Whoa: Tim Russert dies of heart attack; Update: Brokaw video added; Update: The closest to objectivity among the MSM, says Limbaugh

Just across at the New York Post, although MSNBC conspicuously hasn’t reported it yet. Standby.

Update: CBS apparently is reporting it too, although I don’t see anything on the homepage. Nothing still on MSNBC.

Update: The Times has a bulletin saying his family’s confirmed it. How awful, and only a few weeks after that reminder from Terry McAuliffe that his dad’s still alive, hale, and hardy.

Update: MSNBC’s airing footage now.

Update: From TV Newser: “Around 1pmET this afternoon, Russert was conducting a political Q&A on MSNBC.com. We’re told Russert collapsed while in the tracking booth at the Washington bureau.”

Update: Here’s NBC’s obit.

Update: You can gauge the sort of esteem he was held in by the fact that this is top story not only on Drudge but on most rival news networks. Even Brent Bozell, not one to be overly romantic about the media, is effusive in his praise.

Update: Here’s Brokaw breaking the news.

Update: Even rarer than media praise from Brent Bozell: Rush pays his respects.

Update (Ed): We were on the air when this news broke and talked about it for twenty minutes or so.  I knew AP would have a great round-up, and I just want to add a few thoughts.  Russert made the tough transition from politico to journalist about as well as anyone ever has; Chris Matthews, for instance, can only wish that he had Russert’s credibility.  Russert got criticized from time to time about his performance, but even that criticism recognized Russert’s normal professionalism and excellence.  MTP will not be the same with his passing, and it’s going to be tough to see how NBC can replace him.  I think he will only be succeeded on Sunday mornings. He left us far too young at 58(!).
Joe Gandelman has a good roundup at TMV, as does Michelle.

tx2654 on June 13, 2008 at 3:34 PM

God bless the Russert family with peace in their hearts & with his comforting embrace.

jgapinoy on June 13, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Whoa. How sad and so close to Father’s Day. I always enjoyed hearing him talk about his father, Big Russ, but have never read his book about him.

Brat on June 13, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Terry Macaulif, was foreshadowing. RIP and best wishes to his family.

koolbrease on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Oh crap. This must be waht Hannity was just talking about. What a shock. My prayers are for his family.

NTWR on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

May God be with his family should this turn out to be so. His was a career of class and hard work. I didn’t always agree with what he would say at times, but he never showed any ignorance of topic or arrogance towards his guests. He IS a journalist.

MNDavenotPC on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

NY Times and CBS also reporting it now

William Amos on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I just this at FR. Prayers for his family. Fox hasn’t had anything yet.

Connie on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

This is shocking. Never saw this coming. God bless him and his family.

jencab on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

MSNBC hasn’t said anything.

I am so sorry

RushBaby on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

I like Russert. Didn’t always agree with him, but he was on his game. Florida, Florida, Florida.

txsurveyor on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

NY Times says yes.

G on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Wow! Out of the blue.

Weight of Glory on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

So I’m hoping it isn’t true.

MayBee on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

What a terrible surprise. Such a shame.

Zetterson on June 13, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Whoa…where the hell did that come from?

A loss of one of the more tolerable media fixtures. A shame.

Best wishes to his family and friends.

My condolences to his family and his co-workers.
May he rest in peace.
He will be missed.

rslancer14 on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

One of the last remaining journalist. He kept his views pretty close to the vest. RIP

gmoonster on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

I guess all the good ones are gone!

My most sincere condolences to his family.

newton on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

I thought that was sarcasm, as in, saying he was surprised or angered by something.

Wow.

Hope his family is coping if it’s true.

Esthier on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

R.I.P :(

trailortrash on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Rest in Peace, Tim, may God welcome you back home and ease the suffering of your family and friends…… Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust…….

Seven Percent Solution on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

He was only 58.

gmoonster on June 13, 2008 at 3:40 PM

You never know when you’re number is coming up, folks. Don’t take anything for granted.

Very sad for his family.

BigD on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

58 years old… That’s too young to pass.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

RIP

My prayers are with his family.
Very sad indeed.

oceansidecon on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

Wow… my condolences to the family. His was one of the few remaining voices of broadcast journalism I still trusted and respected.

Skywise on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

God, so sad.

MayBee on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

MSNBC is still in shock at losing their only guy w/ any talent.

jgapinoy on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

wow.

I didn’t always agree with the guy, but he was one of the best on Sunday mornings.

yo on June 13, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Wallace speaking. Said they knew but wanted NBC to be the first to announce.

Connie on June 13, 2008 at 3:42 PM

He will be missed for sure. One of the greats.

saltydogg14 on June 13, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Nope, Sunday’s won’t be the same. R.I.P., Mr. Russert.

KelliD on June 13, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Fox News just reported something to the effect that they’d known about this for a while but were holding back the story to let NBC be the first to announce it.

Darin on June 13, 2008 at 3:44 PM

no way!

Dr. Manhattan on June 13, 2008 at 3:44 PM

It’s up on MSN’s home page now. This one really is a shame. Like others, I didn’t always agree with him but he had real class and dignity. Again, a real shame.

Big John on June 13, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Gimminy!

My condolences to his family and his friends. I fully admit to him getting me yelling at the pixels but life would be pretty boring if everyone argeed with me all the time.

God bless you Mr Russert!

Limerick on June 13, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Fox News just announced it.

newton on June 13, 2008 at 3:45 PM

knat on June 13, 2008 at 3:45 PM

Bummer.
I didn’t always agree with Tim, but I admired his work ethic and his intelligence. He was very good at his job.
Condolences to his family, especially his son Luke and his dad, Big Russ. May God bless and comfort you.

AZCoyote on June 13, 2008 at 3:46 PM

One of the few people in the MSM that I actually liked and could listen to without wanting to shut the show off. A class act even though I did not agree with him on a lot of things.

A very sad loss to his family. My condolences go out to them.

Voidseeker on June 13, 2008 at 3:46 PM

So sad…My prayers are with his family.

acleaver on June 13, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Very sad. Even though I believe he skewed left, he had class and talent. One of the few remaining MSM talking heads that you could say that about.

You never know when you’re number is coming up, folks. Don’t take anything for granted.

BigD on June 13, 2008 at 3:41 PM

That is as true as anything ever said.

peski on June 13, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Is his dad still around?

newton on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Tim Russert and Chris Wallace – the two best interviewers on TV. Compare them to the jerk Olbermann.

Hilts on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM

This is indeed sad news. I’ll be keeping his family in my thoughts.

Anna on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Very sad and shocking. I lost my father at same age. RIP

jlemieu1 on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Damn! He was probably the last good man on his side of the business. And it’s made even worse by the fact that he was only 58. It’s a sad day.

thekingtut on June 13, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Very sorry to hear this, Russert was the best of the lot over at that network. How long until Olbermann starts lobbying to take over Meet the Press?

Dudley Smith on June 13, 2008 at 3:48 PM

This is a shock. How sad. Didn’t always agree with him, but he was one of the best.

RIP Tim. Condolences to his family.

jewells45 on June 13, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Oh my!! God bless him and his family.
Agree or not, he was a good man and no good man should die so young.
You just can’t take anything for granted.
*
He was one of the better interviewers, and I never felt he “had it out” for someone, maybe he was tilted towards an ideal (shouldn’t we all), but he was one of the best.
May his legacy be recorded as one of honor…

right2bright on June 13, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Is his dad still around?

newton on June 13, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Yes.

Wade on June 13, 2008 at 3:49 PM

RIP Russert, a fine man and outstanding newscaster, regardless of his politics, a good family man.

He departed too soon and so abruptly. Condolences to the Russert family. Pray God be with them.

maverick muse on June 13, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Complete shock. Terribly sad news.

JimRich on June 13, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Man. Tragedy.

Spirit of 1776 on June 13, 2008 at 3:50 PM

It’s up on NSNBC now; truly a sad day. I always liked the guy and his approach, even when I disagreed with him.

michaelo on June 13, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Shocking. Probably was the best interviewer in the business. Condolences to his family, he truly will be missed.

God bless you, Tim Russert. And may God give comfort and peace to your family.

Matticus Finch on June 13, 2008 at 3:51 PM

RIP Russert, a fine man and outstanding newscaster, regardless of his politics, a good family man.

Spirit of 1776 on June 13, 2008 at 3:51 PM

There goes any one of us, at any time, for sure. Enjoy every moment, along with the sweet, and the bitter.

was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.

He might have been a “light” but he never crossed over. What is Hillary thinking now? He didn’t get to live to see his Messiah sworn in and his beloved father survived him. It’s very, very sad for the old man.

May his family be comforted. Sudden deaths are the hardest, especially when not an accident. Illnesses harden families, accidents enable acceptance, sudden deaths like this one can’t easily be explained/accepted.

Entelechy on June 13, 2008 at 3:52 PM

May the perpetual light shine upon Tim’s soul and may he rest in the peace of Christ. Prayers also for Tim’s family and friends that the good Lord may grant them the grace they need during their lose.

Tobias2012 on June 13, 2008 at 3:52 PM

I always liked him. Big bummer. My condolences go out to his family.

Physics Geek on June 13, 2008 at 3:52 PM

A shock. Very sad.

The Russert family will be in my prayers.

DPierre on June 13, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Sometimes it’s hard to understand the drift of things. This was a good man. Death can come for ya any place, any time. It’s never welcomed. But if you’ve done all you can do, and it’s your best, in a way I guess you’re ready for it.

Beto Ochoa on June 13, 2008 at 3:53 PM

What a shame, and such a shock. His family must be devastated. I pray that seek solace in the Lord, and may He give them all strength.

Wow! Just goes to prove that you never know when you are going to check out so you need to live each day as if it were the last. Let’s remember that this weekend!

Thoughts and prayers to the Russert family.

A nice little nugget from Dkos. Although, most comments there so far are much more civil.

Big John on June 13, 2008 at 3:55 PM

Condolences to his family and loved ones.

Condolences to the Russert family and friends. So Sad.

Condolences to his family.

He was a good man.

Talon on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

I never was a fan of MSNBC but I would occasionally tune in on Sunday just to see Russert on Meet the Press. This is truly a blow. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Pestilence on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Even though he was a democrat and leaned that way, I respected his ability to give a tough and fair interview to Democrats and Republicans alike on MTP. I was a regular MTP viewer and I’m sorry to see him pass.

BTW, congrats to Hot Air viewers for staying classy here. Our friends at the DailyKos (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/13/154010/602/458/535511) were not so generous, with several commenters snarking at Russert for being overweight.

Outlander on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Wow. Never really agreed with him a lot, but if I had to listen to someone with an opposing political viewpoint he was one of the few i would listen to. Condolences to his family and friends.

vcferlita on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

That’s sad, to be cut down while still young.

May God comfort his family.

If they are Atheist, then may the chemical reaction going on in your brains which is causing you to feel sorrow quickly subside.

RobertInAustin on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

Wow.

One of the few leftists remaining I could actually respect.

urbancenturion on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

What a shame. So sad. He was one of the few “real” journalists left at NBC News. I know I’ll miss him on late Sunday mornings.

malan89 on June 13, 2008 at 3:56 PM

I liked him and he will be missed. RIP Mr Russert

TroubledMonkey on June 13, 2008 at 3:57 PM

just…damn. Rest in Peace Tim.

bernzright777 on June 13, 2008 at 3:57 PM

What!? RIP Tim… it’s even more sad just because you were the one bit of sanity left in your news operation, and the one who stood a chance of making some changes.

RightWinged on June 13, 2008 at 3:57 PM

Russert was a good man, very sad.

I always admired his unabashed reverence for his father.

God Speed Mr. Russert.

186k on June 13, 2008 at 3:57 PM

For once, I have to give credit to David Schuster. He was on air as Drudge reported this, but before MSNBC did. He was stumbling around trying to interview someone– he must have known and was just trying to hold it together. That would have been tough.
Obviously they were waiting to get Brokaw in and get hooked up to Williams in Afghanistan.
