DNC defaults on Denver?

The host committee for the Democratic convention will miss a key fundraising goal tomorrow, according to CNN, and the city now has to wonder whether they will be forced to pay millions of dollars for the Democratic convention. A rumored $15-million shortfall forced the cancellation of a media walkthrough this week, and the Democrats have had to cancel a number of auxiliary events already. The poor fundraising numbers puts the Democrats at a major disadvantage to the Republicans already:
The host committee for the Democratic National Convention faces a possible shortfall of $15 million, complicating logistics for the August event and forcing it to abruptly postpone a media walkthrough of the site scheduled for next week.
The Democratic National Committee has asked the cash-strapped panel to raise $40.6 million by Monday to finance the event. Last month, the committee said it had just $25 million in cash, and it has failed to meet each of several fundraising deadlines since signing a contract with the DNC last year. …
The Democratic National Convention Committee announced Friday that it had delayed a session for the news media next Thursday at the Pepsi Center, site of the August 25-28 convention, and hoped to
reschedule at a later date. “Postponing the event allows us to work through outstanding issues and ensure a successful event when media do arrive in Denver,” said Theodore LeCompte, the DNCC’s
director of media logistics.A DNCC official who asked not to be identified cited financial and logistics problems for the delay.
Earlier this month, the Denver 2008 Host Committee canceled 24 separate welcoming events around Denver for convention delegates.
In contrast, and in a rare moment of Republican advantage, the RNC has outperformed expectations for its St. Paul convention. They had ten times the cash on hand of the DNC and have already begun coordinating with the John McCain campaign on the election. Democrats don’t have that luxury and may not until well after the convention.
Presidential candidates rely on big, splashy conventions to get a big boost in the media. The Democrats have two big problems with that this year. First, they have their convention scheduled for the week before the RNC gala in St. Paul, which doesn’t give them more than a couple of days of post-convention media chatter before all eyes focus on the Republicans. Second, if they can’t get the media coordination started now, it’s likely to go awry and limit even that earned media coverage.
If Barack Obama gets his rumored $100-million June, expect him to direct a big portion of that to the DNC. However, Obama’s fundraising has fallen off three straight months from February’s $50 million to $31 million in April, and he has already run through most of that. With John McCain wooing some of Hillary Clinton’s fundraisers, Obama may not have as much cash to assist the convention as some may predict.

Wha?! Where’s the thundering hoofbeats of change?! Where’s the tsunami of liberalism that supposed to sweep us evil neo-cons out to sea?! Must be diverting all those campaign donations to the Prius payments…

As long as corporations have the hope of the government taking over their employees’ health care plans, they’ll be sure to get the money into the Democrats’ sweaty hands.
jgapinoy on June 15, 2008 at 11:07 AM
I wonder how much money they will have to pay for the Denver PD’s overtime. With all those protesters, you know something fun is happening.
Squid Shark on June 15, 2008 at 11:09 AM
It all George Bush’s fault. No way to get around it.
JonRoss on June 15, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Squid Shark is right. Not to mention the sizable clean-up bills after the riots — er, I mean protests. Worst of all, the good citizens of Denver will be forced to pay for a copious supply of public defenders to minister to those protestors who will have been bused in from out of state who will — regrettably, of course — be tazed and arrested.
Now, it’s not that I want to watch all this unfold on MSNBC, but I feel it is my civic duty to stay abreast of current events.

And this is the same pack of bohemians who want to run our health care system, play kissy face with the Iranians, and generally crapulate on constitutional government. I guess Obama MAY HAVE to bring that gun he was talking about the other day to get this mess under control. That is the only way historically that Marxist/Leninist/Stalinist have been able to gain control of a country.

I guess since public scrutiny forced the Friends of New Orleans Katrina charity group to drop their financial bailout of the DNC Convention parties the DNC is even farther in the hole.

A few thoughts:
A lot of Democrat fundraising in the 2000s has been done by the Clintons, and there have been quite a few promises made by the Clintons. (pardon the blogwhoring) Many of the people to whom these promises have been made have their doubts about being able to collect from the Obamas, now that the Clintons have been thrown under the bus.
The blue trend in Colorado is no doubt driven heavily by the metropolitan area of Denver. If the Democrats prove to be bad houseguests in Denver, what happens to the blue trend?

Ah heck, let’s go right to the source – soros. Eliminate the middle man – obama. Soros is buying the whole thing anyway. If there is a really good article on him, someone please point it out, or a link. Thanks

Apply pressure to the wound and wait two weeks for your government assigned health care provider to arrive.
Rovin on June 15, 2008 at 11:55 AM
A failed convention, depending on how it was covered in the news media, could really help the Republican narrative.
Dems in disarray in Denver, Clinton supporters furious, Obama can’t bring the party together, Obama raised more money than anyone, ever before, but he blew most of it before the convention, Republican convention goes off without a hitch–that would really help the GOP in November.
daryl_herbert on June 15, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I totally agree. But you got to know that even riots and massive burning and looting in the streets of Denver will be portrayed by the MSM as Bush’s and the Republican’s fault, some how, some way.
JonRoss on June 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Ed,
We need more details. Has the Convention Center/City of Denver received progress payments on time? Is the DNC in default? Does the Convention Center/City of Denver have the right cancel the event?
The issue of non-payment of political debts became a major issue when the Teddy Kennedy made a run for the Democratic nomination in 1980. When he dropped his bid, he left unpaid over a million dollars to American Airlines. When AAL sought to write off the debt, the issue became that it was making an illegal campaign contribution.
I suspect the Monday deadline for raising money for the convention has been spurred by some sort of threat by the city of Denver. The Democrats are between a rock and a hard place on this. Corporate sponsors simply don’t like to be involved in events that might degenerate into anarchy. And this is what they face.
The pressures will be intense on historic sponsors especially heavily regulaed ones. Can you imagine Exxon-Mobil coming to the rescue?
Well maybe yes.

peacenprosperity on June 15, 2008 at 1:01 PM
In years past cities went out of their way to attract a major party’s convention because of the boon to the local economy. If the Dems show up and trash Denver and then skip out on the bill other cities may think twice before letting them hold a convention in their town.
repvoter on June 15, 2008 at 1:02 PM
It’s not that I don’t trust the impeccable honesty of political parties (cough, cough), but could this be camouflage to cover serious security worries? They’ve canceled 24 delegate events around the city and consolidated them into one event (to celebrate the anniversary of a natural disaster, appropriately enough) — that sounds fairly drastic.
Nichevo on June 15, 2008 at 1:12 PM
Security worries?
You mean like CodePinko worries or something more serious?

profitsbeard on June 15, 2008 at 1:21 PM
The Dems will try to make it like that, on the inside. But you don’t think, do you, that the Medea Benjaministas are going to let things move blithely along without reminding the Dems constantly of their failure to Stop The War — “4 YEARS TOMANY”?
And on the outside, cruise around Recreate68.org for a while, and maybe check out an anarchist site or two, and you’ll see that hoopla and hugs will not be the main attraction.
One thing I’m looking forward to is BHO having to inevitably condemn the alleged “police brutality” which will occur, while in the same breath praise the police for their attempt to keep order. Gonna be tough out there for someone who learned all his cultural responses on the radical left to run in the non-Chomsky parts of the country.

Jaibones on June 15, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Not sure. The Dems do attract an overabundance of violence-prone crazies — the DNC might be worried about Denver’s ability to control them. The media’s on their side, but not if all hell breaks loose. If it bleeds, it leads.

How the hell are those idiots going to manage the national economy?
uptight on June 15, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Some clarification.
The DNC is not on the hook for the forty mil – the City if Denver is. Our goofy mayor John Hickenlooper (no kidding) promised that the City would raise the money. If they can’t do it we – the citizens of Denver – are going to pay it out of our taxes. Hick promised that that wouldn’t happen but he also promised to clean the snow off the residential streets in 2007 but they were impassable for two months. He also bungled the election in ‘06 and tens of thousands stood in line for hours only to be turned away.
Nobody ever gets mad at him though, because he’s a dem and wanders around with a dumb look on his face. Political correctness makes it impossible to criticize the mentally challenged.
This convention is going to be worse than Dresden.
PS. Denver cops are known for shooting first and never asking questions.
