Again: ABC blames conservative bloggers for the Michelle Obama tape rumor

posted at 2:56 pm on June 15, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Seixon. I have nothing to add to the previous two posts about this; I just want to keep a running tally. This makes five, count ‘em five, “respected” news sources circulating this smear: (1) Time magazine, (2) the New York Times, (3) the AP, (4) the Guardian, and now ABC. Not a single one has so much as mentioned Larry Johnson.

“In an environment now that is increasingly polarizing and nasty, charges can be made, often unsubstantiated charges through the Web,” said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the Rothenberg Political Report. “We’re in an environment now where being a first lady is a lot tougher job than it used to be.”

Google “Michelle Obama” and the term “whitey” and you’ll find conservative bloggers claiming a video shows her using the racially tinged term at Trinity Church. No tape has ever surfaced. But the claim helped prompt the Obama campaign to launch its own Web site, FighttheSmears.com.

Perversely, all this does is give Johnson more incentive to float whatever crap he can come up with. All he needs is for some conservative to criticize him for it, and voila — the conservative is responsible, the Narrative is set, and he’s off the hook. Exit question: Did you know that Rush Limbaugh says the tape exists? No? Neither does Rush.

What is so surprising to me is this is a bunch of hoopla about a rumor about something that has NOT happened (i.e. “the tape”).

It is beginning to sound like a setup by the left…

Isn’t Larry Johnson a conservative blogger?

/Just joking

Carl in Jerusalem on June 15, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Just wait pretty soon even Larry Johnson will deny that it was his blog that started this firestorm.

What a joke. Are they running out of layers and filters?

When the “news” is a deliberate misrepresentation, they have no right to claim objectivity or whine when they’re accused of bias.

JammieWearingFool on June 15, 2008 at 3:06 PM

I have to question why BarryO seems soooooooooo desperate to tell us all the video doesn’t exist. We’ve already seen the videos we need to see via JWright and Pfelgler who were preaching at the church Michelle and BarryO attended for 20 years. I don’t need to see a tape of Michelle saying “whitey” to know what I already know: THEY AND THEIR FRIENDS ARE RACISTS.

So has anyone actually called ABC and the others and demanded a correction? Like, pick up the phone and inform them that they are reporting half truths?

Par for the course. I would have been surprised if they didn’t blame conservatives for it.

What’s funny is that Obama’s own advisors actually interrogated Michelle about the tape. They had to thought it was believable.

Anyway, did anyone on the conservative side talk about this rumor without mentioning that it came from a Hillary crackpot? This is test case in how the media will frame the coverage in favor of the Hope Healer.

Anyone notice that it is the Obama camp who are the ones making all the rant-o-rama noise about this Mama Michelle “whitey” tape, while the Conservative bloggers have hardly made so much as a peep about it? Gets you to wondering just who it really was who caused of the ruckus first.

It’s pretty messed up that all the MSM are blaming conservatives for this b.s, but all you hear is the sounds of silence on this:Inside Job

The Barack Obama campaign may have to update its new Web site set up to combat vicious rumors thanks to a fellow Democrat.

Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee member Fred Hobbs tells The City newspaper in Nashville, “I don’t exactly approve of a lot of the things he stands for — and I’m not sure we know enough about him. He’s got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be.”

Hobbs was giving an interview to the paper about fellow Tennessee Congressman and Democratic superdelegate Lincoln Davis, who has not yet declared his support for Obama.

Reacting to Hobbs, Davis’ Chief of Staff Beecher Frasier says he does not know for sure if Obama is terrorist connected, but he assumes he is not.

Wouldn’t it be fantastically hilarious if after all this, it really did exist? I doubt that it does, Michelle bama strikes me as very intelligent so I doubt that she would say something so stupid, but if it was true, I would laugh and laugh and laugh…but of course the Obama camp has already released the explanation: she wasn’t saying “whitey did this” or “whitey did that” she was saying “why’d he do this” or “why’d he do that” so just like John Kerry, he didn’t say what they said he said, and even if he did, he didn’t say it how they said it, and even if he did, he didn’t mean it how they took it, and by the way you’re a racist.

JustTruth101 on June 15, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Let’s all see this for what it is – an attempt by the Democratic media to prevent a civil war within the Democratic party by erasing the fact that a Hillary-supporter started this rumor.

The Norwegian media, true to form, repeated this DNC talking point. I’ve given at least one publication notice, and they haven’t responded. Slick.

Odd. When I Google “michelle obama” and “whitey” the right wing blog I find says:

Many readers are wondering why I have not written a single word about the rumored Michelle Obama “whitey” video.
Simple: Larry Johnson, the main source of the rumors, is not, not, not to be trusted.
Moreover: The story keeps changing.

Maybe ABC has a different Google.

its vintage duh on June 15, 2008 at 4:17 PM

Is the fact that it was really Johnson who started the rumor explained in FightTheSmears.com?

Sadly, no. It tries to put the guilt on Rush Limbaugh, only giving Larry Johnson the sidekick role of promising an update on the story, which it notes he never came up with. It says he wrote about this on May 31 – never noting that he was the one who made up the rumor on May 16.

In the e-mail the web page asks readers to send to friends, it puts the blame on:

Rush Limbaugh and his fellow right-wing attack-dogs have been spreading baseless rumors about a non-existent video tape showing Michelle Obama using a racial epithet.

This is not the Larry Johnson you’ve been looking for.

The first person i saw “imply” there was a tape was democratic strategist Bob Beckel on Fox news a couple of weeks ago. I was listening to Rush’s show when he mentioned the tape and he never said it existed. In fact, Rush quoted Beckel.

coldshot on June 15, 2008 at 6:03 PM

This is the way the left/MSM will compartmentalize and make somewhat irrelevant conservative blogs. As they’ve done w/conservative talk radio. And its working, to some extent. The facts/truth have nothing to do with it. Its all about their strategy to be able to “explain away” their competition and paint them with a negative brush. They’ll convince the masses of uninformed idiots out there that all right wing blogs are not to be trusted. Its the same old thesis/anti-thesis tactic. DD

Darvin Dowdy on June 15, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Even though a Clinton supporter started this rumor, from camp Obama’s perspective, it isn’t dishonest to blame it on “conservatives.” I thought it was at first, too, until I realized::

It should be noted that when you are as far to the left as Senator Obama is, a Clinton supporter would be considered conservative.

Spolitics on June 15, 2008 at 7:01 PM

I think Johnson or some of his Clinton associates had another goal besides damaging Obama.* Another priority would be to damage the reputations of the conservative and libertarian bloggers. Floating a bogus bombshell rumor about Obama’s wife, and then blaming it on the conservative bloggers, would help the democrats to inflict damage upon the credibility of conservative bloggers who have done serious damage to both the Clintons and to Obama this year.
The emotional image of those nasty conservatives smearing Obama’s wife is aimed at evoking public disgust. It also would innoculate Michelle from another unpleasant gaffe.

If they can make the smear stick– it will help silence a major source of criticism of Obama and the democrats.

ragnell

* there is also pre-mentioned point that Hillary wanted to have conservatives take the fall for her dirty work. But still– who benefits the most from this scenaro? Obama

Ragnell on June 15, 2008 at 7:20 PM

It would be nice if Fox defended the bloggers from the slander befores repetition turns this lie into an urban myth.

After all, they certainly have benefited from mining stories from the conservative blogs–for which, they often fail to properly credit the blogger whose work, Fox “borrows”

Darvin Dowdy on June 15, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Darvin,

I blame the Republican Party for contributing to the “compartmentalization” and making conservative blogs “somewhat irrelevant” in comparison to the big left blogs.

While democratic politicians POSTED and contributed diaries to dkos and other leftwing blogs, Republican tech-dinosaurs ignored and in some cases, shunned the very blogs that could help them. Even now, they still haven’t “got” with the program.

They invite people to set up blogs but think that their only purpose is for daily fund-raising. What they don’t understand is how the dynamics of leftwing blog fundraising works. FIRST you attract a large number of people who are interested in posting/blogging/commenting/ at your blog on a regular basis-however you set it up– You set up an online community.

THEN you talk about donations.

They keep treating blogging like it’s some sort of political dinner,(with people who already know each other) shell out thousands, and then get to spend a few hours eating a mediocre meal. They don’t “get” the idea of a how a blogging community develops, and the power it can provide to a candidate.

If they don’t start catching on soon– they are going to be so far behind the democrats in impacting the blogosphere, and the damage will be so deep, that it will take a decade to recover. In particular, the 18-25 crowd, will lock permanently into in leftwing sites and won’t bother to pay attention to anything from conservative bloggers.

I get so frustrated with them

The very big shoes of Sideshow Bob have fallen on his own toes. Curse those conservative bloggers! Bart Simpson does it again! Those pesky children see through plots and rumors to solve the case.

Quotes from “Krusty Gets Busted” The Simpsons:
(names have been changed to protect the innocent)

(Sideshow Bobama) “My young friends: For years I have been silent, save for the crude crescendos of this primitive wind instrument. But now destiny has thrust me into the center ring. In the coming weeks, you will notice some rather sweeping changes in our program. Please do not be alarmed. Itchy and Scratchy will still have a home here, but we’ll also learn about nutrition, self-esteem, etiquette, and all the lively arts.”

(Show begins)
BOBama: “Hello kids! Whom do you love?”
KIDS: “Sideshow Bob!”
BOBama: “How much do you love me?”
KIDS: “With all our hearts!”

BOBama: “Today’s show promises to be a marvelous celebration of the human spirit. But first, I regret to say I see a youngster who looks troubled. What’s your name, young man?
BART: “Bart Simpson, sir.”
BOBama: “Well, perhaps we can shed some light on your problem in a new segment exploring pre-adolescent turmoil. I call it, ‘Choices’.”
BART: “I don’t think so, sir.”

BOBama: “So, what’s the matter, Bart, I’ll bet the other children don’t accept you.”
BART: “True, Sideshow Bob, but that doesn’t bother me. You see, my sisters and I have been doing a little investigating and it looks like to us like Krusty was framed.”

BOBama: “Bart, children. This whole sordid affair has been a shock to all of us, but we must get on with our lives. Let’s try to remember Krusty not as a hardened criminal, but as that loveable jester, who’d honk his horn and put around in his little car.”
BART: “And shot you out of a cannon.”
BOBama: “And shot me out of a cannon. Yes, we will never forget that, will we? Bart, open your heart. I’ll admit I have some might big shoes to fill…”

maverick muse on June 16, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Every attack and smear Hillary threw at Obama was preceeded with “the Republicans will use this, so I need to say it now so everyone is well-informed about what is coming later”. This is the new level of politics of personal destruction – blame the Republicans, talk radio, and bloggers for the rumors that THEY start.

And these are the people who accuse Bush of lying and misleading the American people about the war.
