Replete, believe it or not, with its own Latin motto. Here’s the obligatory close-up. Anyone want to take a wild guess at what “Vero Possumus” means?
I’d love to hammer him for being presumptuous, but….
Barack finally has his bounce. For weeks many political experts and pollsters have been wondering why the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain had stayed so tight, even after the Illinois senator wrested the nomination from Hillary Clinton… A new NEWSWEEK Poll shows that he has a substantial double-digit lead, 51 percent to 36 percent, over McCain among registered voters nationwide…
Most other national polls have shown Obama with a 4 to 5 point lead over McCain so far. Random statistical error can explain some of the difference in poll results. The NEWSWEEK survey of 1,010 adults nationwide on June 18 and 19, 2008, has a margin of error of 4 points. But the latest evidence of his gaining ground goes well beyond that margin…
In the new poll, registered Democrats and Democratic leaners who supported Clinton during the primaries now favor Obama over McCain by 69 percent to 18 percent. In last month’s survey, Clinton supporters backed the Illinois senator by a significantly smaller margin, 53 percent to 34 percent.
Actually, it’s not terribly worrisome. Granted, the numbers about Hillary supporters coming home to the party are in line with the Fox News poll from yesterday, but like JWF says, compare the samples: 42/35/16 D/R/I for Fox versus 38/23/35 for Newsweek. We’ll treat it as an outlier, especially considering the source. Exit question: Can we treat this one as an outlier too?
Update: Silly Standard. The Messiah is above the law of man.

I hope that we all understand that the gushing and swooning over Obama is just beginning. We ain’t seen nothing yet.
In addition, he will keep saying things like “this is the moment the oceans stopped rising” and many other ridiculous over the top things and NO ONE will call him out on it except the right leaning bloggers and Christoper Hitchens. That’s it. Ever. Get used to it.
It’s going to be a LOOONNNGGG political season and we on the right will be gnashing our teeth over the coverage.

You take a lot of chances with something like that (expect McCain to follow soon). Every element of the symbol means something.
Only two stars? (DC and Chicago?) Where is the snake in the beak? (enemies rejoice)
“E Pluribus Unum” not good enough for you? What does that tell you?
Expect a new round lapel pin in the future.

Heh, just heh.

hmmm, interesting design choices:
no red, just blue and white. that red was bitter and clingy anyways.
the replacement of “e pluribus unum” is an odd choice. e pluribus unum assumes that the people are in control; “yes we can” implies obedient followers.
That’s my analysis. Enjoy!

If McCain wants his own latin muses, he can master the Gradus at Parnassum on the campaign trail.
maverick muse on June 20, 2008 at 6:46 PM
What’s missing that is on the original presidential seal:
1) The Obama eagle doesn’t appear to be a bald eagle. Could be any eagle, common in European coats of arms.
2) Ribbon in original seal that contains the motto in latin: “out of many one” is gone, replaced with, in latin, “yes we can” in words above the Obama eagle
3) The presidential eagle is clutching an olive branch (with 13 olives and 13 leaves). The Obama eagle is clutching a branch with a lot of leaves (many more than 13) and no apparent olives.
4) Missing from the Obama symbol is A shield is in front of the eagle; the shield has 13 red and white stripes (representing the original 13 colonies) with a blue bar above it (it symbolizes the uniting of the 13 colonies and represents congress).
5) Missing from the Obama seal: Above the eagle are 13 white clouds, 13 white stars, and many tiny stars. 50 white stars surround the eagle in a circle (on a deep blue field). The words, “Seal of the President of the United States” surround the seal (on a tan field).

Stop viciously attacking me, Ent!
But seriously:
A McCain presidency, while being undeniably better in the short run, would be worse in the long run.
In the short run, he wouldn’t raise taxes quite as much to fight the global warming hoax as Bambi.
He might not roll out quite as lavish a red carpet to quite as many illegals quite as fast as Bambi. Might.
He might not penalize the energy producers quite as much as Bambi.
His foreign policy will probably be better than Bambi’s.
But in the long run, who will get blamed for massive global warming taxes? The President and his party. Who will get blamed for giving amnesty to tens of millions of illegals? The President and his party.
I’d rather the President and the party that gets the blame be Bambi and the Democrats.
If the country can’t afford 4-8 years of Bambi, it can even less afford 15-20 years of Republicans in the wilderness being punished for a McCain presidency.
misterpeasea on June 20, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Gallup tracking has Obama at 46, McCain at 44. I hate polls. I am also getting tired of this campaign already. It just goes on and on and on.
Terrye on June 20, 2008 at 7:04 PM
misterpeasea:
What makes you think Republicans would be punished? After all you keep telling us that McCain isn’t one. I see you are working hard at justifying disloyalty.
The people you really need to punish are all those horrid evil bad people posing as Republicans who locked all the Real Republicans in a closet and wouldn’t let them vote.
But, no worry, the conservatives will go the way of the dinosaur. They will fade away, blaming Bush, blaming McCain blaming blaming blaming……..Because once Barack is president and everyone starts getting free stuff and the oil industry is nationalized and gasoline is subsidized the American people won’t want you anymore. But what do you care?

Carter only had four years and we are paying a mighty heavy price for that 28 years later.
Limerick on June 20, 2008 at 7:21 PM
If the Carter administration is any lesson, an Obama administration will probably bring people over to the conservative side faster than anything else. I don’t think Reagan would have won had Carter not spent four years giving the public a lesson in applied idiot Democrat principles.
After four years of high taxes, weak foreign policy, and economic illiteracy from Obama, I think people will line up for a conservative candidate.
BTW, I’m certainly not hoping that Obama wins. I’ll vote for McCain, but with zero enthusiasm.

Our problem with the law in this country is not that the violators don’t care, it’s that the authorities don’t. We have selective enforcement depending upon the identity of the individual/group involved.
Drudge links to some conservative preacher urging his congregation to vote for McCain. He’s likely to get his a** handed to him by the IRS. Obama’s church, or Pfleger’s, not so much.
JiangxiDad on June 20, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Well, gee, maybe the fact that he wears a scarlet letter “R” after his name? The fact that the media and the public identify him as a Republican? Oh, and Terrye? When have I ever said McCain isn’t a Republican? He’s a 100% blue-blooded Rockefeller Republican.
Oh my. The ironicalness of a McCain supporter talking about loyalty. But I don’t even recall taking a loyalty oath.
And besides, Terrye, as I’m sure you know: We’re All Mavericks Now. Or is Mav the only one who can be a maverick? Mavericity in others isn’t allowed?
You seem to be conflating “Republican” and “conservative.” And I’m certain you know the story of the Republican primary, so I won’t rehash it for you again. Suffice it to say that when there was any competition, McCain failed to get even a bare majority of the votes of Republicans, much less conservatives.
Aren’t you leaving out the part where McCain, uhh, I mean, Bambi, legalizes anywhere from 20 million to 100 million socialists?
misterpeasea on June 20, 2008 at 7:59 PM
Well, some of us might… ;-)
But this, this, thing that Obama has done… that he has presumed to take from us, for himself, one of America’s symbols and use it for his own personal aggrandizement and political gain… this makes me mad and it makes me sick.
How dare he? That’s not some little graphic design element that some self-appointed Messiah can just come along and appropriate to make himself look more important than he is… Obama cannot be allowed to away with this. That symbol does not belong to him.
