Good news: Another Democrat calls for nationalizing the oil industry

Submitted for your disapproval, in case you were wondering what the opposition had in mind as a counterpoint to McCain’s proposal for 45 new nuclear reactors. It’s Maurice Hinchey, whom longtime HA readers will recall as someone brimming with sound theories. This makes two congressional Democrats on record within the past month as supporting an overtly socialist “solution” to gas prices. How many others agree with a plurality of their base but simply haven’t spoken up yet?
The clip’s up front followed by Cavuto’s interview with an Obama-lovin’ nationalization proponent. Creepiest moment: “Maybe the government’s taking it over because it never should have been private in the first place.”

I heard this interview and my jaw is still on the floor. They could manage this like they manage Amtrak. We will still pay $4 a gallon for gas and then have to provide additional funds of billions a year to keep them afloat.

amerpundit on June 18, 2008 at 6:02 PM
All we need is another damn bloated inefficient government bureaucracy to send more of our hard-earned dollars too. The government sucks at running business because they don’t have to be streamlined to stay in business like the rest of us hard working stiffs. Just raise taxes, that’s the government solution to stay afloat.
txsurveyor on June 18, 2008 at 6:03 PM
They probably couldn’t pull it off. But this kind of talk will only be bad for the stock market and thus good for Obama’s chances.
snaggletoothie on June 18, 2008 at 6:04 PM
Yeah, and the government would never do stuff like tell consumers they can’t have any gas this week because the oil supply has been reserved for some industry that happens to have a very large and effective lobby in D.C.
And the government never overpays or overcharges for anything, so prices would stay nice and low forever.
And the government wouldn’t use their control of the oil industry as a way to manipulate consumer behavior, like refusing to distribute state-owned gasoline to people who drive non-hybrid vehicles. Or telling us we can only have X gallons per week and when we use it up we have to walk or use public transportation or hitchhike.
And the government would be Benevolent and Wise in its administration of this most vital of industries.
And unicorns will poop Skittles all over my yard.

Are there any States out there with more Federal Marshals then State Troopers?
I bring this up because the act of nationalizing the oil companys will have implications that the Democrats just don’t understand. The least of which will be the problems of how to run a business. This would snowball out of control faster then an FU fight at a bar.
Can Congress really be this stupid?

The investors like the teachers union, auto workers union, carpenters union etc… who have a lot of there money in these gas companies. How will they react if the government takes over and voids out a portion there retirement pension funds. Sure they will just invest in something else until the govt. sees a profit being made and wants a piece of it too. The left makes it sound like only rich people are invested in these companies.

Combine this with the 2006 Kelo decision, and what you get is pretty much an unspoken quid pro quo — Democrats balk at allowing private oil companies to drill in any new domestic locations for oil and/or natural gas. But nationalize them — with government-appointed bureaucrats of the proper political party in charge (think James Johnson at Fannie Mae) and you’d see Democrats not only willing to drill everywhere, but they would also be willing to toss private property rights and mineral rights out the window in order to get to those oil and gas reserves on non-government land.
Got land with potential energy deposits on it — here’s a buck, now shut up and go away while we take it out of the ground, or we’ll have you arrested. They’d be everything they say private oil companies are right now, except they would have the power of the federal government behind them.

There’s nothing stopping the dems from building new refineries that when operational will be so efficient that they will put the private refineries out of business or force them to compete on price.
How long will it take them to come up with a progressive pricing schedule for gas?
rw on June 18, 2008 at 6:29 PM
I confess that I am, a little. I thought they’d continue the more subtle approach they’ve been using for the past half-century or so. I thought they’d continue couching their socialist proposals in terms that didn’t seem overtly socialist/communist in nature. Their sudden willingness to be so blatant about nationalizing multiple vital industries means they sense the American people are receptive to it now. I hope to God they’re wrong, but I suspect they’re quite right. That’s what surprises and scares me. I guess I still thought the American people would automatically balk if these things were presented to them quite baldly as socialist programs. But they seem to be embracing it as hopenchange instead. Crappity-crap-crap. We’re doomed.

Jaibones on June 18, 2008 at 6:58 PM
One more example of how the “progressive” mind works.
And the most surreal part is, they believe that after being stripped of their property by government fiat, the oil companies, workers, shareholders, and all, will still work to make money, not for themselves, but for the government.
And also believe that having been stripped of the assets that pay for the equipment, they’ll still be able to operate effectively.
In Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, Hank Rearden’s conversation with Dr. Ferris sums up their beliefs;
“You won’t go bankrupt. You’ll always produce,” said Dr. Ferris, neither in praise nor in blame, merely in the tone of stating a fact of nature, as he would have said to another man: You’ll always be a bum. “You can’t help it. It’s in your blood. Or, to be more scientific: you’re conditioned that way.”
This would be laughable if the subject weren’t so serious. Whatever state this fool is from, his constituents should begin a recall petition immediately. Not just because he’s an idiot, but because in calling for a patently illegal action under the Constitution, he has violated the oath of office he took, which specifically calls upon him to “preserve, protect, and defend” said Constitution.
He needs to find out what it’s like to be Gray Davis. Now.

“if we’re going to start talking about crazy policies like killing our environment, then lets talk about how we …”
Ok, so why just oil? Name an industry that uses no oil, no gas, no transportation, and no energy. That industry might stay private, otherwise they’re “killing our environment” by somebody’s definition.
So we need to nationalize all industry. It’s simply a logical following of her arguments. And the prices for everything will come down when the government can set prices on everything.
Hey, I could buy a new sports car at the dollar store. And my job would be done by magical unicorns and fairies…
Oh, maybe I went too far there; but that last statement wasn’t a less plausible prediction of the future than the Government doing a good job running the oil production and refining industries; or the idea of prices coming down from Government dictated pricing.

No, prices will be allowed to rise until they reach what Obama & Co. consider the “proper level”- defined as the level at which most people cannot afford to run their own automobiles, and are forced onto public transportation.
At which point, of course, the automobile industry implodes. Taking the rest of our national economy with it.
The United Auto Workers, of course, are 100% behind the Democrats. As are the United Mine Workers, the Teamsters, and every other single transportation/energy industry union whose members will be unemployed after the Democrats’ grand plans reach their fruition.
At which point, they will no doubt find the only employment they can get will be in the New Model Army the Dems are going to need. Because once they’ve wrecked our economic base, there will be only one way to keep what’s left of the economy afloat- and their own heads out of a collective noose. Namely the same way revolutionary France did it under that notable military and political dimwit, Napoleon Bonaparte’.
They’ll have to take what they need from other countries. By force.
And since our existing military will not do it for them, they’ll need one that will. One that will not be taking any oaths to the Constitution.
They love to slander our military, by claiming that it is “imperialistic”. Believe me, if these Marxist morons succeed at their psychotic dreams, it will launch an era of aggressive warfare the likes of which hasn’t been seen on this planet since that little argument between the English, the French, and the Spanish over who had the biggest set of cojones’ in Europe- the one that lasted about a century. Except this one won’t be confined to Europe.
Call me alarmist, but as John W. Campbell said, “work out the implications”.
And they are not pleasant to contemplate.
