McClellan under oath: I Dunno

Well, I’m sure Congress feels like they accomplished something today with their interrogation of former White House press secretary Scott McClellan.  After making a series of inflated allegations in his memoirs, What Happened, he told Congress that he really doesn’t know what happened — at least not in l’affaire Plame.  When asked whether President George Bush knew about any effort to leak Valerie Plame’s identity to the press, he said Bush didn’t know about it — and McClellan doesn’t know anything about anybody else’s efforts, either (via The Anchoress):

U.S. President George W. Bush did not know about a White House effort to leak the identity of a CIA agent but tried to protect staffers who were involved in one of the biggest scandals of his administration, former Bush spokesman Scott McClellan told Congress on Friday.

McClellan said he did not think Bush was involved in a 2003 effort to blow the cover of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, whose husband had accused the administration of twisting intelligence to justify the Iraq war. …

Vice President Dick Cheney’s involvement in the leak might have been greater, McClellan said.

“I do not think the president in any way had knowledge about it,” McClellan told lawmakers. “In terms of the vice president, I do not know. There is a lot of suspicion there.”

McClellan said that Bush ordered him to tell the press that Karl Rove and Scooter Libby didn’t have anything to do with the leaks, through the chief of staff at the White House.  However, that might be because Bush believed that they didn’t.  If Bush didn’t know about the supposed effort to leak Plame’s identity, then it stands to reason that he believed the assurances of both men that they didn’t have anything to do with it.  And since neither of them had talked with Robert Novak, in whose column the leak occurred, that may well have been the case — at least as far as Bush was concerned.

Neither does he have any evidence of Cheney’s supposed involvement.  “There is a lot of suspicion there” can describe just about every crackpot theory ever floated.  There’s a lot of suspicion that George Bush planted bombs in the World Trade Center so they would collapse when remote-controlled jumbo aircraft hit the buildings, just as he spirited away the passengers and crew on the four flights so he could take them to a remote island and turn them into zombies.  The suspicion doesn’t make it true.  Usually that takes evidence, and apparently McClellan has none.

Still, Congress got to waste yet another day on yet another hearing into the Bush administration, rather than do something useful like ending the moratorium on off-shore drilling or looking into Countrywide’s sweetheart deals for Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd, and Kent Dorgan.  Gossip trumps policy once again.

.

Novak phoned Rove (after earlier getting his initial leak from Armitage) who reportedly replied, “I heard that too” re Wilson wife being in the CIA after Novak broached the topic.

Calling it a leak gives it more credit than it is due. Madame Plame wasn’t covert, and had no problem doing a cover story for Vanity Faire magazine. Doesn’t seem to me like she was that interested in keeping her identity anonymous.

…Or confirm some judges whose nominations have been hanging fire, or fill in those empty positions on the FEC…
The list goes on.

This dolt, McClellan, is obviously not too bright. Such a dim wit, in fact, that I have to blame the process and people who hired him in the first place.

Today on the radio I heard {again} that Bush administration officials had leaked this silly woman’s name. It is not hard to say the man’s name: Armitage. Not Libby or Rove or Bush, but Armitage. and who cares anway?

I think Plame should have been fired for sending her drunken bum of a husband out to play James Bond in the first damn place. it is no wonder we had planes flying into buildings if that kind of incompetence is par for the course at the CYA.

Terrye on June 20, 2008 at 7:59 PM

I still don’t know understand the White House kept him out of the loop on major policy decisions.

It’s clear he could have been a terrific addition to the process.

Friggin’ Forrest Gump would’ve been a better choice.

“I do not think the president in any way had knowledge about it,” McClellan told lawmakers. “In terms of the vice president, I do not know. There is a lot of suspicion there.”

Asked about McClellan’s testimony, the current White House Deputy Spokesman Tony Fratto said McClellan has probably already told everyone everything he doesn’t know, so Fratto does not think anyone should expect him to say anything new.

Oh Snap.

You know, if only there was a special prosecutor who could look into the whole Plame affair. Might I suggest someone name Patrick Fitzgerald to do it?

Dave Rywall on June 20, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Scotty can change his personal opinion all he wants.

However, if someone who worked in the White House would like to make an allegation of impropriety, it would be nice if he could point to something resembling a shred of evidence.

Apparently, he can’t. He’s just cashing in on the left’s hatred of Bush by telling them what they want to hear. When questioned under oath, he can’t perjure himself and has to look stupid (I dunno).

cs89 on June 20, 2008 at 9:03 PM

I saw about two minutes of his shlock when it was going down this morning, and McClellan was taking full advantage of the time to blatantly shill his book. I didn’t realize that was now a Congressional function, but at this point I suppose nothing surprises me.

Arguably the worst thing about the shill was the way he simultaneously tried to spin in the notion that he was victimized by the press over its contents. Every third word was either “I,” “my,” or “me.” It was downright Clintonian.

Why is this story still making headlines. The proof that it was Armitage has been proven many times over. Is the drive-by media and their cohorts in the capitol really this desperate? The only reason I could fathom is that they believe their own lies. Doesn’t surprise me.

IntheNet on June 20, 2008 at 7:41 PM

I disagree. Scotty isn’t so much a traitor as he is an idiot who sold whatever was left of his integrity to Soros, for thirty pieces of silver, and 15 minutes of fame on the talk show circuit.

To be a real traitor, you have to render some kind of aid and comfort to the enemy.

Names like Jay Rockefeller, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama come to mind.

Rockefeller: meeting with Saddam and broadcasting our invasion intentions, early 2003;

Pelosi: meeting with the Dorktator in 2006 and undermining US foreign policy in the region (as Syria had been identified at that time as being a major conduit of men and materiel assisting the insurgency in Iraq);

Reid: his comments in the media, saying that we cannot hope to win the war in Iraq, which told the enemy that if they just hunker down and hold on a little while longer, we will leave, and they will then have free run of the place – also undermining US foreign policy in the region; and

Obama: undermining the CinC at a time of major strategy change in the Iraq conflict by pushing for withdrawal – having the same effect on friends and foes as Reid.

Actions like this are old hat for the Democrats, sadly. The Lion of the Senate, Kennedy (D-Chivas), secretly met with the Soviets at the height of the Cold War, Kerry met with the Sandinistas, and the Boland Amendment was specifically written by the Dems to hamstring Reagan’s “rollback” strategy for winning the Cold War.

The Dems care only for themselves, at the expense of anyone else, IMHO.

wepeople on June 20, 2008 at 9:52 PM

You guys are just pissed because little Scotty changed his mind about W.

McClellan (from his book):
I still like and admire George W. Bush. I consider him a fundamentally decent person, and I do not believe he or his White House deliberately or consciously sought to deceive the American people.

Most of McClellan’s criticism is directed, as far as I can tell since he gives no specific instances or details, at the men and women around the President who, he claims, got caught up in the Washington political game.

To be sure, he criticizes Bush for being caught up in the game too; but he clearly states that he thinks Bush is a decent and honorable person who never deceived the public about Iraq.

It’s a little more complex picture than just saying McClellan “changed his mind” about Bush.

I watched the last 4/5 of McClellan testifying before the house judiciary committee on C-Span. The leak of Valerie Plame’s identity wasn’t the only topic discussed. There were many topics. Truth seekers can find the transcripts or video on the web and not just take the biased opinion here. The rest of you that don’t mind being mislead will stick your heads in the sand as usual. Scotty was under oath when he testified. If he lied, I’m sure the republicans on the committee would bring perjury charges against him. Email those reps with the lies in his testimony. Bring it on!

Because, in a sort of inverse way, that’s a thread-winner in anyone’s book.

I mean, even on Teh Intarwebs, you don’t see that kind of industrial-grade mental toxic waste every day.

Blah blah no points blah blah mercy on your soul blah blah.

Merovign on June 21, 2008 at 4:36 AM

Scott McClellan sold his soul to the highest bidder. Scott McClellan will soon have his meeting with Cindy Sheehan in the Liberal graveyard where all used up soulless creatures get tossed.

What’s more important with this story is the simple fact that Congress continues to show Americans their complete ineptness with regards to priorities. Going after the Bush administration takes priority over all other issues facing America. I just paid $103 to fill up my car, and Congress moves Scott McClellan (with his “no facts”) to the front of the priority list. I just paid $107 for (2) bags of groceries last night, and Congress moves Scott McClellan to Top-priority status.

I’m wondering, what has Congress actually accomplished in the way of solving our nations top problems over the past 20-30 years? I work with a guy (56 years old) that has never voted Republican in his life. I wouldn’t call this man a Liberal, but he is life long Democrat of the JFK mold. While discussing this very topic, this Democrat told me that his disgust with his own parties “all talk and no action” has led him to a decision to sit out this election in November. I asked him what he considers to be our nations top issues; he said “protecting American jobs & markets, protecting our borders, becoming energy independent while inventing alternative clean energy, social security, and a list of other pure Dem issues that I won’t bother you with.” His thoughts and concerns were really not that far from mine; therefore, I asked him if he felt this Democrat controlled Congress was doing the job Americans need from them. He answered “no”, they are acting just like the Republicans did for the past decade, focused on anything but solving the most important issues facing Americans.

One thing we all should agree on, Congress is not doing the work of the people. Congress critters live in their own world and have no idea of what our world looks like. I’m really getting to hate these people!
