brass eulogized their friend, Matthews huddled with an unidentified “agent type” and seemed to be plotting.

According to our spy, “Chris, with his loud voice, was going over a pitch for Tim’s job. He was saying, ‘You know, Tim’s thing was this, and my thing is that.’ It was unbelievably tacky.”…

Meanwhile, Matthews’ MSNBC cable cohort Olbermann, who was also at the memorial, is “threatening to quit if he isn’t installed as Russert’s replacement,” another insider said. “I know, it sounds ludicrous, but, then, Keith Olbermann is ludicrous.”

Color me unconvinced.  Granted, Matthews gave a singularly reprehensible performance for his colleague’s passing, but I doubt that even he could be this obnoxious.  Matthews told the Post that he had been arguing during the memorial with a friend about an upcoming speech in Gettysburg — which is, I guess, obnoxious enough for a memorial service.  He denies entirely that he “huddled” with an “agent type”.  Wouldn’t Matthews already have representation?  Why would he need to meet him at Russert’s memorial?

As for Olbermann, Page 6 didn’t place his tirade at the memorial, and it seems a little more in character for the sportscaster-cum-lunatic.  I don’t doubt that Olbermann would want MTP, but I don’t think for a moment that he’d leave his perch at MS-NBC if he didn’t get it.  Where would he go?  I don’t think NBC would hire him again if they had to do it over, and the rest of the networks wouldn’t touch him.  Maybe BBC America or Al-Jazeera might consider him, but they have even lower ratings than MS-NBC.  And despite his lunacy, I think Olbermann realizes that he’s hit the ceiling in his career as an anchorman.

So who gets MTP?  I suspect that NBC will put off that decision as long as possible.  Brian Williams will guest host this weekend, and I’d expect to see a lot of Tom Brokaw in the next few weeks.  NBC’s execs have seen enough of Hardball and Countdown to know that neither Matthews nor Olbermann could keep MTP credible.  The best choice might be to return to the panel format of MTP’s earlier years, with Williams, Brokaw, or Chuck Todd moderating, at least until Todd establishes himself further with MTP’s audience.

Update: Comments copied from the headlines entry.

Update II: Political Byline notes that Keith Olbermann named Page 6 reporter Paula Froehlich his “Worst Person in the World” for this piece last night, before its publication today:

Watch for Olbermann insisting that he’s not qualified for Russert’s job. I think we all agree on that — and I’d agree with him that this sounds like fiction.

Where the hell would this loser go? Air America? He has reached the pinnacle of his career and won’t be worth squat to any other network and the people who would have him have listening audiences of 10 people on a good day. Is he really that stupid?

petefrt on June 20, 2008 at 9:19 AM

I don’t understand. I thought that Meet the Press included interviews with people on all sides of the political spectrum.

Olbermoron would no longer be allowed to patronizingly lecture and villify opponents who are not there to defend themselves. So why would he be demanding that position?

aunursa on June 20, 2008 at 9:21 AM

If gravitas is eight letters, they’re about seven letters short.”

The fact that they are good enough for cable is a sign of NBC’s lack of “gravitas” as a company. They are represented by these two guys and they are both hacks.

Gravitas? Well, one is rather grave and the other is an ass.

EJDolbow on June 20, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Interesting that Russert saw Chuck Todd as his successor. NBC could do a LOT worse than him. He’s not a big name now, but neither was Russert in 1992. From what I’ve seen of him he actually leans somewhat conservative.

WisCon on June 20, 2008 at 9:42 AM

This might be only wishful thinking on my part but really don’t see how MSNBC can keep Olbermann there for much longer. Allah’s linked to people from Air America and a liberal columnist (I don’t remember the name) mocking him. That’s not a good sign when you got people on your team saying “Hey, you are too way over the top.”

terryannonline on June 20, 2008 at 9:43 AM

How about Juan Williams? Would he leave PBS?

Russert was good, and tough, because he had the political experience and insight to cover politics. He had a law degree. Brian Williams has some actual political experience, but less (and he was an intern in the Carter years), and Brokaw has none.

malan89 on June 20, 2008 at 9:53 AM

My point being that Russert was not just another pretty-faced news anchor with a liberal arts degree. He did his homework and knew what he talking about.

Nothing against liberal arts degrees; I have one.

Just as I predicted. They let this idiot get out of control and I hope they get what they deserve.

Either Olbermann or Sissy would doom MTP.

Mort Kondracke? He’s a closet socialist. [Even though I think Fred Barnes is the better half of the Beltway Boys.]

Sir Napsalot on June 20, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Oh please please please let it be Olberman. It would be so great to see him have to talk to someone who might disagree with him.

Oh, wait, that is exactly why he won’t get the job, he might have to talk with someone who had an “R” after their name. See, the list.

infidel2 on June 20, 2008 at 9:58 AM

Newt Gingrich probably has the intellect and knowledge to do it, although he probably wouldn’t want it and NBC would never consider him.

Karl Rove could probably do it. Paul Gigot?

From the Post:

Russert himself wanted Chuck Todd, the NBC News political director he hired, to succeed him, said one source, who added that MSNBC hosts don’t stand a chance of landing “Meet the Press.” The insider said, “They’re cable. They’re far too partisan. They have no gravitas. If gravitas is eight letters, they’re about seven letters short.”

While we’re counting letters in “gravitas”, where does that leave Obama?

RBMN on June 20, 2008 at 10:06 AM

To report the facts, and to be fair to Olberdouche, I caught the “worst person in the world” segment last night and he awarded that to Page Six, saying he was “unqualified” to succeed Tim Russert and had no intention of desiring that. Now, as far as Chrissie goes…..

Brit Hume would be my choice, he’s ‘old-school’. But I doubt NBC will see it that way.

Hume was the first candidate to enter my mind as Russert’s replacement.

Barring that, a talented but unknown local guy might be a good choice…definitely better than Matthews or Olbermann.

Perhaps they should let Matthews and Olbermann share the 8pm CST timeslot to run head-to-head with Hannity & Colmes. It can be a debate show feating a moronic liberal, and an idiotic liberal. All six viewers would feel equally represented.

ynot4tony2 on June 20, 2008 at 10:08 AM

thekingtut on June 20, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Keith Olbermann went ape sh*t last night over the Page 6 article. It didn’t take long for Keith Olbermann to name Page 6, Ruper Murdoch and The Sun the Worst Person in the World for the rant he put on display for the Daily Kos losers. Keith Olbermann is the one who needs to shut the hell up!

And this sounds sooooo much like the ever-humble Olbermann, who fancies himself the second coming of Murrow.

Nah…sounds more like false humility as Olbermann enters CYA mode.

ynot4tony2 on June 20, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Analysis by Ed seems right to me. Olberdouche – Meet the depressed.

kirkill on June 20, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Chuck Todd seems like he might make a good fit, though he certainly isn’t yet anywhere near Tim’s caliber.

If MSNBC has the proper instincts, it might reach out and steal Gwen Ifill. Watch her on PBS’s The News Hour with Jim Lehrer if you haven’t seen her yet. She’s got heaps of credibility IMO, and would just need to up her intensity quotient a tad.

This is an opportunity for MSNBC to redeem itself for Pissy Chrissy and Olby-wan-baloney. Surely they’ve already attracted as much of the hard left as there is to be had. To walk away from all the intelligent folk in their audience who actually have a clue about politics by installing a Chrissy or worse, invites disaster by way of a new show from a competitor stepping in and eating their lunch.

notta_dhimmi on June 20, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Olbermann would be perfect for MTP. It would expose him to a whole new audience of millions of people he has yet to alienate.

wccawa on June 20, 2008 at 10:31 AM

Not that any of this really matters. NBC long ago squandered their brand crediblity. The very existance of Olbermann is testament to that. (They actually put this guy on their NFL show? How freaking silly did Costas and Tiki feel sitting in the dark with that ass? Madness!) I wouldn’t trust NBC news to tell me a flood was coming if I was standing in ankle deep water.

mugged on June 20, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Brit Hume would be ideal for the job, but MSM viewers have grown too accustomed to having the news delivered by yellow dog Democrats to tolerate it being delivered by a conservative.

Matthews, Olby, and David Gregory are not serious journalists – they are egoccentric showmen and banty roosters.

NBC should look outside the network to fill this position.

molonlabe28 on June 20, 2008 at 10:37 AM

I doubt that even he could be this obnoxious.

You must not watch him regularly Ed. I have no problem whatsoever believing every world of this. In fact, it’s exactly what I’d expect.

TheBigOldDog on June 20, 2008 at 10:40 AM

I have never seen MTP that I can recall. Maybe one clip of it is played on other news shows each week. It boils down to maybe fifteen seconds of punditspeak worth even thinking about, and all this ado?

Akzed on June 20, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Oh thats being a journalist Bathtub boy, by marking fun of all Australians. What would he say/do if Shep made fun of Japanese people or Mexicans. Olberdouche would be in an uproar, making them worst person of the year, and then having that vein in his head expload.

“No agent would bring up the topic”

Ummm they are agents Keith, yes they would bring it up.

and Rupert isn’t qualified for his job? He created these companies, he made billions, he gave jobs to billions, what have you done Olby? You’ve been fired as a shitty sports reporter and you change to MSNBC to spew hate and stupidity.

Rbastid on June 20, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Years ago Matthews was much more even handed. He had no problem challenging both sides equally hard. He was actually pretty good. He asked the logical, tough questions and truly didn’t allow people to spin. Then he went completely off the deep end and jumped in the tank. What a short sighted fool. If he had continued to play it straight he would have been in the perfect position to host MTP today.

TheBigOldDog on June 20, 2008 at 10:50 AM

The thrill that ran up Matthews leg was seeing Mr. Russert being put to rest.

it’s exactly what I’d expect.

TheBigOldDog on June 20, 2008 at 10:40 AM

My sentiments exactly.

right2bright on June 20, 2008 at 10:52 AM

What’s funny about Matthews is that despite having “jumped in the tank”, from what I’ve read on HuffPo, they still despise him. Similar to Scott McClellan, now nobody likes you!

Marcus on June 20, 2008 at 10:55 AM

They should hire Ed Morrissey.

drjohn on June 20, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Chris Matthews will get the job. I’m convinced. And this move will put FOXNEWS over the top in ratings. Way over the top. The new king of the Sunday morning shows will be Chris Wallace.

Seixon on June 20, 2008 at 11:00 AM

You’re attributing a degree of rationality and self-awareness to Olbermann that I don’t think he has.

irishspy on June 20, 2008 at 11:13 AM

The more and more coverage NBC gave to everyone but the janitor sharing memeories of Russert the stranger it seemed. But it could have been management’s way of sending a strong message Matthews and Olberman that they aren’t up to it.
As far to the left as NBC has gone, I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t considering Amy Goodman and Terry Gross of NPR. NBC is becoming almost as doctrinaire and one sided as NPR.

snaggletoothie on June 20, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Olberman is too much of a coward to do MTP. It would require him to actually debate people with differing opinions, as opposed to chatting with people who agree with him. Matthews will debate people, but he’s too much of a partisan hack.

I agree that MTP under Olbermann would require a name change. How about Miss the Point?

Jim Treacher on June 20, 2008 at 11:38 AM

I think they will either give it to Chuck Todd or Gwen Ifill. Todd would be the best choice, some people throughout the internets are concerned that he is too concerned with the politics county by county and not good with the higher level analysis, but I only think that has been the case because that has been his job and he would adapt if given the Meet the Press slot. He was good with CSPAN, he’s been good with NBC, and he makes the most sense for Meet the Press. His wife is usually active with Dems but he, more than anyone I have seen on TV, does not hesitate to disclose that fact to his audience.

David Gregory would be a disaster, moreso than Olbermann or Mathews, even though I think Mathews would not be a bad choice. The people at Huffpo are just as mean to him as the people here at Hotair.

I want Tucker to take the spot.
