Video: Russert remembered by his son

Not what you’d expect, and impressively so: For a kid his age, under these circumstances, doubtless sensing some unspoken pressure to emote for the cameras, he’s remarkably poised and articulate. Can’t fault the media for turning the cameras around this weekend to pay tribute, but there’s always something off-putting when they become part of the story they’re covering. This clip is a nice corrective.

Exit question: Who’ll replace Russert? Olby, Matthews, and David Gregory are each insufferable and thus unthinkable. I like Jonah Goldberg’s idea of a return to the panel format with a knowledgeable yet inconspicuous moderator, like Chuck Todd, to emcee. If Todd’s too inconspicuous to deliver ratings, though, then how about bringing Couric back? CBS is allegedly looking to dump her, it’d make for big buzz (and a sort of amends to women viewers disgruntled over MSNBC’s treatment of Hillary), and any dearth of gravitas on her part would be offset by the Broders and Ifills on the panel.

Blowback

Exit question: Who’ll replace Russert?

Brian Williams? Tom Brokaw, at least for a while?

amerpundit on June 16, 2008 at 11:14 AM

What about JoeScar?

but there’s always something off-putting when they become part of the story they’re covering.

Oh, God, have they.

Blake on June 16, 2008 at 11:23 AM

RIP, he raised a good son it seems.

Dr. Manhattan on June 16, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I’m sorry about what happened, but it’s not a fascinating topic.

mymanpotsandpans on June 16, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Luke is already better qualified than Olberfraud or Matthews, who should have been dismissed after that despicable episode Friday.

Considering the dearth of objective journalists at NBC, using Brokaw or Williams in the interim would probably work, or perhaps rotate for a bit and see what works/who draws better.

Darkhorse suggestion: Brit Hume.

JammieWearingFool on June 16, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Classy kid.

Proud to be a BC alumnus with this young man.

D2Boston on June 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Stopped by my Mom’s yesterday and we talked about Tim Russert passing. I acknowledged that while I didn’t think he was an objective reporter, it did seem far too short a life.

Her commie hippie husband was listening to NPR and asked me to look at his TIVO because he wasn’t able to record Olbermann any more and missed him.

It’s a shame I couldn’t seem to find the problem :o)

cntrlfrk on June 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Luke is a man, I wish I could say the same about Lauer…

d1carter on June 16, 2008 at 11:33 AM

I bet Brokaw fills in for most of Russert’s stuff through Election Day.

BillLalor on June 16, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Wow, Luke is a great communicator. He has a lot of poise for someone so young.

Thanks for posting this.

Dr. Gecko on June 16, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Normally, the media glorifying one of its own makes me gag. But for Tim Russert, I can make an exception. Though he was a liberal, his liberalism was the classical (traditional values, patriotic) variety, and he was a class act.

petefrt on June 16, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Brokaw is about the only one that can fill in. Everyone else at NBC News is either not sane enough, or not bright enough to fill in for Russert.

RBMN on June 16, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Has Chris Matthews apologized for his disgusting display?

I know that if that POS had pulled that with my deceased father, I’d be hopping in the car and going to wherever that slime lives…unbelieveable.

benrand on June 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM

I don’t find this Chuck Todd guy nearly as insightful as everyone seems to be making this political season, frankly he got just as carried away as Olberman & Matthews re Obama / Clinton, just behind the scenes.

That whole team at NBC / MSNBC wrote it all over at new hampshire, yet clinton took more than her 50% share of popular vote, won like 10 straight down the stretch, and had about 100 less delegates near the end out of 2000+..

In my opinion Chuck Todd either played a major role in calling this twisted view of the race or on the flip side didn’t challenge the political discourse enough away from the camera at the networks which is supposed to be his job.. Either way IMHO he’d make a poor replacement at this time.

saus on June 16, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Luke seems like a smart, poised, articulate young man. He is a credit to his parents. That is all any parent could hope for.

HawaiiLwyr on June 16, 2008 at 11:47 AM

I’d say they should go after Glenn Beck, but his show is damned good, and I don’t want that to go away.

That interview was pretty good. Shows he has a good kid, and he was a good father.

MadisonConservative on June 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM

One name I heard for a permanent replacement was Gwen Ifill. That would be a good choice.

RBMN on June 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Enough already!

Yes, Russert will be missed. Yes, it is sad. Yes, Russert was a good interviewer but the news broke Friday afternoon. This continued adoration is beginning to smell a bit self-serving by the media. Would they be so interested in this story if, say, some politician other than Teddy Kennedy died of a heart attack? Some aging rock star? NO! The media is hyping coverage of Russerts death because it is a story THEY care about.

As to replacing Russert on MTP- the biggest mistake NBC could make is to attempt to find a Russert clone. They need to find somebody who has journalistic credibility who all sides are willing to sit down in an interview format. Beyond that the replacement needs to be allowed to shape the show for his/her interviewing style.

highhopes on June 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM

What an awesome interview. As the mother of a teenage boy I can only pray that I am as good a parent to him as Tim Russert was to Luke.

RIP, Tim.

rockmom on June 16, 2008 at 11:51 AM

I totally forgot about chuck todd. He seems much more palatable than the matthews/olby/gregory trifecta.

ernesto on June 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM

highhopes on June 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM

highhopes, I guess its because most people don’t pay much attention to the news during the weekend. For alot of people the story is still only a few hours old. I spoke with people yesterday (Sun), for example, who took Fri off and didn’t even hear about this news yet. The media will cover the story today and then it will fade away a little bit other than an occasional discussion about who will take MTP over from here on out.

Zetterson on June 16, 2008 at 11:56 AM

What an incredible, mature and classy young man. That is the greatest legacy of Tim Russert.

No one will ever fill Russert’s shoes just the way no one has been able to fill Johnny Carson’s shoes.

I am very amazed at Luke’s strength.

carbon_footprint on June 16, 2008 at 12:04 PM

carbon_footprint on June 16, 2008 at 12:04 PM

To clarify: Luke Russert is Tim Russert’s greatest legacy.

carbon_footprint on June 16, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Glenn Beck should replace Russert.

beatcanvas on June 16, 2008 at 12:09 PM

A fine young man, and a credit to his father.

LimeyGeek on June 16, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Please don’t overlook Lisa Myers, NBC’s Chief Investigative Reporter. Then theres always Geraldo. Also an attorney like Tim. I’ll bet his agent is already working the phones. His views would fit right in with the NBC of 2008.

meci on June 16, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Chris Wallace would be a good choice if they could lure him from Fox.

SWLiP on June 16, 2008 at 12:32 PM

I will not be surprised if he takes the same route as his father.

This kid is all right!

newton on June 16, 2008 at 12:42 PM

What about E.D. Hill? She’s awesome

LimeyGeek on June 16, 2008 at 12:49 PM

He’s not really replaceable for all his functions, as Mr. Zucker said.

Brokow for now.

Just for laughs at Matthews/Olbermann, replace him with ‘beautiful’ Gregory.

Odd, but to be considered - Luke, with a good panel.

Entelechy on June 16, 2008 at 12:51 PM

I enjoyed hearing clips of Russert played. However, after the umpteenth personal recollection by another newsman about Russert, I had enough.

Blake on June 16, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Megan Kelly.

bernzright777 on June 16, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Apparently Mr. Russert was busy with coaching replacements at times, and had Gwen Ifill chosen to get ready for such a day.

Entelechy on June 16, 2008 at 12:59 PM

No way I could maintain that sort of composure…

Wyznowski on June 16, 2008 at 1:04 PM

How about Obama after he loses the election? He could stay in the senate and continue to vote, “present.”

snaggletoothie on June 16, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Joe Scarborough, Norah O’Donnell or Kelly O’Donnell would do great and give many great years to America & MSNBC.

HotAirJosef on June 16, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Bob Costas is NBC’s best interviewer. His old TV program was a delight wherein he could leave Mario Cuomo sputtering, speechless or Larry King begging for mercy. Sadly he walked away from it years back to concentrate on sports. Would he could be talked back.

snaggletoothie on June 16, 2008 at 1:19 PM

Very funny!!!!!!!!!!!

HotAirJosef on June 16, 2008 at 2:24 PM

Wow, Luke is one exceptional guy - I hope he goes into broadcasting - with his graciousness and ability to articulate he would resonate much better with Americans then those people with their axes to grind.

I was impressed a couple years ago listening to Tim Russert discuss his book about his dad. I am now more impressed, not only after hearing Luke talk about Tim, but hearing Luke’s appreciation and gratitude to so many others - you could say it is the final chapter to Tim’s book.

Texas Mike on June 16, 2008 at 2:27 PM

I know the Russert and NBC family is grieving but watching the Sunday morning Meet the Press they said that Tim could have been anything to include the Pope or the President. Guys, get a grip. Tell stories and refer to his constant love of family AND country. Especially try and remember that when you bash this nation for everything that it has stood for in the past. Your friend knew it and unfortunately the rest of you tend to think that our best days are behind us. Your friend did not. I don’t think Keith O., Chris M., or the rest of you have a clue. Tom B. may have not have forgotten just yet, but he will just as quickly as the Dems in Congress forgot about uniting after 9/11. They are all right about one thing - NBC will never be the same - and it will never ever ever regain the respect it once had. Sunday morning used to be one exception. No longer. As soon as someone crosses the line on Meet the Press, they will show some clip or quote from Russert to show that they are just continuing what he would have wanted. Good luck guys, you don’t have a prayer.

JeffinOrlando on June 16, 2008 at 2:49 PM

How come no one has mentioned Andrea “it-was-widely-known that-Joe-Wilson’s-wife-worked-at-the-CIA” Mitchell? Something about her grotesquely under-reported role in the Plame scandal has me hankering for more.

Infidoll on June 16, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Chris Wallace or Bob Costas would be good choices.

SoulGlo on June 16, 2008 at 4:16 PM

May we all be judged by the children we leave behind.

By this measure Tim Russert lead a successful life.

EJDolbow on June 16, 2008 at 4:17 PM

What a terrific interview.

I’m sorry about what happened, but it’s not a fascinating topic.
mymanpotsandpans on June 16, 2008 at 11:25 AM

I love American success stories, and stories about good decent people, and Tim Russert was both. Seems like his son is too.

Rosmerta on June 16, 2008 at 5:39 PM

Who will replace Russert?

Just get his son.

mram on June 16, 2008 at 5:50 PM

The interview was too long.

Glynn on June 16, 2008 at 10:51 PM

I nominate Tucker Carlson.

AprilOrit on June 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM

No better tribute to Russert than the amazing kid he raised.

eski502 on June 17, 2008 at 12:05 AM

I nominate Tucker Carlson.

AprilOrit on June 16, 2008 at 11:09 PM

Hey, Tucker and Luke even look kind of alike. Has anyone ever seen them in the same room together?
