Quote of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on June 13, 2008 by Allahpundit

Stephen B. Chapman, associate professor of the Old Testament at Duke University Divinity School, says the Bible has a lot to say about man’s relationship to the eco-system.

“In the Bible there is an essential relationship between social justice and right worship and ecology,” said Chapman. “The Bible has an intense interest in ecology.”

Religious scholars are beginning to pay more attention to what the Bible has to say about man’s destruction of the environment and its relationship to natural catastrophes

“The land bearing the cost of global warming is new, but the connection between what humankind does and what societies they form and the health of the land and agriculture is as old as the Bible itself,” he said.

Does this mean we have to continue the atheists vs. religious dummyheads thread from earlier? Social justice, ecology, and right worship, oh goody.

Chapman is an isagete. That is to say, he reads his own agenda into the text of the Scripture, rather than reading what is there.

That’s this theologian’s way of calling him an heretic.

Stephen B. Chapman has no idea what he’s talking about. The Bible makes it clear that the earth and all that is in it is for mans exclusive use or even abuse. God did not give us a delicate planet or environmental system, it is quite able to repair itself from nearly any punishment we can give it.

Even natural disasters such as Mt. Saint Helens, which dish out far more destruction than anything man is capable of do not permanently destroy an area.

It’s actually funny that environmentalist think they are the great keepers of the earth, pure vanity, how do you suppose the earth ever survived without them. Leftist tarts!

The ethic of conservation is the explicit abnegation of man’s dominion over the Earth. The lower species are here for our use. God said so: Go forth, be fruitful, multiply, and rape the planet–it’s yours. That’s our job: drilling, mining and stripping.

Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars — that’s the Biblical view.

Even in Revelation where it gets really hot, CO2 isn’t the source.

Revelation 16:8&9
The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given to it to scorch men with fire.

Men were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory.

Not only no CO2 in the Bible but check this out from Genesis 8:22

“While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
And cold and heat,
And summer and winter,
And day and night
Shall not cease.”

However there are plenty of us that think we are nearing the end of this age. Jesus from Matthew 24.

6 “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.

7 “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.

8 “But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.

9 “Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.

10 “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another.

11 “Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.

12 “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.

13 “But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

14 “This gospel of the kingdom (R)shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Sorry for the long post. There’s a lot of neat stuff in the Bible. Just read and believe!

Preface this by saying – I am a conservative Christian theologian.

1 – the Bible is not a science book, and should not be used to “prove,” matters of science. The Bible knows nothing of our Modern phenomenon of “global warming.”

2 – The relationship between those who follow God and the earth is an essential theme that runs through the biblical narrative. Humanity is given creation, and is to be a good steward of it. I personally believe that this means a variety of ways of caring for the earth, and if global warming were in fact a reality, I think it would be an imperative of people of faith to take this seriously. This is one precise reason that you have younger evangelicals flocking in droves to Obama.

I am not convinced of global warming of the variety that the goracle preaches. However, I am convinced of the necessity of being a responsible user of the earth’s resources.

I don’t remember God evah being invited to Oprah’s book club?

I tend to treat the bible as a cookbook. Recipes for life, liberty and happiness. You can make variations to the recipes, but rewriting them could lead to disaster.

From a worldwide view, the environment is not and has never been in our control. Equating religion and the environment together is hardly mutual.

Here’s a nice little nugget hidden toward the end of the article:

Scientists can predict major changes on the Earth by looking at its relationship to the sun, which has behaved “in more startling ways” in the last century, and more dramatically in the last three or four years.

Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma were “one of the stormiest periods on earth, and one of the stormiest on the sun,” said Joseph. “People are starting to understand the Earth’s relation to the sun.”

But, but…we’ve been told by our betters that these are caused by man-made global warming. That whole sun thing is just an inconvenience to put aside.

Jaibones on June 14, 2008 at 12:16 AM

Ya’ll are all in rare form tonight. You all have me laughing histerically.

But as for Duke divinity professors, I’m sure they are just like the ones I had at Wake. They spend all their time in class explaining why the Bible couldn’t be true. There is a difference between KNOWING what the Bible says and BELIEVING it. Most college level Bible classes concern themselves with discrediting the Bible – while using the Bible.

God only gave Adam and Eve one command. That command wasn’t to take care of the garden. God did that Himself. If God created it, how would man know how to care for it better than God? I would argue that is where obeying God came in under the covenant. Believe that God knows better than man. Just do what He says and everything will be fine. If you don’t do what He says, you are on your own.

aengus on June 13, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Aengus, I have wondered the same, and have been studying it for quite some time. Look at these verses from the Revelation:

1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Of course the Revelation is highly symbolic prophecy:

“signified” means, in the Greek, “typified” or “symbolic”

Revelation 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

Revelation 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts [were] like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads [were] as it were crowns like gold, and their faces [were] as the faces of men.

The Muslim Ottoman Turks were very adept horseman and had an army made up almost entirely of cavalry warriors. Very unique. They were also distiguished by the golden turbins they wore (“crowns like gold”), and their long beards (“faces of men”).

Revelation 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions.

They were also distinguished by their long hair. (“hair of women”).

Revelation 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

Iron, in scripture, is symbolic of strength.

Solomon says of locusts:

Proverbs 30:27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

Despite Muhammad’s death in 632, his armies did indeed swarm over the face of the earth like bands of locusts with no king.

Apocalyptic Global Warming (AGW) is quickly ramping up, at near asymptotic rates, into a shrillness that will render it unsustainable as the cult it has degenerated into. The daily drumbeat of hysteria mongering and fear infliction, in the face of weather that pretty much the same, and temperatures that are not cooperating, etc., is beginning to look silly to a lot of people. Which explains the increasing hysteria of the believers and promoters.
There is a biblical angel on this, however:
The bible opens early with an apocalypse and closes with an even more spectacular one.
Both are symbolic stories, not history.
Just as AGW is today.

hunter on June 14, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Maxx,

Was that directed at me? Indirectly, I thought you brought up a good point.

My point was that every word of the bible was inspired of God. God knows the beginning to the end.

Precisely!! Inspired and written by man. Also, the bible says predicting the end of the world is Gods knowledge alone.

To say there was knowledge that was not available to God at the time the scriptures were written would not be correct.

To be sure. God knows all, sees all, but does not tell all.

Global Warming is predicting the end of the would. That’s gods domain, not mans to know or predict.

The bible opens early with an apocalypse and closes with an even more spectacular one.
Both are symbolic stories, not history.
Just as AGW is today.

Woah. On any other day, this statement would trigger a flurry of response. Not today, though. Pretty sluggish Friday.

Funny! The “religious” elements are all there.

Carbon credits could be called the “wave offering” of the religion of environmentalism; a way to absolve you of your “sins” against mother earth.

They are not a perfect sacrifice, so they must be offered again and again as determined by high priest algore.

I’ll be back with my Ayn Rand essay collection, if you need me…

BlueZ on June 13, 2008 at 10:07 PM

Just acquired the original “The Ayn Rand Letter” and “The Objectivist” series, and the Ayn Rand stamp. Had just about all other which she wrote, or was written about her.

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is a history of the Kingdom of God.

That’s right. You can’t buy salvation outright from Al, you can only rent it with payments as long as you live.

MB4 on June 14, 2008 at 12:55 AM

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always liked the threads debating faith. At times it gets a bit ugly but for the most part, it’s a place to express the ‘wheres’ and ‘whys’ of both sides.

I miss Red Pill. Spammed a bit much, but he was fun!

Good article by Weather Channel founder, John Coleman, here:

Global Warming and the Price of a Gallon of Gas

nailinmyeye on June 131 – The Bible knows nothing of our Modern phenomenon of “global warming.”, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Modern phenomenon? The middle ages were much warmer than it is now.

If you don’t believe the great flood was history then you should check out this site. Even if it doesn’t change your mind I’m sure you will find it very interesting.

You have to ask yourself, how did this happen?

From MrC_5150′s linked article:

The cooling trend is so strong that recently the head of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had to acknowledge it. He speculated that nature has temporarily overwhelmed mankind’s warming and it may be ten years or so before the warming returns.

Come on. This global warming is such a sham. These people will do anything to continue the lie because it’s the vehicle they’re using to change the world into a socailistic state.

How many ice ages do scientists say we’ve had? Three? Four? Why is the climate change we’re going through now (slight as it is) spell the end of the world?

One last thing. In 2006 Al Gore stated that he wasn’t going to talk to China about the incredible amount of pollution they’re spewing into the atmosphere. When asked why not, the big baby said, “I’m not going to ask any other country to do it’s part until the United States gets on board first.”

Really, Al. Five years ago you stated that we had only ten years to act or all is lost, but you’re playing a game now, huh? Fraud.

Skidd on June 14, 2008 at 1:19 AM

all of it, comes down to their claim that the carbon dioxide in the exhaust from your car and in the smoke stacks from our power plants is destroying the climate of planet Earth.

I thought cars emitted Carbon Monoxide?

The article is excellent. Given the fact most of any of the so called scientists are in it for the $green$. Whereas John Coleman is are real climatologist scientist, and not even listened to.

Whereas, Al Gore is a charlatan and a fraud.
A politician – a professional lier.

Most welcome labrat, that is one of my favorite sites, its a big site with lots of information, all of it jaw dropping. There is also a youtube video here where Dr. Brown demonstrates his theory. Very cool stuff.

Time for me to hit the sack too, goodnight all !!

However there are plenty of us that think we are nearing the end of this age.

Ordinary1 on June 13, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Yes, we are.

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Psalms 90:4 For a thousand years in thy sight [are but] as yesterday when it is past, and [as] a watch in the night.

2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

We are in the seventh “day”.
