Good news: Another Democrat calls for nationalizing the oil industry

Submitted for your disapproval, in case you were wondering what the opposition had in mind as a counterpoint to McCain’s proposal for 45 new nuclear reactors. It’s Maurice Hinchey, whom longtime HA readers will recall as someone brimming with sound theories. This makes two congressional Democrats on record within the past month as supporting an overtly socialist “solution” to gas prices. How many others agree with a plurality of their base but simply haven’t spoken up yet?

The clip’s up front followed by Cavuto’s interview with an Obama-lovin’ nationalization proponent. Creepiest moment: “Maybe the government’s taking it over because it never should have been private in the first place.”

Does this mean that the left is now going to refrain from stamping their feet in transparantly manufactured outrage everytime we properly label them as commies?

I want to hear one journalist ask both Obama and McCain to answer the following question:

Tell me how this march towards government takeover of the private healthcare industry, the private energy industry, education, etc is any different from previous and current Communist run countries? And after you are finished struggling through that answer please explain to me the reason Communism fails and is evil? Thank you.

My personal exit question: Can Obama possibly answer this question in a way that simultaneously satisfies the political moderates as well as his little commie hopeandchange army?

May as well start calling them Commiecrats because what little is left of the mask is slipping off.

The efficiency of the Post Office with the compassion of the DMV & IRS all run by quota hires and political patronage… you won’t even be able to fill your tank without forms filled out in triplicate… and notarized, probably. Expect to spend less time having your airport luggage searched than to fill your gas tank. All with a Petroleum Access Charge ($5.00 and up) per gas station visit; Congressional limos excepted.

This might be a detail, but isn’t this illegal? I mean this is America , we do have rights. So far.

BTW, I read that over 75% of the oil production in the world is already in the hands of one government or another. I can’t see that it is keeping down prices.

Sometimes it’s good to give these people a little publicity to be able to see what they really think. What they advocate, what they want to enact when and if they win elections.

If they win.

Being an informed voter is good for your country.

jerrytbg on June 18, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Rhetorical question - if they’re claiming the oil companies are causing the high prices because they’re not taking advantage of the land leases they’ve already paid for - e.g. sitting on known reserves of oil to artificially inflate the price (isn’t that illegal?) - why don’t they prosecute them?

Answer, because they know they’re not illegally causing the high prices.

Therefore, they go on their political attack of those evil oil companies with the cheering media advancing their claims.

In the medical industry the scapegoat is the evil drug companies.

In the auto related industries it’s the evil insurance companies.

In education it’s the evil, bigoted Christians / conservatives.

This is how the leftists are going to take over.

They’ll get it too after all the illegals here now are granted citizenship.

Before I thought we were on a fast track to becoming France or Britain.

After this kind of talk I now think we’re skipping right along to becoming Venezuela.

Bread and circuses !!!

I respectfully disagree. The creepiest moment was at the end when she agreed that the government needs to take over the media. ::shudder:: Marxist collectivist through and through. Totally un-American.

You hate Bill O’Reilly

I don’t hate Bill O. I just find his show (when I have watched) to be very annoying. I like Miller Time, but only cause Dennis is on.

you also slander him with crap that you make up

I believe the term you’re looking for is libel. And I’m not aware that I’ve made anything up about him. Just stated an opinion.

Yeah

Yep. It’s pithier.

Anyways, when members of Congress feel the atmosphere is ripe for calling for socializing the private energy sector, I think there are more pressing problems in the world than Bill O’s crankery.

Those “educated and intelligent” LLL’s and the MSM have always misunderestimated George W. Bush and they certainly remained true to form today. Today he set a trap for the Democrats which they happily walked right into. It is a trap that is like a spider’s web, the more they try to spin their way out of it the tighter they will become entangled.

President Bush shined the spotlight on the defining issue of this election and the Democrats reacted exactly as was expected. They reacted with their best Marie “Let them eat cake!” Antoinette fashion while spouting off their Marxist shibboleths.

It will cost them the election, period.

The Ugly American on June 18, 2008 at 9:36 PM

Energy is required for all economic actions, and pretty much all human actions, nationalizing energy gets Marxists to the rock bottom foundation of a society, giving them the power to socially re-engineer the entire country.

They were giving us the Saving The Planet lie and now it’s the Saving Your Wallet lie, but neither concerns them really. As others here have pointed out, Obama and most eco-nuts do favor high oil prices, as a means of controlling our behavior. It’s all about the power to Change us.

Or should I say Che-nge us?

The Atlas Shrugged references are spot on. These Marxist pigs want to take over energy, healthcare, mainstream education, and appease everyone (religious extremists) so we can hold hands and be fair to one another.

It makes me sick everytime Obama mentions fairness with respect to the economy; it’s completely subjective on the terms HE decides - not the hedge fund genius making his clients (pensions, IRA, 401Ks) millions - not the independent gas station owner busting his hump for 8 cent profit margins while the Congressmen who represent them eating filet in DC - but Obama will decide who gets what, because he is enlightened. We have to stand up for capitalism, or the USA will go bankrupt with BHO in the Oval Office. John Galt, please contact John McCain.

SilverStar830 on June 18, 2008 at 10:48 PM

For the last 30 years, I have re-read Atlas Shrugged about this time every summer.

Not reading it this summer.

Why bother. We are living it right now, except there are no Men of Principle left to populate ‘Galt’s Gulch’. There are a million James Taggarts for every one Dagny, Hank or Francisco.

And more than half of the general population are pretty much a bunch of latter day Starnes. And half of the remaining half are pretty much Robert Stadlers.

Does she realize that these companies - public companies - are owned “by the people” of the United States, and they ARE this nebulous, vaguely evil “shareholder” she talks so dismissively about.

OK, if we are to nationalize, then let’s do it right. Everyone gets share certificates - since they belong to us. We’ll get capital gains and dividends, all us citizens and shareholders. So now, in this energy utopia, HIGH OIL PRICES makes everyone’s shares increase. We will LOVE situations we are in now - we will make more money!!!

God I love skewering half-assed ideas. Keep ‘em coming, Democrats. I got’s plenty more where that came from.

FLcapitalistthug on June 18, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Nah, more of a Wesley Mouch, with a little Claude Slagenhop thrown in…. and hoping to be able to be a Mr. Thompson.

Jim Taggart, despite being a complete A-H at least had to work in the real world, meet a payroll and at least be able to delegate authority. Taggart didn’t really aspire to political power; He hated having to make decisions. He merely liked to be able to rub elbows with those in power for the social status, to be liked by them, and have them make his life easier by their patronage.
Obama has never done any of that, he was born a looter and rabble rouser, and has never deviated from that ‘career path.

McCain doesn’t have a clear counterpart in Atlas; The closest would be Kip Chalmers, with a little Phil Reardon and Paul Larken thrown in… although he does have a lot more personal courage than all three of them put together. … I’m being a little unfair to him, but Ayn didn’t have any major characters that come close… Although there was one similar character in Anthem… But I don’t have that one memorized like I do Atlas.

Replace these ~535 clueless idiots with about 75 competent people. Heck, not only would we save money up front, the 75 could probably have the government turning a profit in 3 years, and increase the standard of living for everyone in the nation who is NOT currently on the dole by 25%.

unseen on June 19, 2008 at 1:05 AM

A more important issue is the supply and how it affects our national security and economy. This “nationalization” crap is typical of the dems socialistic mindset. But consider the following:

I remember the oil embargo of 1973 – lines to get gas, some stations would run out before their next allotted shipment, price per gallon increased by 43% and there was talk of rationing. It was not a pretty picture and it could happen again.

Whether via an accident, an act of nature, or a willful aggressive action against the U.S. doesn’t really matter when it comes to availability. If the supply of oil is significantly reduced, the populace will scream bloody murder and push for drilling anywhere and immediately. In the meantime, our economy will be crippled until supplies can resume to some minimum level. That situation would finally be recognized as a national security issue – too late to stop the results.

Why can’t republican leaders get this message across to (at least) independents and perhaps a few thinking democrats? I don’t think that our side is trying hard enough. In hindsight, $4.00/gal will be seen as “chump change” if we experience another shortage and you’re limited to when or how much you could buy.

How would a nationalized oil industry cope with real shortages?

Not sure if anyone posted this already, but this nutjob (yes, she’s a nutjob) went with Hsrry Belafonte to Venezuela to praise Chavez!
http://www.venezuelanalysis.com/news/1559

Another delegation member, Malia Lazu of the group Hip Hop Coalition, which organizes youth in the U.S., said that she could tell that the government has turned over power to Venezuelan poor. “Here in this country, for the few days I have been here, I have been able to see what happens when you give power to the people,” said Lazu. For her, the struggle of Venezuelans for greater social justice, “has breathed life into our [struggle].”

I usually see young conservatives and they tend to speak eloquently and have sane and rational viewpoints. I don’t often see the same thing with young liberals. They tend to be much more radical in their views…usually on the fringe.

After nationalizing the oil companies, what then?

Nationalize the pharmaceutical companies, WalMart, where does it end?

Kini on June 19, 2008 at 3:07 AM

Funny isn’t it.

Liberals whine that Bush has taken away civil liberties,
while democrats ponder nationalizing oil companies, but are forbidden to explore for oil. So that means buying oil from our enemies at their price and if their prices continues to go up, what then?

Nationalize the oil companies again?

Kini on June 19, 2008 at 3:22 AM

Hey Democrats. Guess what. Here in Norway, the state owns virtually all the oil companies in the country. Guess what the price of gas is here…

$2.71 - per liter.

There’s 3.78 liters per gallon, making it $10.24/gallon. Naturally, the state imposes a healthy dose of taxes on the sale of fuel, but still - over $10 per gallon.

Think about it.

That’s because politicians are no longer accountable to the people. All they have to do is please the party machine and the get re-elected. Look at Obama. There was no reason for him to get as far politically as he did. It was the Chicago machine that put him in the Senate, where he proceeded to spend all his time running for president.
On the other hand, the people these socialist democrats represent are perfectly happy with government control of their lives.
We are about done as a free Republic. We are about to be a socialist utopia. An Obama presidency and a socialist democrat majority in Congress will most likely be the final nail in the coffin of America. The Constitution? Well, that’s just some nice words written by slave holding white men on a piece of dry rotted parchment. We’re much more enlightened now.

The efficiency of the Post Office with the compassion of the DMV & IRS all run by quota hires and political patronage… you won’t even be able to fill your tank without forms filled out in triplicate… and notarized, probably. Expect to spend less time having your airport luggage searched than to fill your gas tank. All with a Petroleum Access Charge ($5.00 and up) per gas station visit; Congressional limos excepted.

viking01 on June 18, 2008 at 7:58 PM

When the socialist democrats nationalize the oil industry whenever you go to the gas station you will have to deal with a surley government employee who cant speak English, and who could care less whether you deal with his station or not. On the other hand, what would really be different than now? (a little humor) But I’m serious about the government employee part.

abcurtis on June 19, 2008 at 8:10 AM

I’m guessing Mr. McCain is in agreement with these sentiments having castigated “big profits” by the oil companies! I might also suggest that we nationalize Beer Distributors in the process? Oh…and pharmas, and health insurance companies, auto companies, banks, mortage companies! So many corporations for these geniuses to run…so little time! Muhahahahah!

sabbott on June 19, 2008 at 8:13 AM

May as well start calling them Commiecrats because what little is left of the mask is slipping off.viking01 on June 18, 2008 at 7:58 PM

I just think they feel confident enough that they can come out of the closet. They have their guy that just may win in a big way and it’s safe to show their true socialistic mind set because they really and truly think they are now the majority view in the country. Lets hope that their fatal flaw is that they are getting suckered by the lefty news just as much as everyone else is.

jmarcure on June 19, 2008 at 8:15 AM

I’ve noticed that without exception, ALL the socialist democrats are saying the same thing: “We cant drill our way out of this problem.” We can if you get out of th way.

abcurtis on June 19, 2008 at 8:20 AM

Do people even know the difference between a free enterprise system and communism anymore? Apparently not, the Democrats are now making comment openly that Karl Marx would be proud of.

Our public schools have trained up a generation of commies, they can’t find Russia on the map but at least they know how to goose step.

Maxx on June 18, 2008 at 10:11 PM

I’m convinced most people neither know the difference or care. All they want is for the government to provide for them, care about their problems, raise their children, provide housing and jobs and give them a tummy rub from time to time, bail them out when they make bad decisions.
Socialism is when the government controls means of production and property.
Communism is when the government owns means of production and property. Your name might be on your property, and you’re paying for it and paying the taxes on it, but have you ever tried to do anything to or with your property or your small business without the permission of the local, state and possibly the federal government?
So you tell me - are we socialist or a free republic?

It is becoming increasingly clear that we are in a war. Most people don’t know it yet. Most can’t see it but they already have their Vichy form of government in place.

God help this country.

unseen on June 19, 2008 at 1:05 AM

Yes, we are in a war with our own leadership, people that we elected to represent US. Now we have to fight with them to do what’s right.

abcurtis on June 19, 2008 at 8:31 AM

I don’t think our economy here in the States could withstand $10/gal gas. It would totally collapse.

labrat on June 19, 2008 at 5:57 AM

That’s the plan. The left has been working very hard to get us into a position where the economy will collapse because it is pretty much the only way they will be able to sweep in and take over. They tried many different ways and have managed to get their people into positions of power but the cult of environmentalism was the ticket. Lets hope that once again they fail but this time I’m not so sure that they will because they are starting to be very open about their views and plans. This leads me to believe that they feel very confident that they are on the brink of success and no longer have to hide.

Brownie, formerly of FEMA, is available to run all of the refineries. Just look at the job FEMA did in NORLINS.
Let’s do it. (idiot demoncrats)

Nationalize trucking companies too, and fast food joints while you’re at it. And the NFL. And all liquor stores.

Which plank of the Communist Manifesto is not in force to some degree in the US?

Akzed on June 19, 2008 at 8:58 AM

Oil execs should not be in the same chain of command as the folks who make foreign policy. When they are, you get Europe, whose foreign policy in the Middle East is solely based on obtaining oil as cheaply as possible. Irregardless of morality, alliances, or even other things which may be in the nation’s self-interest (such as preventing terrorism).

This country has not followed the Constitution since FDR was elected.

This is scary. This woman is a blithering idiot.

roux on June 19, 2008 at 9:34 AM

This might be a detail, but isn’t this illegal? I mean this is America , we do have rights. So far.

If this happens, someone will sue. The case will go to the Supreme Court, who will officially strip our rights away.

Grandpa Monster needs to crawl back to his coffin.

Tell me it’s not him!!

maintenanceman on June 19, 2008 at 10:27 AM

How about getting more efficient automobiles by nationalising that industry too.

We could have an awesome “peoples’ car” that gets 100 mpg…..a “folks’ wagon”, if you will.
