UK, EU announce Iran sanctions

Has Europe given up on the UN? Both the UK and EU today announced new sanctions on Iran after their outright refusal of a new incentive package offered by Europe to stop Tehran’s nuclear-weapons program. The mullahcracy apparently didn’t want to talk about it this time, despite the BBC’s odd analysis last week, and Europe apparently doesn’t want to wait for the UN Security Council to act, either:

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday announced new sanctions against Iran and a small increase in troops for Afghanistan, handing President Bush a symbolic boost on the last day of his weeklong farewell trip to Europe.

Brown, appearing with Bush at a 10 Downing Street news conference, said Britain and the European Union would act later Monday to freeze the assets of Iran’s largest bank, Bank Melli, in response to Tehran’s refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

Bush has made Iran’s uranium enrichment program a focus of his European swing, and has been encouraging European nations to further pressure the Islamic Republic to curtail its nuclear activities and allow more extensive international inspections. Iran says the program is peaceful, but there is concern that the enriched uranium could also be diverted to nuclear weapons.

The US had already isolated Melli last year after detailing payments made to terrorist groups over a four-year period. The US also cut off another Iranian bank, Saderat, from the system. The EU/UK move to add themselves to the sanctions helps force other banks around the world into ending relations with the Iranians, as any bank that does business with Melli cannot do business with Western banks at all. Neither Melli nor Saderat will gain access to the international system any longer, but that business will simply shift to another Iranian bank instead.

The move indicates that the Europeans have foregone the UN route for anything other than a pro forma route. Russia and China have blocked the imposition of significant sanctions at the UNSC for years, allowing Iran to gain momentum for its uranium-enrichment efforts. Now that new data shows Iran probably received the Pakistani designs for nuclear warheads, the enrichment cycle is all that keeps the mullahcracy from having nukes on the Shahab-3 and -4, with range into eastern Europe. Europe can’t afford to wait for Russia and China to act responsibly.

Bush and Brown both understand this. Bush will complete his final European tour today in Northern Ireland, having won some significant victories on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran, including these sanctions and a realization that the UN has proven itself useless in the present crisis.

The U.N. is worse than useless; it is corrupt, hypocritical, and even criminal.

It’s far past time for Europe, and everybody else, to recognize that fact.

Oil – the scourge of the planet.

I dearly wish the U.S. would find the internal fortitude to get us off the back of the middle east pricks.

I wish the middle east would go away - I’m sick of the impact that stinking regions has on our lives.

Middle East oil is the scourge of the planet. We have our own oil and others means like nuclear and wind power to provide power but our “leaders” are too inept to make it happen. If it weren’t for oil being found there then that region of the planet would be left to it’s own self destructive ends and would be as much an afterthought as many 3rd world regions in Africa.

Advice taken – I am holding the box – unfortunately it appears THE MIDDLE FREAKING EAST is still over there.

Thanks for suggesting however – I will take advice,

A bit unfair. Since its founding, Islam and it’s various empires have most often been serious trouble for the West and others — a perpetual thorn in our sides.

If we would only drill for oil on the Continental Shelf and exploit the shale oil in the Rockies, we wouldn’t need oil from the Middle East, and we could deal with them on our terms, not theirs.

Now they’ve done it! Europe worships at the altar of talk, and refusing to talk is the worst sin one can commit. All else can be forgiven (and even rewarded) as long as one is willing to engage in meaningless dialog. :)

Bingo! The problem with UN isn’t just that it does nothing, it’s that it gives an excuse to others to do nothing. It’s the same problem with Obama’s unconditional negotiation. As long as were negotiating, there’s a chance of a breakthrough, so we can’t do anything to jeopardize that. Our enemies know this, and they’ll keep us at the table indefinitely, effectively negating any influence we may have over their goals. If their goals are dominating the middle east through terror groups like Hezbollah, satellite states like Syria, and militias like Sadr’s protected by an impending nuclear umbrella, we need to have influnce or cede the region. Obama thinks he can curb the Iranians from their goals, when his plan would actually insure they achieve those goals by making us impotent lest we disrupt the negotiations.

If Obama came out and recognized the possible danger of his policy and said, despite the dangers we need to move forward, I might have some respect for him. Unfortunately, he seems completely unaware that there could be a downside and is, IMHO, dangerously naive.

You’re fooling yourself. China and India suck up every drop we don’t. If we were to somehow get off oil tomorrow, the money would still flow into the hands of the terrorists and their beefs with America and Israel would go on unabated.

Face it, there are only two ways to make these people stop hating us: 1) Leave Israel to twist in the wind or 2) Give them something better to do. George Bush thinks promoting democracy in the ME achieves the latter. In the absence of any better ideas, I’m willing to agree.

We could abandon Israel tomorow, and it would not matter to the Islamists.

The Western Ideals of Freedom of Speech, Conscience and Religion are all potentialy lethal threats to Isalm. As long as America is sitting here having the Freedoms we have and still being a rich country, we are a threat to the very existance of Islam… and can not be tolerated…

Remember, Israel is just the little Satan, we are the big one.

So…the UN has blocked meaningful condemnation of Iran’s nuclear program, through the dangerous UNSC, they have made the banking sanctions meaningless since Dubai and China can continue to meet their international banking needs.

Any international bankers out there this morning? With all of the currency in Dubai and China, why does anyone need us or Europe?

There is no doubt as to which one Muslims would choose to have destroyed if they got their pick – Israel.

You’re right, they do hate us for what we are, even if it were without our ties to Israel, but nothing can trump their millenia-old hatred against the Jews.

It all boils down to Ishmael vs. Isaac.

Not sure it matters too much, but I guess I disagree. The Jews under Muslim rule had a variety of treatments at different times. Undoubtedly they had dhimmi status, but I’m not sure it was any worse than for any other non-Muslim.

I think the Muslims object most to foreign rule over “Muslim land.”

I’ll disagree with this. The Arab governments like Israel — it’s a convenient scapegoat. If Israel were gone then the people might turn against their corrupt, dictatorial and incompetent governments. This way everything is the fault of the Jooooooooos.

Gotta say I disagree. Now I may be wrong, but I believe that even if Israel were wiped out, they’d still have the big satan (us) to hurl their vitriolic speech / weapons at. Failing that, they’d have the ultimate fall back of sunni versus shiite hatred. To sum it up, it is in their nature to find somebody to hate for any asinine reason their pointy little heads can dream up.

Duncan Khuver on June 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM

I find this funny. Reading the news directly from the source (the Daily Mail and the Times Online), one would think that the Brits are too PC to worry about the Muslim problem, much less terrorism.

Oh, wait. They’re one in the same.

Londonistan, right?

I think this is a good example of the kind of stuff that McCain’s proposed League of Democracies would be involved in.

Texas Gal on June 16, 2008 at 1:59 PM

As much as there has been historic antipathy between Arabs and Jews, I’d suspect that the big push for Israel-hatred lately has been their economic, military, scientific, and cultural success. Years of “poor us, we’re held back because Allah stuck us in a benighted, resource-poor environment” gone right out the window….since Israel lacks even oil.

If I were in the ruling class of one of the neighboring countries, knowing that every day Israel exists and prospers is another indictment of my parasitic lifestyle, I’d be pretty miffed. And I’d preach it from the mosques, write it in the textbooks, show it on TV, and repeat it in the markets.
