Stay classy, Chris Matthews

Chris Matthews had his opportunity to offer remembrances of his colleague, Tim Russert, on Countdown with Keith Olbermann last night, and used it to give an anti-war screed. Even worse, he made Russert out to be a dupe bamboozled by the Bush administration while presenting himself as a superior journalist. Just watch it:
Even Keith Olbermann knew better than to go there, changing the subject quickly after Matthews’ rant. He provided a moment of irony later when the two most biased “journalists” on television heralded Russert’s objectivity as if they understood what the word meant. Neither Olbermann or Matthews could carry Russert’s shoes, and Matthews in particular proved why last night.
One might be tempted to give Matthews a pass, as the shock of his friend’s passing had to be hard on him, and one could see the pain. However, Matthews makes clear that he deliberately chose to make this point, leading with, “This might be tricky,” and later saying that he had spent two hours preparing for the delivery of this anecdote. The choice of casting Russert as a dupe within hours of his death was deliberate.
Scott Ott, the master satirist, notes that real life provides its own satire in this case:
The Hardball host’s live shot from Paris last night gave vivid illustration to the expression “like a belch in church.”
Asked by a justifiably teary-eyed Keith Olbermann to reflect on the sudden death, Mr. Matthews professed his love and admiration, calling Mr. Russert “everyman”, a “true patriot”, “Mr. America” — by which he meant that the Meet the Press moderator had supported the Iraq invasion because of the trumped-up threat of nukes. …
It’s hard to fathom a soul so craven that he would use a eulogy to resurrect his timeworn attack on the stagecraft of the Bush administration. But the overflow of Chris Matthews’ darkened heart also spilled onto the rest of us ‘patriotic Americans’ who were fooled by what Bush-Cheney Inc. was “selling.” In a nutshell, we’re all just a bunch of hard-working dopes like Tim Russert.
I think this illustrates the depth of NBC’s loss yesterday, and our own.

Wow. Olbermann actually out-classed Matthews. Doesn’t say much for Chrissy Wissy.

Wow, I did not realize it was possible to fall below the standards of Olbermann.

But lo…Matthews succeeded.
JetBoy on June 14, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Because of decisions to allow a Matthews or Olbermann to cross over the line from reporting to commentary (and back and forth and back and forth), NBC finds itself trapped.
Trapped in the sense that they have no “farm system” (their cable network) that can be used to replace the terrible loss of a Tim Russert. Matthews has no credibility to be able to replace Russert. Olbermann has even less than that.
Had Matthews and/or Olbermann acted professionally these past years, NBC can simply (or not so simply; it’s hard to replace a larger-than-life figure like Russert) promote them to the Meet the Press slot.
But they can’t.
They’ve built an entire cable news network around Olbermann and, to a lesser extent, Matthews. Two people that simply have no credibility – none – to do anything else.
Talk about short-sighted management.
SteveMG on June 14, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Didn’t I read somewhere that Chrissy was considering a run for Senator? Perhaps he was just showing his bona fides.
a capella on June 14, 2008 at 11:57 AM
And you, Christ Matthews and Keith Olbermann are not. You are “journalists” first and partisans for the democrats next. Where are you Americans? I don’t think this even goes into your top ten.
wise_man on June 14, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Just despicable. Sadly, this is now what NBC is left with. I was at least comforted to see Tom Brokaw break this news on NBC yesterday. He has dignity and class.

I also watched this live yesterday. It was unbelieveable. Matthews demonstrated, once again, what a low-class loser he really is.

Just the thought of either of these lowlifes hosting MTP is revolting. Either NBC recruits elsewhere or retires the program.

Come to think of it, Russert was the most decent of all the left leaning media people on-air.
Now we are left with the likes of Olby and Chrissy.
Matthews links David Duke and the “neo-Cons” in his blather.
It is creepy becaue if they had their chance, no other opinion besides their opinion would get out. Considering Russert’s grilling of liberls probably has got him alot of hard feelings from the likes of the MSM.
RobCon on June 14, 2008 at 12:22 PM
With Olbermann and Matthews in charge now, NBC’s decline is about to go geometric, appealing exclusively to nurtooots.
NBC = Nutroots Broadcasting Company
(Meanwhile parent, GE, continues to trade with Iran.)

RobCon on June 14, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Yeah. Chris Matthews’ comments are inappropriate, but not completely outrageous to me. Although Matthews probably meant “Mr. America” as condescention, I think it’s a compliment.
bigbeas on June 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM
Where decent souls see tragedy, profound loss, a time for thoughts, prayers for the family. Chris Matthews sees a once in a lifetime, golden opportunity to push grieving family members aside, climb up on the stretcher and bash Bush, score some political points as he high fives the unhinged left.
christophercube on June 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM
NBC is truly worthless today. Devoid honor or merit.

The ONLY GEM in the crap is sadly gone, leaving only the excrement.

I bet that fancy pants Phil Griffin will be sweating soon enough, he just lost the heavy anchor at NBC news, which will make his new experiment at MSNBC look like a failed moonshot mighty quick. They no longer have any gravitas to deliver the partisan pizza with, now it’s just a bunch of ’so called journalists’ orating their beliefs in what looks like a daily comedy sketch… One that was already tainting Williams & Russert’s reputations of late sadly.
saus on June 14, 2008 at 12:34 PM
The anti-war screed was pretty classless, but I think the more interesting aspect of the clip is the way Matthews seemed to find Russert’s concern about terrorists with nuclear weapons as charmingly provincial. Apparently, Chris and his tingling leg have bought into Obama’s post-post-9/11 philosophy that armed crazies who want to kill us aren’t worth worrying about (all we need to do is reach out).
Is it me, or does Matthews look a little guilty in the beginning of the clip? The fact that Russert was younger, better educated (Russert had a law degree), and more senior probably kept Matthews awake at night. I bet he bad-mouthed him every chance he got.
Infidoll on June 14, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Plus, if they use Matthews as a fill in for Russert on MTP, it gives GOP candidates a perfect reason to boycott appearing there, since his partisanship is so well documented.

As a devote Catholic who treated Republicans with respect and asked tough questions of Democrats, Russert probably earned derision from many in his profession but of course now they all talk about unconditional love for the man.
RobCon on June 14, 2008 at 12:37 PM
At two minutes, I felt like I was going to vomit. Seriously.
I can’t really hate Matthews more than Olbermann, but damn if he isn’t trying his hardest to achieve that.
MadisonConservative on June 14, 2008 at 12:37 PM
They’ve got a bunch of Jon Stewart wanna-bes to fill in for Russert, a man who clearly took his job seriously and always made, for me, a good faith effort to be fair.
So, they go from Russert to Olbermann?
Smart job there Phil Griffin.
SteveMG on June 14, 2008 at 12:40 PM

I too watched it live lastnight, and was appalled that Chrissy said that. IT had nothing to do with the death of Mr. Russert. Chrissy is a pig and could never be a classy man. He should have to apologize live and say I was out of line and MY Disrespectful STATEMENT had nothing to do with what was the topic..the death of a very good journalist…
Just an IDIOT!
I agree Shooter, there is no HONOR at PSNBC
KO might have changed the subject or felt “uncomfortable” but he is no better than Chrissy. Maybe one would think that the death of someone THESE GUYS looked up to might change them NOW…Mr Russert never really had a bad thing to say on air about anyone, could these 2 ever follow that logic? I think not.

That, that,….that scumbag Chris Matthews however…..
MrC_5150 on June 14, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Chris Matthews has been trying to sell this idea that the Bush administration put more emphasis on the nuclear threat than any of the other intelligence. I think it’s because of his minor role in the Joe Wilson situation, and it’s his way of self-aggrandizing– “I was close to the center of the battle of our lifetimes!”
At the beginning of the interview, Matthews said he and Tim weren’t close, and at the Libby trial a note was entered into evidence where Mary Matalin said Tim hated Chris.
Anyway, in the immortal words of Chris’s hero Jacques Chirac, Chris missed an excellent opportunity to shut his mouth.

Olberman was the sane one, someone pinch me, I can’t believe it!!!
Defector01 on June 14, 2008 at 12:59 PM
At this point, NBC News’ reputation depends on Information Minister Olbermann and Liberal Yeller Matthews.
The writing is on the wall for NBC News. We all know GE has a big investment in Iran, and that’s why GE’s properties like NBC and MSNBC are pushing Obama hard. A McCain presidency would result in the liberation of Iran and GE’s partnership with the Khomeinist regime would be nullified. GE would suffer a financial hit if Obama is not elected. NBC News is in the process of discrediting itself.
indythinker on June 14, 2008 at 1:02 PM

zerodamage on June 14, 2008 at 1:08 PM
From what I’ve read, the investments are leftover contracts totaling $50 million.
They had about $173 billion in revenue last year; so their revenue from Iran is almost meaningless.
Although one could argue (this is your point, I guess) that even that $50 million gives them a foot through the door for future dealings.
SteveMG on June 14, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Sadly, this was to be expected. Russert and Matthews hated each other and this was Matthews last opportunity to stick to Russert. As a reminder:

Olbermann should have named Russert the worst person in the world. Because really, considering Olbermann self parody routine isn’t that actually a badge of honor more than anything else?

MCPO Airdale on June 14, 2008 at 1:56 PM
Did you catch Tom Brokaw’s gentle chiding of Olbermann at the end of their segment together? He said Tim had set the bar high, and it was now up to them to keep it raised.

Chuck Todd and Brokaw both gave good euologies though.

I bet Chrissy, like a cat, licked his lips, in private of course, upon hearing the bad news.
Does he even remotely believe that he’d be given a chance to fill Mr. Russert’s shoes?
Entelechy on June 14, 2008 at 2:06 PM
Mr. Brokaw retired with class. I bet he’ll be brought out for this election cycle, until NBC decides whom to replace Mr. Russert with on MTP.
Entelechy on June 14, 2008 at 2:07 PM
Well, I broke down and listened to the Kinder talk about a grown up.
“How will the country get beyone this loss?”
Sorry, but sad as any death is, this made me laugh.
Mr. Russert, as all other men and women, will be equally dead, and in time forgotten, to be registered by a meager Wikipedia entry.
History/the world doesn’t care. Death is a great equalizer.
At least Mr. Russert didn’t have such a big head, as these two, when he was alive. That will be his legacy and contribution to the world, and to his child.
Entelechy on June 14, 2008 at 2:20 PM
I would imagine Olby and Chrissy are alot like Louis B. Mayer when he found out his antagonist, the great Irving Thalberg had died at 37
Mayer supposedly said, “God has been very good to me”.
God help NBC.

Too soon to talk about who should replace Tim Russert, but I think Chuck Todd is probably the best candidate. He’s a liberal too but its hard to figure it out. He comes off as a moderate.
justinok on June 14, 2008 at 2:33 PM
Matthews clearly outlined the two warring factions at NBC News here – old-school Brokaw/Russert vs. upstart Matthews/Olbermann.
The B/R side thinks that their primary responsibilities are to their audience, their profession, their country and their employer. They are grateful for the opportunities they’ve been given.
M/O serve only themselves and are impatient for the old fogeys to get out of the way so they can attain the personal power and status they think they deserve. Whatever they have it’s not enough.
NBC News is in big trouble if Matthews can make Olbermann look mature by comparison.
Gilda on June 14, 2008 at 2:35 PM
Heed Brokaw’s words Chris:
raiderdav on June 14, 2008 at 2:40 PM
I guarantee you both Chris and Keith called their agents before anyone else. As to a replacement host on Meet The Press, Tom Brokaw could do it like David Brinkley did on ABC. Or Lisa Myers should receive some consideration if they promote from within.
meci on June 14, 2008 at 2:42 PM
If you have noticed Olbermann, he acts like an objective host during the primary election shows with Chris Matthews. However, you can see his bias in the way he asks the questions.
Obviously he’s turns off his objective host acting during his Countdown show.. goes all crazy at that point.
justinok on June 14, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Olbermann is golden here as well:
Nice out Olby. Some of us want to be neutral. Perhaps.
raiderdav on June 14, 2008 at 2:46 PM
You know, if the jig is up for the MSM, that their illusion of impartiality has been forever shattered, they’d frankly do better with Olbermann and Matthews. The right and the young don’t watch NBC news anyway.
Why would any lefty watch Russert or Brokaw when they can get something more partisan?
As a practical matter, I’d give it to the new guys. I don’t think they have a prayer of survival otherwise.

This reminds me of the first episode of “LA Law.” One of the partners dies over the weekend. As the staff starts coming in and hearing the news, one lawyer (I think it was Arnie Becker, the divorce lawyer) says, “So who gets his office?”
No doubt Matthews has been hanging around the hallway like a vulture near Russert’s office with a paint chip sheet in his hand.
