Big funny: Whoopi jokes that Clarence Thomas isn’t really black

posted at 10:08 pm on June 15, 2008 by Allahpundit

From tonight’s Tony monologue, introducing Laurence Fishburne in “Thurgood,” a timely reminder per yesterday’s AP story about black conservatives that ideology, not race, remains the sine qua non of authentic blackness. Obama wears the Democratic halo and thus doesn’t have to worry too much about having his own bona fides questioned, but woe is him if he betrays the left by trying to govern in that post-partisan way we keep hearing about (but not seeing much of).

The audience duly hoots and applauds, natch.

So, Clarence Thomas really isn’t black? Yet Senator Obama is authentically black, even though, in reality, he’s only half black (his mother was white). Curious.

And I’m a racist for disagreeing with him on anything. Can I just say that I’m disagreeing with the half of Obama that comes from his mother?

Whoopie has had too much whoopie maybe…sort of lost her track on reality.

Whatever, racism is alive and well in this country, but not among the people suspected of it. Mostly, the people who project their identity needs onto others.

Ellen Degenerate was fine until she had to rub her sexual preferences in everyone’s nose. She thought her preference was more important than making light of life. Sorry, buttercup.

So it is with Whoopi and similar weak intellects who need race as means to get what they want. A C. Thomas is a disaster for many blacks, not a mentor. They have nothing other than their race to justify themselves, and the abysmal failure they represent unless you think in terms of “civil activist” or “race relations expert”. A truly color-blind society doesn’t need such people, but they need a job, money…that makes color-blindness a threat, not a goal.

Harry Schell on June 15, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Apparently you can’t be authentically black unless you unconditionally vote for Democrats.

amerpundit on June 15, 2008 at 10:26 PM

ideology, not race, remains the sine qua non of authentic blackness

And we can place gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity into the equation.

E.g., “You’re not a authentic “X” if you don’t support positions A through Z.”

X = women, gay person, Hispanic, Muslim, et cetera.

This is a very pernicious worldview because those that don’t strictly adhere to the ideology become, in effect, non-persons. One can then say anything about them; defame them, ridicule them, libel them, slander them.

E.g., see above.

Clarence Thomas is a positive role model for the black community.

SoulGlo on June 15, 2008 at 10:17 PM

You would certainly think so. Do conservatives define success differently than liberal Democrats? And if so, what is that difference?

Connie on June 15, 2008 at 10:29 PM

I guess, to be authentically “black,” you have to hate the United States that is, and only love the United States that might be someday, but never was. You have to be someone like Barack or Michelle Obama–ungrateful at all times. Not someone like Clarence Thomas, who has a true love for America–loves America with all its imperfections. He loves America because he’s a conservative, and conservatives don’t believe in utopia. That’s why they can be happy here, now. That’s why they can be grateful for the good and don’t wait around grumbling, for the perfect.

What would a show biz creature like Whoopi Goldberg know about authenticity? Judge Thomas is a hero. I’m afraid to claim him as my hero, since I haven’t read his book from a few years ago. Look, if you’ve ever had a crowd against you, and I don’t mean a show biz crowd, you know what I mean.

One has noticed that both Obamas, Barack and Michelle, have some issues regarding authenticity. It’s a theme in their lives, the questioning of it. Along comes Whoopi with the gliberal answers to justify the hodge-podge of the moment.

Justice Thomas’ My Grandfather’s Son is a fantastic book, and through its recounting of Justice Thomas’ life through his own eyes, it demonstrates among other things how personal responsibility and hard work, coupled with an absolute refusal to see oneself as a victim, can overcome grinding poverty, lack of at-the-ready opportunity, and racism from many sources, and take one to a life of success, even to the highest reaches of government in the land. An utterly inspiring story, and an example from which perpetual grievance-mongers regrettably can never profit.

Well…

Rev. Wright… He calls Justice Thomas “Clarence Colon”: and Sec. Rice as “Condamnesia.”..

Or Possibly that could have been what has Colon Powell so confused..

Maybe he doesn’t want to lose his skin color..?

Maybe Rev. Wright was talking about Clearence Thomas, Colon Powell and Condi Rice?

http://pajamasmedia.com/victordavishanson/our_new_nixon/

A “scholar”

One of the defenses of the Rev. Wright advanced by Sen. Obama was that his (suddenly “former”) pastor is a biblical “scholar”. But one surely doesn’t sense anything scholarly about the firebrand Wright from his public lectures. He uses the notorious “N-word”. He enjoys profanity. “Ain’t” is common parlance. And in the tape when he screams about Bill Clinton “ridin’ dirty” with Monica, Wright then seems to illustrate that by shuddering with his body and right arm in a crude effort to simulate sexual intercourse from the pulpit.

He calls Justice Thomas “Clarence Colon”: and Sec. Rice as “Condamnesia.” Add that to his “God Damn America”, his attacks on “the KKK of America”, and his crackpot notions about AIDs, the idea that cabbies (a vast majority of them of color) who pass by black males reflect white racism, etc. and Wright appears about as unscholarly as one can get.

Kini on June 15, 2008 at 11:19 PM

my theory on that is she started out funny (at least to some groups) had a few movies.. got her reputation as ‘Whoopie’.. and carried her so far ( Star Trek; TNG) in doing so, she gained her “Entourage” of hanger onners and sycophants that tell her she is funny with every joke she does.. because she is ‘Whoopie’ and you don’t say that’s not funny to whoopie..

people will watch her ( the ‘entertainment tonight’ types ) and laugh at her feeble jokes because she’s ‘whoopie’ and she’s funny..(right?) when if it was an unknown comic (not THE Unknown Comic with the paper bag over his head) the joke would be a chortle or a snort or an uncomfortable laugh..

the Political Correctness factor is definetly that she is a
black woman who is very liberal.. she will get work that way.. why she is on ‘The View’.. not that I watch it.. really.

If almost all black Americans have some white ancestry and Obama has some white ancestry then he’s black if he wants to be.

Unless we’re going to do one of two things, Americans who have some close African ancestry are called black. This is not a new concept.

The two things are:

1) Set a standard as to how much African ancestry one must have before being able to call himself/herself black; then using DNA info, start measuring the amount of African ancestry in each person, or

2) Do away with racial categorization all together.

Since number one is ghastly and offensive and number two is probably a long way off, I’d say that people should call themselves what they want.

Just because Obama’s got identity issues doesn’t mean that all black people do.

My mother has lighter skin that Obama. (One could make the case that my maternal grandmother was white since she had only one black grandparent) and my maternal grandfather was along the lines of Michael Steele–that is, black but not one hundred percent of African ancestry.

There’s no race called “tan.”

Look I see where you’re coming from and it would be nice if we could say *poof* and racial delineation would magically and all at once disappear.

What is nice is that, one by one, people with DNA from several continents are beginning to repudiate that delineation.

My point is that when Americans of African descent call themselves black, it has nothing to do with white people (most of the time). And unless you see a black American who is coal black, he/she probably has some white ancestry–obviously including me.

So when I call myself black, am I repudiating my whiteness? :-P

DaveC on June 16, 2008 at 12:09 AM

Ask her..
I wouldn’t know..
Why does she feel the need to identify one way or the other?

I’m asking you since you whe the one that brought the subject up and started all-caps with me when I tried to give you information that you don’t possess already. I’m trying to get you to think.

My mother didn’t make up the rules.

Do you not know the history of racial classification and identification in this country?

actually it was a lame juvenile joke..

DaveC on June 16, 2008 at 12:14 AM

Black, White, Yellow, Red… Why do we still focus on these things? We are all Americans. We have our history and ancestry, but I am in no way a hyphenated American. That hyphen might as well be a dividing symbol.

Well if she knows the rules then i can tell my “cousin”, actually my 2nd cousin’s kid.

I can let him know if he’s black or white.. or whatever..
ehhh.. he’s only like 6 years old.. so maybe he doesn’t care..

Chakra Hammer on June 16, 2008 at 12:21 AM

isn’t skin color a genetic marker the same way eye color and hair color is?

So.. it’s not really race then..

only asking..

OMG.. look at the Ultimate Identity Politics that the Democrats are playing now..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulatto

Although it is commonly used to describe individuals of mixed European and African descent, it originally referred to anyone with mixed ethnicities; in fact, in the United States, “mulatto” was also used as a term for those of mixed white and Native American ancestry during the early census years.

Obama is just like me..!!!!!! Oh.. now i can identify with him!

Everyone can identify him him!..

DaveC on June 16, 2008 at 12:22 AM

kind of an odd thing.. obviously…

Chakra Hammer on June 16, 2008 at 12:30 AM

My point is that when Americans of African descent call themselves black, it has nothing to do with white people (most of the time). And unless you see a black American who is coal black, he/she probably has some white ancestry–obviously including me.

So when I call myself black, am I repudiating my whiteness? :-P

baldilocks on June 16, 2008 at 12:04 AM

So.. how what would you call an eastern Indian (dot, not feather)? many of them are pretty dark skinned.. I have heard it once ( On the Opie and Antony show) that they are black man skin with white man’s hair..

DaveC on June 16, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Damn the census! Blame it on the census!

It’s not about what I would call an Indian.

some from Cambodia are dark as well.

Who are you calling a Democrat

Then there’s no such thing as black Americans. Thanks for solving that problem.

What do you call a kid that has white, mexican and black?

The mom is 1/2 Black and white

the dad is 1/2 Mexican 1/2 white

===

What is the kid? “Hispanic” or “black” or “Black-Hispanic”?

Chakra Hammer on June 16, 2008 at 12:38 AM

Chakra Hammer, are you one of those people who calls anyone who doesn’t agree with you a ‘Democrat?’ Because if you are, I won’t bother anymore. I made my conservative Internet bones and don’t need your stamp of approval.

baldilocks on June 16, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Why do you folks keep asking me what I would call a given mixture of DNA?

What part of history of racial categorization and identification in the USA are you not getting?
