Obama’s first general election ad: “Country I Love”

Totally generic, which is the whole point. He’s walking an image tightrope between exoticism and elitism; on the other side waits the middle class. Don’t look down, Messiah!

This’ll be airing in no fewer than 18 states. And why not? Sky’s the limit.

By the way, I am so sick of this “man” that I refuse to watch it.

Obama’s first general election ad: “Country I Love” to hate.

TheBigOldDog on June 19, 2008 at 12:45 PM

I know it won’t air in my State! HAHAHAHHAHA!

upinak on June 19, 2008 at 12:46 PM

man, I don’t even want to be in the same STATE as Chris Matthew’s leg after that!

kirkill on June 19, 2008 at 12:47 PM

The country I love

He’s thrown so many of his loved ones under the bus, I’ll bet we’re next.

jgapinoy on June 19, 2008 at 12:47 PM

WOW he talk about his racist Grandmother and her values she taught him. SO does that values include hating Blacks BO???

The bus that rolled over America.

My collie says:

Monster trucks aside, isn’t this getting a bit ridiculous?

CyberCipher on June 19, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Actually, that was pretty damned good.

A deep and abiding faith in this country I love…( and plan to “remake.”)

Dirthead on June 19, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Right… “The country I love, and my buddy Bill Ayers bombed loves, and the country my pastor curses loves, and the country my wife says is mean and she’s never been proud of loves…

Akzed on June 19, 2008 at 12:54 PM

I guess he is undergoing the great make-over like his wife.
I guess he will be upgrading to a larger flag lapel pin now.
I guess he will be humming the Star Spangled Banner out his butt now.
But alas, McCain is no different when it comes to pandering to the other side.

I think this election will come down to one thing; fuel prices, and related to that, drilling oil in the USA and building some refineries and nuclear power plants. IF McCain was smart, and he appears to be moving this way, he will accentuate his platform on making domestic energy reform and cut the ties with Venezuela and Saudi oil. Hell, shouldn’t we “borrow” some Iraqi oil since we paid for their freedom with blood? Isn’t that the least we should get for our soldiers’ sacrifice? The DEMOcrats have been harping for five years about how we invaded Iraq for oil anyway. Why not tap into it?

The smart candidate will see that it is not just about fuel prices but it is about American pride and survival. Why not pump our oil dollars into our own nation? Why not benefit from our natural resources and quit sending our money to those fickers who want to kill us? Bush is a great man and has done some great things. Independence from foreign oil is not one of them. McCain would sweep in November if he follows the nation and really drives this energy issue. We all now Obama is not interested in this aspect of our country. Of course, he many flip-flop any moment.

“Can’t I just finish my waffle?”

carbon_footprint on June 19, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Ah, we’re back to, “Look how much of a savior I was being a community organizer!”. Granted even that didn’t yield many successes and former co-workers say he inflates what he actually did, but he thinks he’s grand for it.

amerpundit on June 19, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Kinda pathetic when a presidential candidate has to sell the electorate on the idea that he actually loves his country.

thirteen28 on June 19, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Yep. Schmaltzy patriotism has never worked before.

Despite the predictable ire, this ad is innocuous & charming enough to sway the sheeple. Job well done.

LimeyGeek on June 19, 2008 at 12:57 PM

The fine print is awfully small, but are the years of the first two of his three legislative accomplishments 1997 and 2000? The last appears to be 2008.

rw on June 19, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Obama was a community organizer? I love the way the libs change terminology to take the edge of the real name. He was a political activist and agitator.

carbon_footprint on June 19, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Lofty.

I think the add mis-spoke about his goal of adding more Americans to welfare rolls.

Irenaeus on June 19, 2008 at 1:03 PM

Country I Love:

As soon as I CHANGE it, and we start caring for the sick, and providing jobs to the jobless, and heal the Earth, and stop the oceans from rising, etc.

Liberals don’t love America, they love what they want America to be.

misterpeasea on June 19, 2008 at 1:04 PM

I’d love my country even more if it canned this worthless piece of shite.

TexasJew on June 19, 2008 at 1:06 PM

So, does this mean he doesn’t embrace Afrocentrism any more? When did that stop? When he stopped loving Wright or after he clinched the nomination and needed a different look?

a capella on June 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Obama: the Afro-Marxist.

carbon_footprint on June 19, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Obama heartland ad take one, “I was just speaking with my pastor about Goddamn AmeriKKK and the fact that black men fighting each other is fighting the wrong enemy…” Director, “Cut! Sorry Barry…wrong teleprompter…” Michelle, “Barry, I thought is was right on! So reminiscent of Malcom X.”

Nozzle on June 19, 2008 at 1:09 PM

Did you notice how many white folks were on display in this ad?

And NO blacks? Especially not mean scary wifey.

But oh yeah besides “Grandma, typical white person” there was also another white granny accepting him whole heartedly. And lots of other older whites. And white military vets. I am very reassured by this commercial.

pseudonominus on June 19, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Welfare to work? Cutting taxes? Value of hard work? Strong family values?

Welcome to the Republican Party, Barry!

Rhinoboy on June 19, 2008 at 1:12 PM

What a load of horse dung.

Why is it besides Barack, these like 2 African American people in the whole video, and its in a still photo.

He starts off the piece with such a huge string of lies, its kinda sad. Wonder if I can cross cut this with him saying one thing and the truth of things he said/did in another.

Rbastid on June 19, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Effective Ad. We got our work cut out for us this year. Who’s our candidate again? Oh sh*t… Yup we’re screwed (either way).

Zetterson on June 19, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Have you noticed that the photo accompanying this story (the snippet of Obama sitting in front of that white-paned window with the garden in the back) looks strikingly similar to the ad for Ned Lamont in Connecticut where the Big Kos himself comes running in?

Outlander on June 19, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Uh…uh…uh…uh…Bullshit!

Cicero43 on June 19, 2008 at 1:18 PM

The bitterness in that last line is too funny to me. I can picture you Republicans aw-shucksing yourselves as you realize Obama is going to raise more money than God in the general election.

Nonfactor on June 19, 2008 at 1:22 PM

The only political ad I’ve seen on TV is the one touting McCain as a fighter against Global Warming for the past five years.

It’s like Bizarro World or something.

Rhinoboy on June 19, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Oh wow, it’s not an outlier; probably should’ve read these other comments. Funny.

Very, very good ad. I liked it, and I won’t vote for the man at gunpoint. Which is why trashing him personally won’t work.

Wait…I can make out a cross in the window panes in the backround…

JetBoy on June 19, 2008 at 1:27 PM

Did he film that in Ned Lamont’s house? It looks like the ad where the Kos Kidz coming running in. That ad needs more happy moonbats.

BrianBoru on June 19, 2008 at 1:31 PM

What this ad needs? You guessed it, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

Can someone recut this ad but put Triumph in right after Barry says,

“Country I Love”

Have Triump pop up and say, “To poop on!”

Hi-freakin’-larious.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM

Too bad he doesn’t believe a word of what he was saying in that commercial. This is lipstick on a pig, people! I am afraid I am going to have to activate the willing suspension of disbelief. It was a niiiiice sweet commercial though.

Is there anyone Black in the country he loves! I sure didn’t see any. Maybe it was filmed in Iceland!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 19, 2008 at 2:03 PM

He loves the country and all the people. Smiling and sweet until he gets into office. The mask comes off and the pain begins as he attempts to bend and mold the people and country into his idea of a perfect society. Scary guy. Scarier wife.

UnEasyRider on June 19, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 19, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Original thought alert. Something just strikes me as conniving and ever-so subtly racist in seeing so many Republicans wishing to see more black people in an ad for someone they don’t want to win the election.

Nonfactor on June 19, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Hey, wasn’t that shot in Ned Lamont’s house? I was hoping to see markos come flying in.

swami on June 19, 2008 at 2:18 PM

It will be an effective ad, for the same reason his speeches are effect as were those of Ronald Regan.

Unfortunately in Obama’s case, right smack in the middle of it is that famous Obama Pivot where he starts helping people.

The Republicans need to explain to voters that this election will be a decision between the philosophies of the political left and political right. And they need to explain why choosing the conservative side is the better choice.

Well, there is always hope.

rockhauler on June 19, 2008 at 2:18 PM

He’ll stop loving his country on November 5 if McCain wins. Just ask Michelle.

Steve Z on June 19, 2008 at 2:19 PM

That was rather reminiscent of similar personal experiences where looking me in the eyes and expressing “love” was just a means to an end and not actually intended to be the Webster’s definition of love. I don’t think it’s love that Obama has on his mind for our country.

Texas Gal on June 19, 2008 at 2:19 PM

The ad is missong one thing. “elect me and help me change the country I love”

My impression exactly. Till I just about spewed across the room with his cut taxes claim. . .

And I guess it is ok to claim credit for doing something besides voting ‘present’, even if it wasn’t your legislation, and it really doesn’t do what you’re claiming anyway. . .

Dave Rywall on June 19, 2008 at 3:39 PM

Yeah, that’s so off-the-wall, it’s ridiculous.

After all, his buddy Bill Ayers loves America.

And his pastor Jerry Wright loves America. And his other pastor Otis Moss loves America. And his priest Michael Pfleger loves America.

And his wife Faline loves America.

And his political party loves America.

Of course he loves America.

It’s just that, when he’s elected President, America will finally start caring for the sick, and providing jobs to the jobless, and healing the Earth, and ending the rise of the oceans.

misterpeasea on June 19, 2008 at 3:58 PM

So Obama thinks being a community organizer creates more value than a job on Wall Street? Is his socialist bias really that deep and blind? How many jobs did he create being a community organizer? What wealth did he create there?

And if he’s such a patriot, why is he hanging around with traitors like his pastor and his buddy, the Weatherman terrorist who regrets not bombing more Americans?

Tantor on June 19, 2008 at 4:23 PM

“I love my country. No really, I do. My wife is ashamed of it, my buddy dances on the flag in an alley, my pastor curses it, I met with Hizzbollah reps in Michigan the other day, but I love my country.”

Akzed on June 19, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Pretty good ad from just a marketing standpoint. It will work well on the American Idol(Idle)set. He comes across as likable.

Course it is a complete lie made up of: 40% obfuscation, 30% half truth, and 30% todo poopoo del toro.

But If I was as ignorant as 2/3s of the electorate, I’d vote for him just based on this ad, compared to the very best ad I’ve ever seen (or could even imagine) coming from the camp of his opponent.

I passed up Wall Street jobs so I could go to Chicago and learn dirty politics from the best and dirtiest politicians anywhere. They taught me how to run a campaign with no one else on the ticket, and to run a campaign based on an image with no substance.

Most importantly, they taught me how to run a campaign that disguises my radical leftist background and philosophy from the stupid blue collar Democrats that I need to win.

Nonfactor, before you showed up today, on the night he barely clenched the nomination, when he pulled his whit granny out from under the bus, I commented that he’ll be completely white by November. The metamorphosis began that night and will continue until Nov. because he’s already got you in the bag.

Jeffrey Katzenberg said about Obama a few days ago, while wetting himself with a white and viscous substance on the red carpet, “The best thing that happened to us in a long time. The only thing we have to worry about now is what to wear at the innauguration”.

“Sit down Jeff. I’ll tell you a thing or two about inevitability” ~ ~ Hillary

if I have the honor of taking the oath of office it will be with a deep and abiding faith in the country I love

Wonder if he is referring to America?

I’m convinced… no wait, I’m not impressed… wait… very impressed but not quite convinced.. who am I kidding, he’s half black, I’m only voting for the white, guilty half not the proud African half. Let’s recap…

2Tru2Tru on June 20, 2008 at 12:13 AM

Nonfactor:

I’m writing that its odd there are no Blacks in the ad because it shows how much of a fake toll Obama is. He is marketing this in highly White areas and he builds an ad with only 2 African Americans in it. He talks about all he learned about his grandmother sans the tire tracks. Obama built his career in urban Chicago, with blacks and hispanics, why is he afraid to show him helping them in the ad?

If McCain put out an ad in Detroit, Harlem, LA and only put blacks in it I would feel the same way. Its pandering like a fool, which Obama is already the president of. Don’t try and connect yourself to your white side when it helps you. Don’t try and pretend your something your not.
