Happy Father’s Day!

A big Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads and grand-dads reading Hot Air today! I’m lucky enough to spend the day with the Admiral Emeritus today, and we’ve already started the day off in traditional fashion by arguing over sports (he thinks Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, and I figure he knew the rules before he bet on his own games as manager). We’ll head out to a big lunch with more of the family today and celebrate the day:

We’ll celebrate Father’s Day with my son, daughter-in-law, and the Little Admiral next weekend when we get back to Minneapolis. The above is a picture from almost four years ago of the other two fathers in the family.

Enjoy the day, and our best to all of the men who do their best for their families today!

Don’t let Hollywood & Madison Avenue fool you!

They’re desperately needed.

Happy Fathers Day everyone.

My Dad turned 86 this year. Father of 3, Grandfather of 6, Great-Grandfather of 9. He served in the big one, WWII, in North Africa, Italy and the South Pacific – voluntarily joined the Navy at 18 years of age right after graduating from high school. He received a purple heart from a leg injury received from a Kamakazee attack on his mine-layer, the USS Keokuk.

He now resides in a Health Center at a retirement home, where Alzheimer’s is slowly but surely taking him away from the life he knew and the family he loves so much.

Happy Father’s day Pop! Yours is a generation to be admired, appreciated and respected.

Happy Dads Day Dads :)

Dear Pop,

I’m positive that you are still sneaking into that watermelon patch and having a snack on ol’ Smitty’s dime. Still climbing down the side of USS Nautilus into that rubber raft and paddling to the beach in Makin. Still flipping on the red light and pulling over that fella and not giving him a ticket. Still swinging that golf club like a bazooka. You taught me that shouting “four” is the neighborly thing to do.

I’m sure you noticed that I am occassionaly still and ‘idg-it’ but still keep plugging along. The grandson turned out just fine, although he is still a bit ticked off about what you made him do when you caught him smoking a cigarette.

All in all I gotta say…..thanks Pop. Life is just like you told me it would be, bumpy as hell, but damn sure worth the ride.

Love,
‘Idg-it’

Hope you have a wonderful day!!

I’m not much on hallmark mandated holidays, but i believe there is nothing more valuable or sorely needed in todays world than loving, dedicated fathers….they should be appreciated every single day…quite a concentration of them in this group of commentors, i’m sure. hope you all have a great day today!

Same here except my son managed to find the world’s most appropriate card. A Father on cover is fiddling with assembly directions. It’s a holograph so as you tilt it he’s twirling the directions around with alternating expression of bemusement and frustration on his face. Inside it reads, “Today comes with simple instructions. Have Fun, Dammit! Happy Father’s Day!” I’m always putting something together or fixing something so it’s the perfect card. I roared with laughter when I opened it…

It’s raining here in Metro Boston and we are having a cookout so I’ll be standing in the rain cooking on the grill while the large extended family hangs in the house… funny what the Fam considers a day of fun for TBOD (and of coarse, they know that is fun for me – doing for them.)

OK, I have got to leave all the Dads with this little story:

The World’s most powerful king was talking with a foreign dignitary one day. He told him, “I am the ruler of the World and I am ruled by my wife. My wife is ruled by our son and our son is ruled by the dog. The dog rules the World.”

TheBigOldDog on June 15, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Pop… an orphan in the Great Depression, a sailor in WWII, a volunteer fireman for more than 50 years, and a father of four rather unruly children. Where you got your patience I’ll never know. We stand on your shoulders. You truly were one of “The Greatest Generation”.

Happy Fathers Day to all the Airhead daddies!

I’m headed out to have lunch with my family and the most wonderful man and the best Dad in the whole world.

Happy Fathers Day Daddy, I love you so so much!!! You are truely the best, we are so honored and so lucky to have you as our father!!

AprilOrit on June 15, 2008 at 12:00 PM

It’s also the day to remember that Dad is an occupation–not a lab report.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads here.

For you sons and daughters lucky enough to still have your dads with you, don’t forget to tell them today how much they mean to you. You never know how much you’ll miss them until they’re gone.

AZCoyote on June 15, 2008 at 12:21 PM

My Dad was a WWII Navy vet. Was fending off kamikazee attacks at the age of 17. Was cut off from resupply once and lived for three months on powdered eggs, biscuits and coffee, nothing else. Departed this life suddenly and too soon in 1995. I wish he could witness my son, his grandson, serving today in the USMC. This is the third straight Father’s Day he has been out of the country. I am giving him another hour or so to call me or he is going to get a little miffy text message from me.

Happy Fathers Day all.

xplodeit on June 15, 2008 at 12:40 PM

My Dad married my Mother even after she became crippled and people told him not to. My Mom died when I was 11 and my Dad raised my brother and I by himself. Later on he got remarried, we didn’t like our step-mom at first, but now we love her and we’re glad he’s not alone. I hope I can be as good a father as he was (and still is).

Happy Father’s Day everyone!

About my Dad, though politically he’s a liberal nut, he’s always been the best father a girl could want, he always respected my decisions, and supported me in every way without spoiling me. Love you Dad!

Supposed to be 98 today. Flags flying. Smoker smokin. Beer chillin. Now if the dancing girls would just get here.

Happy Fathers Day Pop.

Ed, about Rose, you should respect your elders. :)

I was going to tell you I feel your pain and refer you to this older post, but I see we already agree.

This will be my first father’s day as a dad myself. I couldn’t be more ecstatic!

Also, happy father’s day dad and papaw!

My father was given his “last rights” while lying on a hospital bed 23 years ago. I (all of us in my family) are so blessed to have had my father with us for all of these years. I’ve been trying to get through to him all morning; I will eventually get through, or I will have to ask Ed to go by and give him our best for me while Ed’s visiting his family near by in Ca… (just kidding Ed) :)

Happy Fathers day to all!
Happy Fathers day to Ed, and all of the Dad’s at HA.

Keemo on June 15, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Just got through to my father.. All he could talk about was how much fun he had yesterday watching Tiger play golf just down the road (100 miles) from where my parents live. He’s a happy camper with the Lakers playing followed by Tiger.. Whether his team (man) wins or loses, he’s just happy to have had the opportunity to watch these great athletes compete.

Quite honestly, he wanted me off the phone so that he could get ready to yell at the TV… Gotta love it!

Keemo on June 15, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Wait, Pete Rose did what?

Happy Fathers’ Day, everyone!

My father died a long time ago, so there is little reason to celebrate here.

Nevertheless, I just found out on Wednesday that I’m expecting. (No. 2) I thought I could buy my husband a Father’s Day gift… but it looks like he’s already got it.

Happy Father’s Day to all.

Now, off to the range to pop a few caps before it starts to rain! The cook-out will be held in the garage afterwards.

We celebrated Father’s Day last week in Europe. I’m not sure why it’s on a different day. It’s the same with Mother’s Day.

Thanks for the pic ED. Happy Fathers day all.

Charlie Hustle was a bully as a player and worse as a manager but he got the job done. Too bad he got mixed up with the bookies.

When I was a tot in Transylvania, we’d be able to listen on the very old radio to Radio Ljubljana for an hour, once a week, on Thursday nights.

My father taught me how to dance, with my toes on his. He was literally as good as the Astaires of the world. It made youth very charming afterwards, in spite of numerous hardships.

In winter he would load my mother and us two sisters on a big sled and pull us tirelessly on the frozen road. The joy was in his eyes, and on his red cheecks.

He had many good traits, and many flaws. His best trait was his concern for those who really needed help. He was incredibly tough, and incredibly soft-hearted.

For all which I inherited from him, I’m grateful.

I’m reading a book on Iwo Jima today, in memory of my father who served there.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad. You’re the best man I ever knew. And Happy Father’s Day to the rest of the dads out there (especially one in particular – SD).

Skipped church and took a son fishing this morning. The other son slept in with the others after a late night attending an Outlaws lacrosse game with a friend at Invesco Field.

Happy Fathers Day!!

Love you dad, and miss not having you around. Thanks for everything you did for me and the life lessons you taught me. See you in heaven.

Dad went to all of our events when I was a kid. He would drive (with me) to Roswell to watch our highschool team get crushed, and cheered even though my brother never got into the games. He would tell me how proud of me he was as I was puking my guts out after a cross country meet. He would go to the Santa Fe opera with me even though he doesn’t like opera that much. Thanks dad.

Dad served in the Navy in WWII (served in Los Alamos NM designing the bomb casings). He decided to become a physicist and now he has two physicists and a geneticist and his youngest grandaughter in going to college to go into the family business. A life well lived.
